Wow. That's going to kill Perez. I guess the next question is 'what kind of drug test' did he fail.

If it's smoking pot, teams might be willing to forgive and forget. If it's PEDs, that's gotta scare people. I guess that depends on the kind of PED. There are so many.

Even with pot I think teams will be hesitant. Wasn't there already concerns about his maturity?

I'll just accept Ray as the pick..... That way if we pick anyone else beside him, I'll be ecstatic & think he made an amazing pick. Just haven't bought into the Ray is an elite ceiling talent. That is my opinion though, agree to disagree

FORMERLY BrewCrewWS2008 and YoungGeezy don't even remember other names used

I'm still convinced it's going to be Rutherford, and I'm A-OK with that.

Really not going to be disappointed no matter who it is though. If I had to pick, I'd agree with the board, a high upside pitcher like Groome or Pint.

When do draft prospects take drug tests?

The most recent CBA requires the top 200 draft prospects to be drug tested. Not sure when the tests take place or how they are administered.

According to John Manuel it is the Major League Scouting Bureau that arranges the tests. Here is a series of tweets regarding it...

@johnmanuelba: ML scouting bureau drug tests its top 200 prospects every draft year, sends to clubs. Clubs haven't received results yet. Unusually late
@Bill_MLBScout: @johnmanuelba @hudsonbelinsky Thought the MLSB was just doing follow reports now and individual clubs must administer their own tests.
@johnmanuelba: @Bill_MLBScout @hudsonbelinsky Believe gathering video and doing drug testing is the MLSB's biggest mission now.

Jeff Passan with some conflicting info to John Manuel claiming team have known about drug tests since last Thursday. Makes sense since rumors about Perez dropping started popping up on Friday (Jeff Ellis alluded to it on Scout podcast recorded Friday night).

Passan's Tweets...

@JeffPassan: Drug test results for top draft prospects have been available to teams since last Thursday. They can call commissioner's office for results.
@JeffPassan: Teams have known about the positive test for Delvin Perez, the Puerto Rican SS, since then. It's why his stock is dropping like an anchor.

I would still like to see the Brewers draft Groome if he is available, but the fact that he has switched his college commitment to a JC and has backed out on plans to attend the draft in-person seem like ominous signs regarding where his advisors expect him to be selected at this point. If they pass on Groome I really hope Riley Pint is the selection at #5.

Just for the record, from Sept. 20 in this thread:

"One name absent from YoungGeezy's list is Blake Rutherford. He's #1 on my personal list with one of the easiest, prettiest and most powerful left-handed swings I've seen. Very similar to David Justice when he was coming up with the Braves in the late-80s/early-90s."

Very happy to hear the Brewers so actively connected to him. And for that matter, the Phillies, because he deserves to be in the mix for the top pick.

Count me in on the Rutherford bandwagon, although, I wouldn't be upset if they take Pint. I feel our minor league depth is good enough to focus on upside in this draft. If we are going for quantity over quality, picking someone like Collins or Lowe and then spending later in the draft would make more sense than Ray or Senzel.

My Board:

1. Puk--He won't be there, but if something happens, I think we have to take him.

2. Rutherford--I think his age will let us move him quicker through the system

3. Pint--If we picked Pint and he flamed out, I wouldn't regret the pick. Taking chances on possible TOR pitchers is something we should be doing.

4. Groome--His stock falling worries me, however, see Pint note.

5. Lewis--Too good of a hitter not to be in the top 5, but I'm not counting on him being avaiable at 5.

If they want to save money and spend later:

6. Lowe

7. Collins

I don't know if this was posted, but here's BA's Mock Draft 5:

5. BREWERS: Milwaukee has been tied heavily to Perez. Industry sources are buzzing about Perez falling but not on the record, throwing a wrench into first-round projections of the player ranked first among shortstops in the entire class. It now appears Perez may not even go in the first round at all. That leaves the Brewers to take a prep arm such as Pint or perhaps Groome a home in the first 10 picks. The fallback, if a deal can’t be cut with Groome, is Corey Ray. If Groome doesn’t find a home, he’s said to be heading to junior college rather than Vanderbilt. PICK: Corey Ray, of

I'm pulling for Rutherford. I wouldn't be upset by Ray, but I wouldn't be excited either. I'm skeptical of Pint, I'm not too worried about Groome. If they can cut a deal with him, he'd be the one I'd chase. Ultimately though, I love Rutherford's swing. I like the David Justice comp that Colby used.

I'm all in on the Collins bandwagon... MOF hitter and our 1B of the future!

Potentially could be in Milwaukee by late 2017 or OD 2018.

The Schwarber of this year's draft.

I am ok with Rutherford, he is higher on my list than my favorite, Braxton Garrett.

I am also ok with Groome or even Ray.

But Pint would be a disaster given his delivery mechanics issue and the heel plant, etc. I have no problem taking a guy like that with amazing stuff later in the first and with the committment to make him your closer.

Draft rule this year has to be broken and not take BPA but take Best Pitcher available because of the fact its such a high pick, the team is very weak in pitching depth, still does not have one impact arm in the system, and they cant, when ready to contend again go and buy pitching like the Cubs have done. They need to develop it on their own.

So, not down on Rutherford, I just think the Brewers need a guy like Garrett or Groome more than a guy like Rutherford or Ray.

It just seems like Garrett isnt even being considered by the board or the team, which is a huge mistake in my opinion. He's the safest with the most upside potential they will have a chance at.

I know it bothers some of you, but I enjoy a draft that's wide open like this one.

I'm hoping for Riley Pint or Blake Rutherford, but I'd be happy with Corey Ray too.

I think a lot of you are dismissing Ray as a, "safe pick", rather than the best guy available - time will tell, but I think he's more than that.

I really think it's a high school player for Milwaukee, with Moniak off the board ahead of them, and possibly Pint or Groome. If you take Perez out of the mix, that puts Rutherford right in the wheelhouse.

Who knows, maybe Josh Lowe is still in the conversation too.

1. Groome

2. Puk

3. Pint

4. Ray

5. Collins

6. Moniak

7. Lewis

8. Wentz

9. Senzel

10. Rutherford

This would be my board if I was the Brewers.

I cautiously put Groome #1 not knowing the extent of the concerns that have many experts causing him to fall. If they truly are a big concern one could knock him off the board. Not knowing I keep him at #1.

I probably am higher on Corey Ray than most are, but I think he has a lot of potential with his ability to stay in CF. He has all the tools to succeed.

I am not really a Rutherford fan. I don't think he has the skills for me to take him over the college OFers. He may have a higher ceiling, but not enough for me to take the added risk and time on him. I also prefer Moniak over Rutherford due to his defensive upside and still great offensive profile.

Should be an interesting day tomorrow with the board all over the place. Not really any clear picks anywhere in the Top 10. Outside of Puk there is no one that we know won't be there at #5.

Have heard some speculation that the Phillies are in on both Moniak and Rutherford, with idea of paying them both in the $4.5-$5.5 million range. In the scenario Moniak would likely be their first pick and Rutherford would go at #42. If they pull it off it would be an impressive haul. Have to think the Brewers are one of the few teams that could throw a wrench in the plan.
