Dominican shortstop Franly Mallen turns 18 today. Now listed at 6'1", 160, the young man, signed for a significant $800,000, and posted a .235/.326/.292 (.618 OPS) line in his age 17 rookie DSL season, 30 errors in 60 games (two errors while playing second base).

 

That puts Orlando Arcia's age 16 DSL season in perspective -- .294/.386/.459 (.845 OPS), 15 errors in 62 games.

 

All rightfully hail Orlando, signed out of Venezuela for just $95,000.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers had a 2-0 lead on Wednesday night at Perfect Game Field, but it wasn't enough. The Cedar Rapids Kernels rallied to tie the game in the fourth and take the lead for good in the fifth on the way to a 7-3 win over the Rattlers.

 

Wisconsin (13-34) grabbed the lead in the second inning. Sthervin Matos hit a two-run home run to left-center to give the Rattlers a 2-0 advantage.

 

The Kernels (30-17) tied the game in the fourth inning with two runs off Cy Sneed. The inning started with a walk to Max Murphy. He took second on a slow roller to second base. Pat Kelly followed with an RBI single to center. Sneed struck out the next batter, but allowed a two out single to Tyler Kuresa. Then, Blake Schmit singled to drive in Kelly with the tying run.

 

Cedar Rapids took the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Nick Gordon doubled and TJ White walked. Sneed threw a wild pitch to move both runners up a base. Murphy singled to center to chase in the go-ahead runs and Sneed from the game.

 

Dustin DeMuth brought the Rattlers back to within a run in the top of the sixth inning. The left-handed first baseman cracked a leadoff homer to right on the first pitch of the frame and Wisconsin was only down 4-3.

 

But, the Kernels responded against reliever Tyler Linehan in the bottom of the sixth. Brett Doe doubled, took third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kuresa.

 

Cedar Rapids added to their total in the seventh inning. Gordon walked, stole second, and took third on a grounder. That ended Linehan's night. Gian Rizzo became the third Wisconsin pitcher and he gave up back-to-back- RBI doubles to Murphy and Jorge Fernandez. Those hits put the Kernels up 7-3.

 

The Rattlers didn't get to Kernels starting pitcher Felix Jorge after the DeMuth homer. Jose Velez and Luke Brank combined to work the final three innings in scoreless fashion to close out the game.

 

Greg McCall had three hits for the Wisconsin offense, but the Rattlers dropped their fourth straight game.

 

Wisconsin is also 0-8 against the Kernels in 2015.

 

The final game of Wisconsin's 11-game road trip is Thursday night at Perfect Game Field. Kodi Medeiros (1-2, 5.03) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Jared Wilson (4-0, 2.58) is the starter for the Kernels. Game time is 6:35pm.

Late Brevard County Rally Falls Just Short

Viera, Fla. - Jacob Faria dominated over seven shutout innings as the Charlotte Stone Crabs (32-14) defeated the Brevard County Manatees (18-27) on Wednesday night at Space Coast Stadium.

 

Faria (8-1, 1.35 ERA) blanked the Manatees over seven strong innings to earn his eighth win of the year. Faria allowed just four hits and one walk. He fanned six in the win.

 

The Stone Crabs opened the scoring in the fourth inning with a pair of runs. Willy Adames, Jake Bauers and Granden Goetzman singled consecutively to load the bases with nobody out. After a force out at the plate, Pat Blair singled on a liner to left to score Bauers. Yoel Araujo then lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Goetzman. The Stone Crabs led 2-0 after four innings.

 

Brandon Woodruff (1-2, 4.20 ERA) left the game after six innings. He surrendered two runs on six hits and one walk. He struck out two. Tyler Spurlin pitched a scoreless seventh and allowed just a single before he induced a double play.

 

The Stone Crabs added to the lead in the eighth against Manny Barreda. Adames smacked a one-out double to left-center. With Bauers batting, Paul Eshleman tried to catch Adames off of second with a snap throw, but the throw was off target and allowed Adames to move to third. With the infield in, Bauers blooped a single over the head of second baseman Chris McFarland and gave Charlotte a 3-0 lead.

 

Mark Williams pitched a perfect top half of the ninth with two strikeouts to keep the deficit at three.

 

The Brevard County bats came alive in the bottom of the ninth. Clint Coulter walked with one out and advanced to third on defensive indifference and a wild pitch. After Victor Roache struck out, Taylor Brennan walked to bring the tying run to the plate.

 

Garrett Cooper singled home Coulter on a liner to center to put the Manatees on the board. Jose Pena then singled to right field. Brennan scored from second and Cooper advanced to second. The Manatees trailed 3-2 with the tying run in scoring position and the winning run at first. Steven Halcomb came off of the bench to pinch run for Cooper. Brad Schreiber induced a ground out off of the bat of Paul Eshleman to end the threat and the game. Schreiber recorded his league-leading 11th save in the process despite the two runs allowed. Schreiber had surrendered two earned runs all season entering Wednesday.

 

The Manatees and Stone Crabs will continue the series tomorrow night in Viera. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. RHP Javi Salas (3-3, 2.61 ERA) will start for Brevard County. RHP German Marquez will toe the rubber for Charlotte.

The Sky Sox performance on Wednesday night proved that a day can make all of the difference as they responded to Tuesday night's 9-1 loss with a resounding 11-1 defeat of the same Las Vegas 51s before a crowd of 2,182 at Cashman Field.

 

The Colorado Springs offense would get off to a fast start, giving themselves all of the runs they would ultimately need in a three-run top of the first. The Sox knocked two singles off of 51s starter Tyler Pill (1-2, 7.04) to open the ballgame before consecutive, two-out RBI doubles by Matt Clark and Pete Orr gave their club a quick two-run lead. Yadiel Rivera followed with an RBI single, plating Clark to round out the frame's scoring.

 

In fact, the Sox would score seven runs through the game's first four innings with at least one runner crossing the plate in each. Nevin Ashley's two-run shot in the second and Cravy's own two-out RBI double in the third highlighted the offensive attack over that span.

 

The Sky Sox, further turning the tables on Las Vegas, would be provided a far better result by their starting pitcher. Cravy (5-4, 4.04) turned in what would be the strongest outing by a Sky Sox starter this season to lead the way. The right-hander allowed just one run on five hits and two walks while striking out five over eight sparkling frames. Cravy's lone run allowed came in the 51s fourth, giving up a walk to Wilfredo Tovar and a double to Alex Castellanos that would lead to a Brandon Allen sacrifice fly. Cravy bounced right back, striking out Travis Taijeron to end the frame and extinguish Las Vegas' threat.

 

While the 51s would not score another run, the Sox would tack on four more before the night was through. Colorado Springs would earn three of the four runs against relievers Scott Rice and Chase Bradford in the game's final two frames. The unearned run would be charged to righty Zach Thornton in his one inning of work.

 

RBI singles from Ashley in the eighth and Scooter Gennett and Chris Nelson in the ninth capped the Sox scoring with the 19-hit offensive onslaught giving the team 11 runs on the game.

 

Colorado Springs' field day at the plate saw every hitter with an at-bat notch at least one hit with six recording multi-hit games. The top of the order: Gennett, Logan Schafer and Ashley combined for nine hits, five runs and four RBIs. Even more impressive than these stats is the fact that every Sox starter, with the exception of Cravy, scored at least one run in the complete team effort.

 

Jed Bradley would relieve Cravy in the ninth after the starter threw 97 pitches in his eight innings. The left-handed Bradley would set down the heart of the Las Vegas lineup in order to close out the 11-1 Sky Sox win.

 

The Sox will look to earn a series-split on Thursday night in the finale of this four-game set with the Mets' top minor league affiliate. Taylor Jungmann (1-2, 6.90) matches up with 51s righty Matt Bowman (2-5, 6.98) tomorrow at Cashman Field in Las Vegas. First pitch is slated for 8:05 PM MDT (7:05 Central).

Good timing as of late for Tyler Cravy -- will his next start be Monday night in St. Louis? I haven't been online since the Brewers' matinee ended, so I'm unaware of the buzz on the mystery rotation callup. It won't be Taylor Jungmann, who as you just read, starts tonight. The "safe" choice would be Tyler Thornburg, who would normally pitch Saturday, but could push Matt Garza out a day and pitch vs. the Diamondbacks instead, but that doesn't mean Cravy isn't more deserving, and a 40-man roster spot is open.

 

Nevin Ashley, you rock, catcher-dude -- .322/.383/.496 (.878 OPS), but hey, you're no Martin Maldonado...sigh.

CHATTANOOGA, TN. - What else would you expect in game one between the two best teams in the Southern League? The Biloxi Shuckers erased a five-run deficit to force extra innings and steal a win from the Chattanooga Lookouts on Wednesday night at AT&T Field. The Shuckers chipped away at a 6-1 deficit and eventually went ahead thanks to Tyrone Taylor's two out, two-run double in the top of the 10th. The Shuckers record improved to 2-3 in extra-inning games and match Chattanooga with 28 wins on the season, the most in the Southern League.

 

A leadoff walk to Nathan Orf (1x4, 2 R, BB) in the 10th put the go-ahead run on base for the Shuckers. Adam Weisenburger's (0x3, R, BB) sacrifice bunt moved the runner into scoring position. Kyle Wren (2x5, RBI, R, BB) drew a walk one out later to keep the inning alive for the red hot Taylor (2x6, 2 RBI, 2B). The Shuckers' left fielder worked a 3-2 count and roped a double into right field to score both runners and give Biloxi its first lead of the night.

 

"I was looking for a fastball in," said Taylor of his 3-2 pitch from Chattanooga reliever Madison Baur. "He had been working me away and I grinded the at-bat to full and then was able to come through for the team."

 

Taylor is batting .364 in his last 10 games and has upped his average to .280 on the season.

 

Chattanooga (28-17) got on the board early in the first on a RBI single by Travis Harrison to bring in Jorge Polanco, giving the Lookouts a 1-0 lead.

 

Orlando Arcia's (3x6, HR, 2 RBI, R) third long ball of the season tied the game at one in the top of the third.

 

The Lookouts responded with a run of their own in the bottom-half of the inning on a RBI groundout by Miguel Sano to plate Twins' top-rated prospect Byron Buxton.

 

Chattanooga used two home runs in the fourth to open up a four-run lead, including the first ever inside-the-park home run against the Shuckers by Buxton.

 

Starting pitcher Jorge Lopez lasted just four innings and allowed six runs on nine hits with a walk and three strikeouts on 79 pitches.

 

The Shuckers chipped away at the five-run deficit with a run in the fifth when Arcia doubled home Nick Shaw (1x4, RBI, R) with two outs, and took a bigger chunk out of the 6-2 hole with a three-run sixth.

 

Michael Reed (2x4, 2B, BB) struck out to start the inning, but a single to Orf, sandwiched between walks to Taylor Green (3x2, RBI, R, BB) and Weisenburger loaded the bases for Shaw, who lifted a sacrifice fly to center to bring in the first run of the inning. Wren laced a single to left to bring in Orf, with Weisenburger coming in to score on an error by the left fielder Adam Brett Walker.

 

Green tied the game in the seventh on a sacrifice fly to center to bring in Nick Ramirez (2x6, R). The Shuckers first baseman extended hit on-base streak to 15 games with a single in the seventh.

 

Biloxi's (28-18) bullpen held strong in the fifth through ninth innings, using a combination of Jacob Barnes (2.0 IP, H, 4 SO), Austin Ross (IP, H, SO), Mike Strong (1x2 IP, 2 H, SO) and Damien Magnifico (W, 1-0, 1.1, H, 2 SO).

 

Magnifico allowed a one-out single to defending Southern League offensive player of the week Max Kepler, but got Brett Walker and Mike Gonzalez on strikes to end the game and complete the comeback.

 

RHP Brooks Hall (4-2, 3.92) will seek out his second win in the month of May after picking up three in April. The Milwaukee Brewers' reigning pitcher of the month will face off against LHP David Hurlbut (0-1, 21.00), who will be making his second start of the season for the Lookouts. First pitch is scheduled for 6:15 PM, with coverage beginning at 6:00 on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Biloxi rallies in 46th consecutive game away from home

Wednesday night at AT&T Field marked the 46th game of the season for the Biloxi Shuckers, and it was their 46th contest away from home.

 

The Shuckers are the newest member of the Southern League, having relocated after competing last season as the Huntsville Stars. Groundbreaking for Biloxi's future home, MGM Park, took place in January 2014, but the facility has not been completed, forcing its tenants to log mile after mile on bus trips.

 

"It hasn't been terrible," said Shuckers center fielder Kyle Wren, the son of former Atlanta Braves general manager Frank Wren. "We're in Double-A, so we get to stay in decent hotels, and the stadiums are nicer. The biggest thing is that our team has just taken this head on, and we've got a really positive outlook on it.

 

"I think our team has handled it really well, which has made it easier."

 

Biloxi's road resiliency continued with an 8-6 win over the Chattanooga Lookouts that was decided on Tyrone Taylor's 10th-inning double that scored Wren and Nathan Orf. The Lookouts grabbed a 6-1 lead after four innings, getting a Stuart Turner home run over the center-field wall in the fourth, followed by Byron Buxton's inside-the-park homer to center.

 

Chattanooga dropped to 28-17, while Biloxi improved to 28-18 after the first of five meetings between the league's two division leaders.

 

The Shuckers received disappointing news before Wednesday's game, when Biloxi mayor Andrew Gilich announced that the target date of the park's opening on June 6 would not be met. The team went into this season knowing its first 55 games would be on the road, but Biloxi's home opener now won't be until the second half of the 140-game league season.

 

"It's been challenging, and getting today's news is a little hard to deal with, but it's not going to affect us out here," Biloxi right fielder Michael Reed said. "We're going to play our hardest whether we've got the home-field advantage or not. We don't have to pay for rent and we get meal money, so there are perks, but obviously we would like to have a home and have our trucks."

 

Said Wren: "That was the date we had been waiting on since spring training, but we're going to keep doing the same things we've been doing in the first 45 games."

 

Gilich said it would cost an extra $380,000 to open MGM Park on June 6 and that he did not want to burden the taxpayers, particularly with no guarantees it would be ready. The target date is now any date before Aug. 4.

 

Chattanooga players respect what their Shuckers counterparts have accomplished so far but would not want to trade places.

 

"That would be a bummer," Lookouts right fielder Travis Harrison said. "I'm sure they're learning to deal with it, but personally I love coming home and playing in front of home crowds. For them not to get to experience that is pretty tough."

 

ESPN has featured Biloxi's journey on some SportsCenter segments, and the team has been featured in ESPN The Magazine as well.

 

"That part has been pretty cool," Reed said. "We've enjoyed that."

Nice statement game by Cravy. Not sure if Brewers were paying attention as reports are it will be either Thornburg or Jungmann and his nearly 7 ERA that will get the call in a few days.
