We're Number Five! We're Number Five! - The 2016 MLB Draft Thread

Brewer Fanatic Contributor

Interesting read from Chris Mitchell at Fangraphs:

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/kyle-lewis-and-the-elite-small-conference-draft-prospect/

He was curious about a guy like Kyle Lewis coming from a small conference (think Rickie Weeks, who he talks about as a comparison).

He talks about how it is difficult to look at a guy like Lewis, but at the end, he says this:

Still, given the stakes associated with an early-round draft pick, teams should be thinking long and hard about Lewis’ strikeout woes, especially in light his competition level. Hitters who have trouble making contact against weak competition often don’t see their performances translate to the big leagues. The brief history of first-round college hitters from lower-tier conferences neatly highlights this phenomenon.

The competition level is college really can be quite diverse - and it's not something I really think about.

Still hoping for Pint. I apologize for nothing else to add to the thread, other than:

The Brewers have had a history in the last 10 years of developing hitters. They (generally) figure out ways to score enough runs. Looking at the current roster and Arcia/Phillips and others coming, that will likely continue.

The Brewers need pitching! They need a lot of pitching. Roll the dice on Pint or Groome please

I'm curious what the difference is between Ray and say, Jungmann or Bradley? Is Ray a high-upside guy, or is he the position version of the high floor/moderate ceiling college pitcher that people say/said those two were/are?

I'd be more worried if he struggled in the Cape Cod League but he didn't. In fact, he struck out less than Nick Senzel in the Cape last year.

I thought about calling Pilliere out on Twitter for that one - some, "new rumor" that is .... hey everybody, the Brewers are in on Blake Rutherford, who had a great workout for them!

And the guy thatcould fall all the way out of the first round if we don't take him might be willing to work out a deal to be taken at #5. I am shocked.

They tricked me into thinking the draft actually starts at 6 EST again. Every single year I fall for it... Now I have to sit through an hour of "Let me tell you, this pitcher named 'A.J. Puk' is a possible ace!"

LOL.. do it in his chat.. http://www.d1baseball.com/d1chat.php

Interestingly, 20% of the readers in this chat would pick Corey Ray 1-1, for all the haters out there.

can I dislike the pick before it's made?

It's the brewers.... they'll screw it up no matter what....

Fangraphs had an analysis this winter that the brewers were one of the few organizations with top 100 talent to have no "elite" players. Looking at the brewers I'd have to agree. Stern has made some nice moves, but he needs to add "elite" talent. You do that at #5 by making the right decision and go with the player with the highest ceiling. Don't go with the weak college conference talent because you've just set the ceiling at meah....

To bad those 20% don't make up the front office of every team outside of the Brewers, World Series would be easy to by then. I really hope I'm wrong on him but I've tried to watch him & think positively about his ceiling..... Just don't see a future All-Star. Maybe a better Michael Reed. Still think he moves to LF. Defensively, if he is your top CF option at MLB level, that's not good.

Mainly for the sake of being able to go back some day and see how wrong I was, here is my final non-expert rankings of how I would order my draft board (financials notwithstanding).

1) Jason Groome (can't get past the talent, he has been my favorite player in this draft from start (last summer) to finish.

2) Riley Pint

3) Mickey Moniak

4) Braxton Garrett

5) Blake Rutherford

6) Alex Kirilloff

7) Ian Anderson

8) Zack Collins

9) Corey Ray

10) Delvin Perez (the failed performance enhancer drug test is tough to overlook)

I am heavy on the high school crop, especially pitchers. A.J. Puk and Kyle Lewis may end up being stars, but I just don't trust either of them. I may regret not ranking Nick Senzel, seems like he is a safe bet to be a major leaguer. I could see the possibility of a successful Kevin Seitzer type career.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Pitching, Pitching, Pitching. Think about trades. Jon Lucroy is being annointed the #1 trade player this deadline. He can't get Texas to give up Joey Gallo. But Pitching, It's 3 players that are top 100 basically, if you're the #1 or #2 SP out there available. It's draft TOR potential over and over for me so long as you can sign them. Gomez/Fiers got us Santana, Phillips, Hader thankfully and Adrian Houser. I think the Pitchers can net us depth in position players easier than depth at pitching. Gallardo got potentially what is the system's #1 SP prospect Marcos Diplan and a future late inning/closer? in Corey Kneble+ the Sardinas to Ramon Flores to this point. I just see the value is higher for a Pitcher in trade than position players, because Pitching is so hard to come by. Not just quality but avoiding injuries. I like what Milwaukee could be bringing up here in 4years, Our own NY Mets 5some of SPs that are Aces to #2s. Hader, Diplan, Mederios, add Ponce and Kirby +#5 I hope today. 1 type of these guys can be gotten in Braun or Lucroy trade. In this era of hard throwers and less bats, I believe the goal should be to win that battle of throwers vs bats.

I just can't rationalize passing on Groome if he is there. He is the dream HS lefty pitching prospect. Like if you were to create the dream pitcher, it'd turn out to be a lot like him. Only knock is a developing change up. 6'6, strong & durable frame, lefty, clean mechanics, good arm slot, sits mid 90s with FB topping at 97-98, great command of it, unbelievable and far advanced curveball, great command of it, and yeah..... Want ur lottery ticket, here it is!

Not only do I completely agree, I have heard people say that he isn't nearly the prospect Brady Aiken was as a HS LHP. For me Groome is a better overall package than Aiken was when he went 1.1.
