Brewers claim Hernán Pérez off Waivers from Tigers. DFA Elián Herrera

I can only think this move makes sense if all of them...Lind, Sardinas, Segura, Ramirez are traded within the next couple of weeks. I feel Jeff Bianchi had a higher ceiling than this guy's production to date.

I was wondering the same thing as far as a trade is concerned. Does this make management think that Segura is more expendable? We now have 4 guys who are either AAA or MLB shortstops. Of course it would be nice if one could play 3B.

I think this falls in the category of; if all things are equal go with the younger guy. While they may not be totally equal, the position the team is in probably shifts the scale enough to see the logic.

On a side note am I the only one who feels bad for guys like Herrera when this happens? I really pull for those fringe guys to make it. At least make it long enough to be considered legit major league players.

I am the same way. Players like Herrera (and in this case specifically Herrera) often become my favorite players

Since this move doesn't seem to make a ton of sense, perhaps the powers that be in baseball operations are just trying to win in random Brewers trivia. By appearing in today's game, Hernan Perez becomes the 6th Perez to ever play for the Brewers, leading all last names.

1. Eddy Perez (2003)

2. Danny Perez (1996)

3. Robert Perez (2001)

4. Juan Perez (2013)

5. Santiago Perez (2000)

6. Hernan Perez (2015)

The Perez sextet has overtaken the five members of Team Reynolds:

1. Ken Reynolds (1973)

2. Mark Reynolds (2014)

3. Archie Reynolds (1972-1973)

4. Bob Reynolds (1971)

5. Tom Reynolds (1972)

Congrats to Hernan and the 2015 Brewers for finding new and original ways to keep me entertained.....

seems like an OK move, would rather have a kid up there than Herrera, this reminds me a little of Wang last season, but we are not wasting a pen spot in a playoff race this time.

This.

Doesn't remind me of Wang at all. Wang was much younger and HAD to be on MLB roster. Perez is 24, and happens to play a position(s) where the Brewers are actually deep. I would rather bring up Rivera, or frankly keep Herrera around in case someone needed a utility guy late in the season. Herrera is capable of getting hot enough to trade for a mediocre prospect at least. I don't know what Perez gives you.

Probably the same as a mediocre prospect would.

Can we dump this Perez clown already? He's useless and makes Herrera look like Jeff Cirillo at the plate (relatively speaking, of course).

Has it been 10 days yet so we can re-purchase Herrera's contract? Or does the 10-day rule not apply when a guy's been DFA'd?

While we need a bench that's solid defensively, it does you little good if your bench guys can't ever get the occasional hit. Herrera's not great but he at least gets something done productively at the plate (meaning he's done enough to make you believe he's actually capable of driving in the occasional run), which is why I was totally on his bandwagon from spring training onward.

it is hard to respect someone that spells schmuck smuck...get your Yiddish straight people. Hernan Perez is very well regarded defensively around baseball and while his o has been abysmal so far, someone whose opinion I value was very very upset his Tigers team lost him...the guy has worth

Agree he has worth. Maybe potential is a better term. I just don't think going with the sample size we have to work with here is enough to judge anything yet. Especially with someone who hasn't seen consistent playing time if a while.

I think with Perez, it's a case where you need to judge your eyes more than what the stats say. I don't know about his time with the Tigers, but I don't see a guy who looks completely overmatched at the plate. He's fanned 4 times in 16 ABs with the Brewers and while he hasn't stung the ball, he's not flailing at it either. His BABIP is a ridiculous .091 so lets give him a bit more of a sample size.

To me he certainly passes the eyeball test. He's a very smooth fielder with all the tools defensively and he's hit okay in the minors despite being young for the levels he's been at. Wang isn't the comparison. Jorge De la Rosa is. Brewers picked him up when he was out of options at a very young age and he showed flashes of ability but certainly would have been better off in the minors. When you are out of contention, you can take fliers on guys like this. When the time comes for Ramirez to be benched/dealt away, give Perez a long look at 3B, then make a determination in the offseason if he's worth keeping.

I just see the guy as filler. .660 OPS in the minor leagues, with an ISO below .100 .....

He may be a slick fielder, but he's got to be Omar Vizquel to make up for what he can't do at the plate.

I think scouts see more than that which is why he made it to the big leagues so young. We're not talking about a little guy. He's listed at a solid 6'1" 185. He hit .301/.325/.423 in the Eastern League at 22 and has hit .288/.334/.397 in AAA stints at 22 and 23. I also think they project him as a 15 HR guy. In the back of their minds, Brewers see a 3B.

He's been slow to develop offensively but it's tough now not getting consistent AB's I'm convinced the Brewers believe they could not get him through waivers to send him down. Whether it takes a month or two at the end of a brutal season to just let him play, or another season of winter ball, what's the downside at this point?

At this point, the current season is probably a total loss. So the upside of keeping him on the roster to give him an audition is certainly better than exposing him to waivers in an attempt to send him down to the minors. If/when they find a trade partner for Aramis Ramirez (who I hope finds his way on to a contendor in his final season), that will open up even more playing time for all of the young guys that have been mentioned so far.

I'm okay with them using him as a defensive replacement because he's got amazing skills defensively. Now if he figures out how to hit? Well now we have something.

I just think he would clear waivers considering he has no options and has played rather poorly. He isn't going to get better offensively sitting on the bench and being a defensive replacement late in games. He could play every day in AAA. If the Brewers did trade Ramirez I would be fine with him playing basically every day at third since it doesn't really matter and it was be his audition for a 40 man spot in the off season.

Can't believe I am saying this but Perez has been passing the eye test lately both offensively and defensively. Hopefully Ramirez is gone soon so that the Brewers can play him and Dominguez for the remainder of the season.

I agree. Lately he's been pretty fun to watch. Goes the opposite way with it and all. It would be nice to dump Aram and let these guys have a few month try out.
