Jungmann to start Tuesday against the Pirates [Latest: Will start again on Sunday vs Nationals]

BrewersAA
Thornburg (1-2 with a 3.98 ERA in 8 starts) gets passed over, for a third time :-(, this time for Taylor Jungmann. Jungmann is 2-3 with a 6.37 ERA in 11 games (nine starts) at Class AAA Colorado Springs this season. The say its not just the altitude in Colorado springs that causes the ball to fly out with regularity but it also really affects the way the pitcher grips the ball, lets hope taylor is more comfortable in milwaukee.

It's not about how the ball flies off the bat. It's about gripping the ball and how breaking balls don't break right, which may be from gripping the ball.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

Specific to Thornburg, I have no idea why the team has left him where he is, but I don't mind Jungmann getting a start. I'm glad, at least, that the team has been getting some different guys to Milwaukee, to get a look at them - why not?

Someone will fill Lohse's spot in the rotation, no later that Opening Day, 2016, and there will be turnover in the bullpen too, to replace Broxton and Cotts - opportunity, young men.

Pardon me for being skeptical but with the draft this week, the focus gets turned on Melvin's draft record and having Jungmann reach the majors, deserving or not, will be hailed as a win for the embattled GM. Thornburg deserves the start. Agree that Cravy better make the next one though after a strong outing today.

I have a feeling it is open tryouts in anticipation of Lohse and Garza going to the first team that will eat their remaining salaries.

The Brewers have a pretty good idea who Thornburg is, and wanted to see Wagner, Jungman, and Cravy(Cravy threw 6 shutout today at AAA).

I wont be surprised if we see Brooks Hall as well before the season ends.

They need to juggle the roster and call up a 5th starter only when needed until Smith's suspension is over. Then they can bring up a semi-permanent 25th man/5th starter who will remain with the team until Peralta returns. With the rule being that a guy has to spend 10 days in the minors after being sent down, that would be the reason they aren't recalling Thornburg - after Tuesday's game they will send that starter back down, thus that player won't be eligible to return when Smith's suspension is up. By calling up Jungmann (can't recall Cravy, hasn't been 10 days yet) it leaves the possibility to call up Thornburg after Smith's suspension is up.

It's roster management due to a 24-man limit right now; there may be something to the audition/"give them a look since we may be trading Lohse and Garza", but other than that, nothing more, nothing less than roster management.

the Brewers always have good reasons for these moves. We know Wagner and Cravy aren't eligible. Maybe with Thorny they want him to continue getting stretched out. Or maybe his velocity and command still isn't there. I can't really say anything negative with Jungmann as his 2014 was really good. It's worth giving him a look for a start or two

Melvin has little to nothing to do with the draft.

He's the boss of baseball operations. That includes the draft. The director of scouting reports to him.

I know Melvin has the final call on everything, but i would hope that he lets his scouting director make the pick. Its why you have a scouting director. When Jack Z was here, i never got the impression that Melvin had much say in who the brewers took.

The only exception I can think of was when Melving vetoed Jack Z in the 2nd round of the draft when Yo Gallardo was available. Jack Z didn't like drafting HS arms, and was probably going to draft a HS bat (again), but Melvin stepped in and told him to select Gallardo. At least that's how the story went as I remember it.

Actually no, the debate was between Gallardo and Erik Cordier, Melvin was present but the debate was between the scouts and crosscheckers in the room. I would go back and find Colby's post on it but I'm too lazy.

Thornburg probably deserved the start. but i think the brewers just want to see what they have in these young arms. They have seen what they have in Thornburg

Exactly, plus they don't want to burn another option on Thorny. At this point it's not about earning a start. I would expect Lopez and Hall to get a look at some point this year to start a game, and a few others will get a look in the pen. Chapman, Magnifico, Ross, etc. That is one of the advantages of being the worst team in MLB, it gives you a chance to look at a lot of players.

teams with the worst records. the brewers are not the worst team, they just had the worst start imaginable, and have almost been .500 in May/June so far.

Love getting a chance to see some young kids play though!

I just want them to be smart as well. If the Brewers have to add the player to the 40 man at the end of the year then feel free to bring them up and take a look. However, don't bring up a guy like Hobbs Johnson or Kyle Wren just for kicks when the 40 man spot can be used to claim another guy during the off season or to add somebody else to the 40 man that they might otherwise lose.

Options are for the whole year. He's already used his option for this year, so it doesn't matter how often he is sent back and forth.
