Brewers claim Hernán Pérez off Waivers from Tigers. DFA Elián Herrera

I think people are getting a little carried away with Hernan's hot streak with the Brewers - his combined season line is still a <.600 OPS and he's playing 3B...

Whatever his merits as a possible utility SS/2B, there is literally no way he should be starting a substantial number of games at 3B longterm.

What are you basing that on, a handful of widely scattered MLB AB's before he became a Brewer?

He's just now starting to see steady playing time and over his last 15 games he's hitting .486/.500/.686. Nobody is projecting him to be Mike Schmidt but give the kid a chance. This is a last place team going nowhere and a 24 year old has come out of nowhere and is raking and oh yeah, playing a pretty solid 3B which just happens to be a position of need. In this type of season, you take a long look at a guy like him.

I can't believe that people are still adding his entire year-long stat line together for negative arguments with Perez. He wasn't getting consistent playing time before he got to Milwaukee...and that typically kills a young guys stat line.

Everyone is harping on his minor league stat lines too. He spent time in the Midwest League and Florida State League at 18. He was still just 20 when he was in his 3rd Midwest League season and saw his numbers improve there every year. Compare his first year Midwest League results with Gatewood who many here are very high on. Pretty comparable. At 22, he hit .301 in the Eastern League. First place Detroit thought enough of him to bring him up for 34 games that season.

We are not talking about some career minor leaguer who got on a roll in AAA in his late 20s and found his way to the majors on a last place team. No offense intended for Shane Peterson. Sometimes having the worst record in baseball has its plusses like getting first shot at a diamond in the rough who got caught up in the out of options numbers game. Baseball is a game of opportunity. He wasn't getting it riding the pines in Detroit. He's getting it here and he's taking full advantage.

I like Hernan Perez, I'm hoping he can become a longterm utility guy for us. But penciling him as a longterm starter at 3B (where he played a 2 of 731 games in the minors) because he's had a hot couple weeks doesn't make sense. If you think he'll be able to hit enough to be a major league 3B, then he should be bumping Segura or Gennett instead, because that kind of bat would be much more valuable at SS/2B (which Perez can play).

That's why I went back to his last 1500 ABs (or so) in the minors (post 71). 1500 ABs is generally considered a good sample, and it gets rid of ancient history. What I didn't include was Hernán's Major League numbers during that time. That wasn't a conscious omission; I just didn't think to do it. The sample is small enough that it wouldn't change the math much, though. And since he was at a level that was likely over his head, it's probably just as well to exclude those numbers.

At this point, it makes sense to play him at 3B. He's young and out of options, it's the spot where playing time is readily available, and it doesn't take playing time away from Segura and Gennett. It's premature to project him to play 3B regularly over the long term, though.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.
