Rattlers edge Kane County 5-3

GENEVA, IL - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the top of the seventh inning and went on to a 5-3 win over the Kane County Cougars Saturday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Greg McCall drove in three runs with his bat and Monte Harrison used his legs and his glove to help the Rattlers to their second straight win.

 

Harrison doubled with one out in the top of the first inning and was at third with two outs. McCall dropped in a single just fair down the line in left to score Harrison for a 1-0 lead.

 

Kane County (20-23) evened the score in the bottom of the second inning. Henry Castillo reached on an infield single with two outs. Stryker Trahan lined the next pitch to right-center and Harrison made a diving attempt. The ball popped out of the centerfielder's glove and Castillo scored from first and Trahan stopped at first with the RBI single.

 

The Cougars took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third. Colin Bray singled with one out, moved to second on a ground out, and stole third with two outs. Marty Herum's infield single was enough to get Bray home from third for the go-ahead run.

 

Wisconsin (13-30) tied the game in the top of the fifth. Dustin DeMuth singled to start the inning and stole second. Alan Sharkey singled sharply to right to move DeMuth to third. McCall's sacrifice fly to center was deep enough to drive in DeMuth with the tying run.

 

Kane County had runners on first and second with one out against Kodi Medeiros in the bottom of the sixth. Medeiros, the Rattlers starting pitcher, recorded a strikeout for the second out of the inning, but was at almost 90 pitches for the game. Wisconsin called on Luke Curtis to come on for the final out and the right-handed reliever struck out right-handed batter Dan McFarland for the final out of the frame to preserve the tie.

 

In the seventh, Harrison was hit by a pitch to start the frame. Then, Sharkey reached on a walk. McCall was asked to lay down a sacrifice bunt and it was a great one. The slow bunt up the third base line was fielded by the catcher Trahan who threw to first just in time to get McCall. But, Harrison noticed no one covering home plate and rushed home to score the go-ahead run without a play. Francisco Castillo followed with an RBI single to score Sharkey and the Rattlers were up 4-2.

 

Tucker Neuhaus scored from third on a wild pitch in the top of the eighth inning for a 5-2.

 

David Burkhalter, Wisconsin's third pitcher of the night, pitched a perfect seventh, but ran into trouble in the eighth. The Cougars had runners at first and third with one out when Henry Castillo sent a soft fly ball to shallow right-center. Harrison closed on the ball in a hurry, dove, made the catch and held on for the second out. The runner at third tagged and scored on the play, but the play limited the damage in the inning. Burkhalter kept Wisconsin up 5-3 with a strikeout for the final out of the eighth.

 

Burkhalter pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning - with help from another great catch by Harrison - and picked up his second save of the week. Burkhalter also earned the save on Monday in the first game of the current road trip with four scoreless innings at Burlington.

 

Wisconsin is 4-2 in the first six games of their eleven-game road trip.

 

Game three of the series is Sunday night. Luis Ortega (0-3, 5.40) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Kane County has Brad Keller (1-4, 3.09) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 6:30pm.

Winning is fun! Monte Harrison has had a time in the field lately, literally falling 3 times going after fly balls with some other miscues mixed in there. However he was awesome tonight making 2 spectacular plays and nearly a 3rd.

 

Kodi Medeiros has done pretty much what he's been doing since teams figured him out, he'll leave the ball up and give up some runs but he'll also have people chasing the ball over the place for strike outs. If he keeps the walks down, he limits the runs. David Burkhalter has been much better since 5/8, this tandem has been keeping the T-Rats in the game over their last 3 starts.

 

This was a real nice game for the offense with 12 hits, every batter collected at least 1, Carlos Leal (2-5,2B), Francisco Castillo (2-5), and Elvis Rubio (2-3) had multi hit games for the Rattlers.

Stewart Leads Miracle to 3-1 Victory

Fort Myers, Fla. - Kohl Stewart dominated over seven innings as the Fort Myers Miracle (21-22) defeated the Brevard County Manatees (18-24) 3-1 on Saturday at CenturyLink Sports Complex.

 

Stewart (1-3, 2.60 ERA) earned his first win of the season after he allowed just one run on five hits over seven brilliant innings. He did not walk a batter and fanned four.

 

The Manatees took the initial lead in the top of the second inning. With two outs, Garrett Cooper lined a double to left. Cameron Garfield then singled to right to score Cooper and give Brevard County a 1-0 lead.

 

The Miracle responded immediately in the bottom of the frame. Chad Christensen reached on a fielding error by Steven Halcomb with no outs. Two batters later, starting pitcher Jorge Ortega threw a pickoff attempt away that advanced Christensen to second. Bryan Haar then singled to left to tie the game.

 

Fort Myers took the lead for good in the fourth. With one out, Christensen reached on an error by Angel Ortega. After a fly out, Haar doubled to left. Christensen beat the relay throw home to give the Miracle the lead. Haar moved up to third on the throw. Ortega (3-4, 2.21 ERA) then committed a balk to plate Haar and extend the Miracle lead to two runs. Ortega lasted five innings and surrendered three runs, none of which were earned, on three hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out two.

 

Tristan Archer threw three scoreless innings of relief. He struck out four and lowered his ERA to 2.70 on the season.

 

The Manatees were held to just five hits in the loss, including two over the final six innings. J.T. Chargois recorded a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his fourth save of the year.

 

The two clubs will conclude the four-game series tomorrow in Fort Myers. RHP Eric Marzec (0-1, 6.75 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Manatees. The Miracle will send RHP Aaron Slegers (2-2, 3.18 ERA) to the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m.

Colorado Springs would come up just short of a gritty comeback victory as the Sox fell in a one run, 3-2 contest to the Bees before a crowd of 5,551 at Smith's Ballpark in Salt Lake on Saturday Night.

 

Sox starter Taylor Jungmann (1-2, 6.90) would match frames with Bees starter, and highly-touted Angels pitching prospect, Andrew Heaney through seven innings of work. The right-handed Jungmann would finish the day with seven innings under his belt, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and one walk while striking out seven Bees hitters.

 

Heaney's similar night would end with the left-hander tossing 7.1 innings of two-run ball, giving up seven hits and striking out six.

 

Jungmann's biggest challenge came in the home second as, having already recorded two quick outs, the Bees strung together three consecutive hits to score two early runs.

 

The Sox would score their first run in the top of the fourth inning on a Matt Clark RBI single, plating Yadiel Rivera to cut the Salt Lake lead in half at 2-1. Colorado Springs' offense would tack on another run to tie the ballgame with a Scooter Gennett groundout that allowed Logan Schafer to score from third in the top of the sixth.

 

Working into the eighth inning for the first time this year, Jungmann would give up a leadoff double to Alfredo Marte to start the frame before being pulled in favor of David Goforth having thrown just 86 pitches. Goforth allowed Marte to score the game's go-ahead run thanks to his own throwing error on Ryan Jackson's sacrifice bunt. The right-hander would work out of the inning to avoid further trouble, striking out two along the way.

 

The damage would be done however as Salt Lake righty Jeremy McBryde (1-0, 3.48) would stay on the mound in the ninth after taking over with one out and two on in the eighth to work Heaney of the Sox last offensive threat of the game. He would shut the door on the Colorado Springs offense and secure a tight 3-2 win for the Bees with a 1-2-3 ninth.

 

The Sox offense collected seven total hits, matching the Bees, as Clark, Schafer and Marte were the game's only multi-hit performers.

 

Colorado Springs wraps up their four-game series against the Bees Sunday afternoon in Salt Lake. Tyler Thornburg (0-1, 3.70) looks to lead his team to a series-split against Bess right-hander Zach Stewart (1-2, 4.21) with first pitch slated for 1:05 PM MDT (2:05 Central) at Smith's Ballpark.

HUNTSVILLE, ALA. - Starter Tyler Wagner allowed just two runs over 6.2 innings Saturday night in Huntsville, but the 24-year-old from Las Vegas suffered his first loss of 2015 in a 2-0 shutout at the hands of the Birmingham Barons at Joe Davis Stadium. The season-high six-game winning streak also came to an end as Biloxi was held to just four hits (all singles) and were shutout for the sixth time this season. The M-Braves won their fourth-straight Saturday and picked up a game on the Shuckers, now just 1.5 games back.

 

Birmingham (20-22) put the Shuckers behind for the first time since game one of Sunday's doubleheader with Jacksonville after adding a run in the fourth. The run was scored on an RBI groundout by White Sox second-ranked prospect Tim Anderson to bring in Chris Curley. The Barons added onto its lead in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by White Sox No. 8 prospect Courtney Hawkins, bringing in Marcus Lemon, ending Wagner's (L, 5-1) night.

 

The Milwaukee Brewers' ninth-ranked prospect and sinkerballer induced 14 groundouts on the night, but fell short of picking up his league-leading sixth win of the season. Wagner allowed two runs on six hits, two walks and four strikeouts over his 6.2 innings of work. Six of his team-leading nine starts have been quality starts.

 

Biloxi (26-17) could not muster much offense against Barons' spot starter Tyler Barnette (W, 2-2), getting just two hits. Tyrone Taylor (3x4) singled in the second and seventh. The Shuckers did draw six walks against Barnette, but stranded six runners in his 6.2 innings and finished 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.

 

Martin Viramontes worked the final 2.1 innings for Biloxi, allowing no runs while issuing two walks and surrendering two hits and striking out one.

 

The Shuckers will again attempt to take the five-game series on Sunday afternoon. Biloxi will send out RHP Hiram Burgos (1-0, 1.69), while the Barons will counter with RHP Frankie Montas (0-1, 3.60). First pitch is scheduled for 2:10 PM, with coverage beginning at 1:55 on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network.
