Rattlers rally falls short against Clinton

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers almost made it all the way back from a deficit, but the Clinton LumberKings scored an important insurance run in the top of the eighth inning and held off the Rattlers for a 4-3 win on Tuesday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

 

Clinton (14-18) got on the scoreboard first. Back-to-back one-out bunt singles by Aaron Barbosa and Nelson Ward set the table for Chantz Mack. The Clinton left fielder drove a double to the track in right to score Barbosa easily. Ward stopped at third, but came home when a throw in from the cutoff man sailed to the backstop.

 

The LumberKings added to their lead with another unearned run. Josh Uhen walked Wayne Taylor with one out and a passed ball with two outs allowed Taylor to take second base. Chris Mariscal would single up the middle to drive in Taylor and make it 3-0.

 

Taylor also affected the game with his arm. The Clinton catcher threw out three Wisconsin players trying to steal second and another who got caught too far from first on a pitch in the dirt. Taylor's efforts allowed Jeffeson Medina to pitch six scoreless innings despite five walks and a hit.

 

Wisconsin (8-24) rallied against the Clinton bullpen with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Dustin DeMuth singled with one out and Sthervin Matos followed with a ground rule double to put runners on second and third. Alan Sharkey's hard shot to right was backhanded by Ward at second and a possible two-run single was turned into an RBI grounder. Tucker Neuhaus was next and his RBI single drove in Matos to make it 3-2. The hit by Neuhaus also extended his hitting streak to ten games.

 

Clinton got one of those runs back when Kristian Brito homered off Luke Curtis with one out in the top of the eighth for a huge insurance run.

 

LumberKings closer Kody Kerski retired the first two Wisconsin batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth. Then, Sharkey and Neuhaus drew walks. A wild pitch by Kerski allowed Sharkey to take third base, but pinch runner Luis Aviles had to hold at first base. Elvis Rubio dropped a blooper into short right-center on a 2-2 offering from Kerski to drive in Sharkey and send Aviles around to third base with the tying run.

 

Greg McCall lined an 0-2 pitch up the middle, but Mariscal made a diving stop behind the second base bag and the shortstop flipped to Ward covering at second to force Rubio for the final out and preserve Clinton's victory.

 

Wisconsin starter Cy Sneed allowed two runs - one earned - on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts, but was charged with the loss.

 

The loss was the eleventh in a row for the Rattlers. That streak includes an 0-8 record at home in the month of May.

 

Game three of the series between the Timber Rattlers and LumberKings is set for Wednesday night. Kodi Medeiros (0-2, 6.08) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Clinton plans to send Tyler Herb (1-1, 5.73) to the mound. Game time is 6:35pm.

An interesting note on Strike Outs...

I don't think this T-Rats line-up is so brutal. Yes it stinks that Denson started 2015 the same way he started 2014, that Gatewood is hurt (though he's with the team and taking BP), and that Harrison is also off to a horribly slow start. However Dustin DeMuth has played well, Carlos Leal is a great story, Tucker Neuhaus has been better at the plate than in the field, and I find Elvis Rubio intriguing. This team is just incredibly raw, the pitching has been as bad as the hitting, and they haven't been great in the field either.

 

Cy Sneed has be stellar all season, he topped out at 92 from what I heard on the radio, and his stuff is pretty average from what I saw on TV, but the defense definitely let him down today.

Viera, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees (15-16) received a clutch hit from Christopher McFarland in the 11th inning on Tuesday night in a 5-4 win over the Bradenton Marauders (16-16) at Space Coast Stadium.

 

Tied at four in the bottom of the 11th, Omar Garcia pushed a bunt single to lead things off. After Cameron Garfield bunted into a force out, Steven Halcomb grounded one to second. Garfield was retired at second base, but a good takeout slide allowed Halcomb to reach first with two outs. Angel Ortega then singled to bump Halcomb up to second. McFarland stepped up and lined a single into center field to score Halcomb and win the game for the Manatees.

 

Brevard County held a 4-1 lead after five innings, but Bradenton scored single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth to tie the game at four. Edwin Espinal hit a two-out RBI single to center to score Jose Osuna in the sixth against Jorge Ortega. Ortega did not factor into the decision. He allowed two runs - one earned - on six hits over six innings. He walked two and struck out three. Jacoby Jones hit an RBI single in the seventh and Austin Meadows delivered an RBI base hit in the eighth for Bradenton.

 

Clint Coulter opened the scoring with an opposite field, solo homer in the bottom of the first. Coulter leads the Florida State League in home runs (8) and RBI (25).

 

After Bradenton scored a run in the top of the second, the Manatees responded with a pair in the bottom of the frame. With one out, Jose Pena slapped a single to right. Halcomb singled as well to put runners on first and second. Ortega loaded the bases with a single to right field. McFarland lashed a base knock up the middle. All of the runners moved up 90 feet. Taylor Brennan then bounced into a fielder's choice that allowed Halcomb to scored from third. Brevard County led, 3-1.

 

The Manatees added another run in the fourth when Pena singled, stole second and scored on a Halcomb RBI single.

 

Tristan Archer was the first man out of the bullpen for Brevard County. He surrendered two runs on three hits and a walk in 1.1 innings. Trevor Seidenberger did not allow a run on two hits in his two innings of work. Preston Gainey (1-0, 0.00 ERA) received the win. He pitched 1.2 scoreless innings.

 

Andy Otamendi (2-3, 5.40 ERA) allowed the McFarland hit in the 11th and was hit with the loss.

 

The Manatees and Marauders will play at 10:35 a.m. on Wednesday morning. RHP Hiram Burgos (2-3, 3.67 ERA) will start for Brevard County. Bradenton will send RHP Frank Duncan (2-1, 4.94 ERA) to the hill.

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - The Sky Sox looked to be outmatched early in what would turn into a 10-3 come-from-behind victory against the Memphis Redbirds before a crowd of 4,207 at Security Service Field on Tuesday night.

 

Memphis left-hander John Gast would carve through the Sox offense in his first four innings of work, allowing just three hits while striking out a whopping seven batters over those frames.

 

In his fourth appearance for Colorado Springs, Tyler Thornburg tossed six strong innings of two-run ball on seven hits and a walk, tallying four strikeouts along the way. The two runs allowed by the right-hander came on a third inning mistake pitch to Redbirds right-fielder Stephen Piscotty, who drove the first offering of the at-bat over the left field wall for a two-run home run that scored Ed Easley and gave Memphis it's lone lead of the ballgame at 2-0.

 

The Sky Sox would finally break through against Gast in the home fifth. In the middle of a perfect night at the plate, Ben Guez would lead off the fifth with a bunt single and advance to third on a Gast throwing error. The game's other offensive hero, Matt Long, followed with a sacrifice fly to center to plate Guez and cut the Colorado Springs deficit to one.

 

Still pitching effectively, Gast remained on the mound for Memphis in the sixth and quickly retired the inning's first two batters. The turning point of the game would come in the very next at-bat, courtesy of Matt Clark. After immediately falling behind 0-2, the slugging first baseman with a flare for the dramatic would belt Gast's next pitch an estimated 443 feet over the right field fence, knotting the ballgame at two through six to give the Sox new life.

 

Scoring in their third-consecutive inning, Colorado Springs tacked on two more runs in the home seventh off of Redbirds reliever Keith Butler (0-2, 9.00) to take their first lead off the ballgame. After a Pete Orr triple and Guez walk opened the inning, Long would line a base-hit to right field to score Orr. In his first at-bat since being put in the game, Donnie Murphy followed with an RBI groundout to short, giving the Sox a 4-2 lead.

 

Jed Bradley (1-2, 9.45) came on in relief of Thornburg to start the seventh inning. After a scoreless seventh, the left-hander would allow his first two batters to reach in the eighth before being lifted for Michael Kirkman. Rick Sweet's other lefty reliever worked into, and out of, more trouble after taking over with two on and no out. Kirkman would walk his first batter to load the bases before striking out third baseman Scott More for the first out of the frame. Kirkman could not keep Memphis off the board however, hitting shortstop Greg Garcia with a pitch to force home a run, cutting the Sky Sox lead to 4-3. The 6-foot-4 veteran would escape the inning without further damage to maintain the slim one-run lead. Bradley would finish with an interesting line en route to picking up the win, tossing 1+ innings, allowing one run on two hits and a walk.

 

Clinging to a one-run lead, the Sox lineup poured on the offense in the home eighth, scoring six runs on four hits and three walks in the frame. Orr notched his 15th, and most painful, RBI of the season on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch before Guez followed with a two-run double off the right-centerfield wall. Long would cap his day in the next at-bat, plating Orr and the speedy Guez on a bloop single to shallow right, giving him four RBI on the game and his team a late 9-3 lead. Luis Sardinas added an RBI groundout to round out the scoring. Memphis lefty Nick Greenwood would be charged with all of the runs scored in the inning after being relieved by right-hander Kurt Heyer to limit the damage.

 

With a 10-3 lead, Sox closer Corey Knebel took the hill in a non-save situation to close out the game. Knebel allowed one hit while notching a strikeout in a quick ninth, securing the ballgame for Colorado Springs in a thrilling comeback victory. With the Sox win, Memphis and Colorado Springs both move to 12-20 on the season.

 

Drew Gagnon (1-3, 5.34) and Redbirds righty Zach Petrick (0-3, 5.76) will face off in game two of this four-game series on Wednesday morning as the Sky Sox look for their first three-game winning streak of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 11:05 AM MDT (12:05 PM Central) at Security Service Field.

JACKSON, TN - The Shuckers' offense woke up with a bang in game two against the Jackson Generals, clubbing 11 hits - four for extra bases, in Tuesday night's 6-3 victory at The Ballpark at Jackson. In the win, Tyler Wagner improved to a perfect 5-0 on the season - the first five-game winner in Southern League. The victory also places the Shuckers back into first place in the Southern League South Division with the Mobile BayBears dropping both ends of a double-header at Mississippi.

 

Nick Ramirez led the charge at the place with a 2-for-3 performance with two doubles and three RBIs. The big bash came in the fifth when the lefty from Anaheim, CA lined a double right-center with the bases loaded, clearing the bases and giving the Shuckers a 6-3 advantage.

 

Biloxi (19-13) hopped on the board first in the second with a three-run frame. Ramirez doubled and scored on Michael Reed's (1x3, HR, 2 RBI, R, BB) second home run of the season to give the Shuckers a 2-0 lead. Nathan Orf (1x3, R, BB) and Nick Shaw (1x4) followed with singles and Tyrone Taylor (2x5, RBI, R) drove in Orf with a single to center.

 

The long ball from Reed was the first for the Shuckers since Ramirez went yard against the Mobile BayBears on May 3.

 

Jackson (12-17) roared right back with a three-spot of its own off of a three-run triple by Steve Baron.

 

Generals outfielder Dario Pizzano extended his league-leading hitting streak to 22 games with a single in the inning.

 

Wagner (W, 5-0) became the first pitcher in the Southern League to reach five wins with his fifth quality start of the season. The Las Vegas native allowed the maximum of three runs over six innings, walked one and struck out four. In three starts during the month of May, Wagner has given up just four runs in 20 innings on the mound.

 

Orlando Arcia (3x5, 2B, R) continued his on-base streak with a three-hit performance and has now reached in 13-straight games. It was also Arcia's 13th multi-hit effort.

 

The Shuckers' bullpen bounced back with a combination of Mike Strong (IP), Jaye Chapman (IP, SO) and Austin Ross (SV, 1, IP) to lock down the Generals in three perfect innings.

 

Biloxi will try to pull ahead in the series with RHP Jacob Barnes (0-4, 4.79) taking the mound against LHP Scott DeCocco (0-2, 7.59). First pitch is scheduled for 11:05 AM, with coverage beginning at 10:50 on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network.
