Brewers-Cardinals Preview

ESPN Staff

Although Matt Holliday is reaching base at a historic pace, the St. Louis Cardinals are having trouble delivering a timely hit.

As the outfielder closes in on the franchise's record on-base streak, the Cardinals will try to avoid losing consecutive home games for only the second time Tuesday night against the Milwaukee Brewers.

After missing one start due to the flu, Holliday singled and walked in Monday's 1-0 loss to extend his NL record by reaching base in a 45th straight game to open the season. Derek Jeter set the MLB mark of 53 games in 1999.

The six-time All-Star can now tie Ray Sanders (1944), Solly Hemus (1953) and Albert Pujols (2001) for St. Louis' fourth-best on-base streak since 1914 at 48 dating to last season. Stan Musial still holds the team record of 55, set in 1943.

Holliday appears poised to continue his run, reaching base in 24 consecutive home games versus Milwaukee (18-34).

His eighth-inning single put runners on first and third with one out Monday, but Jhonny Peralta and Yadier Molina struck out against Jeremy Jeffress to end the threat.

The Cardinals went 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position, leaving them 6 for 37 (.162) in those spots while totaling 11 runs over their last five games. They've lost back-to-back games only once at Busch Stadium -- May 15-16 against Detroit.

"We're going a good job of putting ourselves in those situations -- that's all you can ask for," outfielder Jason Heyward said.

St. Louis (33-18) certainly hasn't done much to help Lance Lynn (3-4, 3.41 ERA), who ranks near the bottom of the NL with a 2.82 run-support average. Lynn, though, hasn't been as sharp since allowing one run in winning two straight starts in mid-May.

The right-hander gave up five runs and 10 hits in six innings in a 5-0 loss at Kansas City on May 22, before yielding three runs and issuing four walks over six on Wednesday. He did not get a decision in that 4-3 home win over Arizona.

Lynn had been 4-0 with a 1.49 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 42 1/3 innings over his previous seven outings versus Milwaukee before surrendering a season-high six runs and 10 hits over five innings in a 6-3 road loss April 26.

He's 1-0 with a 1.96 ERA in his last four home meetings after allowing one run over five innings in a 4-2 victory April 15.

Adam Lind hit a two-run homer in Milwaukee's victory, but that's his only hit in eight at-bats in the matchup. Lind is expected to return to the lineup after being limited to pinch-hit duty the past two games due to a sore back.

Gerardo Parra should be pleased to see Lynn since he's 11 for 22 with two homers, three triples and four doubles off him. However, Carlos Gomez is 3 for 22 with 12 strikeouts and Aramis Ramirez is 3 for 26.

The Brewers are batting a major league-worst .227 after Gomez had two of the team's six hits and the lone RBI on Monday.

Still, they're seeking a season high-tying third straight win as right-hander Tyler Cravy makes his debut. Cravy, who was 5-4 with a 4.04 ERA in nine starts at Triple-A Colorado Springs, got the call because Matt Garza was used in Sunday's 17-inning win.

"We need to keep it up, and hopefully, we can do it again tomorrow," Monday's winning pitcher Mike Fiers said.

Here's Brad's feature on Cravy, in honor of his call to the bigs. Some excellent context for those unfamiliar with Tyler --

Tyler Cravy was 5-4 with a 4.04 ERA in nine starts for Triple-A Colorado Springs this season.

Profile: With a 17 inning game on Sunday necessitating some additional pitching help at the the major league level, the Brewers promoted Tyler Cravy to Milwaukee, returning pitcher Tyler Wagner to the minor leagues. Not even in the starting rotation when Double-A Huntsville opened the 2014 season, Cravy made a name for himself with an outstanding start to his year before injury shut him down for most of the second half of 2014.

Drafted in the 17th round in 2009, Cravy bounced between the rotation and the bullpen early on in his career, spending 2009 in Maryvale and 2010 at Helena. He split the 2011 season between Helena and Wisconsin and returned to Wisconsin in 2012, where he posted a 3.38 earned run average in 24 relief appearances. Cravy advanced to Brevard County in 2013 and enjoyed a successful season in the Florida State League, appearing in 25 games and making nine starts. He finished the season with a record of 4-2 and a 2.04 ERA and was selected to play in the Arizona Fall League. In ten games with the Surprise Saguaros, Cravy allowed just five earned runs striking out 16 batters in 16 1/3 innings of work and tossing two scoreless frames in the AFL Championship game.

After a promotion to Double-A Huntsville to begin 2014, Cravy found himself in the bullpen to start the season. When injuries opened up a spot in the Stars rotation, Cravy grabbed it and never looked back, going 8-1 with a 1.72 ERA and earning the starting nod in the Southern League’s All-Star game. A move to Triple-A Nashville followed, but Cravy suffered a strained oblique muscle in his first start for the Sounds and was sidelined for about two months. He returned to make a pair of rehab appearances in late August in Maryvale to finish out his season and earned a spot in big league camp this spring as a non-roster invitee with Milwaukee. Cravy was sent to Triple-A Colorad Springs in March and made nine starts for the Sky Sox, going 5-4 with a 4.04 ERA.

Strengths: Cravy features a low 90’s fastball with good sink to it as well as a slider and changeup. He mixes up his pitches well and pitches with a plan, doing a good job of keeping the ball down in the strike zone. Cravy has shown steady improvement from year-to-year and his versatility provides the Brewers with options as a starter or as a long man out of the pen.

Weaknesses: Cravy’s not overpowering, but he’s not a soft tosser by any means. His strikeout numbers were better as a reliever than as a starter and while he will give you some innings, he hasn’t worked all that deep in to games, averaging slightly over five innings per start this season. In limited opportunities with the bat, Cravy hasn’t done much, posting a .136 batting average during his minor league career.

Future: The 25-year-old righty has flown under the radar for most of his minor league career, but he’s put his name in the conversation for a rotation spot long-term. Even if he can’t crack the rotation or struggles as a starter, Cravy could still be a valuable part of future Brewers teams as a bullpen arm, working as a long man and/or spot starter.

a 5-4 record with a 4.04 ERA in nine starts for Triple-A is pretty impressive considering how bad they've been. Excited to listen to tonight's game after watching game of thrones.

Is there a typo in there? Or am I missing something?

I think the Jeter one is to open the season, because it also says "extend his NL record" in there too. So his current streak and Jeters are just for opening a season and the other ones are just anywhere streaks.

Remember what Yoda said:

"Cubs lead to Cardinals. Cardinals lead to dislike. Dislike leads to hate. Hate leads to constipation."

I have a feeling whatever team ends up with Gomez is going to be really dissapointed if they give up a haul of players.

His aggressiveness is getting over the top, his defense isn't all that special anymore, stolen base efficiency trending downwads.

I realize that Lucroy was injured for a large part of the season, but now that he is back, he needs to start hitting, his numbers are horrific.

He has played in like 13 games and sports a .113 BABIP when he has consistently been over .300 in his career. Give the guy some time.

I saw that coming and I figured all three would be done for the season.

Not watching the game. What's this in reference to?

Pop-up in foul territory (3rd base side) and Ramirez, Segura, and Parra were coming in at the same time and obviously weren't communicating. They all three collided (not super violent), but Segura fell into the stands and Parra was in the fetal position. It looked ugly but was - relatively speaking - tame.

Edit - no one was hurt.
