Matt Dominguez claimed and optioned; Wei-Chung Wang designated for assignment (Wang outrighted; post 100)

I don't think too many people really had a problem with claiming Dominguez on the off chance he develops his power and other parts of his game into a positive value, especially considering 3rd base is an organizational black hole right now.

I think a lot of people viewed it as a *possible* trade off of Wang's potential for Dominguez, and nobody was happy with that. True, Wang has not performed as of yet, but you don't just go tossing young lefties who work low 90's to the scrap heap.

They got lucky (of a sort) that nobody claimed him. Of course the 300K was a factor, and they likely knew that would play a role. So they got Dominguez for nothing, and that's fine. People just weren't looking at it as a straight pick up of Dominguez, which it never was.

I don't think Wang has his velocity but I would hate for this to turn into a Jorge De La Rosa situation.

Even if it does I don't think paying a guy for 3 or 4 years for the hope that he gives you 1 or 2 good years is worthwhile. It has the same net effect as giving too many years to older veterans.

We are talking league minimum money. That is easily worth while if he pans out. Look how we handled Marco Estrada. We could easily keep Wang in the minors for a few years then use him in the back end of the bullpen while he develops. Especially considering how the team looks in the next few years that is not a very big deal.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

We are also talking about a spot on the team that could be used for someone who is actually good enough to be there. Not to mention those years are only cheap if he sucks. JDLR was not good here. Marco Estrada was. Even in his cheap years. It takes one good year to change that once he hits arbitration. If we carry a guy for three years and in year four he gets good we then get a guy who is decent but we have to pay for that in his arbitration years like we would have for someone like Estrada who was a capable contributor in the cheap years. Yet we didn't get the production during those cheap years. Where is the advantage in that?

We still have 2 options left with Wang. That is 5 cheap years beyond this year.

He's also in single A and not doing very well there. At this point he is looking like he is at least five years away from being close to major league ready.

I have no idea what effect it had on Wang, but I think the whole Rule 5 process can really screw up a player. You take a kid who isn't ready for the majors, force a team to keep him there, give him very little playing time during which he is ridiculously overmatched, potentially destroying his confidence and leading to him changing how he goes about his whole game. Throw in that neither the fans nor his teammates think that he deserves to be there and probably let him know it, and I don't think the whole process does the player any favors.

Hopefully Wang can get it together, as he does have the tools to be a major leaguer.
