Nelson, Foltynewicz square off in series finale

By Jon Cooper / Special to MLB.com | May 23rd, 2015

A pair of youngsters, Milwaukee's Jimmy Nelson and Atlanta's Mike Foltynewicz, have plenty to prove Sunday when the Brewers and Braves wrap up their four-game series at Turner Field. Both Foltynewicz, 23, and Nelson, 25, will be making their first appearances against their respective opponent.

Nelson (2-4, 3.73 ERA) is looking to build on his outing Tuesday, when he beat the Tigers, 4-2, in Detroit, allowing one run and three hits over eight innings. He's been an innings eater all season, having pitched into the seventh in six of his eight starts and all four in May. The Niceville, Fla., product pitched at the University of Alabama and was a Braves fan growing up (his favorite players were Greg Maddux and John Smoltz). Nelson is holding opponents to a .213 batting average.

Foltynewicz (2-1, 5.32 ERA), is looking to snap a two-start winless streak and bounce back from a tough outing, a 5-3 loss against Tampa Bay on Tuesday night. He has allowed a homer in each of his last three starts but also has fanned seven hitters in each. Against the Rays, he allowed a career-high five runs and eight hits but also walked only one, a season low.

Three things to know for this game

• Atlanta right fielder Nick Markakis' fourth-inning double on Saturday gave him at least one hit in 15 of his last 17 games, including four straight.

• Milwaukee right fielder Ryan Braun's first-inning RBI single on Saturday gave him four hits and three RBIs in the series. That surpassed his total number of hits and RBIs that he had against Atlanta in all of 2014, when he batted .115 (3-for-26), with one homer and one RBI.

• Foltynewicz is among National League rookie leaders in ERA, innings, opponents' batting average and strikeouts. He's found success in the last category with an improved breaking ball. In his last start, four of his seven K's came on the bender.

1st base umpire absolutely not paying attention and completely blows a check swing call.

Negligence, plain and simple.

Was Counsell paying attention to facts/stats when he expects that Parra is the better option vs. Ramirez against a tough left-hander in a crucial situation in the 8th inning?

Trying to bunt with 2 outs and 1 strike already down by a run in the 9th. That is special.

Yeah ... again Ramirez wastes on the bench ... while we have a slap-hitting bunter up there with 2 outs in the 9th against a hard-throwing closer. Not smart.

Ramirez hasn't been hitting the cover off the ball lately. Lind has been horrendous the past several games too. I thought Nelson looked good today. It sucks that we are so crappy at scoring runs that if any of our starters yield more than a run they are screwed. :(

Actually he was. Parra has been hitting lefties better than righties this year, and the lefty reliever has been more effective against righties this year than lefties. Small samples both, but the stats did suggest to keep Parra in the game.
