I've been very happy that Roache has been able to keep it going as it gives me some confidence that he can continue to make the adjustments to do OK with the marginal contact, but it would sure be nice to see some improvement in that part of his batting line as the season goes on.

Clearwater 2, Brevard County 1

 

Brilliant start by Jorge Ortega was wasted by the Manatees. Ortega threw a 95 pitch complete game. He gave up an unearned run in the seventh, which tied the game, on a 2 out single. In the 8th, with one out, Angelo Mora tripled followed by an Andrew Pullin double which scored the winning run. Ortega's line was: 9 IP, 7 H, 0 BB, 6 K, 1 ER. Certainly one of the better pitched games this year by a Manatee.

 

The Manatee run came in the 4th when Clint Coulter doubled and came in on a Garrett Cooper single. Following the Cooper single, Brandon Liebrandt retired the remaining 17 hitters of the game. Taylor Brennan now below .200 in the last 11 games with only 1 walk.

Monday's Game Postponed; Tuesday Doubleheader Monday night's game has been postponed because of rain. The game will be made up Tuesday, May 19th as part of doubleheader with the first game beginning at 4:30 p.m. (MT). Both contests will be seven-inning games.

Rattlers win game one of eleven-game road trip

Medeiros & Burkhalter quiet Bees in 4-2 win

Kodi Medeiros pitched five solid innings and earned his first professional victory on Monday at Burlington.

 

BURLINGTON, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers started their eleven-game road trip on the right foot with a 4-2 win over the Burlington Bees at Community Field on Monday night. Kodi Medeiros was solid for five innings to pick up his first career win as a professional and David Burkhalter went four scoreless frames to earn his first professional save.

 

Wisconsin (10-28) grabbed the lead in the top of the first. Carlos Leal was hit by a pitch with one out and a wild pitch sent him to second base. Dustin DeMuth blooped a single to left to drive in Leal for the 1-0 advantage.

 

But, Burlington (19-19) answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning against Medeiros. Caleb Adams had a 3-2 count against him with runners at first and second and two outs when he lined a triple to the gap in right-center. Two runs scored on the play and the Bees were up 2-1.

 

Alan Sharkey tied the game in the top of the third inning on a home run to right. Sharkey's first Midwest League homer came on the first pitch of the third.

 

Wisconsin took the lead in the top of the fourth. They had runners at second and third with one out when Tucker Neuhaus grounded out to second to knock in DeMuth with the go ahead run and send Sthervin Matos to third. Later in the inning, Matos scored from third on a wild pitch.

 

Medeiros, the #1 pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2014 draft, didn't allow another run after the first inning. The left-hander scattered five hits and three walks over five innings with assistance from five strikeouts and some solid defense to hand that 4-2 lead off to Burkhalter.

 

Burkhalter, Milwaukee's 7th round pick in the 2014 draft, struck out four and allowed four hits with one walk over four shutout innings. The right-hander out of Louisiana has pitched seven innings against the Bees this season and has not allowed a run by Burlington.

 

Game two of the four-game series at Community Field is Tuesday night. Milton Gomez (2-2, 5.34) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Burlington sends Justin Anderson (3-0, 4.02) to the mound. Game time is 6:30pm.

Good way to start the road trip! I'm pretty tired of Jeremy Rhoades, he's pitched 16 innings in 3 appearances against the T-Rats this year and has struck out 22 batters. Thankfully the Kodi Medeiros/David Burkhaler tandem put up their best day of the young season and this was Burkhalter's best performance so far eclipsing the 3 inning scoreless performance he had against Burlington on 4/17. I know the results as a whole haven't been the greatest for either pitcher, but there's reason to hope for both guys.

 

Tucker Neuhaus did something so smart it caught me off guard as normally hitters just aren't out in front of the pitchers in this way at this level so I thought it was worth mentioning here. Sthervin Matos walked on 4 straight pitches in front of him so Tucker came up looking for a first pitch "get-me-over fastball", he got one and jumped all over it, but pulled it foul. That's my kind of cerebral play, it just didn't work out. Neuhaus played 2B once again, I like the positional flexibility Erickson is employing so far this year, it's borne somewhat out of necessity given the poor starts at the plate for so many hitters, but I'm down.

 

I thought Monte Harrison went yard to the opposite field corner by Mehring's call, but unfortunately it sliced just foul. Monte has struck out 48 times in just 97 ABs, he's just not putting enough balls in play to give himself a chance at this point, though his strike outs have been trending down as of late.

I think he'll be fine again soon. McFarland hit the same type of slump earlier. It's baseball and sometimes guys just lose it for a little bit. Sometimes bad luck where your hitting the ball hard but nothing is falling, sometimes you just aren't seeing the ball as well, usually, due to a combination of both you press and start attacking pitches you shouldn't. He has been a high walk guy this season so for him not to be walking at all means that he is doing just that, pressing a bit. The more you struggle the faster you sink.

Viera, Fla. - The Clearwater Threshers (18-20) defeated the Brevard County Manatees (16-21) 2-1 in a true pitchers' duel on Monday night at Space Coast Stadium.

 

Both starting pitchers, Brandon Leibrandt (4-2, 2.38 ERA) and Jorge Ortega (3-3, 2.44 ERA), tossed nine-inning complete games. Leibrandt allowed just one run on five hits and struck out five. Ortega surrendered two runs - one earned - on seven hits. Neither pitcher walked a batter and Ortega fanned six.

 

The Manatees opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth. Clint Coulter led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Coulter then advanced to third on a balk. Leibrandt had two balks in the game. After a strikeout, Garrett Cooper singled on a line drive up the middle to give the Manatees a 1-0 lead.

 

Clearwater tied the game in the seventh. Dylan Cozens reached on a fielding error by second baseman Chris McFarland. Willians Astudillo then singled to center and moved Cozens up to second. The next batter, Aaron Brown, launched a deep fly into center field. Omar Garcia tracked the ball down and was able to double off Astudillo at first thanks to a strong relay throw. Cozens moved to third on the play. Mitch Walding stepped up and singled on a liner to right to tie the score.

 

The Threshers took the lead for good in the following inning. With one out, Angelo Mora tripled into the right center field gap. Andrew Pullin then kept a line drive just fair down the right field line. Pullin's double scored Mora and gave Clearwater the 2-1 lead.

 

Leibrandt retired the final 17 batters of the game after a bit of a shaky start to his outing.

 

Entering Monday, there were just three complete games recorded in the Florida State League this season and two of the three were of the seven-inning variety. For Ortega, it was his second complete game of the year.

 

The Manatees and Threshers will play again tomorrow in Viera. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m RHP Eric Marzec (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will make his 2015 Brevard County debut. The Threshers will send RHP Colin Kleven (2-2, 4.66 ERA) to the hill.

Shuckers dominate Suns and earn historic doubleheader sweep Monday

Nick Ramirez blasted his team-leading seventh home run and now leads the Southern League with 30 RBIs (Jason Clark)

 

HUNTSVILLE, AL - Playing a doubleheader against Jacksonville for the second straight day, starting pitching dominated both ends of Monday's twin bill, as the Shuckers swept the Suns 4-0 and 5-1 at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville. The two wins provide the Shuckers their first ever sweep of a doubleheader iand extend the winning streak to three games as well as the first series triumph during the month of May. The Shuckers also extend their first place lead over the Mississippi Braves to two games in the Southern League South Division standings. The Shuckers have spent 29 days of the inaugural season occupying the top spot in the South Division standings.

 

Over the doubleheader sweep, Biloxi pitching held the Suns to just one run on eight hits and posted its fifth shutout of the season in game one. The Shuckers improved to 5-6 in seven-innings games. The win also bettered its record against Jacksonville to 7-2 on the year.

Jacob Barnes (W, 1-4) gave the bullpen some much-needed rest in a strong performance in game one, going five of the seven innings and allowing just four base runners on three hits and a walk. The righty from Fort Myers, FL allowed just one Suns' batter to reach scoring position.

 

Biloxi (23-16) got on the board with a bang in the fourth inning when Nick Ramirez (3x3, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R, 2B) blasted his seventh home run of the season out to right field, giving the Shuckers a 1-0 lead. Ramirez now ranks first in the Southern League with 30 RBIs and his seven long balls are tied for third.

 

The Shuckers opened up the floodgates in the fifth when Kyle Wren (1x4, R, SB) led off the frame with a single and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nick Shaw (0x2). That's when Biloxi started a doubles parade with Orlando Arcia (1x3, RBI, R, 2B), Ramirez and Michael Reed (2x2, RBI, 2B, BB, 2 SB) to add on three more runs and give the Shuckers a 4-0 cushion.

 

Damien Magnifico worked the final two frames and allowed one hit while striking out two.

Hiram Burgos (W, 1-0) made his first start since being promoted from Class-A Advanced Brevard County, and the former big leaguer did not disappoint. After working an 11-pitch at-bat to lead off the game, Burgos got Kenny Wilson down on strikes and collected five more in his five innings of work. Burgos allowed one run on four hits while walking four in the outing.

 

Biloxi grabbed the lead on a RBI double by Parker Berberet (1x3, RBI, 2B) that brought home Brandon Macias (2x3, 2 RBI, 2 R, 3B) and gave the Shuckers a 1-0 lead.

 

The Shuckers struck for four more runs in the fifth, against reliever Brian Ellington, as Tyrone Taylor (2x3, R, 2B, BB) sparked the offense with a one-out double. After a walk to Ramirez, two batters later, Reed singled home Taylor to add insurance for Biloxi. Macias tripled to center scoring Ramirez and Reed to give the Shuckers a four-run advantage. Wren singled Macias home in the next at-bat to make it a 5-0 game. Wren has hit safely in 13 of his last 14 games. He has also reached safely in 18 of his last 19 games.

 

Jacksonville (15-23) got through to the Shuckers' pitching in the sixth inning on a RBI double by Viosergy Rosa that plated David Adams from first, which brought the Suns within four and forcing Burgos from the game.

 

Austin Ross (0.2 IP, SO) and Wirfin Obispo (IP, BB, SO) held down the Suns offense to finish the game and secure the sweep.

 

Arcia's double in game one, paired with a walk in game two, extended his on-base streak to 20 games, setting a new franchise record. The hitless performance in game two snapped his hitting streak at 10 games.

Biloxi will go for its fourth straight win on Tuesday night against the Suns, with LHP Hobbs Johnson (2-1, 2.56) taking on LHP Chipper Smith (2-1, 3.69). First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:25 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. I keep having to remind myself that it's still early. Nick Ramirez is having a year like 2012 Hunter Morris so far though. Morris had:

 

.303/.357/.563 versus Ramirez .301/.370/.496 this year. Does this mean Nick has made some kind of breakthrough at the plate? He is more OBP heavy and less slugging heavy than Hunter.

He is almost 26 and is repeating AA so can't get too excited. Still his K rate is improving noticeably every year so he's putting more balls in play without sacrificing power which is a very positive sign. He probably belongs in AAA at this point but he's blocked by Clark. Biloxi might be the most fun team to watch in the system in a long, long time. There's hope that if the major league roster does get turned over in the next year or two, we are going to have some exciting young players to watch.

The Brewers currently have Donnie Wahlburg Murphy starting at 1B in Colorado Springs. Nick Ramirez isn't there why?

Like Briggs said Clark plays 1B pretty much every day so Ramirez is blocked. Both hit lefty as well so Ramirez will struggle to get a spot on the big league roster as long as Clark is still in the organization and don't see why they would move Clark since he has multiple options left.

AAA uses the DH a lot, and it wouldn't hurt either Ramirez or Clark to take a stab at playing in the OF. Ramirez even has a pretty good arm. They also have more than enough middle infield coverage without Murphy. Ramirez is not blocked. The Brewers just have an odd obsession with the Pete Orrs and Donnie Murphys of the world.
