2015 Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 1-5

Having both college pitchers miss time due to minor injuries this season might actually be a plus as there is less of a need to restrict innings this year. They got all of 8 innings combined out of Bradley and Jungmann in 2011, none out of Jungmann.

Wish list for #90?

Some of the remaining players are going to be hard to sign, especially since it doesn't look like we are going to be able to go over slot, so factoring that in I like the following guys based on scouting blurbs:

RHP Cole Sands (HS)

CF Skye Bolt (CL)

RHP Chandler Day (HS)

C Austin Rei (CL)

3B Trey Cabbage (HS)

Looking at those names, I could have NEVER guessed those kids were born in the mid-late 1990's!

Good list. Trey Cabbage is very intriguing. He has some skill set that Scott Rolen had coming out of high school in Indiana. Rolen was also an athletic basketball player who could move. Obviously Rolen ended up being an all time great third baseman and a borderline hall of famer so I'm not comparing them like that. Rolen's athleticism translated to phenomenal defense at the hot corner. Cabbage is well put together and broke a rim in basketball recently. He can move too. Cabbage bats left too. I'm not a scout, but doing the math he sounds like a really prospect at 90.

I'd really like to get an athletic 3b like that into the system.

Josh Tobias, 3B-2B, University of Florida: Senior, switch-hitter, just 5-9 but has some power and athleticism, very reliable defense, hit .375/.448/.563 with 11 steals. Lacks range for shortstop but can handle second or third, good senior budget choice. Target Territory: Fifth round.

Cabbage is a good athlete. His swing right now is strictly as a pull hitter, he'll need to work on that or hit a ton of ground balls into the shift if he makes it to MLB. More of a raw talent prospect right now

Tobias has a really great glove at 3B. Seen him make some ridiculous plays this season.

Be interesting to see when the Brewers go with a below slot, college senior type pick. I dont think they are going to break the bank with any of the first three picks. Has anything been said about those guys asking price? Seems like they should all be around slot if not under which could allow us to make a Matuella/Nix splash if they hang around until 90.

Dont think these guys are in play at 90 yet but a couple other names i'd love the brewers to get.

Matt Hall LHP Missouri State led the nation in strikeouts, nothing over powering probably topping out at 91 MPH but a very solid pitcher that could move fast through the ranks.

Nolan Kingham younger brother of Pirates pitching prospect Nick Kingham. Has been up to the mid 90s with his fastball. Big bodied type guy the Brewers (and every team) love. Lots of room to fill out. Texas commit but I think he would be a very signable guy given his brother's successful progression. (Up until TJ surgery this season)

Whats the best way to follow the draft today? I'm guessing it's not on TV...does MLB's website have a draftcast?

I didn't even think of this but honestly, why in the heck does the MLB network not have live coverage of the draft? They have one job, cover Major League Baseball and they fail. Idiots.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Just double checked, and it's definitely not on TV today - at least not on MLB Network. Seems odd. I know we wouldn't have heard of most of the guys, but it's still something to follow live and some people would watch. If they really want people to care about it, at least make it accessible. They wouldn't need to talk about everything player, but they could certainly spotlight some. At least for todays rounds.

Do you want to listen to Harold Reynolds talk about 5th-round picks? :laughing

To answer the original question, MLB.com will have coverage including a live stream of the conference call where picks are made plus running commentary from Jim Callis (& John Mayo?).

It's actually much more interesting than the MLB Network coverage, so I'm glad it's only online.

I really think we go under slot or senior sign guy at 90. Theyve had a mild history doing that.

That may not be necessary this year, because the guys they took last night don't appear to be, "over slot" types where they were taken. I could be way off, because I have no idea what it will take to sign those guys, but just looking at who went where, I don't think the Brewers are way over budget at this point.

Trends from recent years may not mean much, with a new man running the draft this year.

Yeah good point. I like the drafted for far and it will get better with a good round 3-5. There are still quite a few guys I was very high on at 40 still there now and hopefully there at 90. Everett and Chalmers are the obvious ones. Then Molnar, Kep Brown and Austen Rei. Also would be ok with Cadyn Grenier

So far, it looks like Montgomery has taken a methodical, "let the draft come to me" approach. He's taken, "Best Player Available" types, without chasing the sexy name, or the really expensive sign.

Spend what you should, where you should, and get talent.

Did anyone catch that quote from Montgomery last night, when he admitted he loves left-handed pitching?

I saw bits and pieces. Maybe the interview is recorded somewhere
