Josh Fellhauer was all smiles Wednesday night following his walk-off RBI single in the 10th inning to give the Biloxi Shuckers a 2-1 victory over the Mississippi Braves.

 

What Fellhauer described as his "highest moment of the season" served as a brief reprieve from what has been an extremely difficult period for the California native.

Wuilder Rodriguez and Jesus Brea combined to shutout the Cubs on two hits as the Brewers pulled out a 1-0 victory on Friday. Rodriguez went five scoreless, allowing two hits to earn the win and Brea worked the final four hitless to record the save. The 19-year-old Brea has yet to give up an earned run through his first nine appearances. He has 13 strikeouts in 13 innings of work and has held opposing hitters to a .136 average. Marcos Pinero had two hits, a walk, a stolen base and a run scored while Javier Castillo went 2-for-3 with the game's lone RBI.

BILOXI, MS - On a night that included a tough 4-3 loss by the Shuckers to the M-Braves, 10 walks, five errors a post-game wedding and thrilling fireworks show, a sellout crowd and MGM Park-record 6,231 fans left with a smile on Friday night.

 

The Shuckers had two runners in scoring position in the ninth, but left them stranded in the one-run loss. Biloxi did take two of three in the series and are 8-4 in 12 games at their new home. Over the first 12 games, 48,167 fans have attended, an average of 4,014 per game The Shuckers, winners of nine-straight series will hit the road for a 10-game road trip, starting with a five-game set with the Montgomery Biscuits on Saturday.

 

Biloxi broke through with a two-out rally in the bottom of the eighth, plating three runs with two outs after trailing 2-0.

 

Josh Fellhauer (0x0, R, 2 SB) started the frame with a leadoff walk and stole second on a strikeout to Nathan Orf (1x5). Orlando Arcia (1x4) singled one out later to put two runners on for Michael Reed (0x4, R). Both runners advanced 90 feet on stolen bases and Reed hit a bullet to second that was misplayed by Eric Garcia, allowing both men to score and tie the game at two. Reed scored on an errant pickoff attempt by David Peterson that sailed into right field, with Reed coming in on the misplay by Garcia.

 

Mike Strong (3-1) came on for the save attempt in the ninth, but gave up a double, home run, recorded an out and gave up a single before Carlos Subero called on Damien Magnifico (0.2 IP) to finish the inning. The righty from Mesquite, Texas induced an around-the-horn double play to keep the Shuckers down a run going into the bottom of the ninth.

 

Biloxi (5-3) put its fifth-consecutive leadoff man on with a walk to Tyrone Taylor (0x3, BB) and Fellhauer would reach two outs later on a catcher's interference to put the go-ahead run on first. Just like in the eighth, both runners moved up on stolen bases to put two in scoring position with two outs. Orf battled with Tyler Jones, but ultimately lined out to second to end the game.

 

Shuckers' starter Hobbs Johnson needed only seven pitches to work a 1-2-3 first, but labored through the second inning, walking three and allowing a two-run home run to Kevin Ahrens to put Biloxi in a 2-0 hole. The southpaw surrendered a season-high six walks in five innings, while allowing the two runs on two hits and four strikeouts.

 

Steve Janas made his Double-A debut for the Mississippi Braves and had a no-hitter through four innings, allowing just one base runner on a hit-by-pitch to Adam Weisenburger (1x3). Taylor Green (1x3, BB) broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff single in the fifth, but would be erased on a fielder's choice. Janas has no surrendered a run in 28.2 innings, going back to April 28, while with the Carolina Mudcats.

 

Mississippi (4-4) committed a season-high five errors in the victory

 

Biloxi will travel to Montgomery, AL to take on the Biscuits for game one of a five-game series. RHP Brooks Hall (7-4, 4.31) will look to rebound from his last start in which he allowed eight runs in two innings against the Jacksonville Suns. The Biscuits will send out RHP RHP Jake Faria (0-0, 3.00) First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:20 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Mike Strong had been pretty tough on lefties this season which is likely why he was called upon in the ninth instead of Magnifico, but the move backfired when a couple of left-handed hitters tagged him pretty good.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Barry Zito spun another terrific outing and Dayan Viciedo singled home the winning run in the eighth, as Nashville swiped the series finale against Colorado Springs, 2-1.

 

Viciedo stepped into the batter's box with two away and runners at first and second in the eighth inning during a 1-1 tie. The designated hitter went with a 2-1 pitch, slapping it into the gap on the right side of the infield to score Craig Gentry. Viciedo's second RBI of the season helped Nashville win their 12th one-run game this season.

 

Viciedo had the hit, but it would have been in vain if Zito had not posted his team-leading ninth quality start.

 

The left-hander had struggled in two prior starts against Colorado Springs this year (8.1 IP, 8 ER), but pitched with authority all night long. Capable of keeping the Sky Sox hitters off balance with his crafty stuff, the veteran struck out six and issued just one walk in his seven innings. He retired 14 in a row at one point allowing a mere four hits.

 

The Sounds got on the board first and improved to 27-18 in games when they get the initial tally of a game. Hitting out of the seventh spot in the lineup, Jake Smolinski flashed his power in the third. The outfielder clubbed a ball off the end of his bat that landed near the Hyundai picnic area over the left field wall. The leadoff shot was Smolinski's first as a Sound and fifth in PCL action this season.

 

Colorado Springs finally broke Zito's rhythm when Luis Sardinas pieced together a two-out walk in the sixth. Bryan Petersen and Matt Clark both followed with singles to help the visiting team knot the score at 1-1. The hits were their first since the second inning.

 

Sky Sox starter Drew Gagnon entered the Friday night game with a 1-9 record, but seemed to match Zito with every pitch. The hurler allowed the solo shot to Smolinski, but limited the Sounds to four hits. The right-hander posted his fourth quality start of the season and exited after six frames.

 

The crowd of 10,891 marked the 11th time that the Sounds have sold out at First Tennessee Park this season. They entered Friday night averaging 7,660 fans a game, the fourth-best mark in the PCL.

Snappers crack Rattlers in ten innings

BELOIT, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers suffered another heartbreaking defeat on Friday night. The Rattlers saw a pair of leads evaporate at Pohlman Field and had to watch the Beloit Snappers celebrate after a 6-5 walkoff win in ten innings.

 

Wisconsin (25-54 overall, 2-7 second half) took an early lead with three runs in the top of the second inning. Elvis Rubio was hit by a pitch with one out. Alan Sharkey followed with single to left on a hit-and-run. Rubio went around to third and drew a throw. Sharkey saw the throw go into third and made second base without a throw. Sthervin Matos was next and his grounder to third got in a pair of runs when the throw to first was wild. Later in the inning, Brandon Diaz drove in Matos with a sacrifice fly and the Rattlers had a 3-0 lead.

 

The Rattlers added to their lead in the third inning. Elvis Rubio drove in Dustin DeMuth from third base with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.

 

Wisconsin could not hold this lead against the Snappers (31-48, 5-4).

 

Jon Perrin, Milwaukee's 27th round pick in the 2015 draft, made his Midwest League debut as the starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers on Friday and worked the first four innings in scoreless fashion with only two hits against him. Perrin struck out the first batter he faced in the bottom of the fifth, but gave up consecutive singles to Max Kuhn and Shawn Duinkerk. Perrin got the second out on a force play at second, but Yairo Munoz beat out the throw to first for what could have been an inning-ending double play. Then, Munoz stole second to get into scoring position. Iolana Akau was next and he singled to right to drive in two runs. Perrin would leave the game for Scott Lieser.

 

Justin Higley greeted Lieser with a long, two-run home run to right to tie the game 4-4.

 

Perrin's official line was 4-2/3 innings pitched, five hits, three runs, no walks, and three strikeouts.

 

The Rattlers caught the Snappers by surprise to take the lead in the top of the seventh. Blake Allemand and Khris Davis drew walks with one out against Jerad Grundy and a grounder to first moved both runners into scoring position. Carlos Leal bunted with the third baseman back and Allemand scored as Leal reached first without a throw to give the Rattlers a 5-4 lead.

 

Wisconsin tried to manufacture another run in the inning. Rubio was at the plate when Leal took off for second to draw a throw to let Davis score, but the Snappers were ready for this play and Davis was tagged out in a rundown between third and home for the final out of the frame.

 

The Rattlers could not protect this lead either.

 

Zach Cooper walked Sandber Pimentel, the leadoff batter, in the bottom of the ninth. Cooper got the first out and nearly ended the game on a strike-'em out, throw-'em out double play as he got the strikeout for the second out of the ninth, but pinch-runner James Harris was just safe at second base. Cooper would throw a wild pitch to allow Harris to take third with pinch-hitter Argenis Raga at the plate, but he was ahead 1-2 in the count.

 

Raga fouled off one two-strike pitch to stay alive before lining a double down the line in left to send the tying run home

 

Leal nearly gave the Rattlers the lead in the top of the tenth. He hit a high, deep drive to the wall in right field as the leadoff batter against Carlos Navas. But, Higley got back to the wall, leaped, and made the catch to rob Leal of a home run. The next two batters would reach against Navas, but the Rattlers could do nothing with that. Wisconsin wound up stranding ten runners in the game and going 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

 

Luis Ortega took over on the mound for the Rattlers in the bottom of the tenth and walked the first two batters of the inning on eight pitches. Ortega got the first out of the inning on a force play at second, but that left runners at the corners for Jose Brizuela.

 

Brizuela hit a chopper to second with the infield a couple of steps off the infield grass and the Rattlers tried to turn two end the inning. Wisconsin got the out at second, but Brizuela beat the throw to first to allow the winning run to score.

 

Wisconsin has lost six straight games. The last four losses have been by one run. The last two losses were walkoff defeats at the hands of the Snappers in Beloit.

 

The series moves to Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium on Saturday night. Angel Ventura (3-2, 2.47) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Heath Fillmyer (0-8, 7.87) is set to start for the Snappers. Game time is 6:35pm.

 

Celebrate Independence Day evening and Military Appreciation Weekend with the Timber Rattlers and American National Bank. Current and former military personnel receive a free ticket for reserved bleacher seat by showing military ID or proof of service at the box office for July 4th.

 

Davis is scheduled to conclude his rehabilitation assignment as he plays for the Rattlers in the final two games of the series with the Snappers at home on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.

 

Wisconsin Timber Rattlers players and coaches will wear patriotic jerseys and caps for this game. The jerseys will be available for bid in a silent auction during the game. Proceeds from the auction will go to the Fox Valley Veterans Emergency Fund. Additionally, a veteran in attendance will receive a surprise "Extreme Bathroom Makeover" from Tundraland Home Improvements with the new bathroom being unveiled to the winner during the game! Stick around after the game for an All-American Fireworks display presented by FOX 11.

Dunedin, Fla.- The Dunedin Blue Jays' (4-5, 36-43 overall) offense led the charge in a 12-4 win over the Brevard County Manatees (3-5, 32-45) on Friday night at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium.

 

Dunedin scored in six different innings and smacked 17 hits in the victory. Rowdy Tellez hit two home runs and drove in four runs.

 

The Manatees opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. With two outs and the bases empty, Clint Coulter smacked a solo home run to left field. It was Coulter's 11th home run of the season and first homer since June 13.

The Blue Jays responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame against Brevard starter Jorge Ortega. Matt Dean tied the score at one with an RBI double. Tellez followed up with a two-run homer to right that gave the Jays a 3-1 lead.

 

Brevard County fought back with a run in the top of the second. Garrett Cooper led off the frame with his 21st double of the year. Two batters later, Paul Eshleman drove home Cooper with an RBI single to center.

 

The Dunedin offense answered immediately in the bottom of the frame with a pair of runs. With two outs and nobody on, Anthony Alford tripled to right field and scored on a throwing error by Chris McFarland. Richard Urena and Dean hit back-to-back doubles to make it 5-2, Blue Jays.

 

The Jays scored two runs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to break the game wide open. Urena hit an RBI single and Dean recorded an RBI on a fielder's choice in the fourth.

 

Ortega (6-5, 2.33 ERA) was removed after four innings. He allowed seven runs - six earned runs - on 10 hits. He did not walk a batter and fanned one.

Mark Williams pitched the fifth and the sixth, and surrendered four total runs on four hits and a walk. Emilio Guerrero drilled a run-scoring triple in the fifth. Martin Medina scored Guerrero on a sacrifice fly to make it 9-2 Dunedin. In the sixth, Tellez smacked his second homer of the game and fifth of the season. His two-run blast gave the Blue Jays a nine run cushion.

 

Brevard County plated two runs in the seventh. Angel Ortega scored Cameron Garfield on an RBI double. Omar Garcia then drove home Ortega with a single to left field.

 

Christian Lopes' eighth-inning sacrifice fly against Preston Gainey completed the scoring.

 

Tyler Spurlin tossed a scoreless seventh inning for the Manatees.

 

Luis Santos (5-6, 5.08 ERA) recorded the win. He gave up four runs - three earned - on eight hits.

 

The Manatees will host the Clearwater Threshers to kick off a three-game series tomorrow. RHP Cy Sneed is scheduled to make his first start for Brevard County. The Threshers will send RHP Yacksel Rios (3-2, 3.32 ERA) to the bump.

Jorge Ortega worked 83 innings last year and has now about matched that for this season. The Blue Jays had a strategy of swinging early in the count since Jorge gives up so few walks. Other teams have been doing the same thing. 40 innings between walks will do that. Clint Coulter with a first inning home run but then struck out the next 3 at bats. Tyler Spurlin was the one pitcher who gave up no runs but did give up two hits in his one inning.

M-Braves pull off wild 4-3 win over Shuckers before huge crowd

BILOXI – The Shuckers came up a run short on the scoreboard, but a stadium record crowd of 6,231 flowed into MGM Park Friday night and witnessed a wild contest.

 

A pair of two-run home runs to left field handed the Mississippi Braves a 4-3 victory over Biloxi.

 

The decisive homer came in the top of the ninth when the left-handed Rio Ruiz went opposite field off Biloxi left-hander Mike Strong to regain the lead for good for the M-Braves.

 

It was an unusual game that featured five errors by the M-Braves and none by the Shuckers.

 

The Shuckers (5-3) scored all three of their runs on three errors by the M-Braves (4-4) in the bottom of the eighth.

 

With men on second and third and two out in the eighth, Michael Reed sent a hard hit ball toward Mississippi second baseman Eric Garcia, who failed to gather the ball after it bounced in front of him. With the ball rolling into center field, Josh Fellhauer and Orlando Arcia crossed home to tie the game at 2-2.

 

Soon after, M-Braves relief pitcher David Peterson's pickoff toss to first missed its mark and rolled well into foul territory toward the bullpen.

 

Reed, who runs well, rounded second and headed for third where he saw manager Carlos Subero motioning him to keep moving.

 

When Garcia again failed to get a handle on the ball, Reed sped home and barely beat the tag at the plate.

 

“I wasn't (sending him), but I decided to once I saw Garcia kick it,” Subero said. “That's why I created so much depth down the line. Once I saw it kicked, I'm like we've got to go for this and try to take the lead.”

 

Reed said that he couldn't ever recall scoring from first on a pickoff attempt.

 

“I wasn't expecting go home, but as I was rounding second he was still giving me the go,” Reed said. “I just kept going and got in there.”

 

It provided the high moment of the game for the Shuckers and lifted the large crowd to its feet.

 

Biloxi had a shot to tie or regain the lead in the bottom of the ninth after Mississippi took the 4-3 lead.

 

Tyrone Taylor took third and Fellhauer moved to second on a double steal with two outs in the ninth.

 

Nathan Orf fouled back three pitches and worked a 2-2 count before lining out to a diving Garcia at second base.

 

“He's been so clutch this year,” Reed said of Orf. “He put together a great at-bat. You can't ask him to do anything more. The pitcher did his job.”

 

M-Braves starting pitcher Steve Janas, who made his Double-A debut Friday, pushed his scoreless innings streak to 28 2/3 innings. He gave up three hits, struck out three and walked none in 5 2/3 innings.

 

“He was just hitting his spots,” Reed said. “His pitches were working. His slider, changeup, fastball … He was locating. When you do that, you're tough to hit.”

 

Peterson (1-0) picked up the victory in one inning in relief, giving up no earned runs. Tyler Jones earned the save.

 

Strong (3-1) took the loss by giving up two earned runs on three hits in 1/3 of an inning.

 

Biloxi starting pitcher Hobbs Johnson allowed two earned runs on two hits in five innings. He walked six and struck out four.

 

Mississippi's first homer of the night was a two-run blast by third baseman Kevin Ahrens in the second inning.

 

Friday's crowd broke the previous stadium mark of 5,216 by more than 1,000 fans. All areas of the stadium were packed, including the grass berm behind the right field fence.

 

“It seems like (attendance) keeps getting better,” Subero said. “We had great support by the crowd and they get into it, which is important.”

 

The Shuckers, who took two-of-three in its series with Mississippi, will travel to take on the Montgomery (Ala.) Biscuits at 6:35 PM on Saturday.

 

Left-hander Brent Suter (4-3, 1.88) is set to start Saturday for Biloxi and lefty Blake Snell (5-2, 1.69) will go for the Generals.

Brewers come alive in the 14th inning, beat Mustangs

BILLINGS - The Helena Brewers' marathon with the Billings Mustangs ended in the 14th inning Friday night at Dehler Park, with the Brew Crew coming out on the right side of a 12-9 decision.

 

Helena (6-9), which has won three of its last four games, came alive in the top of the 14th when Monte Harrison's two-run single broke an 8-8 deadlock. Troy Stokes then scored on a passed ball and Steven Karkenny knocked in Harrison on a sacrifice fly to conclude the four-run frame.

 

The Mustangs' Reydel Medina answered with a solo homer in the bottom of the inning, his third homer of the game, but it was as close as Billings would get.

 

Harrison paced the Brewers at the plate with a 5 for 6 performance and Stokes continued his torrid hitting going 2 for 5 with a triple. Jake Gatewood added his ninth double in nine days.

 

Carlos Belonis had a solo home for the Brewers and George Iskenderian had three RBI. The Brewers left 13 runners on base.

 

Bubba Blau (1-3) earned the win for the Brewers, giving up one run and two hits in four inning of work for the Brewers, who again take on the Mustangs at 1:00 PM Saturday (2:00 Central) in Billings.

Harrison, Helena survive Medina's big night

Brewers prospect collects five hits, Reds prospect homers three times

With the challenge of the Midwest League set aside for the moment, Monte Harrison's mind is clear and focused, even when things aren't falling his way. On nights when they are, he's a talent to be seen.

 

Harrison ripped five singles for the highest single-game total of his career and accounted for seven runs on Friday night as Rookie-level Helena survived a three-homer effort from Reydel Medina in a wild 12-9, 14-inning win at Billings.

 

Friday night's seesaw matchup saw lead changes befitting a basketball game in the eighth inning. Though the Brewers had led since the first inning, Medina willed his offense back into the game with a leadoff blast to right-center in the seventh and another to right-center that brought home the first three tallies of a five-run eighth.

 

"He's been better with his pitch selection, definitely," Mustangs hitting coach Jolbert Cabrera said of the Cuban slugger. "He's setting his foot down early, and that's helping a lot. When he's not chasing bad pitches, he has a pretty good swing, he has a big league swing. The ball just jumps off his bat."

 

While Medina and the Mustangs roared in front, the Brewers didn't fold. Helena responded with three runs in the top of the ninth as Harrison, who had hits in the first, fifth and eighth as well and scored twice, bounced another single to center to drive home Troy Stokes. After stealing second for the second time, the Brewers' No. 3 prospect scored on Jake Gatewood's single to center that gave Helena an 8-7 lead.

 

It didn't last long.

 

Billings evened things in the bottom of the ninth and forced extra innings on an RBI groundout by Reds first-round pick Tyler Stephenson.

 

"It's a lot just to know that even though those guys can come back and score a couple runs, we've always got time," Harrison said. "We've always got bats in the lineup that can do things. I have a lot of trust in my teammates that we're going to get the job done either way."

 

It took a while, but Harrison and Helena did just that. After three Brewers walked with one out to load the bases in the 14th, Harrison broke the tie. He ripped his fifth hit of the night to left field to drive in two runs, took second on the throw, moved up on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly by Steven Karkenny.

 

After batting .157 through his first 13 Pioneer League games with no multi-hit performances, Harrison affirmed a belief in his approach with Friday's breakout night.

 

"I'd rather go 0-for-4 with three lineouts," he said. "That's just me personally. Anybody can tell you they'd want to go 3-for-4 with three little bloops or infield singles. No, I want to square the ball up every time. This is about player development. This is about learning how to be consistent, learning how to square balls up and have good timing and stuff like that.

 

"I've been hitting balls hard, just lining out, getting unlucky, you could say, but this is baseball. I just tell myself, don't get frustrated. Just keep swinging the bat and good things happen when you put the ball in play."

 

The five hits were two more than Harrison's previous single-game high, set twice as an 18-year-old in the Rookie-level Arizona League last summer. This season, the Brewers gave the Missouri native an aggressive Opening Day assignment to Class A Wisconsin, where he batted .148 in 46 games against older competition. Harrison is resetting himself in the Pioneer League.

 

"I grew up with older brothers and always competed on their level," he said of his Midwest League experience. "I was always told growing up don't let nothing stop you. Age doesn't mean anything to me. Talent level, that's a whole different thing, but I feel like I have a different approach to it now. I have a routine, and when all goes bad, I know where to go to have at least some type of calm."

 

While Harrison put Helena ahead for good, Medina cracked his third homer of the night to right field with one out in the bottom of the 14th to match the single-game Pioneer League record. The feat was last accomplished by Ogden's Justin Chigbogu on July 18, 2014.

 

"He's been pretty good since extended spring [training]," Cabrera said. "He's more calm at the plate and, like I said, his pitch selection is way better. That's the whole key for him.

 

"Pitchers were behind in the count. With better pitch selection, he's getting ahead in the count and making pitchers fall behind. That's when he's getting into fastball counts and putting good swings on the ball."

 

The teams combined for 31 hits, but the Brewers made theirs count in big spots -- Helena was 7-for-22 with runners in scoring position, while Billings went 2-for-15.
