Hopefully they convinced some talented HS players who were passed because of signability to take there money over night.

Guys like OF Chad Jones or RHPs Seth Blair, Taylor Cole, or Evan Dinieli.

Yeah that's an interesting new spin with this draft schedule...they have some time to talk to a guy like Jones overnight and work out a potential deal. Some of those guys probably had their phones ringing all night long.

The shot typified LaPorta's senior season at Florida. It was one in which the slugger invoked fear in opponents. LaPorta walked 55 times this season, including 30 times intentionally. Tennessee coach Rod Delmonico intentionally walked LaPorta seven consecutive times last week.

Seven consecutive intentional walks? That's ridiculous. (But good -- he must have really been a terror in the SEC.)

Daniel Merklinger L/L

LHP, Seton Hall

Focus Area Comments

Fastball: Merklinger's fastball is well below-average.

FB Movement: He does throw a four-seam and two-seam fastball with decent action. He could have future-average life.

Curve: It could be his best pitch and projects to be an average pitch in the future.

Changeup: His changeup is below-average right now, but projects as an average offering.

Control: He's generally around the plate, but his command overall is below-average.

Poise: His overall makeup is fine.

Physical Description: Merklinger has a body type similar to Steve Kline.

Medical Update: Healthy.

Strengths: The curve has the chance to be a pretty good pitch.

Weaknesses: While he generally can throw strikes, his stuff is all below-average.

Summary: Considered one of the better pitching prospects in last year's Cape Cod League, Merklinger has been a bit disappointing in his junior year. The southpaw has been showing below-average stuff and his command hasn't been sharp enough to make up for it. Still, he's a college lefty who has shown the ability to pitch in the past. He could be a No. 5 starter or a lefty specialist, especially if his breaking stuff can continue to improve.

Brewers took another lefty pitcher in round 7. Efrain Nieves from a Puerto Rican HS. Wonder if he's related to Juan?

EDIT: They are flying through these rounds now.

Hey, there's the high school pitcher we were looking for!

EDIT: Actually, the Puerto Rican kid was from high school too.

Thanks for the scouting report on Merklinger, Homer, although I definitely wouldn't call it glowing. Sounds like that scout thinks he's got one slightly above average pitch and no control. Boy, it's good to be a lefty.

Brewers took a catcher from Ohio St in round 10.

When's the last time they took two catchers so early?

Cody Scarpetta 6'3 RHp HS

round 11

Big kid, thick. Low 90's fast ball 91-93, looks to have a curve or slurve, not much control of it viewing the footage.

120. Cody Scarpetta, rhp

School: Guilford HS, Rockford, Ill. Class: Sr.

B-T: R-R. Ht.: 6-2. Wt.: 220. Birthdate: 8/25/88.

Scouting Report: Scarpetta's father Dan was a third-round pick by the Brewers out of an Illinois high school in June 1982, and Cody could match him if a late injury doesn't hurt his stock too much. Scarpetta tore the flexor tendon in his right index finger while pitching in late April, an injury similar to the one that has sidelined the Tigers' Joel Zumaya (who tore the same tendon in his middle finger). Scarpetta had surgery in mid-May and will be out until at least July. A team that takes him with plans to evaluate him this summer may not see him at full strength before the Aug. 15 signing deadline. Scarpetta, 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds, worked hard to get in the best shape of his life during the offseason, and his efforts paid off. Before he got hurt, he showed a plus fastball every time out this spring, usually sitting around 92-94 mph. In addition to increasing his velocity, he also turned his breaking ball into a true power curveball and added a changeup. One scout compared him to John Wetteland, though Scarpetta has enough stuff to stick in a rotation. If he doesn't sign, he'll attend Creighton.

Seems like a mini Draft and follow prospect.

Umm.....

These scouting reports on body type always crack me up. Mark Rogers had a "high rear end."

jwill,

Did you post the thick comment or is that from a scout?

Anyway, thanks for posting the updates. I have to work occasionally. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

I posted the thick comments, not comparing talent, he has a Roger Clemens type body.

I am at work with nothing to do, last week before i start a new job, so i am a quasi draft guy today getting paid to be an engineer.
