Sunday's Farmhand Birthday --

Well, we hope it's a nice 29th for RHP John Ely.

He went on the DL after just his 2nd Sky Sox start. This was our April 17th post --

(John) Ely came out to start the top of the fifth inning and quickly walked leadoff hitter Trever Adams before working a 2-1 count to former Sky Sox Thomas Field. It appeared that catcher Juan Centeno was walking out to the mound to make sure that he and his pitcher were on the same page when manager Rick Sweet and the Sky Sox training staff emerged from the first base dugout. Ely was removed from the game immediately and replaced by right-handed reliever Chris Leroux. After Centeno caught Adams stealing second for the innings first out, Leroux would finish off Field and outfielder Ryan Strausborger with consecutive strikeouts to end any further scoring threats.

The soon-to-be 29-year-old Ely has been placed on the Sky Sox DL, with RHP Tim Dillard activated to take his place.

Ely's injury has been listed as a "right elbow strain" on the Pacific Coast League transactions page. Considering Ely underwent Tommy John surgery in April of 2013 (pitched 31 games of relief in Boston's chain last year), that isn't a good thing.

Tampa 4, Brevard County 1

Javi Salas had one bad inning and it cost him the game. The Yankees turned one ground ball up the middle into 3 runs in the bottom of the 3rd after the Manatees had opened up the scoring in the top of the 3rd with a leadoff triple by Chris McFarland and an RBI ground ball by Taylor Brennan.

The Yankees then turned the ground ball single and two walks, two hit batsmen, an error and three stolen bases into 3 runs. The 6th inning was typical for the Manatees:

Brevard County Top of the 6th

Victor Roache hits a ground-rule double (10) on a fly ball to left field.

Garrett Cooper singles on a ground ball to right fielder Derek Toadvine. Victor Roache out at home on the throw, right fielder Derek Toadvine to catcher Kyle Higashioka.

Paul Eshleman strikes out swinging and Garrett Cooper caught stealing 2nd, catcher Kyle Higashioka to second baseman Abiatal Avelino.

Three more men out on the bases again today. Javi Salas went 6 IP, 3 H, 3 BB, 5 K. Pretty good outing except for the 3rd as mentioned. Chris McFarland tripled, Victor Roache and Paul Eshleman had two hits.

Kane County beats the rain and the Rattlers

Cougars top Wisconsin 12-2 in rain-shortened game

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Tucker Neuhaus had a pair of hits, including a double, and scored a run for the Timber Rattlers on Sunday. (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers/Ann Mollica)

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Kane County Cougars scored twelve runs on twelve hits in a game shortened to seven innings by rain to beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 12-2 Sunday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The win gave Kane County a three-game sweep of the Timber Rattlers.

Wisconsin (9-28) got off to a great start. Starting pitcher Cy Sneed retired the Cougars in order to start the game. Then, Monte Harrison and Dustin DeMuth singled to start the bottom of the first inning. Harrison took third on the single and DeMuth took second on the throw to third. But, Touki Toussaint, the #1 pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2014 draft and Sunday's starting pitcher for Kane County struck out the next two batters and got a grounder back to the mound to strand Harrison and DeMuth.

Kane County (18-19) loaded the bases with one out in the third inning on a pair of bloop singles and a bunt. Sneed got the second out, but Marty Herum tripled down the right field line to drive in all three runs. Herum scored moments later on a wild pitch for a 4-0 lead.

The Rattlers answered in the bottom of the third. Harrison drew a walk, stole second, and went to third on a ground out by DeMuth. Harrison scored on a grounder to first by Carlos Leal and the Rattlers were down 4-1.

Sneed got the first out of the top of the fourth, but Kane County loaded the bases again. Stryker Trahan reached first on a popup that was lost in the sun. Ryan Gebhardt sent a grounder to third that hit the base and bounded into left field for a double. Sneed hit the next batter to load the bases. Fenery Ozuna's flyball to shallow center was dropped and Trahan scored while everyone else moved up a base. Sneed got the second out. But, Victor Reyes tripled to right-center to drive in three more runs and the Cougars were up 8-1.

Toussaint allowed the first two batters of the fifth inning to reach base. Tucker Neuhaus doubled, his second hit of the game, and Brandon Diaz walked to chase Toussaint from the game with 90 pitches before he could qualify for the win. Nick Baker entered the game and got Harrison to ground into a force play at second. Baker threw wildly to first on a pickoff throw and that allowed Neuhaus to score.

The Cougars added to their lead in the top of the seventh against Wisconsin reliever Luke Curtis. Colin Bray doubled when a fly ball to left-center dropped after the outfielder tripped and fell going after the ball. Reyes was next and he lined a one-hop double off the wall in left to drive in Bray. Curtis got the first out, but Grant Heyman hit a triple to right-center to knock in Reyes and knock out Curtis.

Joe Munoz greeted reliever Josh Uhen to the game by hitting a two-run home run on the first pitch he saw and it was 12-2.

The Wisconsin grounds crew rushed the field after the final out of the Kane County seventh inning was record and managed to get the tarp on just before heavy rain showers hit the area. There was a one hour rain delay before the game was declared a final.

Wisconsin ended their seven-game homestand 1-6 and they are 1-14 in May.

The Timber Rattlers begin an 11-game road trip on Monday night with the first game of a four-game series at Community Field in Burlington, Iowa against the Burlington Bees. Kodi Medeiros (0-2, 5.65) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Burlington will send Jeremy Rhoades (3-1, 2.41) to the mound. Game time is 6:30pm.

Catch all the action on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:10pm. The broadcast may also be heard on Tune In Radio and IHeartRadio.

WP: Nick Baker (2-1)

LP: Cy Sneed (1-5)

Wisconsin Boxscore

So facing Touki Toussaint during a very lopsided and frustrating game got me once again thinking about all of the different players various posters wanted to take at #12 overall last year, where of course the Brewers ended up drafting Kodi Medeiros. I wasn't as high on Toussaint as others due to his control issues which is if I'm honest with myself the thing I look for first in a 1st round pitcher. Toussaint is pretty much the same guy right now, mid 90s heat, a wicked curve which breaks 2 to 8, and control which comes and goes. Since we're currently in a rain delay I took the liberty of looking up the careers of the rest of the 1st round pitchers we discussed prior to the draft in their draft order, all stats are taken from br.com and I leave individual early judgements to you:

TAMPA - The Tampa Yankees (21-16) defeated the Brevard County Manatees (16-20), 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at George M. Steinbrenner Field, taking two of three in the series win.

The Yankees brought over RHP Anyelo Gomez from extended spring to make a spot start after RHP Rookie Davis was deemed a late scratch. Gomez allowed a run on three hits in four innings of work, striking out four while not surrendering walk.

Brevard County broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third. Chris McFarland led off with a triple and later scored on a groundball from Taylor Brennan.

Tampa wasted no time retaliating. Billy Fleming walked to begin the bottom of the third. Abiatal Avelino replaced him at first base on a fielder's choice. With Tyler Wade at the plate, Avelino stole second. Manatee starter Javier Salas then hit Mark Payton. Avelino and Payton pulled off a double steal and Mike Ford hit a go-ahead, two-run single into center. Salas proceeded to hit Ericson Leonora with a pitch and walk Kyle Higashioka, loading the bases. Ford then scored as Ty McFarland reached on an error at third base by Tyler Brennan, giving the Yankees a 3-1 lead.

Salas (2-3) allowed three runs on three hits in six innings, walking three while striking out five for Brevard County.

A two-out rally provided some insurance for Tampa in the eighth. Higashioka singled into center as was chased home as McFarland hit a ball off the top of the right field wall.

RHP Matt Marsh (1-0) dealt two scoreless innings in relief of Gomez. RHP Philip Walby worked around a leadoff walk in a clean seventh. RHP Angel Rincon picked up his sixth save of the season, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out three in the final two innings.

Fleming (2-for-2, BB) had his first multi-hit game as a Tampa Yankee. Higashioka (2-for-3, 3B, BB, R) hit his first triple of his career.

Up next, the T-Yanks travel to Dunedin to face the Blue Jays in a three-game series. First pitch on Monday is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. LHP Chaz Hebert (3-2, 6.23 ERA) is scheduled to start for Tampa. RHP Luis Santos (2-3, 4.91 ERA) will get the ball for the D-Jays.

The Yankees return home on Tuesday, May 26th to face the Palm Beach Cardinals at 7:00 p.m. Fans can enjoy 2 for 1 Tickets, Scooter Dogs, SM Popcorn, Peanuts, SM Sodas, Programs & Speed Pitch from 6-8pm.

Shuckers split Sunday doubleheader with Jacksonville

Shuckers get walk-off win for the first time in franchise history in game two

Biloxi Shuckers

Shuckers players mob Michael Reed after hitting a walk-off sacrifice fly to end game two (Jason Clark)

HUNTSVILLE, AL - The Shuckers split Sunday's doubleheader at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville, dropping the opener 8-7, then walking-off for the first time in franchise history in game two, thanks to a Michael Reed sacrifice fly, 2-1. The series is split 1-1 as the two clubs are scheduled to play another doubleheader on Monday in Huntsville. Biloxi maintains their post at the top of the South Division standings after the game two walk-off win.

The Shuckers are now 7-3 in one-run games this season and 3-6 in seven inning contests.

Game 1: Suns 8, Shuckers 7

Jacksonville (15-20) jumped all over Shuckers' starting pitcher Brooks Hall (2 IP, 8 R, 9 H, 2 SO) with five consecutive hits to start the game to bring in three runs. The big blast of the inning came off the bat of Suns' catcher Chadd Krist, a three-run homer to give the Suns an early 6-0 lead.

Biloxi (20-16) responded with a four-spot of its own in the bottom half of the inning. Nathan Orf (1x3, R, BB) and Orlando Arcia (1x3, RBI, 2 R) reached base with one out and moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch with Nick Ramirez (2x4, 3 RBI, R, 2B) at the plate, who hit a two-run single to bring in both runners and make it a 6-2 contest. Taylor Green (3x4, HR, 3 RBI, R, 2B) followed with his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to right. The homer by Green was his first at Joe Davis Stadium since September 6, 2010 against Mobile.

The Suns were back at it in the second, plating two more runs to take an 8-4 lead off of a RBI double by Zack Cox and a sacrifice fly by Viosergy Rosa.

The Shuckers scratched across a run in the third on a RBI double by Green to bring in Michael Reed (1x4, R) to make it a three-run game. A fielder's choice groundout by Arcia scored Adam Weisenburger (0x2, R, 2 BB) in the fourth to bring Biloxi within two in the fourth at 8-6.

Ramirez doubled home Arcia in the sixth inning to inch the Shuckers within a run, but Biloxi could not get a run across in the seventh, ending the game on a 6-4-3 double play from Weisenburger.

Hall (4-2, 3.92) suffered his second straight loss on the mound and has surrendered 12 runs over five innings on the mound. Jacksonville reliever Greg Nappo (3-0) got the win and Sean Donatello earned his league-leading 10th save.

Game 2: Shuckers 2, Suns 1

Biloxi (21-16) won game two in walk-off fashion on a sacrifice fly in the seventh off the bat of pinch-hitter Michael Reed (Sac Fly, RBI). Orf started the inning with a flyout to right, then Tyrone Taylor (1x3, R) followed with a single and reached third on a perfectly executed hit-and-run single by Weisenburger (2x2, HR, RBI, R) to set the stage for Reed.

Jacksonville (15-21) got on the board first for the second time with a RBI double by Terrance Dayleg as the Suns opened the game with back-to-back-hits.

Weisenburger tied things up with a solo homer in the third, his first of the season and first at Joe Davis Stadium since August 2, 2014, also against Jacksonville.

Tyler Wagner (1x3, R) allowed just the one run in the first, but shut down the Suns the rest of the way. The Las Vegas native gave up six hits in his five innings of work, walking one and striking out two, but settling for a no decision.

Arcia extended his hitting streak to nine games and on-base streak to 19, with a single in game one and a double in game two, going 2-for-5. Kyle Wren's 11-game hitting streak was snapped in game one after an 0-for-2 performance, but stretched his on-base streak to 17 games with a hit by pitch in game one and a walk in game two.

The two teams will have another doubleheader at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville on Monday, with a matchup of RHP Jacob Barnes 0-4, 4.97) and RHP Trevor Williams (0-5, 6.11) in game one, then RHP Hiram Burgos (0-0, --) makes his Shuckers debut in game two against LHP Matt Tomshaw for Jacksonville.. First pitch is scheduled for 4:40 p.m., with coverage beginning at 4:25 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WGCM and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Sox Drop Opener With 6-2 Loss To Express

Round Rock Rallies In Four-Run Seventh to Claim Game One

By Ed Pearsall / Colorado Springs Sky Sox

Logan Schafer's first Sky Sox home run tied the ballgame at two in the fifth inning in Game One on Sunday. (Paat Kelly)

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - The Sky Sox and Round Rock Express would participate in a tight back-and-forth battle until the game's final inning in what would be an eventual 6-2 loss on Sunday afternoon in game one of a day/night double-header at Security Service Field.

Each of the game's starters matched zeros through the game's first three frames as the offenses combined for just three hits in that span.

Sox starter Tyler Thornburg (0-1, 3.70) would work through an extended third inning without allowing a run despite loading the bases on a two-out double by Rougned Odor and consecutive free passes to Tomas Telis and Jake Smolinski. Express centerfielder Jared Hoying came to the plate with an opportunity to give his team the lead. Continuing to impress, Yadiel Rivera snagged Hoying's screaming line drive that seemed ticketed for centerfield, saving at least two runs to keep Round Rock off of the board for the time being.

Colorado Springs' offense would take advantage of the nifty play in their half of the third, breaking through against Express starter Jimmy Reyes for the game's first run. Nevin Ashley lead off the frame with a triple off of the centerfield wall before scoring on Ben Guez's one-out double off of the left field fence. By inning's end, the Sox held a 1-0 lead.

Thornburg would run into trouble again in the next half inning, allowing two runs in the top of the fifth on a one-out, two-run home run by Odor.

Now trailing 2-1, the Sox wouldn't waste much time responding in the fifth. With one out in the frame, Logan Schafer drilled reliever Roman Mendez's (1-0, 2.25) offering over the right field wall to tie the ballgame at two. The long ball was Schafer's first since joining the Sox and it could not have come at a better time. Yadiel Rivera added a two-out base hit and stolen base to give the Sox a runner in scoring position and a chance to take the lead. Ashley could not come through however, popping out to second to end the inning knotted at two.

Thornburg would work a scoreless sixth before letting the game get away in the seventh as two doubles and two walks allowed the go-ahead run to score before the right-hander was pulled with two down and runners on the corners. Rob Wooten came in to relieve Thornburg, allowing a three-run home run to his first batter Jared Hoying. Hoying's round-tripper gave Round Rock a four-run inning and 6-2 lead that they would not relinquish in the shortened seven inning ballgame.

While he managed to avoid the big inning until that fateful seventh, Thornburg was not his sharpest as he allowed five runs on eight hits and five walks while striking out just two over 6.2 innings of work. Of the right-handers 102 pitches, just 52 of them went for strikes.

Spencer Patton took the mound in the bottom of the seventh for Round Rock to close out the game. The righty reliever would get off to a rocky start, allowing consecutive doubles to give the Sox runners on second and third with none out, before setting down the top of the Colorado Springs order to nail down the 6-2 win.

The Sky Sox fall to 14-23 on the season after the game one loss as Round Rock improves to 25-12.

Nick Additon (1-2, 5.52) takes the mound for Colorado Springs in game two of Sunday's twin bill. The Sox southpaw will face off with Round Rock right-hander Jose Monegro (NR) in his Triple-A season debut.

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - The Sky Sox sent 3,501 fans home happy after a 7-6 walk-off win over the Express in game two of Sunday's doubleheader at Security Service Field.

The Sox late-inning loss in game one of the doubleheader would not affect the offense's fortitude in game two as they would jump out to a quick 2-0 lead against Express starter Jose Monegro in the home first. Matt Long lead off the frame with a walk, promptly stealing second base before advancing to third on a Yadiel Rivera groundout. Shane Peterson followed with a strikeout before Ben Guez was hit by a pitch. Guez stole second base, giving Colorado Springs two runners in scoring position with two down and Pete Orr coming to the plate. Orr's penchant for driving in runs continued, plating both runners on an RBI single. Orr would also steal second, for good measure, giving the Sox three on the inning against Round Rock catcher Brett Nicholas.

Colorado Springs tacked on another run in the home second. Donnie Murphy and Robinzon Diaz would get into scoring position on a one-out double and single respectively before Matt Long's 4-6 force out at second scored Murphy to extend the early lead to 3-0.

Sox starter Nick Additon (1-3, 6.55) cruised through his first two innings before hitting walls in the third and fourth. Round Rock would pull within one thanks to a two-run home run to right-centerfield by Rougned Odor. The long ball was Odor's second two-run shot of the day, hitting his first off of Tyler Thornburg in game one.

The Express tageed Additon for four more runs in the fourth as Ariel Pena failed to limit the damage in relief of the lefty starter. Pena came on in the fourth with two runners in scoring position after Additon's wild pitch allowed Micahel Choice to score the game's tying run. Round Rock would tally three more runs in the frame on the strength of three more walks and two singles before Pena got the inning's leadoff hitter, Chris Gimenez, on a weak groundout to Orr.

In all, Additon would be charged with six earned runs on five hits and three walks over his 3.2 innings of work, striking out three along the way. Round Rock reliever Ricardo Rodriguez (1-0, 4.50) took over in the fourth after Monegro tossed three innings of three run ball, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out three. Rodriguez worked a scoreless fourth before allowing the Sox fourth run in the home fifth.

Matt Long lead off the frame with a double before Rodriguez issued two, one-out free passes to Shane Peterson and Ben Guez to load the bases. Pete Orr followed with a sacrifice fly to deep left field, scoring Long and cutting the Sox deficit to two runs. The RBI represented Orr's third of the game and would not be the last time his impact was felt in this one.

Tim Dillard (1-0, 1.17) would round out the arms used by Rick Sweet as he tossed two scoreless innings to keep the Sox within two heading into the seventh, and final, inning.

Still trailing by two, the Sox offense had a tall-task ahead of them heading into the game's final frame as they faced flame-throwing right-hander Luke Jackson (2-2, 5.27), needing three runs to avoid a twin-bill sweep. Colorado Springs' lineup would prove to be up to the challenge.

Jackson would load the bases after a fielding error allowed Shane Peterson to reach, a walk to Ben Guez and an infield bunt single by none other than Pete Orr. Jackson would be replaced by Express closer Jon Edwards as former, and newly added, Sky Sox third baseman Chris Nelson strolled to the plate. Nelson cashed in, drilling Edwards' third pitch of the at-bat to the right-centerfield gap to clear the bases and cap a three-run rally to give the Sox a thrilling 7-6 walk off victory.

With the win, the Sox improve to 15-23 on the season and split the doubleheader as Round Rock falls to 25-13.

The Sky Sox will look to build on the exciting finish on Monday evening as they take on the Express in game four of this extended five-game set. Drew Gagnon (1-4, 6.47) will lead the charge against Express right-hander Anthony Ranaudo (3-0, 2.87) with first pitch set for 6:35 PM MDT at Security Service Field.

Sky Sox Game 2 Boxscore

I was shocked at the attendance, the T-Rats drew more people today... and it rained. I looked up Colorado Springs' attendance just to see where they finished in the PCL last year and they actually drew better than Nashville but were a disappointing 12th out of 16 teams. Regardless they pulled off a double header split with a nifty come from behind victory here.

Peter Orr at age 36, still chasing the dream and stealing bases...

Rocky Third Inning Costs Manatees Series Finale

By Jerry Durney / Brevard County Manatees

A third inning filled with miscues was ultimately the Brevard County Manatees' (16-20) undoing on Sunday, as they dropped the series finale to the Tampa Yankees (21-16) 4-1 at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

It would be Brevard County who would strike first in the top of the third inning, which started with a leadoff triple to right center by Chris McFarland. He would score when Taylor Brennan followed with a ball towards shortstop that Tyler Wade misplayed into an error. Brennan would be picked off of first shortly after that by Yankees' starter Anyelo Gomez and then Clint Coulter grounded out to short. However consecutive errors by Tampa third baseman Billy Fleming would allow Victor Roache and Garrett Cooper to reach base but Paul Eshleman's ground out concluded the inning.

Tampa would immediately respond in the bottom half of the inning. Fleming would lead it off with a walk but would be forced out at second on a grounder by Abiatal Avelino. He would steal second with Tyler Wade at the plate, who then struck out. Mark Payton was then hit by a pitch from Javi Salas to put a second runner on to bring Mike Ford to the plate. Avelino and Payton then successfully executed a double steal and they would come around to score on a Ford single to center. The damage would continue as Salas hit Ericson Leonora and then walked Kyle Higashioka. It looked as if the inning would come to an end when Ty McFarland hit a grounder towards third but the ball hit the bag and caught Brennan in the chest, allowing Ford to score. The inning finally concluded when Brennan rebounded to retire Derek Toadvine.

Following a 5-4-3 double play in the bottom of the fourth, Salas would retire the last eight hitters he faced. For the day, Salas gave up two earned runs on three hits, while striking five and walking three in six innings.

The 'Tees had an opportunity to rally in the top of the sixth when Roache hit a ground rule double to left. Cooper followed with a single to right, but Toadvine was able to throw out Roache at the plate. Cooper attempted to steal second with two strikes on Eshleman, but the inning came to an abrupt end when Eshleman struck out and Higashioka threw Cooper out at second.

Tampa would get the insurance run they were looking for with a two-out rally in the bottom of the eighth. Higashioka singled to center off of Tristan Archer and then score on a deep drive to right that Coulter was unable to reel in at the wall. However, Coulter and Chris McFarland executed a perfect relay throw to Brennan to cut down Ty McFarland at third to bring the inning to a close.

Brevard County would put up a fight in the top of the ninth against Yankee closer Angel Rincon. Eshleman singled to right and then moved up on a walk to Rafael Neda. Angel Ortega hit a grounder to short that would force Neda out at second and when Omar Garcia struck out swinging, the Yankees had won two of the three games in the weekend series.

The Manatees return home on Monday to begin a three-game series with the Clearwater Threshers at 6:35 P.M. The two teams will send their top starter to the mound as RHP Jorge Ortega (3-2, 2.77 ERA) will face Threshers LHP Brandon Leibrandt (3-2, 2.66 ERA).

Wow, that's pretty for the struggling Nelson -- who else can remember a walkoff bases-loaded triple? Only thing more exciting would be if there had been two outs (there were none):
