Vote for your favorites in the 2015 BF.net Mid-Season Top 25 Prospect Listing

Just trolling for now, waiting for the deadline to submit. Some good lists have been posted so far! Surprised to see Taylor Williams is not on just about everyone's list. I get that he's injured, but to go from #8 to off the top 25 is pretty drastic.

I'm also waiting for Kirby to sign before posting anything, I'm never one to count my chickens early.

First of all I would preface to say that this is the most minor league talent I have seen in the Brewers org. for awhile. Gone are the days of Caleb Gindl being a top 10 prospect who I think would fall in the low teens on this list. Seems like every time we do an updated list the list gets better and better.

I do however question our method of rookie status because of the quote below from MLB's website. Wouldn't this exclude Wang and Knebel since they have been on MLB rosters for the allotted time? I don't think we should change it for this ranking but maybe the next one if I am interpreting this right.

"To be eligible for a list, a player must have rookie eligibility. To qualify for rookie status, a player must not have exceeded 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the Major Leagues, or accumulated more than 45 days on the active roster of a Major League club or clubs during the 25-player limit period, excluding time on the disabled list or in military service."

1. SS-Orlando Arcia-Our best prospect since Braun/Fielder/Weeks/Gallardo days. Four years ago I was reading about a 16 year old tearing up the Dominican league glad to see him having success. Really would have to wonder if he didn't get hurt in 2012 where the kid would be today.

2. SP-Kodi Medeiros-Love the peripherals and that he held his own to stay in Wisconsin so far. Keep it up Kodi.

3. OF-Trent Clark-I might be really bullish on Trent since he has barely played any games but I think he is pretty safe pick even if he is 18 to be a true #2 hitter on the Brewers some day.

4. SP-Taylor Jungmann-Not going to lie have had Jungmann barely in my top 10 but since coming to the show he has deserved this ranking for the time being.

5. SP-Jorge Lopez-What he has done at Biloxi lately should make us all happy. He deserves preseason top 100 status if he keeps it up

6. SS-Gilbert Lara-Even if it is AZL, success is better than struggling especially when you are 17 stateside.

7. RP-Corey Knebel-Hopefully battling with Will Smith for the closer role next spring.

8. SP-Devin Williams-Like him more than most, I still think he can be in the upper half of a rotation

9. OF-Clint Coulter-Splits scare me but I think the 30 HR potential will come back next year after he leaves the abyss of the FSL

10. SP-Nathan Kirby-All I had to see was that slider vs. Vanderbilt to love the guy.

11. SP-Cody Ponce

12. OF-Tyrone Taylor-Biggest faller on my list, hope he can heat up in the second half

13. SS-Jake Gatewood

14. OF-Monte Harrison

15. SP-Taylor Williams

16. OF-Victor Roache

17. OF-Demi Orimoloye

18. OF-Michael Reed-Underrated but I really wonder how he can fit in the long term plans of the organization

19. SP-Wei-Chung Wang

20. SP-Tyler Wagner

21. C-Carlos Leal-When I made my list thought I would be the only one who had him in their top 25. Boy was I wrong.

22. SP-Marcos Diplan

23. SP-Jorge Ortega

24. SP-Tyler Cravy

25. 2B-Chris Mcfarland

26. 1B-Tyrone Perry

Interesting to see how people will lose their minds over a hot first half, but when a guy struggles at a new level a little bit they drop like a rock.

There have already been multiple people rate Jungmann high and drop Tyrone Taylor waaaay down. Hard to believe 30innings at the MLB level makes you a highly touted prospect, but some slight struggle at AA(hardest level to many) just kills your value. People really liking performance/stats over potential/projectability.

Nothing wrong with that...just something that caught my eye.

I don't really see that, it is hard to compare position players to pitchers. Most of the position players ahead of Taylor on these lists have been high ceiling guys like Lara, Harrisin, Clark, Arcia and the like. It is not like Jason Rogers, Yadiel Rivera and Kyle Wren are getting votes ahead of him

This is absolutely correct. But I went with the easy route and ignored the 45 days on the active roster. It's just easier to look at a player, see his ABs or IP, and say if they are eligible or not.

Just a note regarding Kirby.

Feel free to rank him how you would expect. If for some reason he doesn't sign, just include a 26th player on your list. I'll just ignore Kirby if he doesn't sign. Or just go and edit your list later if he doesn't sign. Whatever works.

Alright guys. I'm excited about this, but i think we need to do a 30 or even 50 because the crew actually has some prospects again! I know some of you will think im crazy but just know i have always been REALLY high on Brandon Diaz so his ranking will not be a reaction to a hot month, but rather a reaction to him finally realizing some of his potential and that I expect it to continue going forward. I will also be including Nathan Kirby (hopefully it sends out some good signing juice) who I am also very excited about. So, here we go!!

1. Orlando Arcia -I dont think much needs to be said, what excites me most here is that the perceived gap between him and the rest just might not be as big as you all think, this system is making quite a turnaround.

2. Kodi Medieros - Nathan Kirby almost took this spot but Kodi gets it because of his age/level combo. If you lined them next to eachother and had them throw Kirby is the better pitcher. Love that the brewers finally have some left-handedness!

3. Trent Clark - Wow was a wrong for not liking the pick initially. Everything about this kid screams star!

4. Gilbert Lara - The brewers international investment is already paying dividends, he has a long way to go, but he looks like the real deal. The thing that has him this high more than anything (because he was going to hit) is the reports on his much better than advertized defense. If he stays at short the brewers have a real asset and future top 100 prospect.

5. Nathan Kirby - One of my biggest pet peeves is when the newest guys drafted get some much love from prospect rankers with no sample size and here I have done it twice. But, I watched a lot of Kirby and he is NASTY, if he signs he might be the steal of the draft. Before his injury he was in consideration to be a top 5 pick, and the brewers could be inline to have top 5 talent injected into their system.

6. Clint Coulter - Yes hes cooled off, but hes not your typical prolific Ker with right-handed power. His OBP + Power combo make him special and CC is finally a legit top prospect. I fully expect him to hit for better average once he escapes the FSL and space coast stadium.

7. Dev Williams - Is Dev the best right hander in the system? today probably not yet, but hes close and still has a LOT of room to get better, which is scary!

8. Tyrone Taylor - I almost feel bad having him this low, his tough start to the season should have been expected making the hardest jump in the minors. For me there are 2 distinct reasons he is 8th and not higher; 1. The brewers look like they have hit some home runs around him in their recent drafts and international signings 2. His lack of power so far, it would be easier to write off some of his struggles if when he was hitting it resembled his career power arc.

9. Jorge Lopez - The young man has truely taken a step, and maybe two or three, forward. Everything looks good, if he keeps it up the rest of the season people might start talking about his top of the rotation potential again!

10. Brandon Diaz - This guy is a player! Call me crazy be he has the tools to be a legit 20/40 center fielder (maybe 30/50!! no, im not that crazy). I thought he was an absolute steal in the 8th round and hes finally putting it together. His bat has thunder and his legs have lightening! Hes also able to put that speed to good use with an excellent OBP/walk rate, the only hole he has now is that he needs to cut down on the Ks.

11. Jake Gatewood - All the potential is still there. He was really turning a corner at wisconsin before the demotion (which was preplanned i know), so i wish they hadnt done that because it seems to have slowed the momentum he was building. Early reports look like he wont stick at short but that the brewers will keep him there as long as possible.

12. Taylor Williams - I know he hasnt thrown, but just the other day i came across a piece that said they were prepared to rank him the brewers top prospect going into the season and that despite his height the brewers finally found an ace... ouch... lets hope he still throws some innings this year.

13. Tyler Wagner - cant believe hes not in my top ten... speaks to the system more than his talent level. Dont let ONE poor major league start skew your opinion. This kid has a lot of talent and should be a nice mid rotation arm for the crew for a long time.

14. Cody Ponce - I have read a lot that he has top of the rotation potential and that he could be a quick mover. Normally a guy like him it looks like the brewers took the high floor low ceiling type, but thats not him. Had he been at a D1 school and had he not gotten hurt he, like kirby, could have been a top 5 pick.

15. Monte Harrison - this kid is still overflowing with potential, and this is exactly why you draft a guy like him. Even "safe" picks type players have a high probability of busting, but with Harrison, if hes starts to tap into those tools, look out! If he heats up for the stretch run he could be the fastest riser on this list.

16. Victor Roach - Hes finally been freed from Space Coast! Give him some time to adjust to the level. He needs to still cut down the Ks but the young man has taken a big step this season and the brewers might have made a nice gamble on the wrist injury.

17. Marcos Diplan - It looks like the brewers found something here! low level and small sample, but he could end up making that Gallardo trade look good down the road.

18. Michael Reed - Man hes a nice looking player and i never know where to rank him. Michael Brantley is my favorite comparison if that give you an idea of his skill set.

19. Demi Orimoloye - Could be the steal of the 2015 draft. There's a LOT to like here. I could have put him in the top ten, but I was able to make a better case for everyone i have ahead of him. If he keeps up his current pace he will be one of the fastest risers on my list.

20. Chris Mcfarland - Ive always like him and hes putting up the numbers. if he played literally any other position he would likely be 5 spots or so higher.

21. Brooks Hall - Hes had a tough stretch lately, but hes still a guy with mid to back end rotation potential at double A.

22. Wei-Chung Wang Wednesday - Okay, we all know he has the stuff. This season was miserable and then the brewers outrighted him and since then the results are living up to the stuff. Huge potential still, great stuff, could be a fast riser.

23. Miguel Diaz - I wasnt sure where to put him because he hasnt throw yet, MLB Pipeline has him 14th with an upper 90s fastball that sits in the mid 90s with a slider thats an outpitch and a developing change up. thats a great recipe and he deserves top 25!

24. Javi Salas - This guy has produced! He seems to fit what the brewers did with wagner. I think they have something here.

25. Cy Sneed - Hes already gotten a bump this season. His last outting was excellent. He might be a little better than everyone thought.

Were not on the list due to being/playing in the majors: Cravy, Sardinas, Jungmann, knebel, Perez, Goforth, Rogers, thornburg. I think its worth noting that Sardinas, jungmann, knebel, and thornburg have all been top 100 prospects and Perez was a fringe top 100 guy (like Tyrone Taylor). The brewers do have some nice depth.

Just missed the Cut - J. Ortega, N. Walters, Y. Rivera, J. Helweg, K. Wren, H. Johnson, D. Goforth, O. Garcia, T. Stokes, D. Denson

Still Prospects - A. Ventura, D Burkhalter, T. Neuhaus, C. Leal, J. Pena, A Pena, B. Suter, N. Rameriz, D. Demuth, L. Aviles, J. Yamamoto, K. Lindell, T. Perry, N. Pierre, J. Segovia, J. Oquendo, D. Houle, G. Fortuno, F. Mallen.

Seriously, we could to a 50!!

Even though by rules Jungman was still eligible, I didn’t include him since I think of him as a big league now.

1. Orlando Arcia

2. Gilbert Lara- Normally I put a decent amount of emphasis on production at higher levels but the early performance and reviews are backing the hype so #2 it is

3. Kodi Mederos- I admit to having difficulty figuring out how to rank our pitchers, a lot of guys having pretty good years with solid stuff, so Kodi gets the nod right now based on ceiling

4. Micheal Reed- my preference for production at a high level

5. Clint Coulter- I feel like he may explode next year at AA

6. Tyrone Taylor- Not the big step forward we would have liked, but also not a terrible first half young enough that a hiccup in the trajectory isn’t the end of the world. The down movement in many ways is more about the other talent that has been added

7. Jake Gatewood- the last month or so he has shown a lot of that talent under some tough circumstances

8. Jorge Lopez

9. Devin Williams-

10. Marcos Diplan

11. Cy Sneed

12. Tyler Wagner

13. Tyler Cravy- Doing it where it counts, but the ceiling is lower than some of the other guys

14. Monte Harrison- Unlike Gatewood he hasn’t shown me a long enough stretch of OK production yet could easily move back into my top 10 by the end of the season if he can show that he has started to figure things out

15. Trent Clark

16. Taylor Williams

17. Victor Roache- the batting average hasn’t been there yet in AA but the other secondaries are still showing up. A strong second half and he would move way up on my list as well.

18. Carlos Leal

19. Troy Stokes

20. Cody Ponce

21. Knebel

22. Damien Magnifico

23. Jorge Ortega

24. Yadiel Rivera

25. Wei-Chung Wang- Flashes of being really good not unexpected after his last couple of years

So many interesting names I left off, I didn’t jump yet on some of the draft picks from later round this year who are off to good starts yet, but that could change quickly.

Its kind of frustrating to see everyone making their own rules for eligibility... reillymcshane might not have it "perfect", but for what we are doing it seems like people could just simply follow along so we have and apples to apples comparison...

There have already been multiple people rate Jungmann high and drop Tyrone Taylor waaaay down. People really liking performance/stats over potential/projectability.

Obviously for us arm-chair GMs, production is easier to judge. However, I think that when you hit AA or AAA, production really does need to start taking precedent. I took a lot of flack for ranking Khris Davis over Kentrail Davis for the same reason. Its fine in A ball, but at AA or AAA, you need to start producing or you never make it to the show.

Also, my goal is to rank a players success at the MLB level. So Jungmann succeeding at the MLB level lowers the risk of his potential. Plus, I always was a bit higher on him than others. Nor did his AAA really change my opinion of him. A couple comments about his performance in the MiLB (i.e. coaching on him for pitching around someone) make me think he might do better at the MLB level. I think he thrives on the freedom and competition of MLB ball.

Taylor hasn't really done anything offensively since leaving his rookie ball. And while that could come around because he is still young, lots of questions swirl about his ability to stay in CF defensively. If he can't cut CF, he is a 4th OFer or maybe a Parra type. That risk drops him in my eyes. A weak performance at AA this year just amplifies that concern.

Typically I think of these lists as ranking a combination of upside versus probability of contributing value to the franchise at the major league level. Jungmann has already produced more fWAR (+0.6) than the vast majority of these players likely ever will, simply by making it to the majors and pitching well for a few starts. That's why I find it very hard to fit him into a prospect ranking. He's already contributing so to avoid placing him in the top-3/top-5 (where I don't think he belongs) it would have to be based on just his upside (which is probably a mid/bottom-rotation starter), but if we are ranking by pure upside then how is Lara not ahead of Arcia? If it was just a cup of coffee before he went back down to develop more (like Joey Gallo) then ok, but I feel like Jungmann/Knebel/Cravy have all graduated from being prospects.

Regarding the eligibility rules, I set up the guidelines, and I hope as many people as possible play along in the fashion it's meant to be - a fun, community affair. It's not brain surgery we are doing. No one is going to die if we make a decision one way or the other. No one is going to lose money. The world won't end. This is supposed to be fun. I'm all for discussing changes in the future, but once I set up the guidelines for this version, I'm not going to change things halfway through.

Again, this is supposed to be fun. But if people are horrified at the idea of putting a specific player on their list because they don't like the guidelines, then whatever. I can't stop that.

For now, I would rather have someone say, "Here's my list according to how you asked, but in the future I think you should handle a player such as (insert name) in (insert how to handle player)."

How people want to rank their players is really their business - just like 'professionals' who do it. Some people place more value on players who are closer to the majors, some people place value on upside, etc. I don't think either way is right or wrong. They are just different.

And as I noted in my previous post, this is supposed be fun. I want people to participate. Some people will know more (some times a lot more) than others. I think it's a great way to get people looking at the minor league system who might not have done so before.

With that in mind, I really prefer to avoid any criticism of other people's decisions. This is for fun (that silly 'fun' again). We're not going to test people to see if they know enough about the system to let them vote. We want people to get participate.

I should also note that general observations about how the voting is going shouldn't immediately be construed as criticism. If I say that it's interesting that Player A has dropped more than they thought he deserved, that isn't a slight against someone. It's just an observation. Now if a person says 'You idiots are letting Player A fall too far', then that's a different story.

Again, keep in mind what this is supposed to be for. It's a fun thing, designed to stimulate participation, encourage people to learn more, etc.

I know I'm being all Kumbyaish - but that's how I feel about this. I volunteered to run things, and we had fun. I don't want to turn the process into a fight.

Thank you.

Agree that there is no right way. Even in the professional lists you can see a lot of variance on how they rate prospects. Here I see a lot of people that love production, some like potential, some like youth, some like a players position, and some like a big mix. In the end we all will probably miss gauge a lot of prospects. That is just how it works.

I personally like balance in my rankings. I like to spread out my experienced prospects and brand new prospects. I see a lot of you guys rank the newcomers low while I like putting a player or two high.

I always enjoy fan made lists because of all the different view points on the players.

I think that the ultimate thing to remember at this forum is that we are all Brewers fans, and we want the team to do well.

That doesn't mean that we're not going to have passionate disagreements about what ought to be done, or where prospects rank. It means we're going to think that some folks should get playing time, others should be benched. Are the Brewers an 82-88 win team who needs a few tweaks, or do they need a major rebuild?

We've had disagreements in the past. I've even been alone in a few arguments in the past (keep Braun at third, move him back to third). But let's just keep in mind we're all Brewers fans, and we all want to see that day when the Brewers hoist a World Series Champions banner at Miller Park.

Didn't intend to set of a mini-firestorm. Given how crammed the list of guys was I wanted to put down I kind of punted on Jungman because at this point I really have no idea where he fits in. The minor league record and scouting reports have been so mixed over the years that 5th starter has seemed like a victory for a few years now and then goes nuts for his first half dozen starts? I'm loving it, but it's hard not to wonder if the league won't catch up to him, in which case despite already banked MLB production I wouldn't rate him in the top 20.

I love what Jungmann is doing in MLB so far! He is really proving a longtime argument for me and that is how promotions and lack of promotions can really affect performance. Minor league ball is as mental as it is talent. Anyway, based on my thoughts Jungmann is super hard to rank, just based on the pure stuff that i have seen over a few starts now the guy should be a top 100 prospect, but based on the minor league box scores hes not even top 500. Based on the scouting reports that were ALL OVER THE PLACE (and not one accurate....) on him he was somewhere in the middle. Then when you factor in that he has moved slowly through the system and is proving that hes a guy that needs to be challenged he has clearly been mishandled. Where do you rank a guy like that?

Jungmann is a great example of how these "experts" dont watch these guys that they are ranking.

After the Dodgers game, I'm thinking Jungmann is a legit MLB starter easily.

That said, the Brewers seem to have a half-dozen rotation prospects, counting Jungmann who were at AA or giher:

Taylor Jungmann - who may well be a #1

Tyler Cravy - posted some quality starts - and got some bad luck.

Brent Suter - 1.94 ERA at Biloxi, only ONE HOMER ALLOWED ALL SEASON!!!!

Hobbs Johnson - 3 HR allowed in 78 IP, and decent K and BB rates

Jorge Lopez - looks like he put it together

Tyler Wagner - 2.87 ERA at Biloxi

That's in addition to Tyler Thornburg, Jimmy Nelson, and Wily Peralta.

Huge drop off in hitting talent after T. Taylor. VRoache never leaves AAA and I don't think too much of Gatewood either. Wang, Hobbs, Suter, Strong are LOOGYs. Sardinas is Segura Lite. Ortega, Neuhaus, B. Hall, Y. Rivera, and Magnifico just miss the cut. N. Kirby is top 10 if he signs.
