We're Number Five! We're Number Five! - The 2016 MLB Draft Thread

Seems like Pint will be nabbed just before the Brewers' pick.

So we are currently sitting with this Top 5 (if rumors aren't BS).

1. Phillies: Moniak

2. Reds: Senzel

3. Braves:

4. Rockies: Pint

5. Brewers:

Brewers are primed for an elite arm (Puk/Groome) or position talent (Lewis, Rutherford, Ray, Lowe or Collins). I really like the spot that Milwaukee is sitting in tonight.

Up to date mock based off rumors...

1. Phillies- OF Micky Moniak

2. Reds- 3B Nick Senzel

3. Braves- RHP Ian Anderson

4. Rockies- RHP Riley Pint

5. Brewers- ??????

They would have their choice of LHP AJ Puk, LHP Jason Groome, OF Kyle Lewis, OF Corey Ray, SS Delvin Perez or OF Blake Rutherford.

Who do YOU pick in this scenario?

I wasn't sure they'd even have a shot at Puk or Lewis a few weeks ago. To me it's down to those two in this scenario and then I'd select Puk.

Crazy that they could have a choice between Puk and Groome. Rutherford and Lowe are exciting, but I don't see how they could choose one of those two with both of those pitchers available.

My guess is that the Braves are still 50/50 on whether to take Lewis or Anderson. However, given the choice between Puk and Groome, I'm still on the fence, personally. Puk is safer and closer to the majors, but I feel that Groome has a bit of a higher upside. Tough call.

This draft has turned into an absolute jump ball .... as fluid as any MLB draft I can remember.

I do believe the top two picks are going to be Moniak and Senzel, but after that, it's all interchangeable rumors.

One day ago, I was certain the Brewers would not get a shot at either Puk or Lewis, now they may actually wind up with a shot at either one.

My stuff ...

I bet against the Rockies drafting a prep pitcher.

I do not want Zack Collins as the Brewers' first pick. He's a fine prospect, but there are plenty of guys I consider to have higher ceilings. It's a top five pick ... don't play games - take the best guy, and sign him.

A while ago, I posted Josh Lowe as the guy the Brewers may take as a surprise - at this point, I'm not sure it would surprise anyone.

I think .... and for gosh sakes, this could change 17 more times today ..... I think, it's Rutherford to Milwaukee.

#1 Moniak

#2 Puk

#3 Anderson

#4 Pint

#5 ?

No offense to the Rutherford lovers, but I think he would be bad pick with that board. Actually I think Rutherford is a bad pick period. Everyone complains about Ray not having an elite ceiling, but Rutherford is in that same boat. A guy with good tools across the board, but nothing special. Very similar player to Corey Ray actually.

Lewis probably is the only one with a good chance to develop into an elite talent as far as OFers go. I would pick him or the best pitcher available. Maybe a Zack Collins if they want to go underslot. However with multiple teams doing that before them it may be a bad idea unless they truly like Collins outside of his cheap bonus.

As I said earlier, I think you have to take Lewis if going positional, and Puk if you're going pitching.

As far as choosing pitching or position, that is not easy. Don't think I'd pass up on Lewis if he falls to us.

Just not sure how you can love one and hate the other. Only difference is the fact Ray is a college guy and has a better chance to stay in CF.

Corey Ray:

Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 55 | Run: 60 | Arm: 50 | Field: 55 | Overall: 55

Blake Rutherford:

Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 55 | Run: 60 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 55

Agree. So do you prefer Ray Lankford, Charlie Blackmon or Andrew McCutcheon as comp for Corey Ray?

I'm curious as to why people think Rutherford would be a good pick at 5. I know he's a solid prospect, but why is he a good pick at 5?

I could say the same thing about Corey Ray. I do not understand how they could be considering him with the other players who will be available. I am going crazy with all these reports linking him to the Brewers at 5. Why take an outfielder without star potential when they have 6-8 of those in their system already?

Some rumors to add to this morning's mock - Rutherford in mix at 5, Whitley a dark horse at 11, Lewis still in play at 1.

Round 3-10 of MLB Draft are Friday, beginning at noon. Expect Verona catcher Ben Rortvedt to be drafted sometime in that range.

Would be happy if the Brewers took him in the third.

I love Corey Ray but from the Brewers franchise prospective it's SO much easier to find an OF (later in the draft, free agency, via trade, etc), than it is to find a Top-of-the-Rotation arm. I'm really still hoping Brewers go with Puk, Pint or Groome over ANY of the available bats in the first round this year.

Here's a list of current OF prospects in Brewers org, not in majors yet:

1. Of Brett Phillips

2. OF Trent Clark

3. OF Demi Orimoloye

4. OF Monte Harrison

5. OF Tyrone Taylor

6. OF Michael Reed

7. OF Clint Coulter

8. OF Victor Roche

9. OF Rymer Liriano

10. OF Keon Broxton

11. OF Kyle Wren

12. OF Troy Stokes

Since the Brewers went with Trent Clark over the likes of Brady Aiken last year, I hope they don't make the same mistake again.

Besides, as the old saying goes, you can NEVER have enough pitching!!!!

Not sure I'd directly compare him to any of those players. He is in that same class of players though. Fringe CFer, great speed(SBs), patience at the plate, good contact, and with 20+ homer power.

Does everything well

I think our OF depth is a bit overblown. It is Brett Phillips, Trent Clark..............................................and the rest of the field.

Not only that but Phillips isn't having a great season and Trent Clark is really far away. We have more depth in the OF, but I don't think I would be mad if we drafted an OFer. It isn't like we have two Top 50 prospect OFers in AAA.

Puk because he is a safer pick while still featuring a high ceiling.

I get the feeling that the Reds will change it up and end up going with Puk, which leaves the Brewers board even more in disarray....

I think with Pint AND Puk being gone, along with Perez and Groome having question marks now that make them umcomfortable top 5 choices, it leaves the Brewers brass choosing between Ray or Rutherford.

Maybe the Brewers throw a complete change up and go with RHP Dakota Hudson?

This is crazy.

Of the three, Lankford .... Granderson is also a good comp, perhaps also Bernard Gilkey. Some of everything.

This is my feeling. Don't get cute. Just get the best guy. If the team feels that the best guy is Collins, then fine. But don't pass on better players - we need quality more than quantity, in my opinion.

It's not that I don't like Collins or want him, but I just get this feeling the team is passing on better guys.
