A cryptogram is a puzzle where you are given a short quotation or phrase with each letter of the alphabet replaced with a different letter. You then have to figure out which letter is which and what the phrase says. I was working one the other day that I will paraphrase (since I don't remember the exact phrase) as:

Well Clint Coulter played Ulysses today with a 2-run homer in the 5th inning. He added a walk and a double, scoring 3 runs and driving in 2. Really though, the Manatees were awful yesterday and the Threshers were just as bad today. They made 4 errors. Chris McFarland was caught between first and second after a run scoring hit and nobody covered first so he got back in safely. Harold Guerrero faced 5 batters in the 7th, walking 4. The other worked the count to 3-2 before hitting a fly deep enough for Clint Coulter to tag up at second and go to third.

 

Chris McFarland and Taylor Brennan both had 2 hits, Garret Cooper and Jose Pena had doubles. Wei-Chung Wang went 5 innings giving up 6 hits and 3 runs. He had 1 walk and 5 strikeouts. Mark Williams and Preston Gainey worked 2 innings each to close out the game.

Coulter's Big Day Leads Manatees to 8-4 Victory

Viera, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees' (17-22) bats woke up in the middle innings to take advantage of defensive miscues by the Clearwater Threshers (19-21) to take the series finale, 8-4, on Education Day Wednesday afternoon at Space Coast Stadium.

 

It would be the Threshers who would take the early lead as Clearwater recorded back-to-back one-out singles off of Manatees starter Wei-Chung Wang in the top of the second. When Wang followed with a walk to Drew Stankiewicz, the bases were loaded for Emmanuel Marrero in his first at-bat for the Threshers. Marrero singled to right to score Willians Astudillo but that's as much as Clearwater would get as Wang buckled down by striking out Chase Harris and getting J.P. Crawford to foul out to left.

 

Brevard County would equalize in the bottom of the fourth with the inning kick started by a one-out double down the left field line by Clint Coulter. Following a Victor Roache strikeout, Garrett Cooper socked a double of his own, the reward of an at-bat that saw him foul off several pitches with two strikes.

 

The seesaw would continue in the top of the fifth, this time courtesy of a two-out rally initiated by consecutive singles up the middle by Crawford and Andrew Pullin. Chace Numata's double to deep center brought in both runners to put Clearwater back in front.

 

The game would be decided in the bottom of the fifth inning, which started with a Jose Pena double to left center. Angel Ortega then hit a chopper towards short that Crawford booted, allowing Ortega to reach and Pena to move to third. The 'Tees then cut the lead to one when Omar Garcia lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Pena. Chris McFarland's base hit put two on for Taylor Brennan. During the at-bat, Threshers starting pitcher Victor Arano uncorked a wild pitch, allowing the runners to move up. Brennan hit a grounder to second that was thrown away by Marrero on, what would have been, a close play at first. The error allowed two runs to score and gave the Manatees the lead that they would not relinquish. The play would also bring Arano's day to an end as

 

Jesen Dygestile-Therrien came in to pitch. On the second pitch, Coulter delivered a drive into the bullpen in left field for his Florida State League leading ninth home run of the season to cap a five-run frame.

 

Brevard County continued to add to the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Garcia reached on a two-out fielding error by Astudillo at third base. The inning was kept alive for McFarland, who would be presented with an RBI opportunity when Garcia stole second, his 13th of the season. McFarland would make the sequence with a base hit to center, bringing Garcia around to up the lead to four.

 

Clearwater chipped away at the lead in the top of the seventh as Crawford led off with a single to center against Mark Williams and then advanced to third as Garcia overran the ball. He would score shortly thereafter when Pullin grounded to short. Williams then gave up a single to Numata, coaxed a fly out from Dylan Cozens, a base hit to Astudillo, which brought the tying run to the plate in the person of Aaron Brown. He would escape further damage by getting Brown to ground out to second.

 

The Manatees would get themselves an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning, largely thanks to new Threshers reliever Harold Guerrero. He would walk Coulter and Roache to start the inning. Cooper followed with a fly out to deep right that allowed Coulter to tag up and move to third. The nightmare continued for Guerrero as he walked Cameron Garfield to load the bases and then Pena, which brought in Coulter for the 'Tees eighth and final run. Guerrero threw 18 pitches in just one third of an inning pitched. Just six pitches were thrown for strikes.

 

Preston Gainey came in to pitch the final two innings for Brevard County, retiring all six batters he faced.

 

Coulter had the breakout day amongst Manatee hitters, going two-for-three with two extra base hits, three RBI and reached base in three of four plate appearances. McFarland recorded two more hits, bringing his Florida State league-leading total to 51.

 

Wang (2-1, 5.82 ERA) picked up his second win of the season by going five innings, giving up three runs on six hits while striking out five and walking just one. He retired 10 consecutive hitters between the second and fifth innings.

 

The Manatees now travel to Fort Myers for a four-game weekend series with the Miracle starting at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday. RHP Brandon Woodruff (1-1, 5.34 ERA) will take the mound against LHP Brett Lee (0-2, 2.81 ERA).

VIERA – A short night may be just what Clint Coulter needed to get back on track.

 

Just 13 hours after losing to Clearwater, the Brevard County Manatees were back on the field and the outfielder had two hits including his ninth home run of the season in the Manatees 8-4 victory over the Threshers in front of 2,015 on Education Day.

 

“I hope so. I like where your head is at,” Coulter said when asked if he was getting back into a groove. “Every day is different, you can be great one day, or one swing and the next swing is different. I just try to go out there and get a good pitch to hit.”

 

He did just that in the fifth inning, hitting the second pitch he saw from Jesen Dygestile-Therrien over the left field wall.

 

“First pitch was a fastball inside, I felt like I saw it pretty good and then he came back with a slider, pretty similar spot just slower so I was on it pretty good,” Coulter said.

 

The ball went 371 feet.

 

It was part of a five-run fifth inning that propelled the Manatees to its first win in five games.

 

Brevard County starter Wei-Chung Wang had one of his better starts as a Manatee, giving up three runs in five innings while striking out five for his second win of the season.

 

Two of the three runs came in the fifth inning on three straight hits, the last a double by Chace Numata, scoring both runs.

 

Chris McFarland, Taylor Brennan and Coulter each had two hits in the game as the top of the order had six of the team’s eight hits.

 

It was Coulter’s first multi-hit game since May 7 and he had just four hits in his past 43 at-bats before Wednesday, when he scored three runs and drove in two.

 

“It is a battle. You have to put together good at-bats and be a tough out here,” Coulter said. “It is known to be a pitcher’s league but we have come in swinging it pretty well. Baseball can humble you so quick. It is a good thing, you don’t want to get too high.”

 

Brevard County (17-22) will hit the road for a weekend series in Fort Myers. Brandon Woodruff will take the mound looking for his second straight win.

Confused for corn dogs: Shuckers staff discovers frozen plaque

When the Biloxi Shuckers finish their current 55-game road trip, they will have countless tales from the road when they finally set foot in MGM Park on June 6.

 

However, it's hard to imagine them topping Tuesday night's comical moment back home in Biloxi.

 

A box labeled "MINI CHICKEN CORN DOGS" showed up at the Shuckers' local office a few days ago. It was blindly set aside and left to sit on a counter for a day or two before someone decided it was food and should be put in the freezer.

 

Late Tuesday night, staffers for the new Double-A franchise became hungry and general manager Buck Rogers considered ordering pizza for the group.

 

"One of the staff said that we've got a box of chicken stuff that had been left out a couple of days and they had put it in the freezer," Rogers said. "He said, 'It's not good anymore. Let me go get it for you.'"

 

When Rogers got a glimpse of the box, he realized it wasn't frozen junk food.

 

It also featured a label from the plaque and trophy shop that does work for the Milwaukee Brewers, the parent club of Biloxi's new Double-A squad.

 

It immediately dawned on Rogers that it was the plaque intended for Shuckers right-hander Brooks Hall, who was awarded the Minor League Pitcher of the Month Award for the Brewers system on May 5.

 

Rogers first response was, "Is it wrecked now?"

 

Rogers was still laughing about the frozen plaque on Wednesday, but he was reluctant to peek inside the box as he again made the drive to Huntsville, Ala. The team is playing home games there while Biloxi's MGM Park undergoes finishing touches for the opener.

 

Rogers plans to honor Hall with what he hopes is a still intact plaque on the field in Huntsville prior to Thursday's 6:40 PM game against the Birmingham Barons.

 

"It's just another day in Double-A," Rogers said. "I think we will play that annoying song from 'Frozen' when we present it to him."

 

Hall was announced as the Pitcher of the Month on May 5 after going 3-0 with a 1.23 ERA in April. He now stands 4-2 with a 3.92 ERA in eight starts for the Shuckers.

I hope it doesn't seem out-of-place to post here, but Biloxi OF Josh Fellhauer's teammates did a touching simultaneous tweet honoring Josh's mom Julie, who recently passed away. Her memorial service will be held today, Thursday the 21st.

BURLINGTON, IA - Trevor Gretzky's two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning snapped a 2-2 tie and gave the Burlington Bees their first lead of the game against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Wednesday night at Community Field. The Bees would hang on to beat the Rattlers 4-2 in the third game of the series.

 

Carlos Leal put the Timber Rattlers (11-29) in front with a two-out, two-run single in the top of the second inning. Dustin DeMuth reached on an error and Sthervin Matos followed with a single. Tucker Neuhaus sacrificed the runners into scoring position with a bunt, but they remained there until the hit by Leal scored them for a 2-0.

 

The Bees (20-20) scored a run in the bottom of the second. Wade Wass started the inning with a leadoff single. He took third on a grounder and scored on a grounder off the bat of Fran Whitten.

 

Whitten drove in the tying run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Burlington had runners at second at third after a leadoff walk, a single, and a sacrifice bunt. Whitten's grounder to short took a bad hop for a single to knock in Ryan Seiz from third base and the game was even.

 

The game remained even until the bottom of the sixth. Wisconsin starter Orlando Torrez had Wass down 0-2 on to start the count to start the inning, but wound up walking the Burlington catcher on 3-2 pitch. Gretzky hit an 0-1 pitch from Torrez over the wall in right for a two-run homer and a 4-2 lead.

 

Garrett Nuss, Burlington's second pitcher of the night, kept Wisconsin from mounting much of a rally over the final three innings. A leadoff walk to Sthervin Matos in the seventh went nowhere when Brandon Diaz lined into an inning ending double play with Matos at second base. In the ninth, Alan Sharkey singled to start the frame and Dustin DeMuth drew a one-out walk to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. But, Nuss struck out the next two batters to close out the game.

 

Torrez allowed four runs - three earned - on six hits with four walks and three strikeouts over five innings and was charged with the loss. Gian Rizzo (one inning) and Joshua Torres (two innings) combined for three frames of hitless, scoreless relief out of the Wisconsin bullpen.

 

The Timber Rattlers offense managed four hits in the game.

 

The loss snapped Wisconsin's modest two-game winning streak, but the Rattlers still have an opportunity to win the series.

 

The final game of the four game series is set for Thursday night at Community Field. Devin Williams (0-1, 4.50) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Keynan Middleton (1-1, 3.63) is set to start for the Bees. Game time is 6:30pm.
