We're Number Five! We're Number Five! - The 2016 MLB Draft Thread

With today's loss, the Brewers are 16-32, which puts them on pace to actually do worse than the legendary 2002 team, which finished at 56-106.

That team wound up earning the second pick in the 2003 draft, which was used to take Rickie Weeks. At the moment, the 2015 Milwaukee Brewers are in line to get the first pick in the draft next year.

Hey, it's something fun, so - GO BREWERS GO, GO BREWERS GO!

Check back, sports fans, for fun updates as the season plays out, eventually this will be converted to the 2016 first round speculation thread, so feel free to chime in with your guess as to who the team might take if they wind up first on the clock.

A couple of guys I like with that 1st pick next year or even a top 5 pick next year:

Bobby Dalbec, 3B, Arizona

A.J. Puk, LHP, Florida

Jason Groome, LHP, IMG Academy HS (FL)

Riley Pint, RHP, St. Thomas Aquinas HS (KS)

Riley Pint is a number pick not sure how you can see he is not one. Scouts have been comparing Pint to Lucas Giolito, Jameson Taillon and Dylan Bundy. Not sure how anyone could say he is not a possibility for a #1 pick.

Dalbec has been compared to Kris Bryant and D.J. Peterson but he probably won't stick at 3B and will more than likely have to go to the OF. He has a cannon for an arm so RF would be a nice spot for him it would be a waste to put him at 1B.

Puk has been someone that I wanted the Brewers to draft out of high school. He is a big lefty and draws some comparison to Sabathia. Oh and he can hit monster home runs also so if pitching doesn't work out he could always become a power hitting 1B.

If you notice in article, 2017 #1 is JJ Schwartz much like former top draft prospect Carlos Rodon, He was a Brewer draft pick in the late teens out of HS. I know nearly impossible signs but ugh sad to see

For those who want to become better acquainted with the 2016 MLB Draft class Kiley McDaniel did a nice (way too early) ranking list along with brief descriptions of next year's top draft prospects in this Fangraphs article, 2016/2017 MLB Draft Rankings: Ridiculously Early Edition

PG also has the players for 2016 ranked already and have churned out articles regarding those guys

Here's a quote from some guy named Patrick Ebert:

On 2016...

“It could be one of those draft years where the talent is just incredible,” Ebert said. “It stacks up heavier in pitching right now with the prep class just ridiculous and the college class almost as ridiculous. It could be one of those once-every-10-years types of classes.”

Will teams pick a guy in the 2015 first round knowing they won't sign them, to get an extra first round pick next year?

That's certainly an interesting wrinkle, isn't it? A team drafts a kid, and holds the line and what they'll pay, because either they get him at their price, or they have a bigger pile of cash to use in a deeper draft next time around.

I can just imagine the uproar if Milwaukee failed to sign their top pick this year, but it would be a lot of fun on here next June.

I don't think so. Drafts can change dramatically in a year and not signing your pick means you aren't refilling your system. You want to get people in your system ASAP.

Morals are the other problem. You would have to be one horrible human being to intentionally pick a kid knowing you won't sign them. It would be completely wrong and a very good chance you get a big fine and lose the big outright if you can't find a good enough reason why you didn't sign them.

It would be really hard to pull off something like that without being caught.

Plush, it's not something I would ever advocate, but it would be easy to, "pull off", if a team would actually make that move.

You could just pick a high school kid, who is a strong college commit, and offer him slot to sign - if he takes it, great, you got him, and if not, the pick is protected, and you have another pick the next year.

I do not believe that was why Pittsburgh took Mark Appel three years ago, but he had been very clear that he wasn't going to sign, which was the main reason he didn't go first in that draft. The Pirates took him 8th, he did not sign, and they had two picks the next year. The Astros had offered six million, in predraft conversation, which Appel turned down - knowing this, Pittsburgh still took him, and offer him 3.8 million....obviously, he declined.

When it comes to the baseball draft, never assume a scout won't say it, or a team won't do it.

Can anyone tell me when we get another chance to sign JJ Schwarz? It really hurts to have missed that guy, he had a studly Freshman year.

Yet another example of why the draft process still needs major work. The Brewers had zero chancing of signing Schwarz, and they knew it, but they had picks to use, because there are 40 rounds, so they took him, because, "why not?"

What a complete waste of time and energy, and an unnecessary tease for fans.

Shorten it - now, and clean it up so the kids who won't sign this year are not in the pile.

I don't see the Brewers missing the top five picks next year, and all five of those picks may turn out to be pitchers who have a chance to be true studs in the big leagues.

PHI and MIA play each other 10 more times this year, so that's at least 10 guaranteed wins between them. However, the Brewers play MIA and PHI a combined nine more times this year, with six of those being at home. The Brewers also play CIN nine more times, also with six of those being at home.

The Brewers play STL, CHI, PIT, and WAS a combined 26 more times this year, with 17 of those being on the road. CIN plays STL, CHI, PIT, LAD, SFG, KCR, WAS, and NYM a combined 36 more times, but 19 of those are at home.

I wish I was as confident that the Brewers will end up with a top-5 pick. It's going to be close.

In case you like following the top players for next year, our annual PG All-American Classic game is going to be on MLB Network this coming Sunday at 7pm central time. Riley Pint won't be in the game, but our #1 prep player for the 2016 class, LHP Jason Groome, will be.

As the 2016 class starts to define itself a little more with so many summer showcases and tournaments come and gone, there looks as though to be a wealth of left-handed hitters from the prep class. There also could be some solid players that profile to play 3B at the next level, something I know that is a hot topic when discussing the Brewers overall system. Even though I also recognize the Brewers don't draft for need (nor should they).

AJ Puk was already mentioned, but a few of the top college arms include Georgia's Robert Tyler (missed some time last year due to injury, but returned and sustained mid/upper 90s as a starter), Maryland's Mike Shawaryn (one of my faves for next year, profile similar to that of Brewers-killer Lance Lynn), Vanderbilt's Jordan Sheffield (another power arm) and Oregon's Matt Krook (lefty with low-90s fastball and big hook). Sheffield and Krook had TJ during their freshmen years (Sheffield before it started) so they have that working against them. Shawaryn you won't hear too many people put him that high but they will come April/May of next spring.

Lot of talented power arms! I'm saying a little prayer for Groome to fall to us wherever we are picking! But if not when you have Pint, Bergner, Whitley hopefully on board. Puk, Hansen, Tyler, Krook, Jones are the college arms that will be out there as well. I'm biased towards to prep players, that's just my personal preference.

Give me Jason Groome in the 1st, C Andy Yerzy in the 2nd, i'd be estatic

Brewers better get Lohse back in the rotation. Sitting 4/5th but Atlanta is only a game back and Oakland is only a game and a half back. Boston and Oakland are 4 games back. So we still could screw this up and end up picking 9 (or later).
