Slegers Tosses Shutout Against Manatees in Series Finale

Manatees Held to Three Hits in Loss

Fort Myers, Fla. - Aaron Slegers threw a complete game shutout as the Fort Myers Miracle (22-22) defeated the Brevard County Manatees (18-25) 4-0 on Sunday at CenturyLink Sports Complex.

 

Slegers (3-2, 2.59 ERA) surrendered just three hits and no walks in first career complete game shutout. He hit two batters and struck out a season-high nine batters. The Manatees did not have a runner reach third the entire game.

 

Fort Myers opened the scoring against Eric Marzec (0-2, 5.40 ERA) in the second inning. With one out, Nico Goodrum walked and stole second. Two batters later, Marcus Knecht singled home Goodrum and gave the Miracle a 1-0 lead.

 

The Miracle added to the lead in the third. After back-to-back singles by Tanner Vavra and Zach Granite, Ryan Walker executed a sacrifice bunt. Alex Swim promptly drilled a two-run single up the middle.

 

Marzec lasted six innings. He allowed three runs on four hits and a walk. He struck out four.

 

Fort Myers added an insurance run in the eighth on a throwing error by Rafael Neda.

 

Clint Terry tossed two innings of relief. He gave up just the unearned run in the eighth.

 

Brevard County was held to just three hits. Neda, Garrett Cooper and Victor Roache each recorded singles. Omar Garcia stole a pair of bases. He is now tied for the league-lead with 17 on the season.

 

The Manatees will enjoy a league wide off day tomorrow for Memorial Day. Brevard County returns home on Tuesday to open a four-game series against the Charlotte Stone Crabs. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. LHP Wei-Chung Wang (2-1, 5.82 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Manatees.

The hitting has disappeared. Pretty much anybody is shutting down the Manatees now. Next series against Charlotte which has been the dominant team in the FSL.

Cougars shutout Timber Rattlers 2-0 on Sunday

Luis Ortega allowed an unearned run over seven innings and struck out two on Sunday at Kane County

 

GENEVA, IL - Luis Ortega took a tough-luck loss on Sunday at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark as the Kane County Cougars beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 2-0. The Wisconsin starting pitcher was outstanding as he allowed one unearned run over seven innings, but was charged with the loss as Wisconsin's two-game winning streak came to an end.

 

Ortega retired the first seven batters he faced in the game. But, Dane McFarland reached on an error with one out in the third. Ortega walked Fernery Ozuna on four pitches and Colin Bray reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Victor Reyes gave Kane County (21-23) the lead with a sacrifice fly to right that was deep enough to score McFarland.

 

The Rattlers offense had a lot of chances against Kane County starter Brad Keller. Wisconsin had a leadoff single in the first, second, third, fourth, and sixth innings against Keller, but could not do anything with those opportunities. In the seventh, Keller walked a pair of batters with two outs and gave way to reliever Yency Solis. The Cougars reliever got out of the seventh on a foul pop to left.

 

Ortega only gave up the unearned run in the second inning. The lefty allowed two hits and struck out seven over seven innings. Ortega set new single game highs as a professional in both strikeouts and innings pitched with his performance on Sunday.

 

Kane County added to their lead in the bottom of the eighth inning against reliever Milton Gomez, who retired the first two batters he faced. Bray was hit by a pitch and Reyes followed with a single. Marty Herum was next and he singled to center. Bray scored from second just before Monte Harrison threw Reyes out at third for the final out of the inning and Kane County was up 2-0.

 

Francisco Castillo, who had three hits on the night, started the ninth inning with a single off Cougar closer Zac Curtis. But, Curtis recorded his eighth save in eight opportunities this season by striking out the next three batters to close out the Rattlers.

 

The final game of the four-game series at Kane County is Monday afternoon. Joshua Torres (0-1, 2.25) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Kane County has named Markus Solbach (3-2, 3.13) as their starter. Game time on Memorial Day is 1:00pm.

HUNTSVILLE, AL - The Birmingham Barons rallied for three runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth to comeback and defeat the Shuckers 6-4 on Sunday afternoon at Joe Davis Stadium. The loss evened the series at two apiece and forces the rubber match on Monday afternoon between the clubs. The loss in game four of the set marked the first time this season the Shuckers suffered a defeat when leading after the sixth inning, dropping their record to 23-1. Biloxi remains in first place, but only a game up on the surging Mississippi Braves in the South Division.

 

Biloxi (26-18) got on the board fist for the third time in four games against the Barons on a double play grounded into off the bat of Orlando Arcia (0x4) to bring in Kyle Wren (3x5, 2B, R) and give the Shuckers a 1-0 lead.

 

Birmingham (21-22) jumped into the lead with a two-run frame in the fourth. Jacob May picked up the first hit of the day for the Barons with a double to start out the inning, and advanced to third on a single by Tim Anderson. Anderson stole second and a wild pitch to Courtney Hawkins plated May and moved Anderson to third. Christian Marrero singled to bring in Anderson and give the Barons a 2-1 advantage.

 

The Shuckers would retake the lead with two runs of their own in the bottom-half of the fourth. A one-out walk to Nick Ramirez (0x3, R, BB) extended the first baseman's on-base streak to 13 games, and a single by Taylor Green (1x3, R, BB) put runners on the corners for Biloxi. Tyrone Taylor (0x3, RBI) lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Ramirez and move Green to second. Brandon Macias' (2x4, HR, 2 RBI, R) single brought in Green to put the Shuckers ahead by a run.

 

Macias blasted his first home run of the season for Biloxi, with two outs in the sixth to give the Shuckers a two-run cushion at 4-2. The 26-year-old from Flagstaff, AZ is batting .421 in his first nine games with the Shuckers. Parker Berberet (1x3, 2B, BB) followed and extended his hitting streak to seven games with a double in the sixth

 

The Barons would not go down quietly, running Biloxi starter Hiram Burgos (6 IP, 4 R, 5 H, 3 BB, 6 SO) out of the game after a leadoff single by Marrero and a walk to Danny Hayes put two on with nobody out in the seventh. Austin Ross (L, 2-1, R, 3 H, SO) came on in relief and got Jeremy Farrell to ground into a fielder's choice to put runners at the corners with one out. However, RBI singles by Joey DeMichele, Marcus Lemon and May gave the Barons a one-run lead.

 

An unearned against Damien Magnifico (IP, R, H, 2 SO) gave the Barons an insurance run and a two-run lead in the eighth inning. Wirfin Obispo (IP, H) worked a scoreless ninth for the Shuckers.

 

The rubber match on Monday will feature a matchup between LHP Hobbs Johnson (2-1, 2.70) for the Shuckers against RHP Tyler Danish (4-1, 3.98) for the Barons. Danish, at 20.254 years old is the youngest player in the Southern League. Biloxi's Orlando Arcia is the second-youngest. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 PM, with coverage beginning at 12:55 on 1240-AM WGCM and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. "Monday marks the final scheduled game to be played at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville, AL. The stadium was named for the longtime mayor of Huntsville, Joe W. Davis. Davis was instrumental in gaining support for the stadium’s construction and subsequent moving of the Nashville, Double-A baseball franchise to Huntsville.The ballpark opened in April, 1985 and saw the likes of Canseco, McGwire, Weiss, Steinbach, Giambi, Escaboar, Sheets, Fielder, Weeks and more don its playing surface. While it’s tremendous moving into a brand new ballpark, we will definitely pay our respects to “The Joe”."

Sox Rally, Fall Short In 9-8 Loss

Colorado Springs Scores Six in Final Three Frames, Fall In Near Comeback

The Sky Sox were roughly 180 feet away from tying Sunday afternoon's contest before a pop out ended their day, falling just short of a comeback victory in a 9-8 loss to the Bees before a crowd of 5,081 at Smith's Ballpark.

 

The Sox fell behind early as starter Tyler Thornburg (0-2, 4.45) allowed five runs (four earned) over his first three frames. The right-hander would toss four total innings, allowing those five runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out four.

 

In a 5-0 hole at the end of three, Colorado Springs' offense would tack on a run in both the fourth and fifth inning thanks to a Shane Peterson solo shot and Robinzon Diaz RBI single off of Salt Lake starter Zach Stewart. The right-hander would allow just the two runs in his 4.2 innings of work, surrendering five hits and a walk while striking out two.

 

Left-hander Scott Snodgrass (1-1, 16.62) took over with two outs in the fifth to get Stewart and the Bees out of further trouble. He would toss one inning in relief, allowing just one hit while striking out two to pick up the win.

 

After working their way to a slightly trimmer 5-2 deficit, the Sox would give four runs back over the next two frames as Jed Bradley struggled to a five hit, four run (three earned) performance over 1.2 innings after Jim Henderson's scoreless fifth. Michael Kirkman would finish the bullpen work for Rick Sweet's club, giving the team a scoreless 1.1 inning appearance.

 

Colorado Springs would again tack on a run in consecutive innings, this time in the seventh and eighth. Peterson's two-out single plated Scooter Gennett in the seventh before Yadiel Rivera's triple scored Matt Long from first in the very next inning, cutting the Bees lead to 9-4.

 

The Sox would continue their late-inning rally in their last chance at the plate, scoring four runs off of right-hander Frank Hermann in his one inning of work. Colorado Springs would string together three consecutive singles to start the inning, scoring a run before Pete Orr's one-out double plated Logan Schafer with the frame's second run. Jeremy McBride would replace Hermann, allowing two inherited runners to cross the plate on Long's two-run single. McBride would knuckle down and close out the ballgame, getting Diaz to pop out in foul territory to earn the save.

 

The Sox would ultimately outhit the Bees 16-14 in the one-run contest, however, Colorado Springs' three errors may have been the difference.

 

With the loss, the Sky Sox fall to 16-26 on the season as the Bees improve to within one game of .500 at 21-22.

 

The Sox will look to get back in the win column on Monday as they move on to Las Vegas in to begin a four-game set with the Mets' top minor league affiliate. Josh Roenicke (2-0, 3.68) will take the mound against a yet-to-be determined 51s starter at 8:05 PM MDT (7:05 Central) at Cashman Field in Nevada.

Amidst all the offense, Matt Clark was 0-for-5 with four K's. That makes me sad. Clark still has an .899 OPS for May despite hitting just .178 in his last ten games...
