Orlando Arcia listed by BA as #8 prospect in baseball

Brewer Fanatic Contributor

Baseball America has listed Orlando Arcia as the #8 prospect in baseball in their new mid-season top 50 rankings:

"He’s the best player in the Southern League as a 20-year-old"

http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/midseason-top-50-prospects2015/

I believe they only consider players in the minors, so recent call ups, like Buxton, are not on the list.

Talk about a rapid rise! All before he is even 21! Hopefully they don't foolishly rush him. Let him start in AAA next year with that core and then when time is right, bring him up next June or July if you need him

Wow, he was pre-season #95.

My guess is he'll get called up after his Super 2 date (or whatever it's called).

Wow! I am genuinely shocked (and pleased). I was thinking he was top-50, maybe top-25, but top-10 is elite.

This is the highest a Brewers prospect has been ranked since Rickie Weeks (#8 pre-2005), and the third highest in the history of Baseball America's Top 100s (Rickie Weeks, #4 pre-2004; Ben Sheets, #5 pre-2001). The caveat being that this is the midseason top-50 not the annual top-100 list, but still.

As an added bonus, I hope this means we can comfortably trade Segura and hopefully get another top-50/top-100 prospect in return. In theory you could try him at 2B, but he probably has more value as a trade chip right now.

Orlando Arcia is not going to be in the MLB this year(in my opinion) and I would be surprised if he is called up before September next year. Why rush, what is now considered an elite prospect, to the MLB when our team is garbage? He is 20 years old and there isn't much reason to push him.

On another note I would be shocked if he is rated this high on the annual Top 100 lists...but still he is finally getting the credit he deserves. He has the hitting ability, plate discipline, and defense to be an amazing SS for a long time.

Why would it shock you? He's putting up the season he's having as one of the youngest people in the Southern league against a bunch of the pitchers on the same list (Berrios, Stephenson, Snell,...). It's possible he will be ranked higher. He is killing the ball and playing high level MLB defense at 20. He's a stud. He's our very own Addison Russell. The last guy we has like this was Escobar, but I don't think he was ever this good; he certainly wasn't ranked this highly.

This doesnt surprise me one bit.

I got to see him earlier this year.

He's got quick hands, excellent plate discipline, and excellent defense.......at age 20.

Only thing that remains to be seen is if he will fill out and develop some more power.

I'd rank him firmly in the top 15 in baseball. He's that good.

Not to be picky but it think he is more a Fransisco Lindor. Not quite Russell talent/potential since he lacks to power.

I guess it is just more surprising a guy like Orlando Arcia has even made his way into the Top 10 conversation. He had no previous track record to really push him(high pick, high international guy). He has just worked his way up from nothing. I mean Top 10 prospects are guys to build around and be perennial All Star at the next level. That is truly elite status. I also thought that Top 50 midseason lists were greatly effected by that years stats, but their 2014 Top 10 looks to be nearly identicle to their 2015 pre season.

Now he just has to convince every one else he is a Top 10 guy. Baseball Prospectus rated him in the #25 range. Amazing how far one can come in just a couple years. I have always been an Arcia believer. Always thought he would end up in the Top 25.

Getting into the top 10 or 50 or even 100 prospects while a player is in the lower minors (I define that as below AA) is pretty tough. To do so, you need to put up some great numbers, and/or have an impressive pedigree. Arcia had neither of those things. His hitting was solid, but not great. He had signed, if I'm correct, for less than 100k. There was a lot to like - especially his defense - but lots of questions as well.

For lots of scouts and baseball writers the real test is when a player reaches AA. And Arcia has met that challenge with flying colors. If he had hit .280 people would be liking him a lot. But .300+, elite defense (at a premium position), growing power - those are the things you hope for in a player - and they all are emerging together for Orlando. It's sweet to see a Brewer come up like this. I think the last true blue-chip type player was Escobar. Alcides was never a Top 100 prospect until he broke out as a 21-year old at AA in 2008. He hit .328 with a .797 OPS. After that, he went all the way to #19 on BA's prospect list.

I'm betting the club moves Arcia to AAA later this year or to start 2016, and by mid-season next year, he's in Milwaukee.

Russell filled out physically at a younger age. He's not exactly a power hitter either just yet.

Arcia is slugging .454 at age 20 in Southern League. JJ Hardy slugged .428 in the same league at the same age. His potential is certainly 15-20 HR per year.

I think people have been high on him ever since his big year in the DSL

I'm a little surprised that he's moved this quickly, going from the DSL to AA in 4 years, and he's only gotten better. I know we were all hoping he would be this good but with our luck, I think we all just assumed the worst.

Edit: Some are talking about him not having a pedigree or being an unknown but he is the younger brother of Oswaldo Arcia, who was already mashing in the Twins minor leagues at the time Orlando was signed, so he was definitely on a lot of teams' radar.

This is Jack Burton in the Pork Chop Express, and I'm talkin' to whoever's listenin' out there.

Someone is sensitive about Arcia making it this year... Don't worry, by next season some time you can bust out your Arcia jersey...

Who cares how he says it, you can call out 90% of the people who post on here for doing the same thing at some point or another... This is a fan forum, it should be assumed that most posters will be stating their opinions. So THAT is annoying and so is not contributing anything even remotely meaningful to the discussion.... So yes carry on.

I think it is a mistake to rush him up. He will be 21 to start next season, why start eating up all his service before he is even close to his potential. Look how much he has grown each season! Continue to develop him, if by next June-July he is tearing cover off ball and banging hard on the door then fine but don't just call him up to call him up. Be smart about him.

Glad you have a crystal ball and know what this team will look like a year from now. What, you're going to wait until the team is contending to bring him up? He might be stuck in minors until he's 30. Elite talent needs to play against the best to reach their full potential. Facing the type of pitching guys face in AAA doesn't test elite players. Just look at how the Brewers battered the Phillies AAA pitching staff last week. Fun to watch, but probably doesn't make them any better against better major league staffs. I suspect he'll be brought up around June 1st next year. Segura will go in a deal this winter, and they'll use a stopgap be it Sardinas, Perez (who could also be at 3B) or Gomez for a couple months. All young players need some time to adjust to major league pitching. The idea is that in a year or two, when Arcia is reaching his full potential, he'll be able to help make this team into a contender.

Does he have to be added to the 40 man, I get confused on the rules especially considering he signed at 16.

Yes, please see the two posts starting here from Tuesday's Link Report.

Anything I'll be posting this week pertaining to minor league free agency or Rule 5 eligibility has been confirmed by the Brewers, and yes, Arcia's Rule 5 eligible.

What are you talking about a crystal ball? All I did was state my opinion on what I think the Brewers will do and partially what I think they should do. I'm sorry but if you can't handle someone's opinion a forum is not for you.

I did nothing different than what you just said yourself. Actually it gave me a good laugh. I am glad your crystal ball is working too!

In the BP mid-season top 50 he was at #31. So the BP guys don't seem to be quite as high on Arcia as the BA guys. Either way, he is one of the best prospects in the game and that is exciting as a Brewers fan.

My purely anecdotal impression is that BA tends to value defense at shortstop more than BP (which is probably closer to the reality of how teams/GMs evaluate players, but further from what us as fans are hoping for, i.e. star quality)
