As of this afternoon, the Manatees head into their doubleheader one player short with a 24-man roster - 13 pitchers, 11 position players (including three catchers).

 

The only players on the roster with true OF experience are the current three starters - Michael Ratterree, Omar Garcia, and Clint Coulter.

 

If Jose Pena eventually returns to Brevard from Wisconsin, that would leave a depth gap there. It's just a single position where the organization just doesn't have the numbers at this moment (health-wise or depth-wise).

As this MiLB article points out, LHP Brent Suter wasn't the only Brewer farmhand to win Pitcher of the Week for his league:

Oh look, another Harvard man winning an award. Ivy League jokes aside, Suter has pitched well enough lately to not only earn his mention here but also his first potential promotion to Triple-A ball. Following last week's pair of scoreless starts, the 25-year-old southpaw owns a 0.75 ERA in four June starts. That number balloons only slightly to 1.73 for the season. A 3.41 FIP in 2015 suggests that Suter's low ERA is a little fortunate, but overall, he's pitching like a guy who should reach the Pacific Coast League for the first time at some point this summer.

Ortega has been the Greg Maddux of the Florida State League this season. Before you say we're throwing around Hall of Fame comps with reckless abandon, consider the following. According to Manatees pitching coach Dave Chavarria, the 22-year-old right-hander hasn't reached triple-digits in pitches this season, despite throwing four complete games -- three of which have been the full nine frames. "He hasn't thrown one game this year over 100 pitches; all of his complete games have been 95 pitches or below," the coach said. "He works both sides of the plate, he's not afraid of throwing the ball in the strike zone, he's not afraid of contact. It's just the basics of pitching, and he does it very, very well." Ortega leads the FSL with a 0.82 WHIP and sits third with a 1.78 ERA. Not bad for a pitcher who was only at Rookie-level Helena last season.

Florida State League All-Star Notebook

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla.—Brevard County’s Clint Coulter had just wrapped up the second minor league all-star game appearance of his career as he enjoyed the final moments of the weekend inside the Northern Division clubhouse.

 

The 21-year-old didn’t lead his team to victory in the high Class A Florida State League exhibition, nor did he win the home run derby earlier in the night, but the fact that he was part of the all-star experience is another sign that he continues to handle the weight of expectations as one of the Brewers’ top prospects.

 

“I had a great time,” Coulter said. “There are a lot of good players in this league. It was an honor to play in it.”

 

This season has come with a twist for the 2012 first-rounder from Union High in Camas, Wash. The organizational minor league player of the year for the Brewers in 2014 has shifted from catcher last year to right field in 2015.

 

Coulter spent the offseason learning the ropes at his new position, where he has experienced growing pains with five errors and a .966 fielding average.

 

“The transition has been good,” Coulter said. “I got my feet wet and made a few mistakes early, but I feel like I’ve cleaned things up. My routes are better and I’ve learned to get my throws down when they need to be down. Those were some of the little nuances that I didn’t know about coming in.”

 

He now has a firm grasp on them is coming off a strong first half in which he led all FSL batters with 10 home runs and 111 total bases. His 26 extra-base hits ranked second, and he batted .252/.344/.444 in 66 games.

 

“It surprised me how many flamethrowers there are in this league,” Coulter said. “It’s a big step from low to high Class A.”

 

Coulter, who went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in the game, said he looks forward to continuing to improve in the second half.

 

“You just have to go into a season and continue to get better,” he said. “It’s all about development. As much as you want to win, if you are always getting better, you are winning.”

 

“My fielding has been consistent, but I want to keep plugging away at that and get better. I also want to be a more consistent hitter. If I can dominate the consistency aspect of the game, it will be huge for me.”

21-year-old Nattino Diplan started for the Brewers and turned in a pretty solid outing. He went five innings and scattered six hits, giving up just one run. He didn't walk a batter and struck out three. Former Tampa Bay Rays farmhand Yomelbin Almonte followed and really struggled, giving up five runs in only two innings. First baseman Nicol Valderrey collected three of the Brewers seven hits to raise his season average to .313. Anderson Jesus singled and doubled in four at bats and scored the Brewers lone run. Veteran catcher Sandy Martinez reached base twice as well, picking up a single and a base on balls.

Brevard County Held To Just Two Hits

Lakeland, Fla. - Brennan Smith and Julio Felix combined to toss a two-hit shutout as the Lakeland Flying Tigers (31-36) defeated the Brevard County Manatees (29-38) 6-0 in game one of Monday's doubleheader at Joker Marchant Stadium.

 

Smith (3-0, 1.74 ERA) surrendered just one hit over five shutout innings. He walked one and fanned six. The lone hit Smith surrendered was a one-out double by Taylor Brennan in the top of the fifth.

 

Lakeland opened the scoring in the bottom of the second against Johnny Hellweg. With one out, Ben Verlander drew a walk. Francisco Martinez then drilled a two-run home run to left field. It was Martinez's fifth homer of the year and gave the Flying Tigers a 2-0 lead.

 

The Flying Tigers tacked on four more runs in the third. Jiwan James led off the frame with a walk. Two batters later, Javier Bentancourt singled to put runners on first and second. Dominic Ficociello then reached on an infield single to short. Angel Ortega also committed a throwing error on the play. James scored, Bentancourt moved to third and Ficociello moved to second. Ben Verlander walked to load the bases and to end Hellweg's evening. Tristan Archer was summoned from the bullpen. The first man he faced, Martinez, drilled a bases-clearing double to make it 6-0, Lakeland.

 

Felix pitched the final two innings and allowed just one hit. He struck out two.

 

Hellweg (0-1, 8.59 ERA) was hit with the loss. He allowed six runs on three hits and three walks in 2.2 innings pitched.

Archer did not allow a run on six hits in 3.2 frames. He struck out four.

Flying Tigers Sweep Manatees in Doubleheader

Lakeland, Fla. - Dominic Ficociello delivered with a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Lakeland Flying Tigers (32-36) defeated the Brevard County Manatees (29-39) 4-3 in game two of Monday's doubleheader at Joker Marchant Stadium.

 

With the game tied at three in the seventh, Tyler Hanover hit a triple to left field against Mark Williams (0-2, 1.69 ERA) with no outs. After a pop out, Ficociello singled to right field to score Hanover and win the game.

 

The Flying Tigers originally took the lead in the bottom of the first inning against Eric Marzec. With two outs, Javier Bentancourt hit a solo home run to left field to open the scoring. It was Bentancourt's second homer of the year.

 

Brevard County responded immediately. Michael Ratterree led off the second inning with a walk. Taylor Brennan then singled to put runners on the corners. Rafael Neda stepped up and clobbered a two-run triple to give the Manatees a 2-1 lead.

 

Lakeland tied the game in the third on an RBI single by Francisco Martinez.

 

The Flying Tigers then took the lead on a solo home run from Tim Remes in the bottom of the fourth inning. It was Remes' first home run of the season.

 

Trailing 3-2 in the sixth, Brevard County was able to tie the game. Brennan, Neda and Angel Ortega singled consecutively. Ortega's RBI single scored Brennan and tied the game at three.

 

Marzec did not factor into the decision. He surrendered three runs on eight hits and three walks. He struck out one.

 

Paul Voelker (3-0, 1.80 ERA) was credited with the win in relief. He allowed one run on three hits in two innings.

 

The Manatees and Flying Tigers will continue the series tomorrow night. LHP Wei-Chung Wang (4-2, 5.93 ERA) is scheduled to start for Brevard County. RHP Jonathan Maciel (2-6, 6.47 ERA) will toe the rubber for Lakeland. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

9th Inning Meltdown Dooms Brewers

The Helena Brewers (2-3) lost a late lead Monday night to the Great Falls Voyagers (2-2) at Kindrick Field, falling by a score of 8-4.

 

Helena took an early lead with a run in the bottom of the first. Blake Allemand led off the inning with a double and scored later on the sacrifice fly of Steven Karkenny. The Brewers were able to come up with just three hits in the game.

 

Tanner Banks made a great impression in his first professional start for the Voyagers. Banks would pitch four innings, giving up one hit and one run while striking out two. He would not receive a decision.

 

The Voyagers tied it up quickly with a run in the top of the second. Johan Cruz reached on a two-out error by Allemand and scored on an RBI single from Victor Velasquez. Velasquez went 4-for-4 with a double, run and an RBI.

 

J.B. Kole was equally outstanding in the start for the Brewers. He would set a new season-high for a Helena starter by pitching into the eighth inning. He allowed one run on five hits and struck out two batters.

 

The Brewers would regain the lead in the seventh when two runs scored on a wild pitch by Ryan Hinchley to give Helena a 3-1 advantage. They padded that lead with an insurance run in the eighth courtesy of two Voyager mistakes. Karkenny reached on a passed ball strikeout and scored when Velasquez committed a fielding error at shortstop.

 

Armed with a 4-1 advantage heading to the ninth, the Brewers would not hang on. Donnie Hissa (0-1) gave up seven runs in the inning on six hits, including a double from Antonio Rodriguez. The Voyagers sprayed out six hits before an out was recorded in the frame.

 

The Voyagers and Brewers will face off in the finale of their four-game series Tuesday at Kindrick Field. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM (8:05 Central).

Voyagers' big inning dooms Brewers

A one-inning hitting clinic had vaulted the Helena Brewers in each of their 2015 wins.

 

On Monday night, however, the Brewers found themselves on the sour end of a single-frame shelling.

 

The Great Falls Voyagers rallied in the top the ninth by plating seven runs on six hits before downing the Brewers 8-4 at Kindrick Legion Field.

 

The Brewers (2-3), who led 4-1 going into the ninth, saw the Voyagers (2-2) tee off on reliever Donnie Hissa who gave up six hits before the inning's first out.

 

"You gotta tip your hat to (Great Falls) because they kept the swinging the bats," Brewers manager Tony Diggs said. "(Hissa) was just unfortunate tonight because everything seemed to find a hole, whether it was a flare or a ground ball, it found a hole. There's nothing you can do about that."

 

After being held to just three hits, the Brewers -- a team that totaled 44 hits going into Monday's game -- still put itself in a position to win. But a lot of that had to do with the Voyagers.

 

Carlos Belonis singled in the seventh inning and eventually reached third and Troy Stokes walked before stealing second, the Brewers' 13th theft of the year. With two outs Luis Avilles swung at a wild pitch that got past Voyagers catcher Zach Fish, which brought in Belonis and Stokes to make it a 3-1 ballgame.

 

An RBI single by David Denson scored Steven Karkenny to extend the Brewers' lead, which, at the time, had a lot to do with Brewers starting pitcher J.B. Kole.

 

Kole, a right-hander out of Villanova, gave up just one run on five hits in seven innings of work and walked just two hitters. He was pulled in the eighth for Hissa, who sat down all three batters he faced in the inning, two by strikeout.

 

"(Great Falls) was swinging early so I knew that as long as you're pounding the fast fall in the zone, you'll get early outs, so that was helpful" Kole said. "But sometimes you just put the ball in a good spot and they swing and the hit it and it's part of the game."

 

The Voyagers used five pitchers in their win with Danny Dopico, who had pitched the last two innings, earning the win. Starter Tanner Banks went four innings giving up two hits, one of which was a stand-up double by the Brewers' Blake Allemand who would score in the top of first after a sacrifice fly by Karkenny to give the Brewers an early 1-0 cushion.

 

The Brewers and Voyagers end their series Tuesday at Kindrick Field. Helena will start right-handed Bubba Blau (0-2, 33.75 ERA) and Great Falls will go with Northwestern product Brandon Magallones.

Catcher Kevin Martinez has only seen action in one game, laying a heavy burden on the club's only other backstop, Milan Post; all pitchers have seen action except for 2nd round RHP Cody Ponce and 8th round RHP Nate Griep.

The A-Crew held a slight 2-1 lead heading to the bottom of the 8th when two Angels singles to open the inning led to a tie game on an RBI groundout.

 

Four innings later, RHP David Lucroy made the mistake of walking the leadoff batter. Like they did in the 8th, the Angels executed a sacrifice bunt which set up a walkoff groundball single to right field.

 

Please check out the box score and you'll see that all six Brewer pitchers that preceded Lucroy were making their professional debuts (18th round Florida HS pick Gentry Fortuno, 24th round Ole Miss LHP Christian Trent, undrafted LHP Brad Kuntz, 21st round NC State RHP Jon Olczak, 35th round University of Hawaii LHP Quintin Torres-Costa, and undrafted RHP Alex Farina), and each fared well enough, as you could gather from the final score.
