Where does he project to go given the TJ surgery he had in March?

BA has him going to the Dodgers at 24 in their mock draft that was released today. MLB doesn't have a mock draft out but has him as the 22nd ranked prospect in the draft.

Clay Aiken was drafted by the Cardinals last year and converted to a starting pitcher. He's currently leading the minor leagues in ERA and WHIP.

What was Aiken's ceiling considered to be at the time of last year's draft and prior to the surgery? If he projects to move fast assuming his recovery goes well, I don't see why the Crew wouldn't strongly consider rolling the dice on a potential top of the rotation guy especially considering their dicey history in first round the past several years. It's not like you're expecting to get much more than 6-8 years of high end performance at the big league level out of a top of the rotation starter these days anyway.

His ceiling is still really high, but I guess the risk must be really high on him. Most have him going to a team that could have him totally fail and not shed a tear(Dodgers).

Out of curiosity, other then Baseball America's reports of Ray Montgomery scouting Funkhouser in-person as well as other Brewers evaluators at the ACC tournament, what experts have you seen report the Brewers are likely to go for a low-risk college arm? I haven't seen other reports tying them specifically college arms, but would be interested in reading them.

It was some lesser popular draft analysis. I'd probably have a hard time finding them...went on a draft reading binge a week ago. I guess the assumption is they will go for a low risk guy, probably pitcher, and someone they can get to the majors a little faster. Though I have seen one of the many prep outfielders being a target of the Brewers too.

They would have to have a lot of trust in that elbow to make that pick.

 

Like every year it is a total crapshoot...this year is even worse. Every week I feel like everything is different. I think they might lean towards a college player after a prep heavy top of the draft last year. Seems like that would be a logical route.

I could see Mark A intervening and telling them to pick Aiken in order to make the biggest splash possible.

Mark A would never do this. This isn't nfl or NBA where your draft picks have much instant value. What's the point? Hey we drafted a former #1 pick that u may be able to see in 4-5 years. Currently, he has a dead arm and prob won't pitch in next year but HEY! I made this pick for us to prove we are committed to our future.....

 

Melvin doesn't even really say much. It's Rays show 100% He didn't pass up GM interview and other top positions to have an owner or GM make uneducated decisions for him. Not to mention he is special assistant to Doug and prob Doug's replacement when he moves up to just president of ops.

 

All that said I'd love to take Aiken if it appears his arm will ever recover to where it once was. He is #1 overall talent and a lefty.point is Mark A isn't going to do anything and there is not too much of a splash unless u go all in like last year.

I'd love to have him. With the way this year is going, it's likely we'll have a top 5 pick next year at a minimum. If you hit a home run on Aiken, you are looking at 2 potential impact players arriving in Milwaukee at the same time. If you miss, it's pretty much what we've been doing the past 10 years or so in the first round. You just have to hope you don't totally whiff in round 2 and beyond. In a market like Milwaukee, you have to gamble on impact talent because you won't get it in FA. "Safe" gets you mediocre at best.

I guess I don't see that there is too much point in discussing Aiken, since whether or not it is a good move comes down to how his medicals look and we will never know that info.
