An important night for the Manatees and Timber Rattlers as the second half standings start fresh today (the Shuckers too, although they are playing for at best an extra opening-round home game in the playoffs for which they have already qualified).

The standings links above will bring you directly to the second-half standings, although it is easy to navigate to the first-half or overall standings from there.

Sky Sox manager Rick Sweet changes view of his one-time idol, Pete Rose

By David Ramsey, Colorado Springs Gazette

As a young man growing up in Longview, Wash., Sky Sox manager Rick Sweet modeled his baseball game after Pete Rose.

He ran to first base on walks, just like Pete. He played with every last speck of his energy, just like Pete.

"He was somebody I thought very highly of," Sweet said. "He was one of my idols. When I was in school, I wanted to be like Pete Rose."

He sighed.

"But," Sweet said before taking a long pause.

He's changed his view of his baseball hero.

Sweet has read new reports that Rose bet on the Reds when he was playing and managing the team. Sweet now believes Rose does not belong in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

"For years, it's been hammered into our heads," Sweet said. "You do not bet on baseball. You do not do that. The biggest rule is you can't gamble on our sport, and he did. I can't put it any other way. He did the biggest sin.

"It's a shame, but you just can't do that, and we all know it."

On Monday, ESPN reported notebooks seized from Michael Bertolini, an underworld figure, revealed Rose had bet on the Reds, and other teams while he was player/manager. The notebooks had been taken from Bertolini's home during a raid by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service in 1989 in a mail fraud probe.

Rose insisted as late as April he had never bet on the Reds during his playing career.

Orr set to step up for Canada’s Pan Am baseball squad

Includes this quote:

For the Pan Am Games, participating countries are restricted to players not on major league 40-man rosters.

“I talked it over with the Brewers,” said the Newmarket resident, who is in his second season as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers organization and 16th in professional baseball. “They’re not having an ideal season and a lot of younger guys will be going up to the majors ahead of me. Other guys are in the opposite situation where they’re an ankle injury from being called up. It was pretty safe all along that I’d be available.”

Nashville Sounds Broadcaster Blog: "PARRA IS PERFECT! PARRA IS PERFECT!"

A great memory yet somewhat sad because we all know how that turned out, I'm not sure I'll ever get over the Parra heartbreak. He's the reason I refuse to deal in absolutes when discussing pitching prospects anymore, no matter how "sure" I am of a guy. He's been a decent reliever for the Reds but still... I was so looking forward to a homegrown 1-2 punch of Gallardo and Parra.

edit. I had the Parra is Perfect!! MP3 on one of my external hard drives until last year, it ended up in one of my football season highlight directories. As I was consolidating to network storage for all that stuff that was one of the files which got axed, every season was about 15 gig worth of video, pictures, and audio by the time I was done with each season so anything I didn't need I whacked. I also found a bunch of those old audio captures of the pre-game audio interviews which I used to post... memory lane.

Any word on when Trent Clark is expected back? Doesn't look like they have put him on DL?

About two weeks (concussion); because the roster limits at the rookie level are so large (35), injuries (especially short-term injuries), rarely assign formal DL stints, because teams don't "need" roster space. Opening the season often an exception.

The beauty of Rookieball is that everyone by and large is still young enough to hope when looking up and down the lineup card. Let's see some in game power out of Gatewood and Denson tonight.

The Brewers put up two runs in the top of the eighth to go from a 4-3 deficit to a 5-4 lead, but the lead didn't last long as they gave those runs right back in the bottom of the inning and lost 6-5 to fall to a record of 8-14 on the season.

OF Marcos Pinero, the 19-year-old rookie DSL Venezuelan who exited the game after his very first pro AB (and hit) back on June 1st, missed three weeks, returning on the 22nd. He's 0-for-11 in the three games he's played since his return. The rest of the DSL roster that started the season all seem to be seeing action now.

Former Point Loma standouts selected in MLB draft

Scott Hopkins, sdnews.com (San Diego)

Two former Point Loma High School baseball players realized their dreams when they were selected by professional teams in the recent Major League Baseball amateur draft.

Campbell Wear (class of 2011) and Connor Baits (class of 2012) chose to attend University of California Santa Barbara, a decision that paid off.

Posted earlier today in the Transactions thread --

From Monday's Link Report --

Please check out the box score and you'll see that all six Brewer pitchers that preceded Lucroy were making their professional debuts (18th round Florida HS pick Gentry Fortuno, 24th round Ole Miss LHP Christian Trent, undrafted LHP Brad Kuntz, 21st round NC State RHP Jon Olczak, 35th round University of Hawaii LHP Quintin Torres-Costa, and undrafted RHP Alex Farina), and each fared well enough, as you could gather from the final score.

Brewers announce that southpaw Christian Trent escapes the heat and joins the Helena Crew.

So Christian Trent lands in Missoula from Phoenix at 4:45 local time. Not even able to be issued his own uniform yet, he's the first choice out of the bullpen to enter in the Helena 7th even though RHP Junior Rincon was also warming up and available, and Helena starters have been pitching unusually deep into games.

Naturally, Trent surrenders five runs in his first inning of work, Helena now trailing 8-5 after seven.

Reid Nichols, Scott Martens, etc. -- whose great idea was this? Where's the communication or plan? How do they feel after a travel day like that? Good way to keep a pitcher healthy?

Brilliant, just brilliant...

Josh Fellhauer extended his hitting streak to six games with an eighth inning homer Thursday (Cristina Coca)

JACKSONVILLE, FL – The Shuckers dropped the second-half opener against the Jacksonville Suns, 6-2, at Bragan Field on Thursday night. The loss dropped the Shuckers to 3-10 on Thursday’s this season and puts them out of first place in the current standings for the first time since May 11 (45 days). The Shuckers fall to 0-1 in the second half.

Biloxi (0-1) claimed a 1-0 lead in the fourth after Tyrone Taylor (0x3, R, BB) led off the frame with a walk and advanced to second on a single by Orlando Arcia (2x4). Michael Reed (0x2, RBI) followed with a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in Taylor. Arcia collected Biloxi’s lone multi-hit affair, which was his league-leading 24th of the season.

Brent Suter (4-3, 5 IP, 2 R, 8 H, BB, SO) carried a 16.1 scoreless-inning streak into Thursday’s contest and took it into the fourth, but a leadoff double and a one-out triple snapped the streak at 19.2 innings, knotting the game at one apiece.

Jacksonville (1-0) took the lead in the fifth after Chadd Krist started the inning with a walk and made it to second on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Tomshaw. Kenny Wilson drove the runner home with a single to center to give the Suns a 2-1 advantage.

Trevor Seidenberger (0.2 IP, 3 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 2 SO) took over on the mound for the Shuckers to start the sixth inning, but allowed three runs and picked up only two outs before giving way to Martin Viramontes (1.1 IP, R, 2 H, 2 BB) with Biloxi in a 5-1 hole. Shuckers’ pitching faced nine men, issued three walks and two hits with the big blow coming from Terrence Dayleg’s three-run shot to left for his first home run of the season.

Josh Fellhauer (1x1, HR, RBI) extended his hitting streak to six games in the eighth inning with his first home run of the season to bring the Shuckers within four. Jacksonville starter Matt Tomshaw (3-4) collected the win, tossing seven innings on Thursday, giving up just one run on three hits. It was the Jacksonville native’s first win in three chances (1-2) against the Shuckers this season.

Biloxi will look to even the series on Friday night when RHP Tyler Wagner (5-2, 2.43) will battle against RHP Scott Lyman (0-1, 7.36). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m., with coverage beginning at 5:50 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Fans can also listen to the game using the TuneIn Radio app or by going to http://www.biloxishuckers.com.

Biloxi Box Score

Orlando Arcia collected half of the Shuckers hits, going 2-for-4. Beyond that there was Josh Fellhauer's home run and a base hit by Brent Suter and that was the extent of the offense. Victor Roache picked up an outfield assist, nabbing a runner trying to go first to third on a single to left.

Rattlers take second half opener 4-2 over Clinton

Alan Sharkey drove in three runs for the Timber Rattlers on Thursday night in their 4-2 win over the Clinton LumberKings. (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers/Ann Mollica)

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Alan Sharkey knocked in three runs to provide the offensive support Wisconsin Timber Rattlers pitching needed in a 4-2 win over the Clinton LumberKings Thursday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The game was the second half opener for both teams.

Sharkey put the Timber Rattlers (24-47 overall, 1-0 second half) in front with a two-run triple in the bottom of the second inning.

Dustin DeMuth singled to start the Wisconsin third inning. He took second on a passed ball and third when Francisco Castillo was successful on a sacrifice bunt. DeMuth raced home on a wild pitch by Clinton starting pitcher Zack Littell for a 3-0 lead.

Littell struck out eight over seven innings and retired the final eight batters he faced in the game.

Wisconsin starting pitcher Kodi Medeiros carried the three-run lead into the sixth, but stumbled with one out against the LumberKings (26-44, 0-1). Medeiros walked Chantz Mack, allowed a single to Estarlyn Morales, and walked Joe DeCarlo to load the bases. Scott Lieser was called out of the bullpen to relieve Medeiros.

Lieser walked Kristian Brito to force in a run. Pat Leyland was next and his liner to left was headed for the wall. But, Mitch Meyer made a leaping catch at the barrier to rob Leyland of extra bases. Morales tagged and scored on the play to cut the Wisconsin lead to one run. Lieser struck out Martin Peguero to end the inning.

Medeiros was charged with both runs, allowed five hits, walked three, and struck out five over 5-1/3 innings. But, he was in line for his fourth straight win.

Wisconsin tacked on a run in the bottom of the eighth against reliever Nick Kiel. Sthervin Matos drew a walk and stole second base. Sharkey dropped a bloop single into left-center to drive in Matos for a 4-2 lead.

David Burkhalter, who entered the game to start the top of the seventh inning, pitched three scoreless innings and struck out four to earn his fourth save of the season.

Thursday's contest was the first home game for the Timber Rattlers since June 8.

Game two of the series is Friday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Zach Hirsch (2-3, 2.68) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Clinton has named Tyler Herb (3-4, 5.03) as their starter. Game time is 7:05pm.

Friday is a night for fairy tales to come true when you can meet a Storybook Princess during the game. There's still room for the pregame tea party, but hurry and contact the Timber Rattlers ticket office to reserve your meeting with royalty.

This is also the second straight Peanut Free Night of the homestand.

Children 14 and under may participate in Kids Run the Bases thanks to Molina Healthcare after the postgame Fireworks display on Friday's North Shore Bank/Y100 Family Night.

If you can't make it out to the ballpark, there are several ways to follow the action. MyNEW32's Sports Showdown will televise the game starting at 7:00pm. The radio broadcast is on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:45. The broadcast may also be heard on Tune In Radio and IHeartRadio. Subscribers to MiLB.TV can see the game that way.

Rattler Radio Postgame Post - June 25, 2015

Watch Mitch Meyer climb the wall for a huge out in the 6th on what looked to be Grand Slam off the bat, what an excellent defensive play.

Wisconsin Boxscore

So this is the 4th or 5th time I've gotten to watch Kodi Medeiros pitch, and while his line ultimately ended up like most of his season in that 5 inning 2 run range, this was the first game he was able to consistently work down in the zone. He missed down and to both sides, but early in the game he wasn't elevating anything except his slider. Speaking of which, for those that haven't seen him pitch he actually runs the slider into the hands of a RH batter, most lefties I've watched have run the slider into the knees. I wonder if that's a preference of Kodi's or that's where the pitch naturally carries for him right now? Regardless, just another factor which is atypical, and why wouldn't it be? Kodi threw a nice change low and away to strike out a RH batter which caught my eye.

I know I've mentioned this a couple of times but David Burkhalter continues to make progress, he's lowered his ERA to just over 5 now. David also pitched well this evening, he was locating both his FB and CB in the zone, he supposedly has a slider according to the TV broadcast, but I don't recall seeing one. In fact I don't recall seeing the change that BA mentioned in their draft report either. His curve is a slow and big sweeping 12-6 type, we'd like to see him tighten that up into a nice true hammer curve as he progresses. Brad Woodall commented on the curve and it's loose/loopy nature a couple of times, he also did a cursory breakdown of both pitcher's mechanics. I would really like to see Burkhalter get some starts, most of the better pitchers in the league are up over 70 IP already while he's at just 46.2 pitching behind Medeiros every time out.

Alan Sharkey's big day highlighted above, that last hit was within inches of being an out but it's nice to see a break go the Rattlers' way. Greg McCall (2-4,2B) also had a nice game and not only that but after years of bad catching in WI it's truly awesome to have both McCall and Leal working hard doing the little things behind the plate for this pitching staff.
