From Tuesday's Link Report:

Wet grounds in the Dominican, DSL Brewers game postponed.

The DSL scoreboard page gives no indication if this game will be completed Monday evening. The league could wait until July 14th when the teams meet again at the Brewers' academy.

If the makeup game does take place this evening, our Link Reporter Brad will clue us in.

Today's Brevard doubleheader does not count towards the second-half standings (still first-half).

The Manatees seem to never be awful in recent years, but neither are they dominant in any regard. Time to correct that, so while wins would be nice today, tomorrow's even better ;).

Final: Colorado Springs 7, Oklahoma City 6

Sky Sox Stun Dodgers With Four In Ninth

Colorado Springs Breaks Out for Three Homers in Comeback Win Over OKC

By Ed Pearsall / Colorado Springs Sky Sox

Yadiel Rivera's two-out, three-run home run in the ninth propelled the Sox to a 7-6 comeback win on Wednesday. (File Photo from prior game by Paat Kelly)

Home runs would set the tone early Tuesday afternoon as the Sky Sox used one big three-run shot to complete an impressive comeback in a 7-6 win over the Oklahoma City Dodgers before a crowd of 6,851 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

As they've done with great frequency over the last two weeks, the Sky Sox jumped out to a quick lead against OKC starter Deck McGuire thanks to the team's first long ball since June 14th in Iowa. Matt Clark would provide the thump, taking the first pitch he saw from the right-handed McGuire over the right field wall to score Kyle Wren and give the Sox a 2-0 lead after one.

Tyler Cravy would struggle in his second shortest outing of the season, giving up six runs on nine hits while striking out four over four plus innings of work. The normally reliable starter gave up a solo home run to top-prospect Corey Seager in the home first, allowing the Dodgers to cut the lead in half after one. Seager would make life a little more difficult for Cravy before all was said and done.

Nevin Ashley added a solo blast of his own in the top of the second to regain a two-run advantage for Colorado Springs. The lead would not last long however as Cravy would allow five singles and three runs to the Dodgers offense in the very next frame. Brian Ward and Darwin Barney collected RBI base knocks in the second with Darnell Sweeney picking up an RBI on a sacrifice fly.

Each team would keep their opponent off the scoreboard for the next two innings before OKC broke through against Cravy for the final time in the home fifth. Barney led off the frame with a double, bringing Seager to the plate for a prime run-producing opportunity. The shortstop took full advantage as he drilled a Cravy pay-off pitch over the right-centerfield wall to extend the Dodger lead to 6-3. The long ball chased the Sox starter as Rick Sweet elected to go to Ariel Pena out of the Colorado Springs bullpen to finish the fifth. Pena would strike out the side, not before walking the bases loaded, to keep the Sox deficit to three.

Former MLB closer Brandon League came on to relieve McGuire after five strong innings of five hit, one run ball that saw the righty strike out five along the way. League tossed two solid innings to keep Colorado Springs at bay, allowing just one hit while striking out one. Lefties Michael Kirkman and Nick Additon (3-2, 6.23) provided the Sky Sox exactly what they need over sixth, seventh and eight innings as the two combined for three scoreless frames to maintain the 6-3 score. Kirkman tallied three strikeouts in his two-inning stint.

With a scoreless frame already under his belt, OKC would send lefty David Huff (3-1, 1.88) to the mound for his second inning of work in hopes of closing out the Sky Sox in the ninth. Huff issued a free pass to Clark to lead off the ninth before getting Matt Dominguez to ground into a double play in the next at-bat. Sweet sent Robinzon Diaz to the plate to pinch-hit for Additon in hopes of providing one last spark. The catcher, in signature style lined a single to right-center to keep the Sox hopes alive. Matt Long followed with another base hit, bringing Ashley to the plate with two on and two out. Ashley would ground to short, leaving the normally sure-handed Seager to end the ballgame with an accurate throw. Seager couldn't do it as his throwing error allowed Diaz to score and Ashley to reach, giving Colorado Springs hope for a rally.

Now the ballgame rested on the shoulders of the slap-hitting Yadiel Rivera as the Sox had two on with two out in the top of the ninth, trailing 6-4. Rivera wasted no time, smacking the first pitch he saw from Huff over the left field wall for a clutch lead-taking, three-run home run.

Pete Orr followed with a single to chase Huff before reliever Juan Gonzalez induced an inning-ending groundout off the bat of Wren to stop the bleeding.

David Goforth pitched a scoreless ninth to nail down the 7-6 comeback victory over the Dodgers, helping the Sox improve to 29-41. With the loss, OKC falls to 47-24 on the season.

The Sky Sox are back at it tomorrow as they take on these same Dodgers in the rubber game of the current three-game set. Tyler Thornburg (1-4, 5.13) will look to turn in a solid performance against OKC and starter Matt Shelton (0-1, 1.80) with first pitch slated for 6:05 PM MDT at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark on Thursday.

Colorado Springs Box Score

Wow, 70 games into the Sky Sox Link Reports, and hard to think of one game that tops that. Thanks for the quick video turnaround, MiLB! Especially clutch for Robinzon Diaz, Matt Long, and of course, Yadiel Rivera, all with two outs!

Great work, bullpen!

Kyle Wren heating up, 3-for-5 in this one.

Such mixed emotions for Dodgers super-stud SS prospect Corey Seager, two bombs and then the killer error.

St. Charles North native Hirsch set to start against Cougars

by Chris Casey, Kane County Chronicle

GENEVA – Zach Hirsch wasn’t going to allow anything to inhibit him from starting against the Cougars this time around.

Hirsch, a 2009 St. Charles North graduate and member of the Milwaukee Brewers Class-A affiliate Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, will start on the mound Thursday against the Cougars at Fifth Third Bank Ball Park in Geneva.

Scheduled for seven, Manatees now scoreless in the 10th in Game One.

I just tweeted:

Complain about Colorado Springs all you want, but the stifling FSL is just as bad for proper player evaluation.

Thoughts?

May be worse, because you're talking 22-24 year olds, and not AAA vets. Heck, Ryan Braun was 22 and posted a .784 OPS in 59 games, good but check out the surrounding seasons.

Both teams just wasted leadoff doubles, so I guess situational skills are lacking tonight as well...

Gilbert Lara now 3-for-3 with a single, double, and triple (4 RBI) in a game that is only in the 5th inning. Should have a couple of opportunities to complete the cycle.

EDIT: Looks like the official scorer changed Lara's double to a single. Either way, very nice night for Lara.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

As Mass Haas mentioned, there were two Dominican games listed for today, but only one box score has been posted so far. If the other one gets updated overnight I'll get it in the morning.

Lakeland Walks-Off Against Brevard County For Second Straight Game

Flying Tigers Beat Manatees, 1-0

By Dave Walkovic / Brevard County Manatees

Lakeland, Fla. - Dominic Ficociello delivered with a walk-off for the second straight game as the Lakeland Flying Tigers (33-36) defeated the Brevard County Manatees (29-40) 1-0 in game one of Wednesday's doubleheader at Joker Marchant Stadium.

With the game tied at zero heading into the bottom of the tenth, David Gonzalez reached on a single to left field. Jiwan James then reached on a throwing error by pitcher Stephen Peterson (2-2, 2.29 ERA) who tried to get the lead runner on a bunt attempt. Raph Rhymes sacrificed the runners over the second and third. With one out, the Manatees elected to intentionally walk Javier Bentancourt. Ficociello then drove a ball to deep right field that was tracked down by Clint Coulter. Gonzalez scored on the sacrifice fly to win the game for Lakeland.

Brevard County starter Wei-Chung Wang tossed 7.2 shutout innings in a no-decision. He surrendered just four hits and two walks. Wang struck out two.

Slade Smith (1-0, 0.00 ERA) earned the win with three scoreless relief innings. He allowed just one hit.

Garrett Cooper went 2-for-4 with a double in the loss. Brevard County recorded just four hits in the game.

Brevard County Box Score Game 1

Wei-Chung Wang with a badly needed great start. Not much hitting. Garrett Cooper had half the hits including his 20th double of the season. Only 1 home run though. Really nothing against Jonathan Maciel but he's not having much of a year and the Manatees have hit him hard in previous games. Yes, in evaluating these FSL players it's probably important to compare them to other players in the league. Coulter is still near the lead in several offensive categories, for example.

Brevard County Game Log Game 1

Brevard County Box Score Game 2

Game two ends in an 8 inning tie. Nice of Garrett Cooper after I pointed out he only had one home run, gets his second in the nightcap. Taylor Brennan with two hits. Brandon Woodruff and Kaleb Earls pitched well here also.

Final: Helena 7, Missoula 4, ten innings

Gatewood hits Brewers to 7-4 win

Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (3-4) won their first extra inning contest of the season, defeating the Missoula Osprey (3-4) 7-4 in 10 innings on Wednesday night.

Marcos Diplan got the start for the Brewers, giving another excellent performance. Diplan would pitch seven innings, giving up just two runs on six hits and recording seven strikeouts. He would not receive a decision.

Helena jumped on the board first with a run in the top of the second. Jake Gatewood doubled to lead off the inning and scored on an RBI grounder from Jose Cuas. Gatewood led the Brewers offensively, going 3-for-4 with three doubles, three RBI and three runs scored. He now has four doubles on the year while with Helena (6-for-27).

The Osprey would overcome multiple two-run deficits in the game, scoring two runs in the fifth and eighth innings. Zach Hoffpauir and Joey Armstrong hit back-to-back solo homers in the fifth off of Diplan. Five of the six hits that Diplan surrendered would be for extra bases.

Tied 4-4 going to the 10th, the Brewers wasted no time taking the lead for good. Blake Allemand led off with a single off of Cody Clark (0-2). Allemand is now on a league-leading seven-game hitting streak. Gatewood collected his third double of the game later in the inning, scoring Monte Harrison and Steven Karkenny on the play.

The Brewers and Osprey will face off in the second game of their two-game series Thursday at Allegiance Field Ogren Park. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM (8:05 Central).

***

Helena Independent Record's road game summary --

After giving up a pair of late runs that sent the game into extra innings, the Helena Brewers rebounded and dealt the Missoula Osprey a 7-4 loss in the 10th inning Wednesday at Ogren Park.

Leading the way was shortstop Jake Gatewood, who finished an impressive 3 for 4 -- with all three hits going as doubles -- with three runs scored and three RBIs. Blake Allemand (2 for 5), Steven Karkenny (2 for 4) and David Denson (2 for 5) also picked up a multi-hit game for the Brewers (3-4), who earned their first road win of the season.

The game went a bit longer than they would have liked, however.

The Brewers went into the eighth tied, but pulled ahead with a pair of runs. The spurt was keyed by a lead-off single from Allemand, who now has at least one hit in every game this season.

Helena -- which also led 2-0 only to see the home team battle back -- then gave up a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth and the game was knotted up at 4. After a scoreless ninth, it went to extras.

Once there, Helena wasted no time.

Monte Harrison, on with a fielder's choice, advanced to second on a Karkenny grounder to left. Gatewood then recorded his third double of the night to drive them both home. He followed with a steal of third base and scored on a throwing error by catcher Matt Jones.

The Osprey ended the frame with back-to-back outs, but the home team went down 1-2-3 and the Brewers took the win.

Marcos Diplan was strong on the mound for Helena, going seven innings and giving up two runs -- both homers -- on six hits, walking one and striking out seven. Joshua Torres finished the final three innings, recording both a blown save and the win.

Brewers spoil Osprey home debut

By Bill Speltz, The Missoulian

Twice the Missoula Osprey fought from behind in their home debut Wednesday.

It still wasn't enough.

The Helena Brewers scored three runs in the top of the 10th inning to ruin the O's homecoming, 7-4, in front of 2,751 fans at Ogren-Allegiance Park. Missoula fell to 3-4 in the Pioneer League North Division.

"It was a tough one, just like a bounce away from going your way," said Missoula slugger Zach Hoffpauir, who had a towering home run to center field in the fifth inning. "I thought we fought pretty well. I think we're playing decent baseball but we can play better."

The top of the 10th was hard to swallow for the home team. Reliever Cody Clark fell victim to a Helena scoring surge. Blake Allemand hit a leadoff single and Steven Karkenny gave the visitors two baserunners with his one-out base hit.

That set the stage for Jake Gatewood's two-RBI double to right center field. The Brewers added one more run thanks to a Missoula throwing error and the O's went down in order in the bottom of the 10th.

Clark took the loss, falling to 0-2. He pitched the last two innings for Missoula, allowing three runs on three hits.

The Brewers looked to be in good position after breaking a 2-2 tie with two runs in the top of the eighth off reliever Aaron Sookee. The Aussie allowed an Allemand single and then issued a walk to Monte Harrison to start the inning.

Karkenny's excuse-me, check-swing base hit to right field scored Allemand from second. Helena (3-4) later scored on a sacrifice fly.

The Brewers brought on relief pitcher Joshua Torres in the bottom of the eighth and Missoula pounced. After Jeff Smith hit a leadoff single, Isan Diaz gave the hosts runners on first and second when Helena second baseman Allemand made an errant throw in trying to force Smith at second.

The runners moved up on a ground out, setting the stage for Austin Byler's clutch two-RBI single up the middle. The Nevada product moved up to second when Helena center fielder Monte Harrison bobbled the ball but Missoula's next two hitters were retired and the inning came to an end.

Helena starter Marcos Diplan, who recorded a win against the O's last week, kept the home team quiet for the first four innings. Meanwhile, his team scored a pair of runs off O's starter Anfernee Benitez and Missoula trailed 2-0 after four and a half innings.

Missoula enjoyed a power explosion in the fifth. Hoffpauir, who played baseball and football at Stanford, led off with his mammoth home run to center field. Joey Armstrong made it back-to-back home runs with a blast to left center.

"I didn't have a very good first at-bat and just was trying to have a better plan at the plate," Hoffpauir said of his breakthrough home run. "I was just blessed to have that opportunity."

Helena Box Score

Unfairly or not, we will focus on Jake Gateood and Monte Harrison in each and every Helena box score, and in this one, they came through - Gatewood added a sacrifice fly to his three doubles, and Harrison doubled and walked twice. David Denson stole his 6th career base (caught five times).

Could do without the extra-base knocks against him, but any time a Pioneer League starter gets through seven innings this early in the season, kudos RHP Marcos Diplan - so many folks made a big deal about the Braves acquiring Touki Toussaint, the D-Backs 2014 1st round RHP, didn't the Brewers do something similar in picking up the $1.3 million bonus baby Diplan as part of the Gallardo trade?

Final: Arizona Brewers 9, Arizona Padres 4

Maryvale Box Score

SS Gilbert Lara tripled and scored twice as part of a 4-for-5 night, driving in four; the triple was the A-Crew's only extra-base knock among their eleven hits; 3B Jorge Quiterio was on base three times, drawing the club's only two walks and stealing two bases (the team fanned 12 times).

When he's a major league all-star some day, 15th round catcher Zach Taylor (the DH in this game) will gather the scribes around and tell them how he netted a golden sombrero (0-for-4, four K's) in his first professional game.

Maryvale Game Log

If not for a single walk, 27th round RHP Jon Perrin of Oklahoma State would be perfect through his six professional innings over two appearances. Get this guy and his 0.17 WHIP to Helena, stat!

This was the professional debut for 3rd round Texas HS starting pitcher Nash Walters - this young man only turned 18 a month ago! Not perfect, but solid, and it's out of the way now...

With Josh Magee batting, wild pitch by Nash Walters, Benji Gonzalez to 3rd.

Josh Magee called out on strikes.

Jonas Lantigua pops out to third baseman Jorge Quiterio in foul territory.

AZL Padres Top of the 2nd
