Brice, 10-run third inning doom Shuckers in 12-1 loss to Suns

Biloxi ends season-series by taking 11 of 15 from Jacksonville

Biloxi Shuckers

Brooks Hall suffered his first loss in June on Monday in the series finale at Jacksonville (Jason Clark)

JACKSONVILLE, FL - Jacksonville starter Austin Brice tossed eight shutout innings on one hit and struck out 13 Biloxi batters while the Suns' offense plated 10 runs in the third en route to a 12-1 win over the Shuckers Monday at Bragan Field. The Shuckers set season highs in strikeouts in a game at the plate with 13, surrendered their most runs allowed in a game and suffered their worst defeat of the season. This coming a day after beating the Suns 11-1 on Sunday and setting a season-high with a 10-run margin of victory. Despite the loss, Biloxi still dominated the season series against Jacksonville, taking 11 of the 15 meetings in 2015.

Biloxi starter Brooks Hall (7-4) allowed one run in the first on a sacrifice fly by Matt Juengel and worked a perfect second before the wheels came off in the third. The righty gave up six-consecutive singles and a walk to bring in four runs before being relieved by Trevor Seidenberger (3 IP, 4 R, 3 H, 2 BB, 4 SO). The lefty reliever forced in a run with a walk to Zack Cox before recording the first out of the inning on a strikeout to Chadd Krist. Jacksonville (2-3) would go on to tally 10 runs on seven hits in the frame, the most given up by Biloxi pitching in any inning this season.

The Shuckers' starter ended up yielding eight runs on seven hits and two walks in matching his shortest outing of the season, which happened against the Suns on May 17. The Anderson, South Carolina native has allowed 16 runs in 10 innings against Jacksonville this season.

Martin Viramontes (0.2 IP, H) came on to take the sixth for Biloxi (3-2), but had to leave due to an apparent lower-body injury after allowing two base runners and recording two outs. Manny Barreda (2.1 IP, 2 H, 3 SO) relieved the 25-year-old and retired Cox on a pop out.

Brice (3-6) struck out Nathan Orf (0x3, BB) to start the game and allowed a hit to the second batter he faced in Josh Fellhauer (1x3, BB), but cruised through his eight innings of work, setting down 20-consecutive Shuckers after the single - 12 via strikeout. Taylor Green (0x2, BB) broke the stretch with a one-out walk in the eighth. In total, Brice retired 24 of 26 batters faced and set a career-high with 13 strikeouts.

Biloxi broke up the shutout against reliever Craig Stem in the ninth when a passed-ball third strike to Orlando Arcia (0x4) brought in Adam Weisenburger (0x0, R, BB).

Arcia's hitless performance ended his seven-game hitting streak and his four strikeouts tied him for the most strikeouts in a game with Nick Ramirez (0x4) at four.

Biloxi will have an off day on Tuesday before returning home to take on their Magnolia state rival, the Mississippi Braves, for a three-game set at MGM Park. RHP Tyler Wagner (6-2, 2.44) will take the mound for the Shuckers in game one, while the Braves will counter with RHP Greg Ross (2-7, 6.20). First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:55 a.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Fans can also listen to the game using the TuneIn Radio app or by going to http://www.biloxishuckers.com.

Biloxi Box Score

Not much positive to say about this one. Josh Fellhauer singled in the first inning and that was the only hit of the game for the Shuckers. Fellhauer was promptly thrown out trying to steal second base. Orlando Arcia, proving everyone has an off day, was 0-for-4 with four punchouts. As a team Biloxi struck out 13 times including two each from Tyrone Taylor, Victor Roache and Nick Ramirez.

From earlier today in the Transaction thread:

Matt Eddy mentions that catcher Dustin Houle (post Tommy-John) has been activated (and removed, but in what order) from the disabled list, but MiLB.com still shows him as "inactive" and not formally on any Brewers roster.

Houle made his debut tonight behind the plate for Maryvale, catching his fellow rehabber, LHP Jarret Martin.

Following up Martin was newcomer and former Diamondback farmhand RHP Derek Eitel, making his Brewers pro debut, also in a rehab stint (no specifics on that injury).

Redbirds Truly Walk-Off In 1-0 Sox Loss

Goforth's Bases-Loaded Free Pass to Williams Gives Memphis Series-Clinching Win

By Ed Pearsall / Colorado Springs Sky Sox

Tyler Cravy tossed 7.2 innings of shutout baseball, striking out four Redbirds in the Sox eventual 1-0 loss on Monday. (File Photo from prior game by Paat Kelly)

2,985 fans were treated to another pitchers' duel on Monday in the Redbirds' 1-0 win over the Sky Sox at AutoZone Park in Memphis.

A day after Memphis carried just a 2-0 lead into the ninth, the Sky Sox and Redbirds would battle through eight and a half scoreless frames before the decisive bottom of the ninth in the series finale.

Tyler Cravy turned in one of his best performances of the season, tossing 7.2 innings of shutout baseball. The Sox ace allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out four Redbirds in an outing that should have earned him his eighth win.

Unfortunately for Cravy and Colorado Springs, Memphis righty Zach Petrick was equally impressive. Petrick shut down the Sox offense over eight innings, allowing just four hits while striking out two.

Having cruised through seven frames with just one hit against him, Cravy took the mound to start the eighth. He would give up two singles and record two out in the inning before being pulled in favor of lefty Michael Kirkman with the dangerous Dan Johnson coming to the plate in the scoreless ballgame. Kirkman induced a groundout by Johnson to end the eighth inning threat, sending the nail-biter to the ninth.

Sam Tuivailala (3-0, 1.95) took over in the top of the ninth to keep the Sox off the board and give the home team a shot at a second consecutive walk-off win. The flame-throwing reliever gave up two singles in the ninth to make things interesting but would ultimately work out of trouble to keep the Sox off the board, sending the game to the last of the ninth.

David Goforth (0-3, 2.93) came in to face the heart of the Redbirds order in hopes of achieving the same result as Tuivailala in the frame prior. Outfielder Tommy Pham led off the ninth with a base hit before advancing to third on an attempted stolen base throwing error by Robinzon Diaz. Stephen Piscotty followed with a groundout that kept Pham at third, giving the Sox confidence that they could wiggle out of the jam. Goforth intentionally walked Cody Stanley in the following at-bat to set up a potential inning-ending double play. The pitcher's best friend would not be however as Alex Mejia reached first on a fielder's choice out that saw Pham gunned down at home by Elian Herrera. Now with runners on first and second with two out, Goforth stared down Rafael Ortega in the game's most critical at-bat. Goforth's nerves got the best of him as a wild pitch put both runners in scoring position, prompting the right-hander to walk Ortega to get to Matt Williams with the bases loaded. Williams drew a walk to win the 1-0 ballgame for Memphis in surprisingly calm, walk-off fashion.

With the win, Memphis improves to 41-37 on the season and clinches the four-game set against the Sox who fall to 30-45. This is the second consecutive start in which Cravy has not earned a decision after starting the season having been charged with a win or loss in 12 straight starts.

The offense will look to pick up the slack on Tuesday as the Sky Sox travel to Nashville to begin a new four-game series with the Sounds. Tyler Thornburg (1-4, 4.76) looks to continue a string of strong Colorado Springs pitching when he faces off with Sounds lefty Brad Mills (3-7, 3.21) at First Tennessee Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM MDT (7:05 Central).

Colorado Springs Box Score

Offense -- opposite of good.

After collecting nine hits in a four-game stretch, Kyle Wren is 0-for-10 over the past two games.

Colorado Springs Game Log

T: 2:17.

The bus for Nashville got an early start. Beat them Sounds!

From that rare Biloxi drubbing--

"(Jacksonville starter Austin) Brice's game score of 92 -- a stat devised by Bill James to measure the quality of an individual start (full explanation here) -- was the highest in the domestic Minor Leagues this season. Only an April 19 start by Arturo Lopez of the Diablos Rojos del Mexico in the Mexican League (9 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 9 K) was able to match it. What's more, the gem provided a much-needed bounceback effort for the 23-year-old right-hander, who improved to 3-6 and saw his ERA plummet from 6.37 to 5.61."

Final: AZL Brewers 8, AZL Athletics 1

Maryvale Box Score

Awesome game.

We mentioned the situations of LHP Jarret Martin, RHP Derek Eitel, and C Dustin Houle earlier in this thread.

Respect to 19-year-old 15th round catcher Zach Taylor (who DH'd here and collected his first two pro hits and drove in four runs), LF Juan Ortiz, who had three base knocks including a double, and third baseman Jonathan Oquendo, who had four hits, including two doubles, and drove in two, lifting his average by 129 points in one night (yes, it's early).

But we all know what you're thinking - how did SS Gilbert Lara do? Well, he was 3-for-5 as well (three singles), thank you very much (now 15-for-33, .455, 13 singles, two triples, two walks, five K's).

Maryvale Game Log

Recently-turned 18-year-old 3rd round RHP Nash Walters' 2nd pro outing was sweet -- three scoreless IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K.

How about this!:

Recently-turned 22-year-old 27th round Oklahoma State RHP Jon Perrin started his pro career with a no-hitter, effectively: over three outings, 9 IP, 0 H, 2 BB, 8 K.

Perrin was asked to complete this game with a 4th inning and was finally touched up, just a bit --

AZL Athletics Bottom of the 9th

Eric Marinez singles on a ground ball to first baseman Jorge Quiterio.

Offensive Substitution: Pinch-runner Rodolfo Penalo replaces Eric Marinez.

Seth Brown walks. Rodolfo Penalo to 2nd.

Jhonny Rodriguez grounds into a double play, shortstop Gilbert Lara to first baseman Jorge Quiterio. Rodolfo Penalo to 3rd. Seth Brown out at 2nd.

Miguel Mercedes singles on a ground ball to right fielder Nicolas Pierre. Rodolfo Penalo scores.

Nick Collins lines out to second baseman Daniel Leonardo.

That is fantastic, wonderful work. Kudos, sir. Actually, kudos to all involved in this one...

Kernels shutout Wisconsin 4-0

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/8/3/6/133720836/cuts/6_June_29_Castillo_06rxc8dl_2tomx8m6.jpg

Francisco Castillo went 2-for-4 in Monday's game against the Cedar Rapids Kernels.

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Cedar Rapids Kernels shutout the Timber Rattlers 4-0 Monday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Sam Gibbons allowed two hits over six innings for the win and Nick Gordon drove in a pair of runs for the Kernels.

The Rattlers (25-50 overall, 2-3 second half) had the best early scoring opportunity. Gibbons walked Mitch Meyer and Brandon Diaz with one out in the third inning. Gibbons got the second out on a slow roller back to the mound, but walked Elvis Rubio to load the bases. Dustin DeMuth lined out to right to end the inning.

The Kernels (43-32, 2-3) scored first. Alex Real drew a leadoff walk against Wisconsin starting pitcher Luis Ortega. Zack Larson followed with a double to left-center and Real came all the way around to score. That was the only run Ortega allowed in his four innings.

Gibbons struck out six over his six innings and got some insurance in the top of the seventh against Wisconsin reliever Angel Ventura.

Jorge Fernandez singled with one out and Rafael Valera walked. Both would move into scoring position on a wild pitch with two outs. Gordon's infield single sent Fernandez home for a 2-0 lead.

The Rattlers threatened against reliever Luke Bard in the bottom of the seventh. Bard walked Carlos Leal with one out. Alan Sharkey followed with a single. Bard got out of the inning by getting Mitch Meyer to ground into a 4-6-3 double play.

The Kernels added two more runs off Ventura in the top of the ninth. Fernandez tripled with one out and scored on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Gordon drove in his second run of the game with a single.

Wisconsin was shutout for just the fourth time this season. They are also 1-9 against the Kernels, including 0-7 at home against Cedar Rapids.

Game two of the series is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. David Burkhalter (1-4, 5.01) is the scheduled starter for the Timber Rattlers. Luke Westphal (0-0, 9.00) of Clintonville, Wisconsin is set to start for the Kernels. Game time is 12:05pm.

The first 500 fans to attend the game on Tuesday will receive a magnet featuring Timber Rattlers pitcher Kodi Medeiros presented by Lamers Bus Lines, magnet two in a series of four that are being given away this season.

Show your business card when you purchase a ticket on Tuesday and for $13.50 you will receive a box seat ticket, a beverage and your choice of brat or hot dog. The offer is also available to senior citizens (55 & older) courtesy of Baker Tilly, WVBO, and AM1280 WNAM.

Wisconsin Boxscore

I've been meaning to mention this for sometime but Francisco Castillo has proven to be an average or above average defender every where he's played this season. Speaking of of defense, Sthervin Matos unleashed an absolute accurate cannon shot to gun a runner on a chopper which hopped towards the heavens and didn't want to come down, it seemed like it hung up there forever when I was watching the play live.

This young team is still struggling to put it together, complete team efforts have been few and far between to this point in the season. Luis Ortega was better than he had been from a pitching standpoint, the run he allowed was actually on a pretty good pitch. He is however, horrible at holding baserunners. I was surprised that TV crew was admonishing Carlos Leal for stolen bases when runners were literally half way to 2nd before the pitch was thrown, there's no way Carlos (or any catcher for that matter) can overcome that kind of head start.

While Ortega had a game on the upswing, Angel Ventura was leaving balls up in the zone all over the place. He too was victimized on a pretty good pitch, but he left enough pitches belt high down the middle that no case for being "unlucky" can be made in this one. He had a wild pitch in the 9th that slipped out of his hand so badly it was both 3 feet high and wide of the batter in the RH batter's box, which of course allowed a run to score.

The Rattlers managed just 4 hits, 2 by Castillo, 1 of which was a bunt single in which he deftly avoided the tag of the 1B while staying in the box and diving for the bag at the same time. Nick Gordon did rob Brandon Diaz to start the game, it was one of the better defensive plays I've seen at any level all season.

Tucker Neuhaus has tweaked his batting stance since I saw him last... he used to have a pretty wide base, he's more traditional now with his feet slightly wider than the shoulders. The TV crew actually caught it before I did, so props to them.
