That didn't take long. Less than a day before the Brewers proved me a liar on promotions from the Manatees. Congratulations to Victor Roache. Manatees are expecting to play a man down until after the All Star Game (Saturday I think). Maybe Jose Pena will be back again?

Nice upcoming challenge for the Shuckers --

The best Jacksonville Suns’ news on Monday came from 300 miles away and involved Miami Marlins standout pitcher Jose Fernandez. Reports surfaced out of Miami that Fernandez will make a rehab start for the Suns on Saturday, June 27, against the Biloxi Shuckers. The Marlins pitcher had Tommy John surgery last year and just recently returned to the mound. Fernandez was originally slated to start the 2013 season with the Suns but a couple of injuries to Marlins starters resulted in his making the jump from Class-A Jupiter directly to the major leagues. Fernandez was only going to spend a couple weeks with the Marlins before coming to Jacksonville but he was so impressive early on, he stayed with the Marlins and went on to win the National League Rookie of the Year that season.

Fernandez has made two rehab starts for Jupiter and will make his next start in Rock Round, Texas on Wednesday for the Marlins’ Triple-A affiliate, the New Orleans Zephyrs. He will then make another appearance for Jupiter before embarking on his final rehab start in Jacksonville on the 27th. Fernandez announced on the Marlins television broadcast Monday night that he plans on returning to the Marlins after that and will make his first major league outing on July 2 in Miami against the San Francisco Giants.

Jose Fernandez will now make Wednesday's rehab start for single A Jupiter (at Brevard County) due to poor weather in Round Rock.

So both the Manatees and Shuckers get to face Jose...

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars pulled away from the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers with a six-run eighth inning on Tuesday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. The Cougars defeated Wisconsin 10-2.

Kane County (32-32) scored in the first inning. Ildemaro Vargas reached on a bunt single with one out. Marty Herum doubled to left with two outs and Vargas scored on the play for a 1-0 lead.

The Cougars added to their lead in the bottom of the third. Wisconsin starting pitcher Devin Williams walked Vargas and Herum. They were are first and second base with two outs when Chuck Taylor singled to right to drive in Vargas. Williams would walk the next batter to load the bases. The next pitch was a ball and catcher Greg McCall tried to pick the runner off first base. However, the throw sailed into right field to allow Herum to score the third run of the game for Kane County.

Wisconsin (21-44) got to Cougars starting pitcher Brad Keller in the sixth inning. Tucker Neuhaus reached on a bunt single to start the inning. Gregory Munoz followed with another bunt single. Dustin DeMuth's grounder to second was misplayed and Neuhaus raced home with the Rattlers first run. Francisco Castillo came through with a two-out single to knock in Munoz and the Rattlers were down a run.

Williams pitched five innings, allowed three runs - two earned - on four hits and four walks with six strikeouts.

Josh Uhen took over for Williams in the bottom of the sixth inning and walked Joe Munoz to start the inning. Uhen got a grounder to third off the bat of Ryan Gebhardt, but the throw to second was missed and instead of a double play, Munoz was on third and Gebhardt was on first. Victor Reyes grounded into a force out at second to score Munoz with an insurance run for Kane County.

The Cougars bullpen took over for Keller in the seventh and retired the final nine Timber Rattlers hitters in a row.

That made the six-run bottom of the eighth inning for the Cougars academic.

The frame started with Joshua Torres walking Joe Munoz and a dropped throw at second on another potential double play. Reyes singled in the first run of the inning. Cody Regis grounded into a force play at second for the first out. The next four Cougars hitters reached base. Vargas hit a two-run double to make the score 7-2. Michael Perez walked. Herum, who now has nine RBI in eight games against Wisconsin, hit an RBI double. Colin Bray singled to drive in Perez. Taylor capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to make it 10-2.

Neuhaus went 2-for-4 in the game and extended his current hitting streak to nine games. He is 11-for-34 during the streak for Wisconsin.

Game two of the series is Wednesday afternoon at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Cy Sneed (3-7, 2.62) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Markus Solbach (6-2, 2.76) is set to start for the Cougars. Game time is noon. Catch the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 11:40am. The broadcast may also be heard on Tune In Radio and IHeartRadio. Subscribers to MiLB.TV can follow the action that way.

WP: Brad Keller (3-7)

Wisconsin Boxscore

Remember the whole 3 steps forward, 2 steps back thing I was talking about pitching wise the other day? Well same/same for Devin Williams here matching his season high BB total for the 3rd time.

Joshua Torrez... I believe I ranted about his mechanics earlier this season, he's been similar to now demoted Milton Gomez in that they will both go for extended periods of time without being able to find the plate at all. To quickly summarize imagine lots of walks and if a pitch happens to be over the plate it's up and very hittable. With most guys it's a couple of batters, with those guys when it goes bad it seems to span an entire inning.

Tucker Neuhaus' night was mentioned above but joining him with multi-efforts were Gregory Munoz (2-4) and Francisco Castillo (2-4). I actually jinxed McCall by complimenting his defense the other day, the same thing happens every time I say Leal is doing a nice job as well.

The strike outs have fallen off somewhat with Denson, Harrison, and Gatewood demoted but this team still continues to put up alarming strike out numbers on a near nightly basis.

Final: DSL Brewers 7, DSL Yankees #2 Squad 0

DSL Brewers Box Score

Now this is how you do it! Only six hits allowed (four BB's, 10 K's), only one error committed.

The four pitchers you'll see in the box were all signed originally by Milwaukee. RHP Jesus Brea has given up just one unearned run over seven innings of relief (six appearances). 18-year-old Venezuelan rookie Joel Pinto now has two pro scoreless innings under his belt. LHP Boanerges Nova led the way here with five shutout (naturally considering the final score) innings.

DSL Brewers Game Log

18-year-old 2nd year pro 1B Nicol Valderrey, another Venezuelan, was 4-for-5, including a two-run home run and three RBI total. He's a right-handed bat. Former Rangers farmhand Anderson Jesus, coming off two years away from any official at-bats, also hit a two-run shot.

Hammerheads Offense Explodes in Blowout

By: Jerry Durney

Viera, Fla. – One night after being shutout, the Jupiter Hammerheads’ (32-33) bats left no doubt that there would not be a repeat performance as they used an early outburst for an emphatic 12-4 victory over the Brevard County Manatees (28-36) on Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium.

The game’s opening run would come in the top of the second inning, which started on a Justin Bohn double. Bohn would move up to second on a Harold Riggins groundout and then score on a Yuniel Ramirez single. Manatees starting pitcher Eric Marzec escaped further damage thanks to a pair of fielder’s choices sandwiched around a flyout.

Brevard County would draw level in the bottom half of the inning, starting with Garrett Cooper’s one-out double to left center. He would move to third on a Taylor Brennan groundout and then scored when Steven Halcomb lifted a fly ball into shallow right that was just beyond the reach of a diving Avery Romero.

The Hammerheads would bust the game open the following inning. Austin Dean started the rally with a leadoff double down the left field line. Felix Munoz followed with a single to right but Dean would be held up as he came around third. A walk to Brian Anderson loaded the bases for Bohn. Bohn would bring home Dean on a groundball to short that Angel Ortega decided to get the easier force out at third to retire Munoz. The bases would be loaded on a walk once again, this time to Riggins. Ramirez then followed with a dribbler up the first base line that Marzec fielded and flipped to the plate but Cameron Garfield could not hang on and two runs came in to score as the ball got to the backstop. After a Chris Hoo flyout, Yefri Perez hit a chopper towards the second base bag that Ortega misplayed into the outfield, allowing Riggins and Ramirez to score. The deluge concluded as Perez scored from first on a single to deep left center by Romero, who advanced to second on the throw home.

The onslaught continued with Manatee reliever Kaleb Earls on the mound as Munoz led off the top of the fourth with a home run to right centerfield, his third of the season. Following an Anderson groundout and Bohn flyout, Riggins walked and then scored on a Ramirez double.

The ‘Tees would have an uprising at the plate in the bottom of the seventh, which started with an infield single from Cooper. Brennan followed with a walk and then moved to second on a Halcomb single that would loaded the bases. The second Manatee run of the game across as Cooper scored on an Ortega groundout. Omar Garcia then brought home Brennan on a single to center and Halcomb would be plated soon after on a sacrifice fly from Chris McFarland. That would be all Brevard County could manage as Clint Coulter struck out following a Garfield single.

Jupiter tacked on three for window dressing in the top of the ninth, which started with four consecutive base hits off of Preston Gainey, the last of which scored Anderson. Tyler Spurlin replaced Gainey and immediately coaxed a double play from Hoo, scoring Bohn in the process. Riggins would score the final run of the night on a Perez single.

Marzec for the evening lasted two and two-thirds innings, giving up seven hits and seven runs, however only three of those runs were earned as the Manatees committed five errors on the night. Offensively, Brevard County got a three-hit night from Halcomb and Garfield extended his hitting streak to five with a multi-hit game, including a double.

Eight Hammerheads recorded a hit, led by Perez and Ramirez, who each had three. Ramirez also recorded three RBI. Lost in the Hammerheads’ 14-hit attack was a solid pitching performance by former Brewer Chris Narveson. The left-hander went six and one-third innings, giving up four runs on seven hits, striking out three and walking two.

Outstanding starting pitching should be on display once again in Viera on Wednesday as newly minted Florida State League All-Star RHP Javi Salas (5-4, 2.60 ERA) will be on the mound against the rehabbing 2013 National League Rookie Of The Year RHP Jose Fernandez (0-1, 5.63 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 P.M.

Brevard County Box Score

It was originally 5 errors but they changed one to a hit. Botched run down, flip back to the pitcher gets away after a pickoff attempt, everything went wrong here. Garfield was 2 for 4 with a double (thrown out trying for a triple), Cooper was 2 for 4 with a double, Brennan had 2 walks and Stephen Halcomb, in a spot start, had three hits. Halcomb would have been 4 for 4 but his other at bat was a potential bloop hit but Brennan had to hold up to see if the outfielder would catch the ball and was forced at second. On to Jose Fernandez.

Sadly, the Shuckers' mascot situation is on hold -- as long as its name will be "Shuck Norris", as we read earlier, we're OK with this.

Sound Off in Action

Sound Off: When will the Shuckers' mascot be out for the public to see? I had read the costume needed a few changes and to be tweaked a bit. So is it ready for us to see yet?

Answer: Biloxi Shuckers fans will have to wait a while longer before a new mascot appears at MGM Park.

Shuckers general manager Buck Rogers said Tuesday that a mascot may not become a reality until the late stages of the season.

"The mascot is kind of on hold as we go through options and changes," Rogers said. "It's probably going to be late summer or into the fall. I don't have 100 percent of everybody on board with the designs. We need them all in line. We have some good starting off points and really good drawings. I have kids and parents that are happy, but I need staff and owners. Everybody has different visions.

"It's all part of the process. I don't want to do it fast. I want to do it right."

Weather Benefits Sky Sox In Shortened 2-1 Win

Schafer's Two-Run Game Backs Additon's Strong Five-Inning Start

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - Rain put a slight damper on a ballgame for the second straight night, this time benefitting Colorado Springs as they took home a 2-1 win in a rain-shortened five and a half inning contest before a crowd of 6,875 at Security Service Field on Tuesday night.

The Sky Sox scored the first run of the ballgame in the bottom of the second, doing so for the second consecutive evening. This time OKC starter Steve Smith would be on the wrong end of first blood as a one-out Logan Schafer double, and eventual move to third on a fielding error by Dodgers right fielder Kyle Jensen, gave Yadiel Rivera a chance to showcase his clutch bat. Rivera saw a whopping 13 pitches in his first and only at-bat against Smith before lining an RBI single into centerfield to score Schafer. Colorado Springs held the 1-0 lead until the fourth inning when both sides would make appearances on the scoreboard.

Making his first start since May 17th against Round Rock, Nick Additon (2-2, 6.36) tossed five very strong innings of one-run ball against a potent Dodgers lineup. The lefty allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out three in an impressive start. After allowing a leadoff single to Darnell Sweeney to start the night, Additon would retire nine straight batters before a Buck Britton one out single in the fourth broke the string. Britton single turned out to be a big one as the second baseman eventually scored on a two out single by first baseman Andy Wilkins. Additon worked out of further trouble, getting O'Koyea Dickson on an inning-ending groundout to maintain the 1-1 tie through three and a half innings of play.

The Sox offense answered immediately, plating the go-ahead run in the following frame to retake a one-run lead. Once again, Schafer served as Colorado Springs' spark plug, doubling off the left field wall to leadoff the Sox fourth against newly implanted reliever Matt West (0-1, 8.03). Rivera followed with yet another lengthy at-bat before ultimately flying out to right, giving Schafer the chance to scurry to third on a close tag play and the Sox a runner 90 feet from home with just one out. Pete Orr came through with a fly ball deep enough to left to plate Schafer with the lead run. The sacrifice fly gave Orr his 28th RBI of the season and Schafer his second run scored of the ballgame.

After a quick 1-2-3 fifth inning, Additon was replaced by Michael Kirkman in the sixth after throwing just 64 pitches. The left-handed reliever promptly gave up a leadoff double to the speedy Sweeney, leaving the Sox in what seemed to be another precarious situation. Kirkman settled down however, retiring the Dodgers 2, 3 and 4 hitters with relative ease to wiggle out of the jam and preserve the 2-1 lead.

The elements again played a factor in the sixth in a game where Déjà Vu was working in Colorado Springs' favor early. Heading into the home half of the frame, the skies opened to force an hour long rain delay before the game was ultimately called off due to unplayable wet grounds.

Winding up on the fortunate end of the shortened contest, the Sky Sox improve to 26-35 on the season while dropping Oklahoma City to 42-22.

The Sky Sox will look to clinch a series win on Wednesday afternoon in what looks to be a full, nine-inning game. Drew Gagnon (1-8, 7.64) takes the mound against Dodgers lefty Ian Thomas (3-0, 7.11) as the Sox starter looks to lead the Sox to two straight victories against their division rivals. First pitch is slated for 12:35 PM MDT (1:35 Central) at Security Service Field.
