From Saturday's Sky Sox game --

 

Josh Roenicke (2-2, 5.04) would follow the entertaining at-bat with an equally fun inning-ending play in the Sacramento third. With consecutive singles giving the River Cats runners on first and second with one out, Roenicke would astutely step off the rubber to look the going runners back before firing the ball to Pete Orr at third in hopes of catching former Brewers farmhand Darren Ford stealing. Ford would eventually be tagged out by Yadiel Rivera who, in a heads-up play, threw to second to nab former big league Brewer Casey McGehee trying to advance on the play, ending the frame with a rare 1-5-6-4 double play.

Series finale with Lookouts cancelled by storms

Shuckers head to Birmingham to open five-game series Monday

CHATTANOOGA, TN - The scheduled series finale between the Shuckers and Chattanooga Lookouts on Sunday afternoon has been cancelled due to rain. The game will not be made up as the two clubs will not meet again in the first half of the season. The Chattanooga downtown area was struck by heavy storms, which included hail, just prior to game time.

The Shuckers leave Chattanooga taking three of four in the shortened series, as well as with the best record in the Southern League at 30-19. The Shuckers currently hold a three game lead in the South Division standings with 20 games remaining in the half. Biloxi completes the month of May with a 16-12 record. The Shuckers also lead the league in batting average (.273), on-base percentage (.348), stolen bases (54) and fielding percentage (.987). Shortstop Orlando Arcia leads the league in hits (62), batting (.341) and doubles (17).

 

Biloxi travels to Birmingham to begin a five-game series at Regions Field on Monday, with first pitch of game one at 7:05 PM. LHP Hobbs Johnson will start the series opener for Biloxi and be opposite RHP Myles Jaye (2-3, 4.23) for the Barons.

There were 19 Dominican Summer League games scheduled Saturday.

 

Three were rained out, two others began but ended up suspended, and 13 were played to completion.

 

One other game was not reported on at all.

 

You guessed it .

 

The league is idle as usual for a Sunday, so we'll keep an eye out to see if there is an update over the remainder of the weekend.

 

The umpires finally called this one after a 32-hour rain delay (never got underway).

 

Looks like June 20th will be a makeup game as part of a twinbill.

It may take the Brewers that long to finish their game. Wang was awful in the 1st but gave up next to nothing the rest of his outing and came up with the win. Hopefully, this will start a good run for him. You need a microscope to find Preston Gainey's ERA right now. 'Tees win 8-3. Details later.

Rattlers fall late to Beloit

Snappers top Wisconsin 4-1

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Devin Williams tossed five shutout innings for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Sunday afternoon and left with a 1-0 lead. But, the Beloit Snappers rallied for four runs in the final three innings to defeat Wisconsin 4-1 at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

 

Wisconsin (15-36) took the lead in the bottom of the third inning. Sthervin Matos drew a walk and stole second. Tucker Neuhaus doubled on a fly ball to the corner in left. Matos went back to second to tag in case the ball was caught and could only reach third base when the ball dropped. Elvis Rubio sent a grounder to short that allowed Matos to score for a 1-0 lead.

 

Williams walked the leadoff batter to start the game, but retired the next six batters he faced. The Brewers pitching prospect walked the leadoff batter in the third, but got a double play and a strikeout to end the inning. He gave up a one out single in the fourth inning, but retired the final five batters he faced. Williams struck out seven to match his single-game high as a professional and left the game with a 1-0 lead after five innings.

 

Beloit (21-30) tied the game in the top of the seventh inning. Max Kuhn, who hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning of Saturday's game, was up with two outs and none on against reliever Angel Ventura and hit a high fly to left that carried over the wall to tie the game 1-1.

 

Ventura struck out James Harris with one out in the top of the eighth inning, but the ball skipped to the backstop to allow Harris to reach. Ventura walked the next hitter before getting the second out. But, Sandber Pimetel grounded a single to center to send Harris home with the go-ahead run.

 

The Snappers got insurance in the top of the ninth. Reliever Gian Rizzo hit the first batter of the frame. Then, Robert Martinez cracked a two-run home run and the Snappers were up 4-1.

 

The Timber Rattlers had opportunities early as Beloit starting pitcher Daniel Gossett walked six in the first three innings, but they could only cash in the walk to Matos.

 

Wisconsin's offense went quiet after a one out single by Jake Gatewood in the bottom of the sixth inning. Three Beloit relievers combined to retire the final eleven Wisconsin batters in the game.

 

The final game of the series is Monday afternoon. Cy Sneed (2-6, 2.4) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Beloit has named Brett Graves (4-0, 4.94) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 12:05pm.

Well at least Devin Williams was fantastic, I toyed with the idea of heading down and putting the gun on him today but decided against it at the last minute and then didn't get to listen to the game either. Now I regret both!

 

Tucker Neuhaus has been steady yet unspectacular all year... sound at the plate but has work to do in the field where he's now playing 2B almost exclusively.

 

I've been trying to focus on the positives with this club, as in not continually harping on the SOs or individual batting lines, but this was Jake Gatewood's first multi-hit game since he recorded 5 hits over 2 days way back on 4/15 and 4/16.

I have a feeling that in two weeks Gatewood will be in Helena and Neuhaus will be playing SS (barring a 1st/2nd round draft pick of a college SS).

 

Hopefully today is the start of Coulter getting back on track. And did Gainey pick up a few MPH moving to the pen? Small sample, but pretty impressive so far.

I highly doubt Neuhaus sees time at SS, he wasn't good as a 3B in his limited time there. He could maybe play passable SS in Rookie ball but he's not a professional SS. Defensively 2B seems to suite him, maybe because he has more time on that side of the field.

Offense Leads Manatees to 8-3 Victory

Clint Coulter has Three Hits In Win

Viera, Fla. - For a second straight night, it was the offense of the Brevard County Manatees (22-27) that dominated against the Lakeland Flying Tigers (23-26) as Brevard County recorded an 8-3 win on Sunday night at Space Coast Stadium.

 

After Lakeland scored three runs in the top of the first against Wei-Chung Wang (3-2, 6.16 ERA), the Manatees scored the next eight runs of the ballgame. Dominic Ficociello recorded an RBI double and Francisco Martinez drove home a pair with a double in the first to give the Flying Tigers an early three-run cushion.

 

The Brevard County offense responded immediately in the bottom of the first against Ryan Longstreth (2-4, 3.48 ERA). With one out, Jonathan Lucroy drew a walk. Clint Coulter then doubled down the right field line to move Lucroy to third. Victor Roache lined a screaming one-hopper into the diving glove of the shortstop David Gonzalez. Gonzalez didn't have a play as Lucroy scored, Coulter moved to third and Roache reached with an RBI infield single. A Taylor Brennan walk loaded the bases. The next batter, Garrett Cooper, recorded an RBI on a sacrifice fly to right field. Coulter scored and Roache moved to third on the play. Rafael Neda then walked to load the bases for Angel Ortega. He hit a hard grounder to first that couldn't be handled by Bobby Borchering. Borchering deflected the ball into shallow right field and was credited with an error. Both Roache and Brennan scored to give the Manatees a 4-3 lead.

 

Wang settled in after the first. He did not allow a run over the next five innings. Overall, Wang surrendered three runs on five hits and two walks. He fanned six.

 

On the other side, the Brevard County offense continued to impress. In the bottom of the fourth, Lucroy started a threat with a one-out walk. Coulter then singled to center. Roache hit another infield single to load the bases and to end Longstreth's night. Brennan Smith was summoned from the bullpen. Smith hit Brennan with a pitch to force in Lucroy. Cooper stepped up and lined a two-run double just fair down the first base line. Both Coulter and Roache scored to extend the Brevard County lead to four.

 

Longstreth was hit with the loss after his worst outing of the season. He allowed seven runs - five earned - on six hits. He walked four and struck out one.

 

Brevard County tacked on an insurance run in the sixth thanks to an RBI single by Neda.

 

Preston Gainey came on in relief to start the seventh. He retired the first eight men he faced before he ran into some trouble with two outs in the ninth. After a single and two walks loaded the bases, Gainey was removed in favor of Tyler Spurlin. On the first pitch of the at-bat, Spurlin induced a groundout by Jiwan James to end the game. Spurlin recorded his first save of the season. Gainey lowered his ERA to 0.40 on the season after 2.2 scoreless frames.

 

Brevard County will turn to RHP Brandon Woodruff (1-2, 4.20 ERA) as they go for the sweep tomorrow. LHP Matt Crouse (1-1, 0.87 ERA) will make a spot start for Lakeland. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

Lucroy, Coulter, Roache and Brennan all scored twice. Garrett Cooper with 3 RBI's. I don't remember a speed rating on Preston Gainey in this game but he has been pretty consistently around 94 this year in previous outings. He seemed to run out of gas in the 9th when he walked a couple of guys but that would have been three innnings work. Let's hope Wei-Chung Wang figured something out here. It would be nice if he would string together some quality starts.

 

Manatees won all four games with Lucroy. It's nice to have another bat in there. Listen to the Eric Marzec pregame interview when MH links it later. He is very complimentary of Lucroy and the game he called in Marzec's start.

No Pitcher Safe In Sox 10-5 Loss To River Cats

The Sky Sox Could Not Contain Sacramento's Offense, Allowing 15 Hits and 7 Walks In an Ugly Loss

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - The River Cats offense was relentless on Sunday afternoon, pounding out 15 base-hits en route to a 10-5 win over the Sox before a crowd of 3,611 at Security Service Field.

 

Sacramento would get to Sox starter Drew Gagnon (1-7, 7.91) early and often, scoring in four consecutive innings to hang the right-hander with five earned runs on nine hits and a walk over five innings of work. Gagnon would strike out two along the way.

 

After working a scoreless first, Gagnon would toss a scoreless first before Jarrett Parker took him deep in the second, blasting his 10th long ball of the season an estimated 440 feet over the right-field fence. Parker would add another solo shot, his 11th, off of Gagnon in the fifth, which would ultimately be the starter's final frame. The first Parker homer would open the flood gates for Sacramento's offense as they would add one run in each of the next three frames.

 

The Sox would chip away at the River Cats leads most of the afternoon with runs in the second, fourth, sixth and eighth, however the bullpen could not keep the team in it as Jim Henderson, Michael Kirkman and Nick Additon would combine to allow five runs of their own over the final four innings of the ballgame. Kirkman would have the roughest bullpen outing, allowing three runs in his 1.1 innings on three hits and three walks while striking out three.

 

River Cats righty Robert Coello (6-3, 3.50) pitched effectively and would do just enough in his time on the mound to maintain his team's lead. The starter tossed seven innings of four-run ball (three of the runs being earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out four.

 

Former Brewer Casey McGehee record his first home run as a member of the River Cats, launching a 414 foot shot just inside the left field foul pole off of Henderson in the seventh.

 

Matt Clark, Nevin Ashley and Matt Long, the Sox 4-5-6 hitters, each collected multi-hit games in Colorado Springs' nine-hit performance with Clark and Ashley scoring two runs apiece. Clark, Long, Yadiel Rivera and Pete Orr notched the team's RBIs as Rivera extended his Sox season-high hitting streak to 11 games with a fourth inning single.

 

Michael Broadway would record the lone scoreless outing in the slugfest as he retired the Sox side in order in the bottom of the ninth, locking down the River Cats' second straight win after having lost 10 consecutive games coming into Saturday night's contest.

 

With the loss, Colorado Springs falls to 19-30 on the season while Sacramento improves to 23-28.

 

The Sox are back at it tomorrow in the series-finale against this same River Cats squad. Tyler Cravy (5-4, 4.04) was scheduled to lead his team to a series-split against Sacramento right-hander and former Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy (0-1, 11.57) as he works his way back from injury. However, the starter is now TBD as Cravy earned his first big league call-up on Monday. First pitch is scheduled for 12:35 PM MDT (1:35 Central) for a Monday matinee at Security Service Field.
