Eric Marzec went 6 shutout innings giving up only 3 hits and 1 walk. Yet he had thrown more balls before the end of the 3rd than Jorge Ortega had in the entire 9 inning start yesterday. Amazing.

Rattlers rally to beat Snappers

Wisconsin scores two in 7th for 5-3 win

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to defeat the Beloit Snappers 5-3 on Saturday at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Carlos Leal had three hits and drove in the go-ahead run for the Rattlers. The game was the conclusion of a game that was suspended on Friday night.

 

Before rain halted play on Friday night, the game was tied 3-3 in the top of the sixth inning with two outs.

 

Beloit (19-30) scored three runs in the first inning against Wisconsin starter Milton Gomez, two coming in on a two-out, two-run double by Joe Brizuela.

 

The Rattlers (15-34) tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the second and another in the bottom of the fourth. Gregory Munoz drove in a run in the second and the tying run in the fourth.

 

Luis Ortega took over for Milton Gomez on the mound for the Rattlers when the game restarted and walked Brizuela and Max Kuhn before getting the final out of the sixth.

 

Heath Fillmyer relieved for Beloit to start the bottom of the sixth inning and gave up a one-out single to Tucker Neuhaus, but retired the next two batters to send the game to the seventh inning still tied.

 

Wisconsin took the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. Brandon Diaz started the rally with a one out walk. Francisco Castillo followed with a single to put runners on first and second. Leal was next and he grounded a single into right to score Diaz and send Castillo around to third base. Sthervin Matos knocked in Castillo with a sacrifice fly to pad Wisconsin's lead.

 

Ortega got the first out of the top of the ninth inning, but left the game after walking Kuhn. Luke Curtis took over and got the second out with a strikeout, but walked pinch hitter Shawn Duinkirk to put the tying runs on base. Curtis closed out the game by striking out James Harris.

 

Ortega pitched 2-2/3 scoreless innings and earned his first win of the season. Curtis picked up his first save of the season.

Wisconsin had been 2-26 coming into this game when the opponent scored first (thanks Chris), and I believe this is the biggest deficit the Rattlers have overcome all year.

 

The pitching wasn't great after the break but it was good enough to throw up zeros and secure the victory.

 

Carlos Leal keeps his surprising season moving forward, if he qualified he would be tied for the 7th best batting average...

Snappers get 3-run HR in 8th inning to top Wisconsin

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Max Kuhn hit a three-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to give the Beloit Snappers a 6-4 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in Saturday's Midwest League game at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

 

For the second game in a row, Beloit (20-30) took an early 3-0 lead. The Snappers had runners at the corners with two outs in the top of the second inning when Argenis Raga's grounder to short was misplayed for an error to allow a run to score and the inning to continue. Joe Bennie followed with a double to left that drove in two runs for the 3-0 lead.

 

For the second game in a row, Wisconsin (15-35) chipped away at that lead and eventually took the lead.

 

Brandon Diaz singled with one out in the third and took second on a wild pitch. Francisco Castillo followed with a single to drive in Diaz.

 

In the fourth, Sthervin Matos singled to start the frame. Tucker Neuhaus ripped a double to right and Matos scored to cut the deficit to a run.

 

The Timber Rattlers tied the game in the sixth inning. Matos drew a leadoff walk to chase Beloit starting pitcher Junior Mendez from the game. Left-handed reliever Cody Stull took over and got the next two outs and Matos was still at first base. Then, Alan Sharkey lined a 1-0 pitch off the glove of first baseman Sandber Pimentel. The ball trickled into foul territory down the right field line as Matos streaked around the bases and ran through a stop sign by manager and third base coach Matt Erickson. Matos just beat Pimentel's relay throw to the plate to tie the game.

 

Diaz tripled to start the seventh inning and scored on Dustin DeMuth's RBI grounder to give the Rattlers a 4-3 lead.

 

Joshua Torres, the third Wisconsin pitcher of the game, had set the Snappers down in order in the top of the seventh, but ran into trouble in the eighth. He issued a leadoff walk, but Yario Munoz was able to beat the throw to first on a potential double play ball. Pimentel singled to left after Munoz had stolen second base to give the Snappers runners at the corners with one out.

 

Torres got ahead of Kuhn with two quick strikes, but left the 0-2 pitch over the plate and Kuhn hit a long home run to left field. Kuhn's first home run of the season gave the Snappers a 6-4 lead.

 

The Rattlers would put two on base in the bottom of the ninth inning against Rob Huber, but Huber got the final out to preserve the Beloit victory.

 

Wisconsin had rallied from a 3-0 deficit to beat Beloit in the conclusion of Friday's suspended game that was concluded on Saturday. The loss denied the Rattlers a third straight victory, which would have been Wisconsin's first three-game winning streak since April 24-26. The Rattlers have had three two-game winning streaks since May 18, but have missed out on that third win in a row each time,

 

Game three of the series is Sunday afternoon. Devin Williams (0-3, 7.59) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Daniel Gossett (2-5, 6.15) is set to start for the Snappers. Game time is 1:05pm.

 

The first 1,000 fans to attend this Sunday game will receive a poster of Timber Rattlers pitcher Cy Sneed. This is poster #3 in a series of ten that are being given away this season by the Rattlers and Dunkin Donuts. The National Alliance on Mental Illness will be on hand Sunday afternoon for Strike Out Stigma day as part of Mental Health Awareness Month. Fans may play catch on-field courtesy of Rasmussen College starting at noon. As part of 107.5, The Fan's Brewers Sunday, Timber Rattlers players will wear their special Brewers Sunday jerseys for this game. Players will be available for a postgame autograph session sponsored by Tundraland Home Improvements, too.

Postgames Post – May 30, 2015

Both sets of game highlights, a very long 15 minute interview with Matt Erickson between games is definitely worth your time, and the usual assortment of post game interviews.

Orlando Torrez was topping out at 93 today which is nice, he's still all over the place control wise though. Like many of the Latin kids on this WI team he has a ton of moving parts in his delivery so improvement from him will be incremental, or at least I hope he will improve over time.

 

Jake Gatewood had a rough 2nd inning, the Rattlers should have been out of that inning without a run allowed on consecutive plays. The first was a grounder off the mound which Gatewood struggled with and while they got the middle runner at 2nd the relay to 1st was half a step late for the inning ending double play. Then the very next play was to Jake's back hand and it ate him up allowing the run to score. Then Torrez while visibly frustrated went off the air a little bit and gave up the 2B which opened that 3 run margin, the youngsters essentially gave this one away early with those 3 runs giving back outs and losing composure.

 

Monte Harrison was in RF which surprised me, they didn't give a reason on the TV broadcast.

Roenicke Does It All Early, Falters Late In 4-3 Loss

Right-hander's two-run double, 5.2 innings of three-run ball not enough in loss to River Cats

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - Josh Roenicke looked to be doing it all for the Sky Sox on Saturday night, holding the River Cats scoreless through four and driving home the only Sox runs before a tough sixth inning ultimately ended his evening and helped Sacramento to a 4-3 win before a crowd of 4,320 at Security Service Field.

 

The Sox would threaten in the home second after a clean first inning, loading the bases with two-out for Roenicke. The starter would not go down without a fight, working a full count after fouling off multiple pitches to stay alive before ultimately grounding out to end the frame.

 

Roenicke (2-2, 5.04) would follow the entertaining at-bat with an equally fun inning-ending play in the Sacramento third. With consecutive singles giving the River Cats runners on first and second with one out, Roenicke would astutely step off the rubber to look the going runners back before firing the ball to Pete Orr at third in hopes of catching former Brewers farmhand Darren Ford stealing. Ford would eventually be tagged out by Yadiel Rivera who, in a heads-up play, threw to second to nab former big league Brewer Casey McGehee trying to advance on the play, ending the frame with a rare 1-5-6-4 double play.

Both starters would match zeros through three before Roenicke helped his own cause in the home fourth to break through against Sacramento right-hander Clayton Blackburn. After failing to capitalize in his first bases-loaded at-bat of the game, the Sox starter would not miss his second chance, roping a Blackburn offering to right field for a two-out, two-run double to give himself a 2-0 lead. The unexpected hit would chase the River Cats starter after just 3.2 innings of work as they brought in former big league lefty specialist Clay Rapada to retire the lefty swing of Scooter Gennett and limit further damage.

 

Sacramento's offense would avenge their starter, getting back at Roenicke with four runs over the next two innings to take a 4-2 lead by the middle of the sixth. The River Cats would score their runs by virtue of a wild pitch in the fifth and RBI singles by Hector Sanchez and Carlos Triunfel in the sixth. Roenicke was replaced by Jed Bradley with one on and two outs in the frame. The lefty reliever would not record an out, loading the bases on two consecutive walks before being pulled by manager Rick Sweet in favor of right-hander Ariel Pena. Pena did not fare much better, allowing the Triunfel base-hit to give Sacramento a then two-run lead.

 

Despite being held scoreless by right-hander Cory Gearrin (1-0, 1.23) in the fifth, the Sox offense would continue to battle, cutting their deficit to one in the home sixth thanks to a little small ball. Orr would draw a two-out walk against River Cats reliever Brett Bochy to extend the inning and steal second immediately with Robinzon Diaz at the plate. The hot-hitting Diaz kept up his recent string of strong production, driving Orr home with an RBI single to left. Tim Dillard took over for Colorado Springs in the top of the seventh, tossing two perfect innings while striking out three to keep the Sox in the ballgame.

 

The home eighth would see the Sox with their best chance to tie up, or even take a lead in the game's latter stages as a Rivera leadoff walk and Diaz one-out single gave the Sox runners on the corners against River Cats reliever Cody Hall. Pinch-hitter Chris Nelson would strike out on a foul tip before the Sacramento right-hander got Gennett to fly out to deep left field, ending the threat and sending Colorado Springs into the ninth still trailing 4-3.

 

In territory rarely visited, former Sox starter Nick Additon came on in the ninth in hopes of keeping the River Cats offense off the scoreboard. After back-to-back singles and a double steal opened the frame, the crafty left-hander would work his way out of a runners on second and third, no-out situation. Additon struck out Hall swinging before Diaz gunned down Juan Perez at third base as the runner strayed too far from the bag. Now with two-out and just one on, Additon would comfortably strike out Darren Ford, giving the Sky Sox a chance to pull it out in the bottom of the ninth.

 

The Sky Sox would go down in order in the ninth as Hall recorded his first save of the season to secure the 4-3 win and snap Sacramento's franchise record 10-game losing streak. Colorado Springs falls to 19-29 with the loss as the River Cats improve to 22-28.

 

The Sox will look to get back on the horse on Sunday afternoon in the third game of this four-game set with Sacramento. Drew Gagnon (1-6, 7.78) will lead the charge against River Cats righty Robert Coello (5-3, 3.45) with first pitch set for 1:35 PM MDT (2:35 Central) at Security Service Field.

Scooter Gennett, Logan Schafer, and Shane Peterson combined to go 0-for-15 atop the order; we've seen catcher Robinzon Diaz get on these hot streaks before in is many days in the system, along with Nevin Ashley, production from that position has been incredible; yes, Yadiel Rivera has his first AAA base on balls (56 otherwise very good AB's); free Tim Dillard (seriously, I bet other pro scouts are watching the sidearmer, who has never played for another affiliated organization)...

Manatees Take Series Opener with Early Avalanche

Viera, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees (21-27) have leaned on their pitching staff over the last week to give them a chance to win. On Saturday night, their offense did their part and then some in a 14-0 rout of the Lakeland Flying Tigers (23-25) at Space Coast Stadium.

 

The game's deciding inning came in the bottom of the second, which started when Victor Roache was in the hit shoulder by a pitch from Flying Tigers starting pitcher Jonathan Maciel. Taylor Brennan then followed with a hustle double to right centerfield. Garrett Cooper produced the first run of the Manatee onslaught with a single to left. Steven Halcomb then reached base when Flying Tiger second baseman Tyler Hanover made a throwing error on a groundball. Brevard County continued to play it station to station when Angel Ortega singled to center, bringing in Cooper. Omar Garcia then loaded the bases when he bunted his way aboard. Following a Chris McFarland strikeout, Jonathan Lucroy drove in Halcomb on a fly ball to left center that Flying Tiger left field Raph Rhymes missed on a diving attempt. After a Clint Coulter strikeout, Roache concluded his second at-bat of the inning with a two-run single to right for the two runs of the inning.

 

The 'Tees would push one across in the bottom of the third thanks in part to Lakeland shortstop David Gonzalez, whose throw to first went wide, allowing Ortega to advance to second with two outs. That error would prove costly as Garcia doubled down the right field line to score Ortega.

 

Brevard County would wipe out any thought of a Lakeland come back in their next turn at bat. After Lucroy grounded out to short to start the inning, Coulter walked and came around to score on a double by Brennan. Then, in a play that seemed to encapsulate the night for both teams, Maciel struck out Cooper, but the ball got by Flying Tigers catcher Grayson Greiner, allowing Cooper to reach, Roache to score and bring Maciel's night to a close. After reliever Nate Fury induced a flyout from Halcomb, Ortega then plated Brennan on an infield single as Lakeland third baseman Francisco Martinez had trouble getting the ball out of his glove. Garcia capped the inning with a base hit to center to score Cooper before Ortega got caught in a rundown to end the inning.

 

The game turned surreal in the bottom of the eighth when the Flying Tigers, in an attempt to save a bullpen that had been overworked during the week, sent Martinez to pitch. Coulter immediately greeted him with a double to deep left center. After a flyout by Roache, Martinez walked Brennan and Cooper. With the bases loaded, Martinez then hit Halcomb on the elbow to bring home Coulter. Ortega continued the carousel with a flare into right to score Brennan. After Garcia popped out, McFarland slapped a base hit between first and second to score Cooper with the 14th and final run of the night.

 

All told, every Manatee recorded a hit and they batted the order twice, something they had done only three times all season. Garcia and Ortega both recorded four-hit games; Brennan and Roache logged two-hit games. Halcomb, Garcia, Ortega and Roache had multi-RBI games with Ortega chief among them with three.

 

The offense's outburst overshadowed another outstanding performance by the pitching staff. Eric Marzec had his best start of the season, giving up just three hits in six shutout innings. The trio of Marzec, Clint Terry and Manny Barreda combined to prevent a Lakeland baserunner from reaching third base.

 

The Manatees will look to keep building on the momentum of the last three games on Sunday at 5:05 P.M. as LHP Wei-Chung Wang (2-2, 6.39 ERA) takes to the mound against fellow left-hander Ryan Longstreth (2-3, 3.66 ERA).

Eric Marzec has been as high as AAA, now going as a starter for the Manatees. He had a productive night with 6 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 1 K, 10/4 GO/FO. Clint Terry and Manny Barreda finished the final 3 innings with no damage. Four hit nights for Angel Ortega and Omar Garcia. Omar Garcia started off the season 0-19 and had a horrendous April at the plate has come all the way back to .261 while getting a fair number of walks. He also leads the league in stolen bases. Taylor Brennan had two doubles in the game. Victor Roache with 2 hits. Lakeland's bullpen had been depleted in their last series so they tried to get extra innings out of Jonathan Maciel, which is why they let him give up so many runs. 3rd baseman Francisco Martinez pitched the final inning for Lakeland.

After a couple of days off for each, Wisconsin's Monte Harrison was 0-for-3 with three K's (sacrifice bunt), and Jake Gatewood was 0-for-4 with two K's.

Harrison has fanned 67 times in 130 AB's, Gatewood 44 in 101.

 

Look, tomorrow is June 1st - get these guys to Maryvale for a week, and then let them prepare with the new draftees for Helena.

This is scary, and to be honest, in the midst of all the losing at the big league level, has been an under-reported concern to Brewer fans in general.

Both sets of game highlights, a very long 15 minute interview with Matt Erickson between games is definitely worth your time, and the usual assortment of post game interviews.

 

First of all, so right TC07, that Erickson interview is tremendous, very interesting defense of the tandem system, too.

 

So in addition to all the fantastic media in that post (how lucky are we to have the production value provided by the Brewer affiliates -- by the way, Dustin says Helena audio interview archives are on the way this summer), here's another look at Saturday's regularly scheduled Timber Rattler game, this time via the MyNew32 TV broadcast.

 

While the Timber Rattlers' own video feed didn't quite show all of an unusual play with baserunner Tucker Neuhaus involved in a collision between first and second base, this video does show the actual bump Neuhaus takes...

There were 19 Dominican Summer League games scheduled Saturday.

 

Three were rained out, two others began but ended up suspended, and 13 were played to completion.

 

One other game was not reported on at all.

 

You guessed it .

 

The league is idle as usual for a Sunday, so we'll keep an eye out to see if there is an update over the remainder of the weekend.

The Manatees are already carrying 13 pitchers (roster), and now with the news that RHP Johnny Hellweg is joining the squad soon, it'll be interesting to see how creative the Brewers get, because the starters are going deep, and the many healthy bullpen guys are all doing their jobs nicely (stats).
