wow

harsh indeed

On the plus side it gets his arm a nice amount of rest. in 2014 RRR completely abused him & overused him and he's certainly seen a lot of playing time in 2015. Smith can be a truly great pitcher is not abused

Whatever the reason and regardless if everyone else is cheating or not, it was so obvious I wouldn't have cared if he had gotten 16 games.

Have some common sense, especially with HD cameras everywhere now, I don't have much sympathy for this kind of stuff.

8 seems harsh considering he could theoretically pitch 4 of those games. Pineda got 10 but he was really only going to pitch 2 of those games.

Tom Brady got 1/4 of a season for deflating footballs. Maybe his appeal will reduce it to 1/8th of a season. Integrity of the game matters even if the "cheating" seems trivial.

Yankees had to cover more innings for Pineda than Brewers will for Smith.

Also when thinking about just games you have to remember they don't get paid. Therefore to suspend a starter the equivalent of 4 starts he'd be losing over 20 game checks. Whereas the reliever would only lose 8 (assuming he pitches four of 8 as someone said).

That is kind of where I am at. I do wonder if it isn't that obvious a lot but nobody calls other teams out on it. I read where Freddie Freeman said he prefers they use it so there is less chance of getting hit. I'm kind of curious if there isn't sort of a gentleman's agreement that you should not call out the opponents on it on cold days or something. Not because everyone does it but because everyone agrees its the best way to reduce how many people get hit.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

If this is the case Smith should have been more discreet and not have it on his forearm for the whole world to see.

Yea, pretty dumb to have the stuff glistening right on the middle of his forearm.

Exactly, all he had to do was wipe the blatant brown stuff off so no one could see and it would've been fine. the stickiness would still be there to help him. If I recall, gonzalez actually said they noticed during the first hitter but didn't say anything because he didn't ever go to it. Once he went to it on the second batter he said something.

I don't mind the complaining at the ATL dugout. none was directed to the umpires as they don't have a choice once they see it. With the shenanigans between MKE and ATL the last couple years I like that he went at them. Everyone does it and for someone to snitch like that is a violation of the 'unwritten rules', especially on a cold night like that when the help is needed. And as Freddie said it's done to avoid his 96 mph heater drilling someone in the face.

Not that it matters, but he also looked ridiculous complaining about being tossed from the game.

He was upset with the Braves, not the umps. And while, yes he broke the rules, that's just not something opposing managers are going to point out. Heck, even La Russa allowed Kenny Rogers to pitch with an obvious hunk of something on him during the World Series and Tony all but said that he's ok with it because his own guys do it.

Have we determined whether or not Smith can be replaced on the 25 man roster for the games he ends up being suspended? IIRC, when MLB suspended Pineida from the Yankees for his incident a year or two ago, they had to play with a 24 man roster for those 10 games.

Hopefully, Jeffress will get suspended too. He is still on a pace to appear in 86 games this year. I don't think he will make it. It has been slightly better under Counsell though. Smith on pace for 76 appearances.
