Thread for names mentioned in final week before draft

Recommended Posts

You know I didn't realize it until I watched video a couple of days ago but Ashe Russell is another low arm slot guy, cross him off my list posted in the speculation thread. I'm not sure how that got past me because when I went back and read sure enough all of the scouting reports note the low arm slot. Much like Medeiros he's filthy but I'm uncertain he'll be able to throw enough strikes as a professional.

Wow, that's really disappointing to hear. I was definitely interested in him as well but like you said, I want control. Is it that hard to find a guy who can throw upper 90s with pin-point control and tons of movement?

This is Jack Burton in the Pork Chop Express, and I'm talkin' to whoever's listenin' out there.

Yes low 3/4, which is basically just above side arm, and both pitchers you mention would be the extreme best case example, Medeiros throws from that same slot. Obviously different handed than Russell, but the same slot.

Since the other thread is/was more intended for first round picks, I'll put this here. These are some 5th-10th round guys, almost all senior signs, that could be more than just someone to help allocate bonus pool money towards tough signs (all are seniors unless noted):

Chris Keck, 3B, UCLA - 6'2" LHH 3B, put up good OBP (.393 OBP, 33 BB in 255 PAs) with a little power (7 HRs); listed at 188 lbs, may develop more power if he can fill out

Cody Jones, CF, TCU - smaller but speedy switch-hitter, .377 BA and .478 OBP, 36 BB and 26-31 SBs in 250 PAs

Drew Turbin, 2B, Dallas Baptist - picture Scooter Gennett with plate discipline; .484 OBP this past year on top of a .353 BA

Cory Taylor, RHP, Dallas Baptist - a junior, but throws 93/94 with a low effort delivery; had a better sophomore year, but the Brewers likely are aware of him having drafted Cy Sneed last year. Didn't see him on the BA Top 200 list.

Chance Adams, RHP, Dallas Baptist - also a junior and a juco transfer, was a long reliever who in 54 IP gave up 37 hits, struck out 77, and walked 12; not ideal height for a starter (6'0") but I could see the Brewers trying him as one

Ryan Krill, 1B, Michigan State - big LHH 1B, second in Big Ten in HR and SLG and 4th in BA

David Kerian, 1B/OF, Illinois - led Big Ten in HRs, SLG, OBP, and BA; switch-hitter who is athletic enough to play corner OF

Reid Roper, 2B, Illinois - LHH 2B with some power and plate discipline - 40 BB and 10 HRs in 257 PAs

Rob McDonnell, LHP, Illinois - 6'2" LH starter, overshadowed by his teammates but had a great year on his own, in 74 innings gave up 56 hits and struck out 70; walks a little high at 29, but only gave up 1 HR

Tyler Peitzmeyer, LHP, CSU-Fullerton - lefty closer for the Titans, at 6'2", 210, may be worth trying as a starter

Kyle Friedrichs, RHP, CSU-Long Beach - not the biggest guy (6'1", 190), but in 100 IP gave up 90 hits, struck out 109, and walked only 12

And though he's a junior, if Thomas Eshelman is still there in the 5th round, maybe even fourth, sign me up. In 123 IP this year he gave up 93 hits, walked six (yes, six), and struck out 125. Yes, a 21:1 BB to K ratio. BA has him at #171.

Is Hayes someone you would draft in the 1st and hope to save cash for later pics? I thought he might be a slight stretch for 1st round, but if we could save some cash to put towards signing other guys I guess I would be ok with it. I think I would still rather take someone else at 15 and hope beyond hope that he falls to our next pick (40?).

Mudville, I think if the Brewers really want Hayes, they would have to take him first, and then take a more expensive guy next, as you suggested.

Last year, Medeiros was projected to go between picks 25-35, but the Brewers took him early, then paid Gatewood and Morrison. If the Brewers want Hayes, that's probably what they'd have to do to get him. Hayes is also projected between 25-35, with the Dodgers and Braves both right in that range - I don't think he'll get to Milwaukee's second pick, at 40.

EDIT:Young Mr Hayes is really making the rounds. I know he worked out for the Braves, and he's here with the Brewers now, he also worked out for the Sox, in Fenway, before he flew to Milwaukee. There is a rumor that the Dodgers have a verbal agreement with the family to take him, "below slot", with their first pick.

I don't know who will get him, but he's obviously got a lot of teams taking him seriously right now.

Hayes also worked out for the Blue Jays and the Diamondbacks, so he has plenty of interest. I think he'll go between the Brewers' first and second picks.

I would predict the Braves at either #28 or #41, they will likely be in a position to go over-slot for Hayes if necessary.

Apparently University of Washington Outfielder Braden Bishop worked out with the Brewers at Miller Park today per this TWEET (with picture) posted by his father.

As an aside, also came across this Seattle Times ARTICLE about Braden dealing with his mother's diagnoses of Alzheimer's.

Since it is included as free content in part of the preview window for the Perfect Game's MLB Draft Reports: 1-500, I thought it would be worth sharing this thorough scouting report on Bishop. Also, a good reminder of the great content provided by folks like our friend colbyjack and the Perfect Game staff, and why I have added a subscription to my b-day wish list! :)

154. Braden Bishop, of, Washington (JR)

R-R, 6-1/190, Mountain View, Calif.

Previously Drafted: Braves ’12 (36)

In terms of pure athletic ability, Bishop is right up there with anybody in the 2015 draft class. Standing at 6-foot-1, 190-pounds, Bishop shows present strength on his frame and does so while maintaining the fast-twitch muscle that helps impact his overall game. A top-of-the-order bat who projects to stay in center field long-term, Bishop is an easy plus runner whose speed shows up in a game more often than not. The second member of the University of Washington to appear within the top 200, joining catcher Austin Rei, Bishop hit .295 on the spring while starting all 49 games in which he appeared. A righthanded hitter, Bishop has been a steady performer at the top of the Huskies’ lineup showing a direct path to the ball with the feel and ability spray hard line drives to all parts of the field. Going gap-to-gap allows Bishop to put his big speed on display and stretch out an extra-base, though he has also shown some power this spring hitting four home runs after never hitting one his previous two seasons. Once on base that speed becomes a factor yet again, leading the Pac-12 in stolen bases last spring before finishing fifth in the league with 15 this year. His high-end athleticism plays extremely well in center field also, showing big-time closing speed to either gap with long gliding steps after getting a solid first step.

LINK: Texas high school RHP Justin Maese mentions the Brewers as one of four teams that have shown the most interest over the past few months. Maese who mentions in the article he hopes to go in the first couple rounds, ranks 134th on the BA 500 and has a college commitment to Texas Tech.
