Nick Ramirez tallied four hits for the second time on Wednesday, plus added his eighth home run (Benton Reed Photography)

BIRMINGHAM, AL - Nick Ramirez (4x5, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R, 2B) and Michael Reed (2x5, HR, 2 RBI, R) brought their boom-sticks to Regions Field on Tuesday morning, accounting for five of the Shuckers' six runs in their 6-2 victory over the Birmingham Barons. Ramirez finished the game a triple short of the cycle. With the win, the first half magic number goes down to 15 with 17 to play in the half.

Biloxi (32-20) struck for four runs in the second and never looked back. A leadoff double by Ramirez was followed by Reed's fifth home run of the season to give the Shuckers a 2-0 lead. Taylor Green (2x4, R) and Tyrone Taylor (1x4, R) followed with back-to-back singles, and a sacrifice bunt by Parker Berberet (0x3) moved the runners to second and third. Josh Fellhauer (1x3, 2 RBI, BB) singled to right to bring in both base runners to extend the lead to four. Berberet's hitless performance snapped his eight-game hitting streak.

Birmingham (25-28) scratched across two runs in the fourth on an RBI triple to center by Christian Marrero, scoring Brian Fletcher. Marrero scored on an error in center by Kyle Wren (2x5).

Ramirez added his eighth long ball of the season on a towering, two-run shot to right to give the Shuckers a 6-2 lead. The left-handed swinger extended his hitting streak to eight games with the four-hit performance.

Brooks Hall (W, 5-3, 6 IP, 2 R, 5 H, 2 BB, 6 SO) worked effectively in his first start in June, going six innings and allowing the two runs on five hits, with two walks and six strikeouts. The South Carolina native gave up his first hit with one out in the fourth, facing just one over the minimum through the first three innings.

Jacob Barnes (1.2 IP, R, 3 H, 2 BB, 2 SO) worked out of two-out trouble in the seventh, but allowed a run to cross in the eighth on a RBI single by Rob Brantly. Damien Magnifico worked the final 1.1 innings, striking out four en route to picking up his fifth save of the season.

Biloxi will attempt its fourth consecutive series victory on Thursday night against the Barons. LHP Brent Suter (3-1, 2.43) will make his second start of the year against Birmingham, picking up the win on May 22 with six innings of shut-out ball. The Barons will counter with RHP Frankie Montas (0-1, 3.29), who allowed three runs - two earned - over five innings against the Shuckers on May 24. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM, with coverage beginning at 6:50 on 1240-AM WGCM and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Fans can also listen to the game using the TuneIn Radio app or by going to www.biloxishuckers.com.

Biloxi Box Score

Nick Ramirez has reduced his K rate from 31% in 2014 to 23.5% this season. His walk rate is up slightly. Click on Ramirez' stat line to see that all his slash numbers are way, way up. He truly has had a remarkable first two months, somewhat under-reported in all the Arcia - Reed - Rivera - Taylor prospect hoopla. Nick will be 26 in August, certainly not ancient, but regardless, kudos sir.

Day off for Orlando Arcia? No problem, Nick Shaw reaches twice and the team rolls on.

Michael Reed? Those are league MVP-type numbers, in his age 22 season, folks!

Starter Brooks Hall's brief stumble is now a memory, and loving RH closer Damien Magnifico again here (four batters, four outs, three K's, WHIP now 1.03).

Biloxi Game Log

These guys shook off a 10-0 Monday loss with two more solid road wins, with contributions throughout the roster. When do we run out of superlatives?

OF Bryan Petersen has been active on the Colorado Springs roster since May 22nd, when he was last shuffled back on from the paper "Helena" roster. He last saw action on May 24th, a week and a half ago.

And now, with Matt Long and Logan Schafer the only other outfielders on the Sky Sox roster now that Shane Peterson is with the big league club, Petersen is needed, but he's idle again tonight, and we get Pete Orr in left field (no offense, Pete).

We'll try and learn what Petersen's status is.

Ex-Ute pitcher Tyler Wagner had brief, memorable debut in the bigs

By Kyle Goon, The Salt Lake Tribune

The difference between playing for 4,000 fans and playing for 32,000 is easy to appreciate, but more difficult to prepare for.

The advice Tyler Wagner got ahead of his first major league start: "You just have to be able to control what you can control. How you act. I tried to just do the things that got me there."

It was a short MLB debut for Wagner on Sunday, when he lasted three and two-thirds of an inning for the Milwaukee Brewers in a long game. But at the very least, his first — and so far only — game in the bigs ended with a win as the Brewers bested the Diamondbacks 7-6 after 17 innings at Miller Park.

The length of the game actually kept Wagner from staying up in Milwaukee: He's already returned to Double-A Biloxi this week after being swapped out for another pitching arm. And while he admits his first MLB experience was "sort of frustrating" since he gave up nine hits and five runs, it's also one to remember.

"It was unbelievable," he said in an interview with the Tribune on Wednesday. "There was about 20 family members I had there. To play in front of them was amazing."

Wagner heard he was coming up on Friday in the Biloxi Shuckers clubhouse, and his teammates immediately showered him with well wishes. Wagner was the first to be called up from the club to the big leagues this year.

"Everybody was in there," he said. "It was awesome to see the support from the guys you've played with all year, and they're almost as happy as you are."

Being added to the 40-man roster is a huge step for Wagner, who said he didn't get much indication that he would be moved up ahead of the official announcement. He was performing well in Double A: The one-time Ute is 5-1 this year with a 2.01 ERA in the minors.

Being up with the Brewers, even for a quick weekend swing, was staggering in its comforts. Wagner said he's never felt so catered to when playing a game.

"The biggest difference is the way they treat you up there, make sure you're comfortable and happy," he said. "The only thing you have to worry about is baseball."

The brief stay and return does make him wonder when he'll be up again, but Wagner said he's confident in Brewers management and feels like he's a part of the organization's long-term plans.

His MLB debut led to plenty of congratulations, including from former coach Bill Kinneberg and a few of his former Utah teammates, he said.

On Saturday, Wagner will be making another first start in a new stadium: He's scheduled to pitch in the just-constructed MGM Park in Biloxi's first true home game. To this point, the Shuckers played 55 straight road games.

Even if his current home isn't in Milwaukee, it's nice to finally have one.

"We've been waiting for that day all season," he said. "It'll be great to finally pitch in front of a home crowd."

Have since learned Bryan Petersen "could be back" in 5-7 days.

From the big leagues to the lowest DSL level, and it seems this is the case every season, outfield depth at nearly every level is thin, thin, thin.

In spot start, Terry terrific for Manatees

Brewers southpaw allows a run, fans career-high 10 in seven frames

By Kelsie Heneghan / MiLB.com

Over his last two starts, Clint Terry has allowed two runs on six hits in 13 innings for Brevard County. (Cliff Welch/MiLB.com)

Before the season began, Clint Terry was informed he would be a long reliever and make a few spot starts. Although he had been a starter most of his life, he knew his goals wouldn't change just because his innings totals did.

In his third start of the season, the Brewers left-handed prospect allowed a run on three hits over a career-long seven innings as Class A Advanced Brevard County topped Daytona, 5-2, on Wednesday at Space Coast Stadium.

"Whenever I get a chance to get the start, I got to live up to [the organization's] expectations and try to help my team get a 'W,'" he said. "It's not my choice, but whatever they tell me to do, I'm going to go do it. I really just go out there and pitch."

With the Manatees giving him an early lead, Terry (1-1) tossed two perfect frames before Reds' No. 16 prospect Taylor Sparks led off the third inning with his fourth homer of the season.

"I fell behind, 2-0, and then I got back to 2-1 and then I left a fastball over too much of the plate. It was a great piece of hitting on his part," the 22-year-old said.

Reds' No. 26 prospect Sebastian Elizalde belted a double after Sparks' blast, but then Terry retired the next nine Manatees. The 6-foot-2 hurler yielded a single to Carlton Daal -- Cincinnati's No. 23 prospect -- but was otherwise perfect to earn his first win since July, when he was with Class A Wisconsin. The Illinois native struck out a career-high 10 without issuing a free pass.

"I felt pretty good. I had the wind at my back and good defense, so I was just pounding the zone and letting them do the work," he said. "Just getting ahead with the first-pitch fastball and then just keeping guys off balance with the changeup and curveball really helps. … Once you're 0-1, you can use all your pitches that you have. It helps when you're able to locate all three pitches for that night and then just trusting your defense."

Terry was a starter at Lee University before the Brewers took him in the 18th round of the 2013 Draft. Since then, he made 42 appearances, including 16 starts. Over his last two starts, Terry has held Florida State League opponents to two runs on six hits in 13 innings. He allowed an unearned run over three innings in two relief appearances in between.

While he thinks the plan is to stay with the current arrangement, Terry said it doesn't make a difference to him what inning he enters the game.

"If I ever get chances, I'm going to go out there and do my best," he said. "It's the same mentality, just got to get ahead with the first pitch and then trying to get ground balls and let your defense work."

Preston Gainey struck out the final batter of the game to pick up his first save of the season.

Reds' No. 6 prospect Nick Travieso (3-5) allowed four unearned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six in 4 2/3 innings.

Final: DSL Brewers 9, DSL Rangers #2 Squad 5

DSL Brewers Box Score

Yee-hah, the DSL kids break the win column (1-3)!

Eleven base knocks (four for extra bases), six walks, and an HBP for the Cerveceritos, aided by three Ranger errors.

Have a night, 21-year-old RF Anderson Jesus! The former Ranger farmhand, idle for both the 2013 and 2014 seasons, got back at his former organization by reaching in all five trips (double, two singles, two walks). Yerison Pena, the former three-year Tiger farmhand, homered, doubled, and drove in four. 21-year-old 2nd year catcher Dilson Fernandez singled twice and walked.

It wasn't all pretty, as the middle infield combo of second baseman Franly Mallen and shortstop Ignacio Otano combined for four errors. The Brewers were unsuccessful in two of three stolen base attempts.

Congratulations to rookie 17-year-old Javier Castillo, playing third base, on his first professional base hit. He also walked and drove in two.

DSL Brewers Game Log

Third-year RHP Rodrigo Benoit got the start, but the mound story in this game was the stellar work of 22-year-old 2nd-year Brewer RHP Juan Diaz, who faced just one over the minimum in five innings (1 H, 0 BB, 6 K). Another 2nd year Brewer RHP, 19-year-old Jesus Brea, finished up with a scoreless inning. It was the 2nd outing of the season for both Diaz and Brea.

Wisconsin wins 3-2 over Lake County

Burkhalter strikes out seven, picks up first pro win

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/4/0/0/128487400/cuts/6_May3Burkhalter_pxswc5b9_c2viluln.jpg

David Burkhalter struck out seven over four scoreless innings and earned his first professional win for the Timber Rattlers on Wednesday night.

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers broke a 2-2 tie with an eighth inning run and it was enough for a 3-2 over the Lake County Captains on Wednesday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. David Burkhalter earned his first professional victory with four shutout innings and seven strikeouts.

Kodi Medeiros made the start for the Timber Rattlers (16-37) and retired the first six batters he faced in the game. The Captains (25-27) would get to Medeiros in the third inning.

Francisco Mejia started the third inning with a walk and David Armendariz followed with a single. Ordomar Valdez bunted the runners over to second and third. Greg Allen cashed in one run with a grounder. Claudio Bautista made it 2-0 with a two-out single to drive in Armendariz.

Wisconsin rallied with two unearned runs in the bottom of the third. Alan Sharkey reached on an error and was balked to second base, but he was still at second with two outs. Francisco Castillo drove in the first Rattlers run with a single. Sthervin Matos tied the game with an double.

Burkhalter took the mound in the top of the sixth inning and allowed a one out double to Bautista. Burkhalter would strike out the next two batters to end the sixth. He would strike out the side in order in the top of the seventh.

The winning rally for the Timber Rattlers came in the bottom of the eighth. Brandon Diaz reached on a single and a passed ball allowed him to take second base. Castillo bunted for a hit to put runners at the corners. Matos sent a chopper over the mound. Bautista charged from his second base position and fired home, but Diaz beat the throw to score the go-ahead run.

Diaz made a diving catch on a sinking line drive off the bat of Yu-Cheng Chang to start the top of the ninth. Burkhalter struck out the next two batters to close out the win. The seven strikeouts by Burkhalter set a new single-game high for him as a professional.

The win snapped Wisconsin's three-game losing streak and extended Lake County's losing streak to four games.

Game two of the series is Thursday night. Luis Ortega (1-4, 4.08) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Anderson Polanco (2-5, 3.78) is set to start for the Captains. Game time is 7:05pm.

The tradition continues on Thursday night as the Timber Rattlers host their annual Salute to Cows Night with plenty to honor the industry that makes Wisconsin America's Dairyland! Players and coaches will wear the specially-designed jerseys with a cow pattern. The jerseys will be available in a silent auction during the game with proceeds going to Freedom Food Pantry. Lamers Dairy will hand out samples of their products to fans after the game.

Additionally, the first 1,000 fans to enter the game will receive a bobblehead featuring former Timber Rattler Clint Coulter wearing the cow-patterned jersey. The bobblehead and Salute to Cows are courtesy of Milk Source. A 95.9 KISS-FM Thirsty Thursday means 16oz soda, beer, and Arty's Old Fashioned drinks are available for just $2.

Postgame June 3, 2015

Wisconsin Boxscore

Well I'm slightly disappointed in that I was so wiped out Alan Sharkey bookend-ed my nap, I fell asleep after he reached on an error in the 3rd and woke up to him making an fantastic scoop on short hop from Jake Gatewood to end the 8th.

Kodi Mederios topped out at 90 according to the TV crew while I was awake. He was working backwards dropping in a first pitch change or curve into the same spot to each hitter to get ahead, the camera angle always make it hard to read breaking stuff from lefties. It was roughly down the middle, thigh to belt high, but in the strike zone every time he threw it, which was much different than he had pitched in the past, primarily off his slider. His command of his FB and slider weren't as good, sort of still all over the place, but he was very effective once again. Despite the pretty average velocity, no one was getting around him, his pitches mostly end up inside to RH batters and they were inside-outing everything the other way.

David Burkhalter.... wow. I know I've been beating this drum a little bit, but for those that haven't been as fortunate I wish I could adequately describe the difference in his total game from April to June, he's just significantly better in every single aspect. 2 awesome defensive plays and Carlos Leal blocking pitches would be wild pitches definitely helped him out tonight, but he's developing a pretty decent curve, hopefully his velocity can start slowly bumping up as he progresses. This tandem has been outstanding over their last 4 appearances, just great to see from the youngsters.

Dustin DeMuth and Francisco Castillo both had 2 hits a piece.

Terry Steps In To Silence Tortugas

By Jerry Durney / Brevard County Manatees

06/04/2015 12:02 AM ET

Viera, Fla. - All the Brevard County Manatees (23-29) needed from Clint Terry on Wednesday night was a spot start. What they got was a spotlight performance as Terry struck out a career-high 10 over seven innings to earn the Manatees a 5-2 win over the Daytona Tortugas (32-21) at Space Coast Stadium.

The Manatees would take the lead for good in the bottom of the second inning. The rally started on a one-out Taylor Brennan base hit to center. He would steal second with Garrett Cooper at the plate, who then flew out to right. Up came Jose Pena, who appeared to hit into an inning-ending grounder to third but Taylor Sparks' to first went wide, bringing home Brennan to make it 1-0. After a walk to Cameron Garfield, Angel Ortega singled home Pena to double the lead. Omar Garcia then continue the deluge with an RBI single to score Garfield. The inning would come to a close when Chris McFarland popped out to second.

Sparks would atone for his mistake immediately as he led off the top of the third inning with a 415-foot home run to right center, his fourth of the season, to put a dent in the Brevard County lead. Jon Matthews then followed with a double to left. After a Carlton Daal groundout, Matthews was at third but he would go no further as Terry would strike out Phillip and get Junior Arias to ground out.

Daytona's defense would continue to play a large role in the ballgame, this time in the bottom of the fifth inning. Clint Coulter was able to reach on a one-out throwing error by 'Tugas shortstop Alex Blandino. He would move to third on a Victor Roache single to right. Brennan then hit what could've been an inning-ending double play ball but Blandino booted it, allowing Coulter to score.

Terry, who got the start in order to give Jorge Ortega some rest, would retire 12 of the final 13 hitters he faced following the Matthews double and it wasn't until after his departure following the seventh inning that Daytona's offense would muster something of an uprising.

Tyler Spurlin came on in relief to start the top of the eighth and walked Chad Wallach on four pitches. He would move to third on consecutive groundouts by Matthews and Daal. Then, as Spurlin faced Ervin, he threw a wild pitch past Garfield, allowing Wallach to sprint home, making it 4-2.

The 'Tees would get the run back in the bottom half of the inning, starting with Cooper's single to right, which extended his hitting streak to 12 games, the most by a Manatee this season. Pena then reached on another Sparks error but would be erased as Garfield hit into an around the horn double play. The fifth Brevard County run would come on one final Tortuga error as Sparks threw Ortega's chopper wide. The inning ended shortly after as Ortega would be caught stealing at second.

There would be tense moments in the top of the ninth after Spurlin got Arias to ground out and then struck out Blandino. Sebastian Elizalde then mashed a double to the wall in center to give Daytona hope. Wallach followed by punching a single through the hole between first and second as Elizalde would be held up at third. Preston Gainey would be called upon to record the final out, which he did, striking out Robert Ramirez to secure the win.

In addition to Terry's strikeout total and his dominance over his final three plus innings of work, it should be noted he did not walk a batter over his seven innings pitched, which was also a career high for the left-hander. Needless to say, he was efficient, as he threw just 79 pitches, 57 of them for strikes.

On the offensive side, Roache and Ortega recorded multi-hit nights. None of the Tortugas' three pitchers were credited with an earned run.

The Manatees welcome the Dunedin Blue Jays to Space Coast Stadium for a three-game series at 6:35 P.M. on Thursday night. RHP Eric Marzec (1-2, 3.38 ERA) gets the start against RHP Jeremy Gabryszwski (3-4, 3.46 ERA).

Brevard County Box Score

All 5 Manatee runs were unearned. Taylor Sparks now has 25 errors for Daytona on the season. Clint Terry gave up almost nothing. The lone exception was the 3rd inning when Sparks led off with a home run and the next hitter got a double. This happened after Nick Travieso had a 32 pitch 2nd inning so Terry may have been throw off by the long delay temporarily. The Manatees have now won only 3 of 10 against Daytona, a Reds' affiliate. Alex Blandino, who entered the game as the number two batting leader in the FSL, struck out 4 times in this game.
