Marlins GM to now be just M

After firing Mike Redmond, the Marlins appears to be naming their General Manager Dan Jennings and their new manager. Based off of his Wikipedia page, he has no coaching experience except for a year of high school, he never played in the majors and barely played in the minors. Of course this will be seen as Loria being Loria, which it is, but it's also an opportunity to see how someone who has spent basically zero time in a professional dugout can handle the job.

I'm thinking, clear case of Loria saying, you put this team together you manage it if it's supposed to be a winner. And of course when he fails Loria will Can Jennings at the end of the season. Which I'd understand personally. They gave away Jake Marishnick for Jared Cosart I believe. Only to have to have Mike Morse or Ichiro Suzuki play at 1b/OF where Marishnick could play. Gone is Heaney. Gone is Colin Moran. And it's like Milw in that their Pitching hasn't produced to the talent level you expect from them.

They still have Jose Fernandez to return. With Gordon/Yelich/Stanton, I think the team can be lethal and get on a high winning streak run. Cosart/Latos are far better than what they've performed thus far. I just don't get what Miami was doing by trading for Cosart last season(Fernandez was already TJ'd) for Marishnick/Moran+draft pick+ considering they now have Morse at 1b.

I have long suspected a moderately well trained chimp could manage. I guess we'll find out. Anyone who would voluntarily work for Loria must have missed that whole evolution thing.
There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

I didn't realize Jennings was 54 and has worked in baseball his whole life. It's not like he's some kid brainiac with a Doctorate in math who's never touched a baseball like many GM's today, he's actually been around the pro game for 30+ years. In game, he'll do fine. What will be interesting in the stuff we will never know that happens in the clubhouse that will determine how well he actually does.

The Marlins are spending something like 14M on their manager/GM this year... in paying their old GM, their current (now manager) GM, Ozzie and their now-fired manager.

Crazy.

That franchise is such a joke. Maybe he'll work out as the manager...but wow.

Yet they have two World Series wins to our none.

I'm actually curious about this now.

Say you took the 2001 Mariners, and had a chimp manage them. Basically teach it how to write on letter in the batting order for each different player, and have it pick the same lineup every day and run a standard five-man rotation. Probably train it to have the starter go six innings, then pick any random reliever for the remaining three. Maybe you could teach a chimp more, but let's say we start with this plan.

That's got to be at least a .500 ballclub still, right?

I can deny that. By "franchise" I was referring more to the "Miami Marlins" currently owned by Jeffrey Loria, and playing in a tax payer funded art project that no one goes to. I suppose I should have been more specific that I meant their current email.

I think this could be the future. Have a stats guy managing instead of a baseball guy. Wouldn't that be BF.net's dream??! Someone who plays everything by the numbers. Could be interesting.

Side note. That Ted Turner card looks like Will Ferrell playing Ted Turner. Probably a movie idea in there somewhere.
