Draft Pick Discussion Thread, Rounds 1-5

The bottom line is it will be at least 5 years before we really know what we got from this draft. If Laporta flops and our 5th, 15th or 25th pick pans out who really cares. Gallardo wasn't a first rounder but is sure turning out like one. I personally don't care if the 1st rounder, 2nd rounder, or 3rd rounder turns out as long as we get an impact player or two in the end. Jack Z has shown he can do that. That's all you can ask.

I also like Laporta a lot and can see him in Milwaukee within a couple of years at most or being traded for a key component.

MAybe we should have drafted some high school RHPs who dont know how to pitch, or "toolsy" guys who project to be good....but are raw.

I think Laporta and Lucruy have plenty of upside.

I hope you are right. However, I still don't understand why some of you are 100% sure LaPorta is going to be any better?

The SEC is OK amateur baseball but his competetion is about to become much better. Guys with gaudy college stats fail also. However too much of the attention has been on LaPorta. I think he was taken too early by the Brewers but he is the least of my concerns with this draft.

I like Lucruy also and I think the LHPs as a group look interesting. So I don't entirely agree it is a lousy draft. However up to the run up I kept reading how this was a disappointing crop of position players in the college pool and I was just a little surprised by the number of guys we took in the first 20 rounds or so from college programs. Some of the scouting report are rather discouraging so I understand bklynbrewcrew's comments.

Farris for example is a pick I simply don't get at all. There were signable guys with much more upside than this guy and yes I have seen him play. Even saw him last summer on Cape Cod. The guy screams utility IF.

Perhaps this explains it a little bit. It seems that college position players were undervalued in this draft because of a presumption of a poor overall crop. While Laporta is no doubt NOT at the level of an Alex Gordon, Ryan Zimmerman or Ryan Braun, I bet Jack Z and Doug Melvin felt he was the best college hitter out there. I just think there was a lot of value in the college bats tihs year.

EDIT to complete a sentence or two.

I hope your assessment is right for the Brewers sake and ours. However I didn't read it in one place or two but from a slew of sources that this was one of the weakest years in memory (a decade at least) for position players in the college pool. Agian hope that analysis is wrong, because if it isn't folks like bklynbrewscrew's sssessment of this draft might be dead on.

(1) Power bats. That appears to be the only tool that mattered to the Brewers. The system does have a number of toolsy speedy types but few power hitters. This draft is filled with big guys who the Brewers hope will hit some homeruns. That explains LaPorta also. They could care less if he will ever have a position if he hits HRs they will deal with it when the time comes.

(2) There are a lot of projectable arms, those pesky HS pitchers.

(3) There was a premium on LHP this year.

(4) I like both catchers taken early and the one taken in the 40s of the draft.

(5) The middle infielders all appear to be heavy on glove work but offensively limited. Again a bit of a shift from the projectable bats they lean toward. I am not convinced Brewer is going to be moved off SS soon.

I was hoping to come home today and see at least 1 top 10 guy signed... ohh well.

The Brewers have anounced half of the teams picks have signed. They decline to release the whole list , but Lucroy and Farris are among the signings. Negotiations are close with Laporta.

Excellent news. Lots of players already signed from past the 1st 10 rounds.

Have to imagine Merklinger, Fryer and Fonseca are also among the signees, but we won't know for a bit.

Ya, and I'll take th easy guess, and go with seniors Cline, Pasma, Rindal, and Baron.

Hopefully some of the others are HS talent, like Hague.

I'd like to see what the college boys can do... I hope LaPorta bounces right to WV or BC. WV would be good, even if he's lights out and gets bumped up to BC right away, at least that way they can't say they were bypassed by another top prospect.

Even if they sign LaPorta, they probably won't reveal it right away, since they tend to introduce the kids and have them in for a workout at Miller Park

also, I think this means they've signed more than they did in the last two drafts.

The one pattern that is definitely emerging over the years with Jack's drafts is that you really need to look at every player drafted to evaluate it. When he hits on a later round player it is not a fluke. The profile of player he drafts ends up with some high profile flameouts, but he consistently finds players in the later rounds who develop and that is not necessarily common or to be taken for granted. Arguably that was the key to Atlanta's success was their ability to consistently crank out MLB players from more than just the first round or foreign free agents.

Point two when considering the notion about the worst crop of college hitters... That doesn't mean that the players are not good. The third basemen last year were supposed to be the holy trinity of 3rd basemen for the next decade. That's pretty special. You can have a down year and it could still be the case that your top level talent is very good you just lack in depth, or you don't have the 5 tool players just the really good sluggers.
