Milwaukee Bucks 2015 - 2016

I'm in the camp where summer league matters if you flat out stink. I expect a lottery pick to play well again this competition but that rarely happens.

He can clearly rebound and is a shot blocker. He covers crazy ground on D. On offense I haven't seen much but if set up he can finish

If he is a younger higher motor version of Earvin Johnson, I will be happy.

I'm not sure he'll ever have the bulk to be Earvin Johnson. I think he's going to have to defend 3s and stretch 4s. If he can add a bit of muscle, he could be a terrifying slashing wing. Even scarier if his shot is somewhat consistent. I really can't think of a comp for him. He doesn't have the ball skills of Giannis, he seems to have a bit more all around game than Henson. He's not a Shawn Bradley type who will sit and wait to goaltend. He's interesting. My biggest concern for him is injury, but I feel that way about all the beanpole "stretch 4s" of this generation. Someone may actually snap Brandon Ingram in half this year.

I agree on the summer league, Boomer. I'm more concerned by struggle than excited about success.

I think the point of his success in the summer league is to try to gauge were is REALLY is currently. Boomer said that he expects a lottery pick to play well against this competition, but at the same time, people didn't think he was worthy of a lottery pick... more like a 2nd round pick. So maybe his success indicates that he was worthy of pick #10; its still early, but certainly nice to see.

I saw a highlight tape of his first game and the slams and blocked shots were nice, but the thing that impressed me was his jumper from 15 feet. He faced up with the defender, swung the ball low like he was going to drive, but immediately pulled up and shot it. Making the jumper was nice, but the interesting part was that the whole action was smooth and natural.

Certainly he will struggle with anyone at the NBA level of similar height due to his lack of bulk. No doubts about that. But it looks like they have a legit NBA player with interesting up-side. Seeing how much strength he can build up to will be a key part of his ceiling.

Ervin Johnson was 6'11" and 245lbs. So Maker would need to be around 250 for his 7'1" frame to be equivalently built. He is 216lbs right now (per his profile anyway). I don't think adding 34lbs is out of possibility over the next 3-4 years. He is 19 (I'm sticking with that) and his major growth years for muscle are just coming.

3 years of not growing and an NBA diet and workout routine can do wonders.

The closest comp would be Garnett. Obviously not predicting him to be that good or anything, just on the body type and what can be predicted in his play. Can guard 5s but swith onto everyone. Long arms for rim protection. Ability to step out and hit outside shots but primarily still a 'big'. Can handle the ball well for a big but probably shouldn't be initiating PnRs himself, he should be the screener. That would be my best comp: poor man's Garnett with maybe more rim running on PnRs due to not being as polished.
