Little known fact:

When affiliate assignments were made prior to the 2013 season, Tyler Cravy was going to be sent to Wisconsin after having already spent a full year and a half there, basically from a numbers crunch, something we see most every year.

Let's just say that through his own "persuasive efforts", he fought for (nothing wrong with that) and won literally a last-minute 25th-man addition to the Brevard County roster instead.

And on June 2nd, 2015, he's starting against the Cardinals in Busch Stadium.

Regardless of the outcome tonight and beyond, congratulations young man, these are the kind of moments we Link Report readers live vocariously for.

Shane Peterson not in the lineup tonight. Already on his way to STL?

Edit: With an early game tomorrow in STL, he would have to be. No direct flight from Colorado Springs to St. Louis, would be hard to fly in the morning, connect somewhere (prolly Denver), move up a time zone and get to the ballpark early for BP, meet the team, etc.

Final: DSL Rangers #2 Squad 10, DSL Brewers 5

DSL Brewers Box Score

Cerveceritos fall to 0-3; 1st win for this Rangers club. Game was tied 4-4 through five innings.

Rookie SS Ignacio Otano, DH'ing in the leadoff spot in this one, singled four times in five at bats and scored two runs, but also took himself out of play twice with a caught stealing and a pickoff. Actual SS Franly Mallen was 3-for-5 (R, RBI). Former three-year DSL Tigers 3B Yerison Pena doubled twice and drove in four. Pena, the only switch-hitter on the club, will turn 24 in July, and I'll try and avoid reminding everyone of that each time he has a big game.

DSL Brewers Game Log

On the mound, 3rd year LH Boanerges Nova got the start, followed up by a former Cardinal, a former Diamondback, and another former Cardinal.

Now that first former Cardinal, RHP Joaquin De La Cruz, made his pro pitching debut in this game; formerly a corner infielder.

By Marty James, Napa Valley Register

Tyler Cravy, a former Napa Valley College baseball star, will make his major league pitching debut when he starts Tuesday for the Milwaukee Brewers in a game against St. Louis at Busch Stadium.

“It’s great to see the transformation from a kid that was a thrower with a real good arm who now has learned how to pitch, and has definitely taken it to the next level,” said Warren Brusstar, Napa Valley’s pitching coach, who spent nine years in the major leagues.

“Now he’s gotten to the highest level you can get to. I can’t wait to see him pitch.”

Maintaining his composure and being able to command the ball will be key for Cravy, 25, who has been in in the minor leagues for the last seven years, said Brusstar, a member of the 1980 World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies.

“The biggest thing is being in a big ballpark with 50,000 people there and making your major league debut,” said Brusstar. “There will be a lot of nerves. But once he settles in and gets rolling, he’ll be all right.

“If he hits his spots he’ll be fine. Once he gets the first guy out, then he’ll settle in and realize that he belongs there.”

Cravy has pitched at all levels of minor league ball. He has a 33-26 record and 3.71 ERA in 131 games, with 60 starts over that time.

He was a non-roster invitee to the Brewers spring training camp, which began in February at the organization’s facility in Maryvale, Arizona.

“It seems like a short time ago he was pitching for us and dominating at our level,” said Bob Freschi, Napa Valley’s head coach. “We’re just all very proud of Tyler.”

Cravy pitched for three teams in the Brewers’ minor league system last year. He was a combined 8-2 with a 1.63 ERA in 17 games, 15 of which were starts.

Last year, he was the starting pitcher for the North Division in the Double-A Southern League All-Star Game. He was then promoted to Triple-A Nashville, Tennessee, of the Pacific Coast League.

Cravy returned to the Bay Area in December after spending six weeks pitching for Bravos de Margarita in the Venezuela Winter League. He made six starts.

“It will be fun to watch him tonight,” said Freschi. “He can throw and every year he’s made that step up.

“He’s a major leaguer tonight and I know he’s going to go out there and compete and have a good time. It’s one pitch at a time and one game and see where it leads him. I’m sure he has a good game plan.”

Cravy will be opposed Tuesday by Lance Lynn. St. Louis leads the National League’s Central Division with Milwaukee in last place.

“He’s kind of been an under-the-radar guy who’s kept performing,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said of Cravy on MLB.com. “He does it with deception.”

Cravy is a Hogan High School-Vallejo graduate who was a team leader for Napa Valley. He also played shortstop and hit third in the order.

“I told (Freschi) when we had him, ‘This kid is going to pitch in the big leagues someday, because he’s got an ideal pitching body. He’s long and lean. He fits right in,’ ” said Brusstar.

“He never really said much. But he was the real leader of our ball club. He did it by example. You marveled at the things that he did.

“He’s put the work in. Every year he was getting bigger and bigger. He’s filled out and has become a man now.”

Tortugas improve to 14-3 in one-run games

3-2 win over Brevard County highlighted by Stephens' strong start

By Tyler Murray / Daytona Tortugas

06/03/2015 12:40 AM ET

Daytona Beach, FL - The Tortugas (32-20) wrapped up their four-game homestand with a 3-2 win over the Brevard County Manatees (22-29) on Wednesday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. They've won six of their last eight games and estbalished a six-game lead in the Florida State League North Division with 18 games left in the first half.

Brevard County came out swinging after a 1:25 delayed start, putting the game's first two men in scoring position with a single from Omar Garcia and a double by Chris McFarland. Clint Coulter brought home Garcia with a groundout to third. RHP Jackson Stephens (W, 4-2) struck out Victor Roache and then induced an inning-ending groundout to limit the damage.

Daytona evened the score in the second, loading the bases with two singles and a walk. RF Jeff Gelalich brought home 3B Robert Ramirez from third with a 4-6-3 double play, and it was 1-1.

As Stephens held down Brevard County's offense (he allowed just one hit from the second through the fifth inning), Daytona went to work at the plate. The Tortugas stranded the bases loaded in the fourth inning, but plated a pair in the fifth.

CF Junior Arias started the decisive frame with a single to center, and quickly stole his 11th base of the season. SS Alex Blandino followed with a liner to left to bring home Arias and give Daytona its first lead, 2-1. Later in the fifth, Blandino moved up on a wild pitch and scored on a single from Ramirez to make it 3-1. It was Ramirez' 10th RBI in his last seven games. Blandino's hit was his second of the night, comprising his fifth multi-hit game in the past week.

Javier Salas (L, 4-4) was then removed in favor of Mark Williams, who recorded the final two outs in the inning.

Stephens finished after six frames with two runs allowed on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts. RHP Alejandro Chacin (H, 2) took over in the seventh, and retired the final six batters he faced after allowing a leadoff single. He struck out the side in the eighth.

RHP El'Hajj Muhammad (S, 6) recorded a perfect ninth inning for his fifth save in the last week. RHP Nick Travieso gets the start on Wednesday in Brevard County, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

Brevard County Box Score

Manatee write-up not available yet. Javi Salas 4 1/3 innings with 7 H and 3 BB not a good outing. Mark Williams was excellent however in relief: 3 1/3 innings, 1 H, 0 BB, 6 K. Garrett Cooper was 2-4 with a 2B to continue his hot hitting. Other than those 2 hits and the two mentioned above to start the game, the Manatees managed only 1 other hit in the game.

Jorge Lopez struck out eight batters for the third time this season, matching again a career high (Benton Reed Photography)

BIRMINGHAM, AL - The Shuckers' rebounded after suffering their worst loss of the season on Monday, taking down the Birmingham Barons, 4-3, on Tuesday night at Regions Field. Starter Jorge Lopez was dominant in his 10th start of the year, facing just one over the minimum in seven shutout innings. The Brewers' 15th-ranked prospect by Baseball America faced the minimum through six before stranding Chris Curley at second in the seventh. The 6'4" righty tied a career high in strikeouts with eight and allowed just three hits over his seven innings of work. Kyle Wren drove in three of the four runs including the go-ahead and eventual winning run in the top of the ninth.

Biloxi carried a 3-0 lead into the eighth as Lopez turned it over to the bullpen. The Barons rallied for three runs and four hits as Mike Strong surrendered each of the runs before being relieved by Austin Ross (W, 3-1, 2 H, BB, 3 SO) The former LSU Tiger took over with the bases loaded and a 3-1 game, allowing two inherited runners to score before getting the Shuckers out of the inning, but in a 3-3 deadlock.

The Shuckers pulled back ahead in the top of the ninth against reliever Raul Fernandez. Nathan Orf (1x3, 2 R, BB) led off the frame with a single and moved to third on a hit-and-run single by Nick Shaw (1x2, BB) to place runners at the corners. Wren (2x4, 3 RBI) shot a grounder through the left side to give Biloxi a 4-3 lead.

Ross took the mound again in the ninth and gave up a leadoff single to Danny Hayes, who moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Adrian Nieto. Back-to-back strikeouts to Joey DeMichele and Jeremy Farrell ended Birmingham's threat and ended the game.

Biloxi's offense continued to scuffle on Tuesday, but broke through in the fourth after a sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Taylor Green (0x3, RBI) brought in Nick Ramirez (1x4, R). The play resulted off of a collision in center field by Barons' centerfielder Jacob May and shortstop Tim Anderson. May laid on the ground for several minutes before getting to his feet and being carried off the field by his teammates.

The Shuckers put up their second run in the fifth on an RBI single by Wren to bring home Adam Weisenburger (1x3, R, BB). Wren was at it again in the seventh with a squeeze bunt to plate Orf to give Biloxi a 3-0 lead.

With the win and two M-Braves' victories on Tuesday night, the lead in the South Division is 2.5 games with 18 to play in the half and the magic number for a clinch is 17.

Biloxi will try to pull ahead in the five-game series on Wednesday. RHP Brooks Hall (4-3, 3.89) will take the bump for the Shuckers, while it has yet to be determined who will start for the Barons. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 AM, with coverage beginning at 10:45 on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Fans can also listen to the game using the TuneIn Radio app or by going to www.biloxishuckers.com.

Biloxi Box Score

Six groundouts, one flyout in one of the more dominant pitching lines we've seen this season - what an effort, Jorge Lopez; RF Michael Reed walked three times to lift his 2015 OBP to .415 (career .381); bottom of the order really stepped up on a night when Tyrone Taylor and Orlando Arcia were a combined 0-for-9...

Lopez delivers bounceback performance

Brewers righty allows three hits in seven shutout frames for Shuckers

By Alex Kraft / MiLB.com

Even though he didn't officially get a victory, Jorge Lopez felt like a winner after Tuesday's start.

The Brewers' No. 12 prospect allowed three hits over seven scoreless innings in the Double-A Biloxi Shuckers' 4-3 win over the Birmingham Barons. The right-hander tied a career high with eight strikeouts and did not issue a walk.

"The best thing was my fastball command," said Lopez, who sports a 3-2 record. "I trusted my fastball and my curveball as my secondary pitch."

The 22-year-old was in need of a strong rebound outing after allowing nine hits and six runs in only four innings in his previous start against the Chattanooga Lookouts on May 27.

"Last time, I didn't have the command I had today," the Puerto Rico native said. "I was behind in the count a lot then. That was different today. I just tried to stay ahead in the count and throw quality pitches.

"I felt good and in charge. I wanted to keep my head up and not be down out there."

The Caguas Military Academy product faced only one batter over the minimum. Barons first baseman Danny Hayes singled in the bottom of the second, but Lopez picked off Hayes at second. The righty also got Adrian Nieto to ground into a double play after Brian Fletcher singled to lead off the bottom of the fifth.

The top Puerto Rican player in the 2011 Draft class, Lopez said this start definitely ranks among his best performances of the season and gives him something to build on going into his next start.

"Yeah, a hundred percent," he said. "If I go like this every outing, I'm sure I'll be good."

The 2011 second-rounder lowered his ERA to 3.38 and increased his strikeout total to 51, tied for ninth among Southern League pitchers.

Lopez was unable to secure his fourth victory when the Barons tied the game with three runs in the eighth against relievers Mike Strong (2-0) and Austin Ross (3-1). But Milwaukee's No. 17 prospect Kyle Wren, who plated three runs, delivered a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the ninth.

"It was a good feeling," said Lopez of the comeback. "I think we have a really good team and they make the approach every time where they always have their heads up. They never get down, they just keep on fighting and that's one of the things we do well."

Ross (3-1) pitched a scoreless ninth to earn a blown save and the win.

Chicago's No. 2 prospect Tim Anderson, who started the game at shortstop, and No. 14 Jacob May left the game in the top of the fourth after the pair collided in the outfield on a play. Anderson was replaced by Keenyn Walker, who singled home a run during the Barons' rally. Center fielder May was replaced by Chris Curley, whose bases-loaded walk tied the game in the eighth.
