Final: DSL Braves 7, DSL Brewers 1

DSL Brewers Box Score

22-year-old righty Wuilder Rodriguez got the start for the Brewers and pitched well, going six innings and allowing just one run, but the trouble started once the Braves got in to the Brewers bullpen. Starling Duval came on in the seventh and allowed four runs over two innings of work and suffered his first loss of the season. Yan De La Cruz pitched the ninth and was touched up for two more runs on three hits.

Not much offense to speak of for the Brewers in this one. 20-year-old catcher Bismar Nunez had the lone multi-hit game, going 2-for-4. Second baseman Franly Mallen was 1-for-4 with a double and Adolfo Morillo, Nicol Valderrey and Anderson Jesus each added a single. Third baseman Julio Mendez walked in two of his three trips to the plate and stole his third base of the season.

DSL Brewers Game Log

Three of Duval's four runs allowed were unearned, but it was his own throwing error that contributed to the eighth inning mess.

Final: Biloxi 7, Jacksonville 3

Wagner, Shuckers bounce back with 6-2 win over Suns

Tyler Wagner logs his eighth quality start and earns first win since May 12

Biloxi Shuckers

Tyler Wagner induced 13 ground ball outs en route to seven quality innings on Friday night (Ed Gardner)

JACKSONVILLE, FL - Starter Tyler Wagner hadn't won since May 12, but the Shuckers' ace tossed seven quality innings and induced 13 groundouts in a 7-3 win over the Jacksonville Suns at Bragan Field on Friday night. Orlando Arcia provided the offense with a double, triple, two runs and two RBI as every starter reached base safely. Arcia has a league-leading 26 multi-hit games this season. The series is now even at 1-1, but Biloxi leads the overall season-series 9-3 over Jacksonville.

Biloxi (1-1) jumped out on top first with a two-run first inning after Josh Fellhauer (1x3, RBI, R, BB) drew a one-out walk and Arcia (2x5, 2 RBI, 2 R, 2B, 3B) tripled him home for a quick 1-0 lead. Arcia would score on a wild pitch to Michael Reed (1x4, RBI, BB) to put the Shuckers up two.

Jacksonville (0-1) tied things up in the second on a botched double play. Sharif Othman came up with the bases loaded and one out and bounced a grounder to second baseman Nathan Orf (1x4, RBI, R, BB), who flipped to Arcia for the first out, but an errant throw to first by the Shuckers' shortstop allowed a second run to score on the play.

Arcia redeemed himself in the fourth with a RBI double as part of a three-run outburst to give the Shuckers a 5-2 lead, in which they never looked back.

Taylor Green (1x3, R, 2 BB), Adam Weisenburger (0x4, R) and Tyler Wagner (1x4, R) reached safely to start the frame and load the bases for Orf, who drew a walk to force in Green and put Biloxi back on top and force Suns' starter Scott Lyman (0-2) from the game. A sacrifice fly by Fellhauer gave the Shuckers a two-run advantage before Arcia's RBI double to complete the scoring in the fourth, giving Biloxi a 5-2 edge. Green extended his hitting streak to six games with a two-out single in the ninth.

Biloxi padded onto its lead in the sixth with two unearned runs on a RBI single by Reed and a sacrifice fly by Nick Ramirez (1x3, RBI, 2B, BB) to take a commanding 7-2 lead.

Wagner (6-2, 7 IP, 3 R, - 2 ER - 6 H, BB, 5 SO) was locked in after the two-run second, allowing just one run in his final five innings and retiring 15 of the final 19 batters he faced en route to his eighth quality start of the season. Mike Strong (IP, BB) and Jacob Barnes (IP, SO) worked the final two frames to seal the Shuckers' victory.

Biloxi will look to jump ahead in the five-game series with All-Star RHP Jorge Lopez (5-2, 3.02) going against big-league rehabber RHP Jose Fernandez (0-0, 0.00) Fernandez was the 2013 NL Rookie of the Year and underwent Tommy John surgery in 2014. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m., with coverage beginning at 5:50 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Fans can also listen to the game using the TuneIn Radio app or by going to http://www.biloxishuckers.com.

Biloxi Box Score

Orlando Arcia appears to be heating up again. He's hit safely in five straight and had a pair of extra-base hits tonight with a double and a triple. Nick Ramirez doubled, walked and had a sacrifice fly. Taylor Green reached base three times with a single and a pair of walks and Josh Fellhauer singled, walked and stole a base.

Tyler Wagner turned in another quality start, going seven innings and allowing just two earned runs. He struck out five and also picked up a base hit. Mike Strong and Jacob Barnes each worked a scoreless frame.

Arcia committed an error but it was just his eighth of the season. That's still one less than first baseman Nick Ramirez who committed his ninth.

Biloxi Game Log

Wagner could have had a second hit in this game but was a victim of the rare 9-3 putout.

Biloxi Top of the 2nd

Taylor Green walks.

Adam Weisenburger flies out to right fielder Carlos Lopez.

Tyler Wagner grounds out, right fielder Carlos Lopez to first baseman Viosergy Rosa. Taylor Green to 2nd.

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Clinton LumberKings were up 4-2 over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers heading into the sixth inning on Friday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. In the sixth, the LumberKings sent thirteen batters to the plate and scored nine runs to pull away for a 13-2 victory.

Clinton (27-44 overall, 1-1 second half) took the lead in the top of the first inning. Arby Fields, the leadoff batter for the LumberKings the third pitch of the game over the wall in left for a homer and a 1-0 lead.

The LumberKings loaded the bases with one out against Wisconsin starting pitcher Zach Hirsch in the second inning. Chris Mariscal unloaded the bases with a three-run triple and Clinton was up 4-0. The LumberKings loaded the bases again in the inning, but Hirsch escaped without more damage.

Wisconsin (24-48, 1-1) got to within two runs in the bottom of the second. They would load the bases on Clinton starter Tyler Herb with one out on a walk to Tucker Neuhaus and singles by Alan Sharkey and Mitch Meyer. Gregory Munoz plated Neuhaus with a sacrifice fly. Dustin DeMuth made the score 4-2 with a two-out RBI single to knock in Sharkey.

Hirsch pitched scoreless innings in the third and fourth, but left after four with over ninety pitches. Josh Uhen relieved Hirsch to start the fifth and retired the LumberKings in order with a pair of strikeouts.

Herb kept the Rattlers from threatening after the second as a one-out single to Greg McCall in the third was the only hit he allowed over his final four innings.

Gianfranco Wawoe started the top of the sixth inning by reaching first on a hit batter. Fields followed with a bunt single and Mariscal moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Pat Leyland got Wawoe home with a single for a 5-2 lead. Leyland would finish the game 5-for-6.

Taylor Zeutenhorst was next and he knocked in Fields with a single. Uhen walked the next batter to load the bases and hit Joe DeCarlo to force in a run for a 7-2 Clinton advantage.

Uhen got the second out on a strikeout, but could not find the third out. James Alfonso singled to knock in two runs. Wawoe, in his second plate appearance of the inning, singled to reload the bases. Fields drew a walk to force in another run and knock Uhen out of the game.

Mariscal greeted reliever Gian Rizzo by lining the first pitch he saw to the gap in right-center. All three runners on base crossed home plate and Mariscal wound up on third with a triple. He went 4-for-4 with six RBI in the game.

Neither team threatened after the sixth.

Meyer walked twice in the game and also singled in the ninth for Wisconsin's first hit since the single by McCall in the third. Meyer ended the game with two of Wisconsin's six hits.

Game three of the series is scheduled for Saturday night. Devin Williams (2-4, 3.62) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Clinton has named Pat Peterson (4-4, 4.04) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 6:35pm.

The MegaBrain returns to the Fox Cities on Saturday night. Neuroscience Group is bringing back the MegaBrain as part of Strike Out Stroke. Take a tour through the center of the mind before heading into the ballpark on Saturday. The Timber Rattlers will also be awarding one lucky fan four tickets to the August 25th One Direction concert at Miller Park. Stick around after the game for a great FOX 11 Fireworks display on a Festival Foods Saturday.

If you can't make it out to the ballpark, there are several ways to follow the action. MyNEW32'sSports Showdown will televise the game starting at 6:30pm. The radio broadcast is on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:15. The broadcast may also be heard on Tune In Radio and IHeartRadio. Subscribers to MiLB.TV can see the game that way.

Wisconsin Boxscore

I admit that I turned this one off during Josh Uhen's 6th after Gian Rizzo didn't do him any favors. Zach Hirsch wasn't very sharp either leaving his FB up in the zone, he was hit pretty hard early and Clinton stayed on the gas until finishing the 9 run 6th.

At least Mitch Meyer (2-2, 2BB) had a nice game.

Manatees Show Resolve In 9-5Win

5-run 7th inning earns Manatees 1st 2nd half victory

By Jerry Durney / Brevard County Manatees

Taylor Brennan, seen here, hit the go-ahead double in the 7th inning of the Manatees 9-5 win Friday night (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

Viera, FL- The Brevard County Manatees (1-0, 30-40 overall) got their second half of the season off on the right foot Friday night coming back multiple times in a 9-5 victory over the Daytona Tortugas (0-1, 37-34 overall).

After the start of the game was delayed for one hour and 24 minutes due to wet field conditions, the Tortugas jumped out to a quick lead against Manatees starting pitcher Javi Salas in the top of the first. Phillip Ervin and Alex Blandino each singled to start the game. After Robert Ramirez flew out, Chad Wallach hit a potential double play ball towards the third but Taylor Brennan misplayed it to load the bases for Taylor Sparks. Sparks promptly ripped a base hit down the right field line to score Ervin and Blandino to put the 'Tugas in front. Salas recovered to retire Jeff Gelalich and Jon Matthews.

Daytona continued to tack on the top of the third as Ramirez worked a one-out walk after being down 0-2 in the count. After Wallach struck out, Sparks would inflict damage once again, this time with a double to left, bringing Ramirez all the way around to make it 3-0.

The 'Tees would mount their first comeback of the night in the bottom of the inning. Omar Garcia lit the fuse with a bunt up the first base line that Tortugas starting pitcher Nick Routt could not field in time. Chris McFarland then followed with a flare to left that fell just out of the reach of a sliding Blandino. Following a walk to Michael Ratterree, the bases were loaded for Clint Coulter, who brought home the first Manatee run with a bloop to left of his own as the Manatees played it station to station. Garrett Cooper then laced a base hit to right to score McFarland. After Brennan struck out, Cameron Garfield came to the plate looking to keep the rally going. He would hit a ball back up the middle that Blandino snared on a sliding backhand but with the runners going on a full count with two outs, both Ratterree and Coulter scored to give the Manatees the lead. The inning came to close shortly after that as Jose Pena popped out to first.

That lead would hold until the top of the sixth as the always dangerous Tortuga lineup came to life with the some help from the Manatees. Chad Wallach reached on a rare four-pitch walk by Salas and then moved up to second on a single by Sparks. However, with Gelalich at the plate, Wallach moved just a little too far off of second base and Garfield's snap throw to McFarland got him, the second straight inning where Garfield had picked off a runner. That sparkling play would be only a temporary relief as Salas walked Gelalich. Tyler Spurlin would come on in relief and immediately coaxed a would-be double play ball from Jon Matthews towards the second base bag but instead went through the legs of McFarland and into center field, bringing in Sparks to tie the game. Carlton Daal followed with a single to center that Garcia overran, scoring Gelalich and moving Matthews to third. Spurlin would keep the deficit there as Julio Morillo's grounder to first allowed Cooper to throw home and get Matthews, followed by a groundout to third by Ervin.

The deciding moment in the game would come in the bottom of the seventh as new Tortugas reliever El'Hajj Muhammad walked McFarland, Ratterree and Coulter to start the inning. Cooper would draw Brevard County level once again with a base hit to right. 'Tugas manager Eli Marrero then called on normally reliable left-hander Joel Bender to try to stop the bleeding but Brennan immediately greeted him with a double to right center, scoring Ratterree and Coulter to break the tie. After Garfield struck out, Pena doubled to the wall in left center to plate Cooper and Brennan to cap a five-run rally and put the Manatees in front for good.

Spurlin got an around the horn double play to erase a one-out single by Daal in the eighth and Preston Gainey recorded a perfect ninth inning.

In his first start since appearing in the Florida State League All-Star Game last Saturday, Salas gave up five runs, four of them earned, on six hits while striking out two and walking three in five and one-third innings of work. Offensively, Coulter and Cooper each logged multi-hit games while Brennan, Cooper, Garfield and Pena had multi-RBI games.

The Manatees begin a seven-game road trip on Saturday in Bradenton against the Marauders. RHP Johnny Hellweg (0-1, 8.59 ERA) gets the start in game one of the four-game series against RHP Tyler Eppler (0-1, 6.43 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 P.M.

Brevard County Box Score

The Tortugas are coming off a horrendous fold to end the first half of the season. They had a 5 game lead with 6 to play and ended up in a tie with Clearwater after losing their last 7, including a first half ending 4 game sweep by the Northern division champion Clearwater. Clearwater won on head-to-head wins. Routt is a new starter for the Tortugas, taking over for the promoted former Brewer, Barrett Astin. Neither team was sharp in this game.

From Matt Eddy's Baseball America Prospect Hot Sheet Chat --

Bob (WI): Clint Coulter has shown good power production in the tough FSL. Do you think he's a candidate for a second half promotion and maybe a bit more production in a more neutral hitting environment?

Matt Eddy: Brewers RF Clint Coulter is definitely an under-the-radar hitting prospect who does some great things at the plate, like manage the strike zone, make good contact for a power hitter and, well, hit for power. The last of those attributes is being hampered by the Florida State League and by pitcher-friendly Brevard County, but when you look at Coulter’s .200 ISO this season, just keep in mind that the FSL average is below .100!

NOTE: Isolated Power or ISO is a sabermetrics baseball statistic which aims to measure a batter's raw power. The formula is slugging percentage minus batting average. The final result measures how many extra bases a player averages per at bat.

Sox Offense Shutout In 9-0 Loss To Redbirds

Memphis Lefty Greenwood Stumps Colorado Springs With 8.1 Scoreless Frames

By Ed Pearsall / Colorado Springs Sky Sox

Josh Roenicke settled down after a rough first to give the Sox a quality start in Friday night's 9-0 loss to Memphis. (File Photo from prior game by Paat Kelly)

The Sky Sox had few answers for the Memphis Redbirds on Friday night as they fell 9-0 in a one-sided contest before a crowd of 3,852 at AutoZone Park.

The Redbirds jumped out to a fast 3-0 lead against Colorado Springs starter Josh Roenicke (4-4, 5.00) after one inning of play. Dean Anna led off the home first with a single before moving to second on a Roenicke wild pitch. Top prospect Stephen Piscotty drove Anna home with an RBI double in the following at-bat to give the home squad a 1-0 advantage. Dan Johnson drew a walk to give the Redbirds two runners on base without an out. Roenicke would benefit from his own pickoff of Piscotty at third base for the frame's first out. The right-hander couldn't escape further damage however, giving up a two-run home run to Redbirds third baseman Jacob Wilson to cap the first inning scoring at three.

Roenicke would not allow another run in his quality start for the Sox, tossing six total innings of three-run ball on six hits and a walk while striking out six.

Redbirds lefty Nick Greenwood (6-2, 5.93) proved to be just a bit better this evening as he twirled 8.1 shutout innings, allowing just four hits and a walk while striking out four Sox batters along the way. Matt Clark collected the Colorado Springs lineup's lone multi-hit game with two singles off of Greenwood in the ballgame.

Sox pitching kept Memphis off the board until reliever Wirfin Obispo struggled to record important outs in a five-run Redbirds seventh. The right-hander gave up four hits, a walk and a big two-run home run to centerfielder Tommy Pham in the inning en route to allowing five earned runs. Memphis would take an 8-0 lead after seven.

The Redbirds collected their ninth and final run in the home eighth against righty Rob Wooten. The run was unearned thanks to a throwing error by the normally sure-handed Yadiel Rivera.

Greenwood recorded one out in the ninth before loading the bases, prompting a Redbirds pitching change. Reliever Marcus Hatley came in to nail down the 9-0 win after recording two quick outs to end the ballgame.

The Sky Sox fall to 29-43 on the season with the loss as Memphis improves to 39-36.

The Sky Sox will look to end this current mini two-game skid on Saturday evening as they take on these same Redbirds in the second of a four-game set. Making his second start for the Sox, Hiram Burgos (0-0, 4.50) leads the way against Memphis lefty John Gast (4-4, 4.31) with first pitch set for 5:05 PM MDT (6:05 Central) at AutoZone Park.

Helena Brewers

The Great Falls Voyagers (5-3) won an 11-10 nail-biter on Friday over the Helena Brewers (3-6) in walk-off fashion at Centene Stadium.

The Voyagers would lead 10-1 at one point in the ballgame before squandering their nine-run lead.

Helena took an early lead scoring a run in the top of the third. Luis Aviles led off with a single and scored on an RBI single from Troy Stokes. Stokes went 2-for-5 for yet another multi-hit performance.

Cody Ponce made his pro debut for Helena, pitching the first two innings and retiring all six men he saw. He would add two strikeouts to his outing.

The Voyagers responded with 10 straight runs following a 1-0 deficit, scoring four runs in the fourth on three hits and five runs in the fifth. Louis Silverio blasted a three-run homer as a part of his three-hit night. It was his second home run of the year.

Jake Drossner and David Carver were both beat up in relief for Helena, combining to give up 10 runs on 11 hits in their five innings of relief.

The Brewers would mount a furious comeback starting in the seventh, scoring nine runs over the next three innings.

Carlos Belonis collected an RBI triple in the seventh for his second hit of the night. He would go 2-for-4.

Trailing 10-9 in the top of the ninth, Steven Karkenny completed the comeback with a solo home run off of Mike Gomez (1-0). Gomez would blow the save but pick up the win.

Zach Fish sent the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the ninth out of the park for a walk-off homer off of Bubba Blau (0-3). Despite an otherwise solid outing, Blau was handed his third loss in as many appearances.

The Brewers' Blake Allemand extended his hitting streak to nine games while Avilles extended his hitting to streak to seven games.

An alumni congratulations --

RHP Mike Schaub was the rare very late-round Brewer draft pick that signed directly out of high school (38th round, 2010).

Think Michael Blazek, a 35th round Cardinals high school signing...

Released after his third pro season (Helena 2012), Schaub did not pitch at all in 2013, but re-surfaced with the independent Rockford (IL) Aviators of the Frontier League in 2014, and started 2015 there as well.

Recently turning 23, Schaub was purchased from the indy league team by the New York Yankees on Friday.

Good for him, love stories like that...
