Lucroy helping young players while on rehab

Jonathan Lucroy of the Milwaukee Brewers, on rehab assignment with the Brevard County Manatees, talks with starting pitcher Javier Salas during Thursday's game in Viera. (Photo: Craig Bailey/FLORIDA TODAY)

Just hours before Jonathan Lucroy made his first rehab start in Viera, he was behind the batting cage watching his new teammates.

Lucroy, who is getting back into playing shape after a toe injury sidelined him for more than a month, was giving some tips and sharing his wisdom with the young team.

"To have a guy like him come in and talk to the hitters about their approach and stuff … It is a great experience for these guys just to pick his brain," Manatees manager Joe Ayrault said after Thursday night's game, a 2-0 Brevard County win against Charlotte.

The National League All-Star starting catcher is one of those players who doesn't mind taking the time to help the other guys. After all, he was once in their shoes. In 2008, Lucroy played 64 games with the Manatees and hit .292 with 10 home runs and 44 RBI.

"Just seeing guys like him and learn from them. They will give us tips and that is really cool," said Brevard County second baseman Chris McFarland, who played with Brewers third baseman Aramis Ramirez last season as well.

Lucroy made his presence felt right from the beginning of Thursday's game. After McFarland walked, Lucroy took a pitch and punched it through the hole between first and second to get a rally started.

It resulted in one of the two runs scored by the Manatees.

But, he admitted he was rusty.

"Honestly, I missed some pitches tonight," Lucroy said. "That is what I have to work on because up there (Milwaukee), you can't afford to miss the mistakes."

Defensively, he was just as impressive, whether it was running to back up first base or helping prevent a big inning by getting the lead runner on a bunt. Lucroy showed everyone at Space Coast Stadium how the catching position should be played.

"He is one of the best receivers in the game. He is fun to watch," Ayrault said. "It is good for our catchers to get a chance to watch someone like him."

And that was just Day 1. The Manatees have the luxury of Lucroy's experience all weekend.

"When we found out we were getting him, we were really fired up," Ayrault said.

For good reason. Not only will he help the team win this weekend, he shows them that if you play the game the right way, they can reach the goal of making it to the major leagues.

He is living proof.

NOTE: Lucroy is DH'ing Friday night...

Yep. Another gem from Jorge Ortega. Manatees win 3-1. 96 pitch complete game, 79 for strikes. He is really off the charts with command. Doesn't really have overpowering stuff. Will have the link report later.

Rain halts Rattlers & Snappers in the sixth inning

Tie game will be resumed on Saturday at 5:05

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and Beloit Snappers were tied 3-3 with two outs in the top of the sixth inning when a severe downpour halted play at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The game was suspended and will be resumed at 5:05pm on Saturday evening.

The Snappers (19-29) took command of the game early with three runs in the top of the first inning against Milton Gomez. James Harris scored from third on a wild pitch for the first run. A two-out, two-run double by Joe Brizuela made it 3-0.

Wisconsin (14-34) started their comeback with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. Greg McCall doubled to start the inning. Elvis Rubio reached on an error with one out to allow McCall to score from third. Gregory Munoz singled to center with two outs to drive in Rubio with the second run of the inning.

Rubio doubled to start the Wisconsin fourth inning and Munoz drove in Rubio with a one out single to tie the game 3-3.

Gomez settled in after the first inning and retired nine in a row after a Joe Bennie single in the third inning. Gomez was behind Brizuela 2-0 with two outs in the top of the sixth when it began raining hard enough for the umpiring crew to call for the tarp. The grounds crew got the infield covered just before the heaviest of the rain hit the stadium.

Friday's game will be picked up where it left off when play resumes on Saturday evening at 5:05pm. The game will be played to a conclusion. There will be a thirty minute break before the start of the regularly scheduled nine-inning game. The gates to Neuroscience group Field at Fox Cities Stadium will open at 3:30pm.

The starters for the for regularly scheduled game on Saturday night are Orlando Torrez (0-1, 5.46) for the Timber Rattlers and Heath Fillmyer (0-4, 7.33) for the Snappers.

It is 1985 all over again on a Festival Foods Saturday! Timber Rattlers players and coaches will don caps and jerseys based on those of the 1985 Appleton Foxes for the second game as part of Back to the Future Night. The hats and jerseys will be available in a silent auction with the proceeds being donated to the Wisconsin Parkinson Association. Fans will also be able to get their picture taken with a DeLorean on display in front of the ballpark, too. Stick around after the game for a fun Fireworks display courtesy of FOX 11.

If you can't make it out to the ballpark, there are several ways to catch the action. The radio call for both games is on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 4:45pm. The broadcast may also be heard on Tune In Radio and IHeartRadio. The game will also be available to MiLB.TV subscribers. MyNEW 32's Sports Showdown will televise the second game on Saturday night.

Wisconsin Partial Boxscore

Milton Gomez... so many moving parts of his delivery but there's some skill to him, he's just so inconsistent with every part of his delivery. For example tonight in the 1st he threw a perfectly located FB on one pitch, then missed everything by 3 feet low and outside on the next and the pitch went to the screen. The wild pitch which scored the run was a FB that hit 2 feet in front of home plate and skipped past McCall, he had no chance.

Ortega's Masterpiece Earns Manatees Series Split

By Jerry Durney / Brevard County Manatees

Jorge Ortega, seen above, tossed his third complete game of the year in Friday's win. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

Viera, Fla. - Jorge Ortega has delivered just about every time he's taken the mound this season for the Brevard County Manatees (20-27) and Friday night may have been his best performance of the season, throwing a complete game in a 3-1 win over the Charlotte Stone Crabs (32-16) at Space Coast Stadium to help the Manatees earn a split of the four game series with the league leaders.

The Manatees would provide Ortega all the run support he would need in the bottom of the fourth inning. The rally started with a one-out single by Jonathan Lucroy deep in the hole at shortstop. After Clint Coulter flew out, Victor Roache launched a pitch from Stone Crab reliever Eduar Quinonez over the batters' eye in centerfield for a two-run homer to give the 'Tees the lead. The home run, which traveled an estimated 439 feet, was his ninth of the season which tied him with Coulter for the league in that category as well as RBI with 30.

Brevard County would tack on one more in the inning when Taylor Brennan drew a walk following the home run. Brennan then stole second with Garrett Cooper at the plate. Shortly after the steal, Cooper hit one back up the middle that would deflect off of the bag at second and into right center, allowing Brennan to come around and make it 3-0.

The Stone Crabs' one true threat in the ballgame came in the top of the eighth which started with a double to left center by Braxton Lee. After a foul out to first by Dayron Varona, Ortega got Kean Wong to tap one back to the mound and then caught Lee hung up between second and third, initiating a rundown involving Brennan and Angel Ortega, which eventually ended with Brennan tagging out Lee before he could get back to second. That brought Willy Adames to the plate, and he would be the one to get Charlotte on the board as he ripped a double to the wall in right center, bringing Wong all the way around from first. The danger would end there as Ortega coaxed a flyout to center from Jake Bauers.

Ortega finished with an exclamation point as he struck out Maxx Tissenbaum to retire the side in order in the ninth for his league-leading third complete game of the season. For the evening, Ortega gave up just that one run on 7 hits, striking out four and walking none, his third straight start without issuing a free pass. The gem is made all the more impressive by the fact that he did it on 96 pitches, 78 of which went for strikes.

Lucroy went one-for-four at the plate with two groundouts and a flyout to the gap in right center. He's expected to play behind the plate Saturday night.

Stone Crabs starting pitcher Taylor Guerrieri was lifted after three innings and 35 pitches as he continues to recover following Tommy John Surgery. However, he was dominant while on the mound, retiring all nine hitters he faced, five via strikeout.

The Manatees return to North Division play on Saturday night as they begin a three-game series with the Lakeland Flying Tigers. RHP Eric Marzec (0-2, 5.40 ERA) gets the ball against RHP Jonathan Maciel (2-4, 5.21 ERA) at 6:35 P.M.

Brevard County Box Score

I took a note during the game that Jorge Ortega through 4 innings had thrown 43 pitches, 37 for strikes. His control is incredible. On a sour note, since being hit in the head by a pitch yesterday, Chris McFarland has made 3 errors in the field and took a golden sombrero in today's game. Hopefully not related. Roache now tied for the league RBI lead (with Coulter) and HR lead (with Clint and Phillip Ervin of Daytona).

Orf, Shuckers turn tables and win 3-2 Friday

CHATTANOOGA, TN - A night after falling 3-2 to the Chattanooga Lookouts, the Shuckers turned the tables and defeated the Lookouts 3-2 on Friday at AT&T Field, taking a 2-1 series edge. Nathan Orf drove in two runs and scored the go-ahead run in the eighth to lead Biloxi to their 29th win of the season, matching them with Chattanooga for the most in the Southern League. Biloxi's first place cushion remains 2.5 games with 22 games remaining in the first half.

The Shuckers' (29-19) bullpen has tossed 13.1 scoreless in the series and they were masterful behind Friday's starter Brent Suter. The 25-year-old lefty out of Harvard worked 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits while walking five and striking out four. Relievers Austin Ross (1.1, 2 H, 2 SO), Mike Strong (W, 2-0 - 2.0 IP, BB, 2 SO) and Damien Magnifico (S, 4 - 1.0 IP, BB) blanked the Lookouts over the final 4.1 as Strong earned his first win since April 18 and Magnifico locked down his fourth save this month.

The Shuckers scored first for the first time in the series in the top of the second as Orf brought home Michael Reed (1x3, R, BB) and Brandon Macias (1x3, R, BB), who had each walked, giving Biloxi an early 2-0 advantage.

Chattanooga (29-18) sent eight batters to the plate in the fifth inning and shortstop Jorge Polanco plated Carlos Paulino with a two out single and Byron Buxton scored on a throwing error by left fielder Kyle Wren (0x4). Suter walked the next two batters to load the bases and turned it over to Ross, who fanned Adam Brett Walker to leave the bases loaded. Chattanooga stranded nine on-base Friday.

VIDEO: Watch Orf's big base hit here via Chattanooga TV WDEF's report, also the huge strikeout from Ross

Tyrone Taylor (1x4) had the go-ahead and eventual game winning hit on Wednesday and the 21-year-old from Torrence, CA provided an RBI double that scored Orf from third to break the tie and give Biloxi back the lead for good at 3-2. Orf reached on his singled to lead off the inning, advanced to second on a popped up bunt from Wren and advanced to third on a throwing error by Paulino.

Reed extended his hitting streak to seven games on Friday and Parker Berberet (1x3) upped his to eight games. Orf has hit in each of his last four games.

The Shuckers will go in search of their 30th win and third straight series victory on Saturday night, in game four of the series at Chattanooga's AT&T Field. RHP Hiram Burgos (1-0, 3.97) starts for the Shuckers and RHP D.J. Baxendale (3-0, 2.47) toes the rubber for the Lookouts. First pitch is scheduled for 6:15 PM, with coverage beginning at 6:00 on 1240-AM WGCM , WPMO-AM 1580 and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Fans can also listen to the game using the TuneIn Radio app or by going to www.biloxishuckers.com.

Biloxi Box Score

Inherited runners-scored: Ross 3-0.

Nothing prettier for a reliever.

Bullpen ERA's can be misleading, especially at only the end of May, but check out the box and realize those accurately reflect the season-to-date effectiveness of the dynamic Shucker trio.

Shuckers shade Chattanooga Lookouts, 3-2

by Kelley Smiddie, Chattanooga Times Free Press

Although he was penciled into the last spot in Biloxi's batting order Friday, Nathan Orf was right in the middle of what the Shuckers did offensively in a 3-2 Southern League baseball victory over the Chattanooga Lookouts at AT&T Field.

Both teams still lead their respective divisions, Biloxi (29-19) in the South and Chattanooga (29-18) in the North. The fourth game in the series of five is tonight at 7:15 (6:15 Central).

Orf went 2-for-3 and scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning. He was on first base when Kyle Wren fouled out to catcher Carlos Paulino near the backstop, then tagged up and took off for second.

Although Paulino's throw to second sailed into center field, allowing Wren to take third, Lookouts manager Doug Mientkiewicz didn't lay all the blame on his catcher.

"We've got to get off the bag there and catch that," Mientkiewicz said.

With Orf at third with one out, Chattanooga brought its infield in, but Tyrone Taylor lined a double to the left-center-field gap. He was thrown out trying to stretch the hit, but the go-ahead run was in.

Biloxi took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning when, with the bases loaded and two out, Orf singled through the middle. Michael Reed and Brandon Macias, both of whom walked, scored before Parker Berberet was thrown out trying to advance from first to third.

Chattanooga tied it in the fifth on Jorge Polanco's single. Polanco drove in Paulino, who had walked, from second, and Byron Buxton also scored on the play.

Buxton had reached on a single and moved around to third on Polanco's hit. Then when left fielder Wren threw the ball into the infield, there was some confusion between Shuckers pitcher Brent Suter and catcher Berberet as the ball came rolling across the diamond between the pitcher's mound and home plate.

It seemed at the last second each thought the other would get the ball, so both ended up going to cover home. As the ball rolled on toward the first-base dugout, Buxton was able to score standing up.

Lookouts starting pitcher Greg Peavey threw six innings and got a no-decision. Aside from the second inning, he allowed one hit and one walk.

"He's been pretty good," Mientkiewicz said of Peavey, who came into the game 4-1 but with a 6.32 earned run average. "He's had two bad starts, maybe his second and third of the year. He's the guy we wanted in the Rule 5 draft this year. He had a good year in the Eastern League last year, which is a tough league to pitch in. That's kind of what he does."

At 2-for-4, Steve Wickens was the only Chattanooga player with more than one hit, although the Lookouts stranded nine runners while Biloxi left four on base.

"They pitched well," Mientkiewicz said of the Shuckers' four pitchers, reliever Mike Strong (2-0) getting the victory and Damien Magnifico earning his fourth save. "There's a reason why they're leading their division. They're fundamentally sound. They gave us two runs, but we gave them one back.

"We definitely can swing the bats better, but their pitchers did a good job keeping us off balance."

Rain Delays Game, Not Sox In 8-3 Victory

Backed by a 15-hit attack, Tyler Thornburg turns in third-straight quality Sox start to top Sacramento

By Ed Pearsall / Colorado Springs Sky Sox

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - An hour and fifteen minute rain delay could not dampen the Sky Sox spirits on Friday night as the lineup quenched it's thirst for hits with the offense racking up 15 of them en route to a convincing 8-3 win over the Sacramento River Cats in front of 3,331 fans at Security Service Field.

Sox starter Tyler Thornburg (1-2, 4.41) would allow a first inning run after a Jarrett Parker single drove home former Brewers favorite Casey McGehee. Thornburg would settle down however, striking out two in that first frame and keeping the River Cats off the scoreboard until the top of the seventh. The right-hander allowed a one-out, two-run home run to Sacramento first baseman John Bowker. The long ball would ultimately chase Thornburg, but not before tossing 6.1 strong innings of three-run ball. He allowed seven hits while striking out four in the impressive bounce-back start.

Scooter Gennett answered for the Sox in the home first, taking River Cats starter Ty Blach (4-5, 3.82) deep for a solo blast to tie the ballgame at one. The leadoff shot marked the first by a Sox hitter at Security Service Field in nearly two years to the day with Corey Dickerson providing the last such occurrence on 5/30/13 against the Tacoma Rainiers. The second baseman has been on a tear since joining the Colorado Springs club, hitting .325 with two dingers, five RBIs and eight runs scored.

The Sox offense would not score again until the fifth when they broke the game open with a six-run frame thanks to some frustratingly sloppy play by the River Cats defense. Blach wouldn't be charged with an earned run in the frame, allowing six unearned on five hits and two errors. The errors by McGehee and Bowker would extend the inning with four runs already home, allowing Donnie Murphy to come to the plate with one on and one out. Murphy made Sacramento pay for their miscues as he drilled his first home run of the season to right field on a 2-2 offering from Blach. Shane Peterson, Matt Long and Robinzon Diaz also added RBIs in the frame en route to three-hit nights for each. Colorado Springs would take their new 7-1 lead into the seventh before the River Cats were able to chase Thornburg.

Jim Henderson worked out of the seventh, tossing 0.2 of an inning with a strikeout before a lefty/righty combination of Michael Kirkman and Rob Wooten would end any hopes of a Sacramento comeback in the game's final frames.

Holding a 7-3 lead going into the home seventh, the Sox would tack on one more run to cap the nights scoring off of side winding, left-hander Clay Rapada. Yadiel Rivera tripled to deep right-centerfield with one out in the inning, extending his current hitting-streak to a Sox season-high nine games, before a Diaz single plated the hot-hitting shortstop.

Colorado Springs would not relinquish the 8-3 lead as Wooten slammed the door in the ninth to secure the series-opening victory.

The Sox have now won three-straight games for the first time this season, improving their record to 19-28 with tonight's victory. The River Cats are trending in a very different direction however as they have now lost ten-consecutive games, dropping their season record to 21-28.

The Sky Sox will look to continue their hot-streak on Saturday evening as they take on the River Cats in the second of a four-game set. Josh Roenicke (2-1, 5.12) takes the hill for Colorado Springs against Sacramento right-hander Clayton Blackburn (1-3, 5.06) with first pitch set for 6:05 PM MDT (7:05 Central) at Security Service Field.

Colorado Springs Box Score

Another huge night for Shane Peterson, now with a .945 OPS; as noted above, big evening for many as the Sky Sox are starting to show signs of competence...

Obviously Austin Ross' 2015 is a small sample so far, but does anyone know if he picked up a few MPH moving to the bullpen or if he learned a new pitch (cutter, etc.)? 38 K's in 27 innings at AA is good even if he is old for the league.

Ross, Strong, Chapman, Magnifico. A little old for AA, but potentially some cheap bullpen arms to carry the Brewers through the next few down years.
