Palm Beach Blanks Brevard County in Game One

Cardinals Win First Game of Doubleheader, 3-0

By Dave Walkovic / Brevard County Manatees

06/11/2015 7:33 PM ET

Jupiter, Fla. - Alex Reyes and Kevin Herget combined for a five-hit shutout as the Palm Beach Cardinals (27-32) defeated the Brevard County Manatees (26-32) 3-0 in game one of Thursday's doubleheader at Roger Dean Stadium.

Reyes (2-4, 1.98 ERA) allowed three hits and four walks over five innings en route to his second victory of the season. He struck out eight of the 15 men he retired. Herget tossed the final two innings to record his second save of the year.

The Cardinals took the lead early and never looked back. In the bottom of the first inning, C.J. McElroy and Brett Wiley singled consecutively with no outs to put runners on the corners. After Eric Marzec (1-4, 3.76) struck out David Washington, Derek Gibson bounced into an RBI fielder's choice to put Palm Beach in front.

Palm Beach added to the lead in the sixth. With one out, Casey Turgeon reached on an infield single. Robelys Reyes then doubled down the left field line to end Marzec's night. Stephen Peterson came on in relief with runners on second and third. McElroy doubled to left to score both runners and gave the Cardinals a 3-0 advantage. Peterson retired two of the next three hitters and escaped with no further damage.

Marzec surrendered three runs on 11 hits in 5.1 innings. He walked one and fanned five.

Brevard County was limited to just five hits - all singles - in the loss. Omar Garcia led the offensive charge with two hits and two stolen bases.

DAYTON, OH - Devin Williams allowed one run on two hits over six innings and was backed by a 14-hit attack from the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers offense in an 8-1 win over the Dayton Dragons Thursday night at Fifth Third Field.

Wisconsin (19-41) grabbed the lead in the first inning. Brandon Diaz singled with one out and Elvis Rubio doubled to put runners at second and third. Dustin DeMuth drove in Diaz with a grounder to second.

The Rattlers added to their lead in the second inning. Carlos Leal, Jake Gatewood, and Tucker Neuhaus started the second with consecutive singles to load the bases. Monte Harrison followed with a double off the wall in right to drive in Leal and Gatewood. The throw to the infield got away and that allowed Neuhaus to score and Harrison to take third base. Sthervin Matos made it 5-0 with a sacrifice fly that scored Harrison.

DeMuth doubled to start the Wisconsin third inning. Leal drove in DeMuth with a one-out single and Wisconsin's lead reached 6-0.

Wisconsin starting pitcher Devin Williams retired the first ten batters he faced in the game. He walked Luis Gonzalez with one out in the fourth. A bloop single by Gavin LaValley on a hit-and-run put Gonzalez to third base. Brian O'Grady drove in Gonzalez with a sacrifice fly to left to get the Dragons (31-29) on the scoreboard.

Williams pitched six innings for the Timber Rattlers. The only other hit he allowed was a two-out bunt single by Jimmy Pickens in the fifth inning. Williams walked one and struck out four to put himself in line for his second straight win.

Wisconsin padded their advantage with a run in the top of the seventh inning. Francisco Castillo singled with two outs and moved to second on a balk. Leal singled, his third hit of the night, to drive in Castillo for a 7-1 lead.

The Dragons put two runners on with no outs in the bottom of the seventh against reliever Joshua Torres, but Paul Kroenenfeld hit a line drive at Tucker Neuhaus, who was able to turn an unassisted double play by stepping on second base. In the eighth, Dayton had runners at first and third with one out against Torres, but the Wisconsin reliever got LaValley to ground into an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play.

Wisconsin plated one more run in the game. Rubio doubled, his third double of the game, to start the ninth inning. He would score on an two-out error later in the inning.

Josh Uhen, the Rattlers third pitcher of the night, allowed a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth. He would retire the next three batters to close out the game.

The Timber Rattlers collected fourteen hits in the game to match their season-high hit total. The Timber Rattlers also had five doubles in the game.

Game three of the series is Friday night at Fifth Third Field. Cy Sneed (2-7, 2.41) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Dayton will send Tejay Antone (3-5, 2.73) to the mound. Game time is 6:07pm CDT. Catch the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 5:45pm. The broadcast may also be heard on Tune In Radio and IHeartRadio. Subscribers to MiLB.TV can follow the action that way.

WP: Devin Williams (2-3)

LP: Jose Morillo (1-1)

TIME: 2:35

ATTN: 8,635

Wisconsin Boxscore

Devin Williams has made rapid adjustments, as bad as his first 3 appearances were his last 3 have been that good lowering his ERA to just under 4. He's slowly lowering his BB rate as well, he's been excellent of late. With the Medeiros/Burkhalter tandem pitching well, Williams finding his groove, Sneed's steady dominance, and Angel Ventura's filth this rotation has slowly turned a corner. This could be a fun second half.

I highlighted the Monte Harrison double above not just because he doubled the other way, but because I don't remember him taking a ball the other way all season. It's entirely possible it wasn't his first given the games I've missed, but it stuck out as progress to tattoo a ball the other way. Monte now has hits in 4 of the last 6 games, it would be awesome if he could keep this going as he transitions down to Helena.

Elvis Rubio (3-5, 3 2B), Dustin DeMuth (2-5,2B), Carlos Leal (3-5), and Jake Gatewood (2-4) had the multi-hit games for the T-Rats in this one.

Gronsky's Walk-Off Single Sinks Manatees

Palm Beach Wins Game Two, 2-1; Sweeps Doubleheader

By Dave Walkovic / Brevard County Manatees

06/11/2015 10:08 PM ET

Jupiter, Fla. - Jake Gronsky delivered the game-winning hit in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Palm Beach Cardinals (28-32) defeated the Brevard County Manatees (26-33) 2-1 in game two of Thursday's doubleheader at Roger Dean Stadium.

With the game tied at one after six and a half innings, Preston Gainey (2-2, 1.05 ERA) was summoned from the bullpen as Brevard County attempted to force extra innings. Jose Godoy drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second by Casey Turgeon. C.J. McElroy reached on an infield single to advance Godoy to third. After Brett Wiley walked to load the bases, the stage was set for Gronsky. Gronsky singled to center to plate Godoy and win the game for the Cardinals.

Brevard County tied the game with a run in the top of the seventh inning. Michael Ratterree doubled to left off of Palm Beach starter Rob Kaminsky with no outs. Victor Roache then singled through the left side to score Ratterree and tie the game. Roache advanced to second on a throwing error by left fielder Derek Gibson. Kaminsky was removed in favor of Josh Lucas. After a pop out, Rafael Neda lined a single to center. Roache tried to score, but was gunned down at the plate by McElroy and the game remained tied. Neda moved to second on the throw. Lucas (3-2, 1.26 ERA) retired Angel Ortega on a fly out to end the threat.

The Cardinals originally took the lead in the bottom of the second against Brevard County starter Clint Terry. Juan Herrera doubled to right to lead off the frame. Two batters later, Godoy singled to move Herrera to third. Turgeon then singled into center to open the scoring.

Terry did not factor into the decision. He allowed one run on seven hits over five innings. He did not walk a man and walked six. Tristan Archer tossed a perfect sixth inning in relief.

The Manatees will start a three-game series in Clearwater against the Threshers tomorrow night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Bright House Field. Wei-Chung Wang (3-2 5.73 ERA) will toe the rubber for Brevard County. Victor Arano (0-7, 6.20 ERA) will get the start for Clearwater.

Brigham handcuffs Shuckers in series opening 5-1 loss

Division lead drops to 3 1/2 and the magic number remains a six

Tyler Wagner allowed five runs over six hits on Thursday night in Pearl, suffering his second loss (Cliff Welch/Icon Sportswire)

PEARL, MS - M-Braves starter Jake Brigham (6-2) continued his dominance of the Southern League on Thursday night, this time holding the Shuckers to three hits in a 5-1 series opening loss at Trustmark Park. The loss drops the Shuckers' division lead to 3 ½ games over the Braves with nine to play in the first half. The magic number remains at six. Brigham, the back-to-back recipient of the Southern League Pitcher of the Week award and Southern League All-Star has surrendered just two runs on five hits over his last three starts and 25 innings pitched. Nick Ramirez' ninth inning single prevented a new franchise low in hits as the three hits matched a season-low.

Biloxi (36-24) opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first courtesy of an RBI fielder's choice grounded into by All-Star shortstop Orlando Arcia (0x4, RBI). The game started with a leadoff walk to Nathan Orf (0x3, R, BB) and he moved to third on a single from Josh Fellhauer (1x3, BB). That would be the final hit that Brigham would surrender until the eighth.

Meanwhile the Braves (32-27) tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single from Eric Garcia that scored Rio Ruiz, who opened the frame with a double.

The focal inning of the game was the fourth as the M-Baves pushed across four runs against Biloxi starter Tyler Wagner (5-2, 2.43). Ruiz opened the inning with his second double of the game and ninth on the year which was followed by back-to-back walks. Matt Lipka plated Ruiz with a sacrifice fly to center to break the tie and then with two outs, leadoff hitter and the current Southern League leader in batting (.350), Mallex Smith (unsigned 13th round Milwaukee draft pick, 2011) tripled home two to make it 4-1 Braves. Emerson Landoni followed with a single that snuck by Biloxi first baseman Ramirez (1x4) and scored Smith to push the lead to 5-1. Smith has nine hits in his last 19 at-bats.

Wagner suffered just his second loss allowing a season-high five runs on six hits over six innings pitched, walking three and striking out six. The All-Star righty did retire seven of the last eight he faced to close his outing. Brigham earned his third straight win and followed his near perfect game by allowing just one run on two hits over eight innings, walking two and striking out five.

The M-Braves lead the head-to-head season series 4-2 - all of which have been played at Trustmark Park (May 6-10 Biloxi served as the home team). Thursday night's game was delayed 1 hour and 32 minutes due to potential storms in the area, but no rain fell at Trustmark Park.

Biloxi will try to even the series on Friday night, with game two of the five game set. RHP Jorge Lopez (3-2, 3.38) toes the rubber for the Shuckers against M-Braves RHP Greg Ross (2-5, 5.30). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM, with coverage beginning at 6:45 on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Fans can also listen to the game using the TuneIn Radio app or by going to www.biloxishuckers.com.

Biloxi Box Score

Orlando Arcia's season-long standard tough to maintain, now 8-for-40 (two walks) in his last ten games...

Biloxi Game Log

For that matter, RHP Tyler Wagner's standard tough to maintain as well; click on Tyler's stat line there and check out the "earned runs" column, last night was certainly an outlier...
