Rattlers fall 6-3 at Kane County

Cougars earn split in series with Wisconsin

GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars went up 3-0 early on Memorial Day at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark and never gave up the lead on the way to a 6-3 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Markus Solbach allowed two unearned runs on one hit over 6-2/3 innings to earn his fourth win of the season. Four Kane County pitchers held Wisconsin's offense to four hits.

 

Kane County (21-23) grabbed the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Marty Herum hit a solo home run to left-center with two outs off Wisconsin starting pitcher Joshua Torres for a 1-0 advantage.

 

The Cougars added to their lead with two runs in the bottom of the second. Victor Reyes knocked in the first run of the inning with an infield single. Colin Bray made it 3-0 with an RBI grounder.

 

Kane County was looking for more in the third inning as they loaded the bases on a pair of singles and an error. But, Torres kept the hole from getting any deeper by getting a strikeout and two popouts to end the frame and leave all three runners stranded.

 

Torres would retired nine Cougars in a row before turning the game over to Gian Rizzo to start the bottom of the sixth. Rizzo got the first out, but allowed a triple to Henry Castillo and an RBI single to Jose Queliz and Kane County's lead reached 4-0.

 

Wisconsin (13-32) rallied in the top of the seventh inning. Tucker Neuhaus reached on an error and Greg McCall drew a walk to force Solbach out of the game. Reliever Steve Hathaway got a strikeout for the second out of the inning. Monte Harrison cashed in the unearned runs with a triple off the wall in right to get the Rattlers to within two. Harrison had two hits on Monday - half of Wisconsin's total for the game.

 

But, Kane County scored in the bottom of the seventh against reliever Josh Uhen. Herum reached on a dropped third strike and scored on a double by Joe Munoz.

 

The Rattlers rallied again in the top of the eighth to cut the deficit to two runs. Jake Gatewood singled to start the inning and was on third with two outs. Neuhaus drove in Gatewood with a single off Cody Geyer to make it 5-3.

 

Stryker Trahan hit a long solo home run in the bottom of the eighth off Orlando Torrez, the fourth Wisconsin pitcher of the afternoon, to give the Cougars their three-run cushion back.

 

In the ninth, Kane County went to Zac Curtis, their closer. Curtis struck out the first two batters of the inning before Brandon Diaz drew a walk to extend the game. But, Curtis struck out the next batter to finish off the Rattlers. Curtis is 9-for-9 in save opportunities this season, including 4-for-4 against Wisconsin.

 

The Timber Rattlers won the first two games of the series at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, but came away with a split after dropping the last two games. Wisconsin is 4-4 on the first eight games of their road trip.

 

The Timber Rattlers begin the final leg of their eleven-game road trip with a the first game of a three-game series at Cedar Rapids on Tuesday night. Devin Williams (0-2, 5.87) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. The Kernels have named Stephen Gonsalves (4-1, 1.50) as their starter. Game time at Perfect Game Field is 6:35pm.

HUNTSVILLE, AL - The Biloxi Shuckers wasted no time in putting away the Birmingham Barons on Monday, plating four runs in the first inning to take the rain-shortened series finale at Joe Davis Stadium, 7-2. The win ensures the Shuckers will stay in first place with the off day on Tuesday before a pivotal five-game series with the North Division leading Chattanooga Lookouts. Biloxi leads the Mississippi Braves by 2.5 games in the South Division standings, with 25 games remaining in the first half.

 

The 7-2 victory over Birmingham marked the 2,226th and likely final minor league baseball game to be played at Joe W. Davis Municipal Stadium in Huntsville. Chris Curley popped out to right-fielder Tyrone Taylor to end the top of the fifth as the skies literally opened up at the 31-year-old ball yard. After a short delay, the game was ruled official and the Shuckers locked down the series win, taking three of five from the Barons. Biloxi went 9-6 in games at "The Joe", which opened its gates for the first time in 1985.

 

Kyle Wren (0x3, R), Taylor (3x3, 2 R), Orlando Arcia (3x3, RBI, 2 R) and Nick Ramirez (1x3, RBI, R, 2B) all reached safely to start the bottom of the first. A sacrifice fly by Taylor Green was the first out of the inning after two runs had already scored. Brandon Macias (0x1, BB) walked and Nathan Orf (1x2, RBI) singled home Ramirez to finish off the scoring in the four-run frame.

 

Birmingham (21-24) got two runs back in the second after Brian Fletcher followed a leadoff walk to Danny Hayes with a two-run homer.

 

Hobbs Johnson (W, 3-1) retired the final 12 Barons in order to close out the game. The left-hander from Rocky Mount, NC allowed just the two runs on two hits over his five innings of work, with a walk and four strikeouts. Monday was Johnson's first win since April 28.

 

Biloxi (27-18) added on to its lead in the fourth with a sacrifice fly by Nick Shaw to bring in Adam Weisenburger after a wild pitch moved the catcher to third. Taylor singled for the third time with two outs and Arcia followed with a single to left. The throw to the plate by Courtney Hawkins sailed over third baseman Curley at third, allowing Taylor to score and a hustling Arcia scored on an errant throw by pitcher Tyler Danish to make the score 7-2.

 

The win marked the first in a rubber match this season, improving to 1-2 and the Shuckers are now 5-4 in the first nine series' of the inaugural season.

 

The Shuckers will travel to Chattanooga and spend the off day on Tuesday in the Lookout City. The Shuckers take on the first-place Lookouts in game one of a five game series on Wednesday. Biloxi will send out RHP Jorge Lopez (3-2, 2.95), while it has yet to be determined who Chattanooga will counter with. First pitch is scheduled for 6:15 PM, with coverage beginning at 6:00 on 1240-AM WGCM and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. 51s Right-Hander Tosses Complete Game To Take Series Opener

The Sky Sox could not keep up with Las Vegas in their series-opening 9-2 loss to the 51s before a crowd of 3,810 at Cashman Field on Monday night.

 

Colorado Springs would draw first blood in the top of the third inning with Scooter Gennett's one-out groundout scoring Yadiel Rivera from third. The run would be unearned in 51s starter Duane Below's (4-2, 2.18) final line. The left-hander would stymie the Sox offense the rest of the way, allowing just two total runs (one earned) on seven hits while striking out two in a complete game performance.

 

Sox starter Josh Roenicke (2-1, 5.12) cruised through the first two frames, allowing just two base runners before the floodgates opened for the Las Vegas offense in the third. The right-hander would allow three straight two-out hits in the frame, capped by Johnny Monell's two-run double, giving the catcher two of his four RBI and the 51s a 2-1 lead early on.

 

Las Vegas would tack on three more runs over the next two frames against Roenicke. After allowing two runs to cross the plate in the fifth on two hits, a walk and an error, Roenicke would be relieved by Tim Dillard and an inning-ending strikeout. The reliever-turned-starter would allow five runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out four in 4.2 innings of work.

 

Dillard's would be the only scoreless pitching performance for the Sox as he allowed just one hit while striking out three in 1.1 innings.

 

Nick Additon and Rob Wooten would each add a two-hit, two-run, one-inning relief appearance as the 51s added four runs between the seventh and eight innings to help put the game away.

 

Colorado Springs' offense would show signs of life in the sixth after singles by Donnie Murphy and Gennett opened the innings. Logan Schafer followed with a double-play groundout, leaving Murphy on third with one away. The hot-hitting Shane Peterson would follow through with a two-out single to right, plating Murphy and cutting the deficit to 5-2 after six.

 

Below would keep the Sox offense at bay as Las Vegas piled on the late-inning insurance runs. Colorado Springs managed seven hits in the ballgame, with Peterson and Rivera leading the way with two hits a piece.

 

Five 51s hitters would record multi-hit games with Monell collecting a four-RBI game in the 12-hit effort.

 

With the loss, Colorado Springs falls to 16-27 on the season while Las Vegas improves to 28-17.

 

The Sox will look to put an end to this recent tough stretch in game two on Tuesday evening. Drew Gagnon (1-5, 7.05) takes on 51s left-hander Steven Matz (5-2, 2.24) at Cashman Field with first pitch set for 8:05 PM MDT (9:05 Central).
