Perhaps the Brewers should schedule a few more day games in Maryvale. 16 runs on 20 hits! Every starter in the Brewers lineup came through with at least one hit. Shortstop Gilbert Lara went 4-for-5 with a double, a triple and four runs batted in. 14th round draft pick Tyrone Perry reached base in all four of his trips to the plate, collecting a walk, a single, a double and a home run. 4th rounder Demi Orimoloye went 3-for-5. Venezuelan outfielder Joantgel Segovia had two hits and two walks out of the leadoff spot while Yerald Martinez and Jorge Quiterio each added two hits.

 

Things were equally as impressive on the pitching side where four pitchers combined to shut out the Reds. 3rd rounder Nash Walters started and went four innings. He gave up only two hits and struck out five. Former DiamondBacks righty Derek Eitel followed with two hitless innings of relief before giving way to 20-year-old lefty Quintin Torres-Costa. Costa went two innings and struck out four. 31st round pick Colton Cross tossed the ninth inning and gave up one hit and struck out one.

Threshers Survive Wild One on The Fourth

Manatee Rally Comes Up Just Short in Front of 5,259

Viera, Fla.- There were plenty of fireworks to be had both during and after the game on Saturday night as the Clearwater Threshers (8-2, 45-35 overall) held off a late charge from the Brevard County Manatees (3-6, 32-46 overall) for a 7-6 victory in front of a crowd of 5,259 at Space Coast Stadium.

 

The Threshers struck right away against Manatees starting pitcher Cy Sneed, who was making his first start with the team. Malquin Canelo and Carlos Tocci each singled to center to start the game. Following an Andrew Pullin groundout, Rhys Hoskins walked. Chace Numata then tapped a ball back to Sneed, who threw home for the force out. Willians Astudillo delivered with a two-run base hit to center to put Clearwater on top. However, the inning would come to an end during that sequence, as Numata would be thrown out trying to advance to third.

 

The Manatees' first response would come in the bottom of the second against Threshers' starting pitcher Yacksel Rios. Cameron Garfield doubled to right with one out and then advanced 90 feet on a groundout by Jose Pena. Angel Ortega appeared to hit into a routine groundout to second but Astudillo dropped the throw at first, allowing Garfield to score and the inning to continue. That would be all the Manatees would muster for the inning as Omar Garcia fouled out to first.

 

Clearwater would flex their offensive muscle once again in the top of the fourth, which started with a one-out single from Numata. That brought up Astudillo, who launched a two-run homer into the Thresher bullpen in left field, his third of the season, to give the Threshers a three-run lead.

 

The 'Tees fought back instantly once again as Garrett Cooper worked his way on with a one-out single. Garfield followed with a single and would advance to second when Mitch Walding's throw to first went wide, moving Cooper to third in the process. With Pena at the plate, Rios threw a wild pitch, allowing Cooper to score. After Pena walked, Garfield came in to score when Ortega grounded out to first. Pena would be stranded at second when Garcia popped out on a bunt attempt.

 

The Threshers would give themselves some cushion over the next few innings, starting in the top of the fifth against new Manatee reliever Tristan Archer. Carlos Tocci began the activity with a one-out base hit to center. After Pullin flew out, Tocci would swipe second with Hoskins at the plate. Hoskins would reward him by plating him on a single to left, although he would be thrown out trying to stretch for a double.

 

Clearwater would continue to tack on in the following frame, this time with Numata reaching on a base hit to lead off. He would advance to third on groundouts by Astudillo and Angelo Mora. Following a walk to Walding, Chase Harris' infield single brought home Numata to extend the lead even further.

 

It appeared as if Clearwater had locked the game away in the top of the seventh, with Pullin as the catalyst, thanks to a one-out double to right. After Hoskins popped out, Numata placed a single down the right field line to score Pullin and put the Threshers up by four.

 

Things would become interesting again in the bottom half of the inning, as Brevard County would show their resolve against new Threshers reliever Miguel Nunez. Ortega got it started with a liner to left. Garcia then reached the hard way, as he would be hit on the hip by a pitch. Following a Chris McFarland flyout, Michael Ratterree brought Ortega home on a single to left. Clint Coulter then dropped a base hit into center that scored Garcia and moved Ratterree to third. Taylor Brennan lifted a fly ball deep enough to center to allow Ratterree to sprint home and bring the Manatees within one run. Nunez's night would come to an abrupt end following a walk to Cooper. As Jesen Dygestile-Therrien faced his first batter, Garfield, he threw a pitch that bounced off of the foot of Numata and went up the third base line, putting both runners in scoring position. Garfield struck one well down the right field line, but Harris was able to run it down to keep the Thresher lead in tact.

 

Ulises Joaquin would be responsible for recording the game's final three outs, although it did not start well as McFarland reached on an error by Canelo. The shifted positioning of the Thresher outfield would pay dividends as Ratterree launched a ball to left and Coulter ripped a ball to center that under circumstanced would have likely been extra bases, but instead ended up being two long outs. Victory was assured when Joaquin got Brennan to ground out to third to end the game.

 

Every Thresher recorded a hit on the night, with Numata collecting three. Tocci recorded two, as did Astudillo, who picked up four RBI in the process. Rios earned the win by giving up just one earned run on three hits over six innings while striking out four and walking two.

 

Sneed lasted just four innings, throwing 84 pitches in the process. He gave up four runs on six hits in addition to three strikeouts and one walk. Archer threw four innings of relief, giving up three runs on seven hits. Garfield had the only multi-hit game for the Manatees, as well as the only extra-base hit.

 

The two teams will reconvene on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. as LHP Wei-Chung Wang (5-2, 4.72 ERA) will look to continue as his recent strong run. RHP David Whitehead (5-6, 4.06 ERA) will get the start for the Threshers.

Rattlers rally to beat Beloit

Victory ends six-game losing streak

GRAND CHUTE, WI - On Saturday night, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers had an early lead and lost it against the Beloit Snappers for the third night in a row. But Wisconsin rallied to retake the lead late and held on for an 8-5 win over their in-state rivals at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The victory ended Wisconsin's six-game losing streak.

 

Brandon Diaz, who would figure into Wisconsin's rally in the seventh inning, started the Rattlers half of the first with a single. He would score later in the inning on single by Carlos Leal.

 

The Rattlers (26-54 overall, 3-7 second half) plated two more runs in the bottom of the second. Alan Sharkey reached on an error and Sthervin Matos singled. Diaz and Blake Allemand followed the first out of the inning with consecutive RBI singles and Wisconsin was up 3-0.

 

Sharkey delivered a two-out triple in the bottom of the fifth to drive Leal home from first base with two outs and Wisconsin was up 4-0.

 

The Snappers (31-49, 5-5) were quiet for the first five innings against Wisconsin starter Angel Ventura as they had just four hits. That changed in the sixth.

 

Ventura allowed a single to Joe Bennie and walked the next two batters to load the bases. Justin Higley was next and he singled to drive in a pair of runs to cut Wisconsin's lead in half. Higley's single also knocked Ventura out of the game.

 

Luke Curtis entered the game for Wisconsin and struck out the first batter he faced, but a single by Shawn Duinkerk loaded the bases. Tim Proudfoot knocked in the tying runs with a check-swing, bloop single to right just inside the line. The hit also moved Duinkerk around to third base. James Harris gave the Snappers the lead with a sacrifice fly to right-center that was deep enough to score Duinkerk.

 

The Rattlers responded in the seventh inning. Elvis Rubio blooped a popup to shallow right that was just out of the reach of a diving Duinkerk. Rubio saw the ball deflect back towards the infield and hustled into second with a double. Sharkey drew a walk and that was all for Beloit reliever Cody Stull.

 

Dominique Vattuone entered and walked Sthervin Matos on four pitches to load the bases for Tucker Neuhaus.

 

Neuhaus slapped a 1-0 pitch from the side-arming right-hander into left field to drive in Rubio with the tying run. That would bring Diaz to the plate.

 

Diaz lined a single to center to score both Sharkey and Matos and the Rattlers were back in front 7-5.

 

Curtis, who had worked a scoreless top of the seventh, got the first out of the eighth and made way for Tyler Linehan. The lefty retired the next two batters to let the Rattlers try to add on a run in the bottom of the eighth.

 

That is exactly what happened as Dustin DeMuth lined an opposite-field homer to left to start the Wisconsin eighth. DeMuth's fifth home run of the year gave the Rattlers an 8-5 lead.

 

Linehan worked a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the Wisconsin victory.

 

Diaz went 3-for-5 with a runs scored and three RBI to pace Wisconsin's twelve-hit attack. Sharkey was on base five times on Saturday night as he reached on an error, three walks, and the triple.

 

Khris Davis, in game four of his five-game rehabilitation assignment with Wisconsin from the Milwaukee Brewers, went 0-for-5. Davis is scheduled to play again on Sunday for the Timber Rattlers in the last game of his rehab.

 

The final game of the series is Sunday afternoon. Cody Ponce, the 2nd round pick of the Brewers in the 2015 draft, will make his Midwest League debut as the starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Beloit has named Daniel Gossett (3-7, 5.42) as their starter. Game time is 1:05pm.

 

Military Appreciation Weekend presented by American National Bank concludes with a silent auction for the caps worn by the players and coaches in the two games against the Snappers. Proceeds from the auction will go to Fox Valley Veterans Emergency Fund.

 

Fans may play catch on-field courtesy of Rasmussen College starting at noon. Players and coaches will wear their Brewers-themed jerseys for this game as part of Brewers Sunday presented by 107.5, The Fan. Players will be available for a postgame autograph session sponsored by Tundraland Home Improvements, too.

Another lopsided contest in the Brewers organization today with the good guys coming out on top. It might be time to start giving some attention to 18-year-old Panamanian Carlos Luna who turned in another quality start, tossing seven scoreless and striking out six to earn the win. He's gone at least six innings in each of his last four outings and saw his ERA drop to 1.52. The 6'1" righty now has 25 strikeouts compared to just four walks on the season.

 

Adolfo Morillo singled and tripled in five at bats to push his average up over .300 for the season. Marcos Pinero reached base four times with two singles, a walk and a hit-by-pitch. Yerison Pena, Josue Herrera and Javier Castillo each added two base hits for the Brewers. Perhaps most impressively, the Brewers played an error-free game in this one.

MONTGOMERY, AL - The Shuckers had no answers for Biscuits' starter Jake Faria on Independence Day as the the 21-year-old tossed seven-not hit innings and matched a Montgomery franchise -record with 14 strikeouts. Victor Roache broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff triple in the top of the eighth inning against reliever Jared Mortensen. Faria left after throwing 108 pitches.

 

Faria's (1-0) 14 strikeouts were also a career high as he notched his first win at the Double-A level. Biloxi managed multiple baserunners on back-to-back two-out walks to Michael Reed (1x3, RBI, BB) and Nick Ramirez (0x3, BB) in the fourth, but the righty out of La Palma, CA struck out Taylor Green (0x3, B) to end the threat.

 

Shuckers starter Brooks Hall (7-5, 4 IP, 5 R, 4 H, 3 BB, SO) allowed a run in the first inning on a RBI double by Johnny Field, Jr. The South Carolina Native needed 37 pitches to work through the first frame before coasting through the next two innings. Saturday was the third-straight start Hall had allowed five or more runs after doing so just once in his previous 12 outings.

 

Montgomery (5-3) opened the game up in the fourth, plating four runs on three hits, including a three-run home run by Leonardo Reginatto to make it a 5-0 deficit for the Shuckers.

 

Roache (1x3, R, 3B) broke up the no-hitter in the eighth with a leadoff triple off of reliever Jared Mortensen, and scored on a groundout by Adam Weisenburger (0x3, RBI) to end the shutout.

 

The Shuckers will look to end their two-game losing streak on Sunday when LHP Brent Suter (4-3, 1.88) will face off against RHP Jamie Schultz (5-4, 3.62). First pitch is scheduled for 5:35 p.m., with coverage beginning at 5:20 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network.
