Brewers Trounce Osprey For First Win

Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (1-1) blew the cover off the ball on Friday night for a 16-3 trouncing of the Missoula Osprey (1-1) at Kindrick Field.

Helena tacked eight runs on the board in the first inning and never looked back. Steven Karkenny came up with a two-RBI single in the inning on his way to a two-hit, three-RBI performance. Eight of the nine Brewer batters would score in the frame.

Anfernee Benitez (0-1) was not able to make it out of the first for the Osprey, giving up six runs and recording just one out.

Marcos Diplan (1-0) made a great first impression with the Brewers, pitching five solid innings. He would allow just one run while striking out eight. Diplan was traded to the Brewers earlier this season from the Texas Rangers as part of the Yovani Gallardo deal.

Jose Cuas had another stellar outing, picking up his second double of the year and batting in three more runs. The third baseman has accounted for two of the three extra-base hits Helena has thus far.

Carlos Belonis and Blake Allemand both turned in three-hit performances in the winning effort, combining for a lethal turnover of the lineup card.

The Brewers now head to Great Falls for one game against the Voyagers. First pitch Saturday from Centene Stadium is set for 7:00 PM (8:00 Central).

Helena's Marcos Diplan hurls a pitch in the third inning against the Missoula Osprey.

It took all of a 40-minute first inning for the Helena Brewers to give themselves enough cushion Friday night.

By the time second baseman Blake Allemand rounded first after his second base hit of the inning, the Brewers had jumped out to an eight-run lead on the Missoula Osprey. That early surge fueled a 16-3 laugher at Kindrick Legion Field.

A night after one porous inning doomed the Brewers in an Opening Day loss to the Osprey, the Milwaukee affiliate was able to flip the script and even the two-game series.

But the Brewers (1-1), who tallied 14 hits, didn't just drill the Osprey in one frame. A five-run third inning made the game as lopsided as 13-1 in front of a crowd of 1,102 and Helena kept its foot on the throttle.

"They were kind of struggling to find command, so we were ready to hit the fastball when it came over the plate," said Allemand, who was 3 for 5 with two RBIs. "As a team, I think we put some good swings on the ball. We laid off the marginal pitches and had a lot of walks. There was a lot of good at-bats up and down the lineup."

Brewers manager Tony Diggs, who saw his team steal four bases in the first, liked that his club stayed aggressive and smart at the plate, but was quick to point to Missoula's own miscues. The Osprey (1-1) committed five errors and walked nine batters.

"We took advantage of them not being able to throw the ball across the plate and they had a few miscues in the outfield as well that helped us," Diggs said. "We tell the guys from the beginning not to give up any at-bats and take every at-bat seriously"

Allemand, Carlos Belonis (3 for 5), Steven Karkenny (2 for 5, 3 RBI), Milan Post (2 for 4) and Luis Aviles all had multi-hit nights for the Brewers. Jose Cuas added three RBIs, including a two-run double.

The hitting deluge wasn't the sole cause of the rout, though. Much of that was credited to a defense paced by 18-year-old pitcher Marcos Diplan.

Diplan, who came to Brewers organization as part of a trade with the Rangers that involved the MLB's Yovani Gallardo for Luis Sardinas, was solid in five innings of work. The hard-throwing Dominican tallied eight strikeouts and gave up just one run on four hits.

"I thought I was decent, but in the third inning I got a little bit wild. But overall, it was a good night," Diplan said. "My defense played really good behind me."

That defense went a second night without an error and was fluid throughout the contest, turning three double plays -- one of which got Diplan out of a bases-loaded jam in the second.

Missoula starter Anfernee Benitez, who was given the loss, didn't even survive the first inning before getting pulled for Andrew Potter with just one out. Potter would go 2 1/3 innings and give up six more runs on seven hits. Missoula used five pitchers in the loss.

The Brewers made the quick jaunt up I-15 on Saturday to take on the Great Falls Voyagers at 7:00 PM (8:00 Central), before returning to Helena on Sunday afternoon to face the Voyagers at Kindrick Legion Field.

Helena Box Score

Helena was 7-for-24 with RISP, have we ever seen more RISP Opportunities?

LF Omar Cotto, undrafted out of USC, was 0-for-3 in his pro debut, but scored twice after a walk and HBP.

Still hope for a big career for RF Carlos Belonis, who won't turn 21 until August; remember, a broken thumb sidelined him for most of 2013...
