The beards are just ridiculous -- newcomer LHP Michael Kirkman started his way before signing with the Crew, it seems. It's one thing when the team is playing well and you've got this "hockey playoff bonding" thing going, but when you're 10-20, it's just really silly. Of course, the Brewers hands are tied now, can't tick off the AAA boys at this point by telling them to at least trim things up (they might get testy and you might "lose them"...).

Space Explorers squander series finale against Tampa

The Brevard County Space Explorers were three outs away from sweeping the Tampa Yankees on Saturday night. Unfortunately, those three outs were difficult to come by. The Yankees scored five runs in the top of the ninth and turned a 2-1 deficit into a 6-2 victory.

 

The Space Explorers (14-15) were in the driver’s seat for much of the game. They scored first in the top of the third inning against Tampa starter Luis Niebla. Angel Ortega walked to start the inning and went to third one out later, on a Chris McFarland single. Taylor Brennan’s sacrifice fly scored Ortega, putting Brevard County ahead 1-0.

 

Tampa (16-14) answered back in the top of the fourth when Michael O’Neill ripped a double to left against Space Explorers starter Brandon Woodruff. That brought Mike Ford home with the tying the tying run.

 

The Space Explorers broke the tie in the bottom of the inning against Tampa reliever Chad Taylor. Garrett Cooper drew a one out walk and went to second on Rafael Neda’s single to center. That brought Jose Pena to the plate. Pena has been a hero in the last two games for Brevard County, driving in the winning run in Friday’s 5-4 victory and hitting a home run that sparked a seven-run third inning in Thursday’s 8-4 win.

 

Saturday, he had a chance to do something big and he did get into a pitch from Taylor sending to leftfielder Ericson Leonora, who was camped under it and seemingly lost sight of it, as it glanced off his glove and loaded the bases. Ortega grounded to third base, Tampa got the force at second, but it allowed Cooper to score, giving the Space Explorers a 2-1 lead.

 

McFarland’s single in the third and Neda’s single in the fourth, ended up being the only hits that Brevard County would muster all night. They went hitless against three Yankees relievers.

 

From there, it was all about pitching and defense for Brevard County. Woodruff went 4.2 innings, giving one run on five hits, walking five and striking out three. Preston Gainey took over and went two innings, giving up three hits.

 

“Gainey came in with a couple guys on base and worked out of a jam,” said Space Explorers manager Joe Ayrault. “He worked a couple more scoreless for us and then (Casey) Medlen came in with a couple guys on, worked out of his jam. Just a tough ninth, a five-run ninth.”

 

Kaleb Earls was responsible for that five-run ninth. He was called on to hold the one run lead and ran into trouble immediately. Abiatal Avelino started the frame with a single to left. Tyler Wade then a hit a bloop double to left, moving Avelino to third. Miguel Andujar was next and waited Earls out, taking three straight balls. He finally got a pitch he liked and deposited it onto the left field berm deck, near the scoreboard. That gave the Yankees a 4-2 advantage.

 

“First guy really battled. It was a good at bat by Avelino,” said Ayrault. ”Earls got ahead of him, but he battled and found a hole… and Wade, he’s a scrappy hitter man, a heck of a player and he hit a two strike slash double right over Brennan’s head.”

 

Wade had an at-bat against Woodruff in the top of the fifth that went on for 16 pitches. He fouled 10 pitches off, before Woodruff was able to strike him out. Ayrault was impressed with that at bat by Wade, as well as the ninth inning at bat he touched on.

 

The visitors added a couple more before they were done. Those runs would be charged to Earls as well, as he left with runners on, in favor of Scott Lieser. Earls would be charged with five runs in 0.2 innings of work and was charged with the loss. He gave up four hits and struck out one.

 

The Space Explorers ended their promotional run with Saturday’s loss. Sunday is a Florida State League off-day, in honor of Mother's Day. The homestand will resume Monday, when the Manatees host the Bradenton Marauders at Space Coast Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM (5:35 Central).

 

Right-hander Javi Salas (3-2, 3.00 ERA) is scheduled to start for Brevard County. He will be opposed by lefty Cody Dickson (2-3, 2.97 ERA).

Well last time out he was pretty darn good, but generally in his professional career the command comes and goes in spurts, if he has a high walk total it's likely he's giving up a fair amount of runs in that game as well. He doesn't get singled to death, it's walks and XBHs for the most case, not unlike Tyler Thornburg.

 

He's turned out to be pretty decent with the bat, it sure would be nice if he could find his way back to where he was last year.

The Sky Sox exacted their revenge on Monday afternoon in their 13-7 defeat of the I-Cubs in front of 4,152 fans at Principal Park in Iowa.

 

After falling 14-2 to these same I-Cubs on Sunday, the Sky Sox scored early and often, tallying at least one run in four separate innings off of three different pitchers.

 

Pete Orr got the Sox offense on the board almost immediately, drilling Iowa starter Dallas Beeler's third pitch of the game over the right field fence to leadoff the game with a home run and give his team a quick 1-0 lead. The long ball was Orr's first of the young season.

 

The Colorado Springs offense notched two more runs off of Beeler in the third inning after walks to Ben Guez and Orr would both come around to score on a two-out, Shane Peterson RBI double to centerfield.

 

Holding a 3-0 lead going into the home fourth, Sox starter Taylor Jungmann would run into his first trouble of the ballgame. With one out in the frame, Jungmann hit speedster John Andreoli with a pitch before walking former phenom Javy Baez to give the I-Cubs runners on first and second with one out and catcher Rafael Lopez coming to the plate. Lopez lined a triple down the right field line to plate both Andreoli and Baez, cutting the Iowa deficit to one. Lopez would score the game's tying run on a Junior Lake groundout, giving the game new life.

 

Jungmann and the Sky Sox offense would answer with no hesitation, scoring three runs in the Colorado Springs fifth thanks to four hits and an I-Cubs error. Jungmann's leadoff single would ultimately help his own cause as he came around to score the go-ahead run on Luis Sardinas' RBI single to left. Orr, who doubled earlier in the frame to move Jungmann to third, came home on Lopez's throwing error when trying to nab Sardinas in what would be a stolen base. Matt Long brought home the inning's final run with an RBI single to score Sardinas and give the Sox their three-run lead right back at 6-3.

 

Jungmann could not hold the Sox lead however, allowing three more runs on three hits and a walk in the bottom of the frame to once again tie the ballgame. After a leadoff double by Chris Valaika opened the inning, Mike Baxter walked before John Andreoli plated both runners on an RBI triple to right field. Baez followed with an RBI single to score Andreoli and re-tie the ballgame at six. After getting Junior Lake looking to end the tough frame, Jungmann would wind up striking out the side despite surrendering the lead. The big right-hander finished his day after five innings of work, allowing six runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five.

 

Both bullpens would trade scoreless frames after the 10-run fifth. The I-Cubs would crack first however, allowing seven runs to the potent Sky Sox lineup in the eighth inning on four hits, a walk and two throwing errors. Right-hander Blake Cooper (2-1, 1.65) would get stuck with the loss after allowing four unearned runs in his 1.2 innings of relief. Having already scored four in the inning, the big blow came on Long's two-out, three-run home run to right-center off of Iowa lefty Joe Ortiz. Orr, Peterson and Nevin Ashley each added RBI base-hits in eighth prior to the inning-capping homer.

 

Fresh off rejoining the Sky Sox after a stint in Milwaukee, Rob Wooten (1-0, 5.40) would earn the win in a scoreless two-inning performance as he combined with David Goforth to maintain the Colorado Springs lead. Goforth would allow one run on two hits and a walk over his two innings of work, striking out three batters along the way to secure the wild 13-7 win over Iowa.

 

With the victory, the Sky Sox earn a series-split and move to 11-20 on the season as the I-Cubs fall to 15-16 in the series-finale.

 

Colorado Springs will look to make it two games in a row on Tuesday evening as they head back home to take on the Memphis Redbirds in game one of a four-game set. Tyler Thornburg (0-0, 2.31) gets the call against Redbirds lefty John Gast (1-2, 5.79) with first pitch set for 6:35 PM MDT (5:35 Central) at Security Service Field.

A lot of fireworks early and not much later. The Marauders put up 5 runs in the 1st. Javi Salas could easily have gotten out of this inning with no damage. Austin Meadows led off with a chopper to second but Steve Halcomb could not throw him out. The second hitter hit a ground ball to third that got by Taylor Brennan for an error. After getting the third hitter on a popup, Salas gave up 4 straight hits.

 

The Manatees followed with a 5 run inning of their own in the bottom of the first. 6 players got base hits for the Manatees in the inning. Salas then threw 4 scoreless innings before he had to leave after the 5th.

 

Clint Terry got the first two hitters of the sixth out before giving up a single to Wyatt Mathisen after Mathisen fouled off several strike two pitches. Austin Meadows (1st pick of the Pirates in 2013 and 9th overall) then tripled in Mathisen and scored on a wild pitch. The Manatees got one back in the 8th on a Steve Halcomb double and a Chris McFarland RBI single. They left men on 2nd and 3rd and couldn't get anything going in the 9th.

 

Clint Coulter took a size 5 collar in this one. He was the only Manatee who failed to reach base at least once. Chris McFarland and Victor Roache each had 3 hits.

Marauders Hold Off Manatees, 7-6

Both Teams Score Five Runs in the First

Viera, Fla. - The Bradenton Marauders (16-15) and Brevard County Manatees (14-16) each scored five runs in the first inning before the Marauders escaped with a 7-6 victory on Monday night at Space Coast Stadium.

 

Austin Meadows started the game with an infield single against Javi Salas. After a wild pitch, Barrett Barnes hit a sharp grounder to third that couldn't be handled by Taylor Brennan to put runners on the corners. Brennan was charged with an error. Two batters later, Jacoby Jones lined a single to left to plate Meadows and open the scoring. Erich Weiss then singled to load the bases. Jose Osuna stepped up and cleared the bases with a double down the right field line and made it 4-0 Bradenton. Osuna moved to third on the throw to the plate. The next batter, Jin-De Jhang, lined a single up the middle to score Osuna and complete the first-inning scoring for the Marauders.

 

The Brevard County bats came out hot in the bottom half of the frame. Christopher McFarland beat out a grounder to short to start things off. Brennan then singled to center and moved McFarland to third. Two batters later, Victor Roache singled home McFarland to put the Manatees on the board. With runners on first and second, Garrett Cooper doubled to left. Both Brennan and Roache scored to trim the deficit to two. Cameron Garfield then ripped a single to center and scored Cooper. Steven Halcomb drew a walk to put two runners on. The next batter, Angel Ortega, hit a long drive to right that was tracked down by Osuna. Garfield moved up to third on the fly out. Omar Garcia, the ninth man to bat in the inning, pushed a bunt up the first base line. The Bradenton starter, Cody Dickson, fielded the ball, but no one covered first. It was an RBI single for Garcia and tied the game at five. The bunt single ended Dickson's night after he recorded just two outs. Both teams scored five runs on six hits in the first inning.

 

Salas would settle down. He did not allow any more runs after the first and lasted five innings. Salas did not factor into the decision. He surrendered five runs - four earned runs - on eight hits and a walk. He struck out four.

 

Felipe Gonzalez (2-3, 4.26 ERA) replaced Dickson in the first and tossed 4.1 shutout innings of relief.

 

Bradenton captured the lead again in the sixth against Clint Terry (0-1, 2.89 ERA). With two outs, Wyatt Mathisen singled to center. Meadows then ripped a triple to right-center and gave the Marauders the advantage again. Terry then uncorked a wild pitch to give Bradenton a two-run cushion.

 

The Manatees battled back in the eighth with Isaac Sanchez on the hill. With one out, Halcomb smoked a double into the left-center field gap. Two batters later, Garcia walked. McFarland then singled to left to plate Halcomb. With two outs, Sanchez threw a wild pitch to put runners on second and third. Sanchez retired Brennan on a grounder to short to end the threat.

 

Brett McKinney allowed a two-out single to Cooper in the ninth, but retired Garfield to record his fifth save of the season.

 

The Marauders and Manatees will continue the series tomorrow in Viera. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. RHP Jorge Ortega (3-2, 3.00 ERA) will start for Brevard County. The Marauders will send RHP Matt Benedict (3-1, 1.93 ERA) to the bump.

JACKSON, TN - The Biloxi Shuckers fought back early, but fell short in Tuesday night's series opener with the Jackson Generals, 8-3, at The Ballpark at Jackson. The loss, paired with a win by the Mobile BayBears, dropped the Shuckers into second place in the Southern League South division by ½ a game. Monday marked the first meeting with a North Division opponent and playing by American League rules. The Shuckers turned a franchise-best four double plays in the loss.

 

Brooks Hall (L, 4-1) posted his shortest outing of the season, allowing four runs on five hits, two walks and a strike out on 54 pitches. The righty's outing was just the third time this year a Biloxi starter failed to make it to the fifth inning.

 

Jackson (12-16) opened up the scoring in the home-half of the first when leadoff man Tyler Smith doubled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jack Reinheimer, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dario Pizzano. The Generals added on another run in the second off of Jordy Lara's solo homer.

 

Biloxi (18-13) responded with two runs in the third to tie the game with a two-out rally. Yadiel Rivera (3x5, 2 R, 2B, SB) singled, the second baseman stole second two batters later with Nick Ramirez (2x4, RBI, R, BB) at the dish, who singled in Rivera to put the Shuckers on the board. Michael Reed (1x3, RBI, 3B, BB, SB) collected his first triple of the year and brought home Ramirez to tie the game.

 

The Generals got both runs back in the bottom-half of the third when Reinheimer doubled to lead off the frame and came around to score on a high fly to right that Reed lost in the sky and landed on the warning track, which turned into a RBI triple by Dario Pizzano. The 23-year-old extended his hitting streak to a league-best 21 games. An error on Orlando Arcia (1x4, BB, SB) two batters later allowed Pizzano to score.

 

The Shuckers cut the lead in half in the top of the fifth after Rivera and Arcia had back-to-back singles to start the offense, and accomplished a double steal with one out. A walk to Ramirez loaded the bases with one out for Taylor Green (0x2, RBI, BB), who hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring in Rivera.

 

Once again, Jackson would get the run back in their half of the inning on a RBI double off the bat of DJ Peterson to score Pizzano.

 

Jackson would tack on two more runs in the eighth off a two-run shot from Reinheimer, and add another in the eighth on a RBI single by Dan Paolini.

 

The Shuckers will try to even up the series with RHP Tyler Wagner (4-0, 1.50), facing off against LHP Misael Siverio (1-2, 4.15). Shuckers turned four double plays, were successful in all three of their basestealing attempts, had 14 baserunners via hit or walk, and yet still lost by five; it's time to really take note of Tyrone Taylor's incredibly quiet spring -- 0-for-4 here with three K's. Strikeouts not the problem for him up until tonight, but we need to temper the timeline for the 21-year-old; at this point, we just need to see production at the plate and/or the basepaths (just 4 XBH's, just two SB's).

Clinton cracks Rattlers 8-3

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Clinton LumberKings hit a pair of home runs and defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 8-3 Monday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The loss was the tenth straight for the Timber Rattlers.

 

Clinton (13-18) scored two runs in the top of the second inning to grab the early lead. Joe DeCarlo started the inning with a triple to right-center. Alex Jackson's bloop to left dropped in for an RBI double and a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Taylor Zeutenhorst drove in Jackson with a single.

 

Wisconsin starting pitcher Angel Ventura retired the first two batters of the top of the fifth inning, but walked Aaron Barbosa on a 3-2 pitch. Nelson Ward followed with a bunt single. Then, Estarlyn Morales doubled to knock in both runners and knock Ventura out of the game.

 

The Rattlers (8-23) got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth. Luis Aviles tripled with one out. Mitch Meyer drove in Aviles and the Rattlers were only down 4-1.

 

The LumberKings got that run back in the top of the sixth when Zeutenhorst hit a home run over the Wisconsin bullpen in right-center field. The homer, the first of the season for Zeutonhorst, came with two outs against reliever Gian Rizzo.

 

Clinton tacked on two more runs in the seventh against Orlando Torrez. Jackson knocked in a pair of runs with a two-out single to make the score 7-1.

 

Kristian Brito made it 8-1 with a homer to the Wisconsin bullpen with one out in the eighth inning.

 

Wisconsin loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the ninth inning on three consecutive singles by Carlos Leal, Elvis Rubio, and Dustin DeMuth. Alan Sharkey grounded into a 5-4-3 double play to allow Leal to score. Aviles doubled to score Rubio, but that was the final run of the game.

 

Eddie Campbell made his 2015 debut for the LumberKings as their starting pitcher and picked up the win. Campbell allowed a run on three hits and struck out one in the game.

 

Game two of the four-game series is Tuesday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Cy Sneed (1-3, 1.30) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Clinton will counter with Jeffeson Medina (0-3, 3.96). Game time is 12:05pm.

 

There will be an interactive weather presentation given by Fox 11 Meteorologists from 10:30AM-11AM on top of the first base dugout and is free for anybody with a ticket for the game as part of Fox 11 Weather Day. Fox 11 will have their Green Screen on hand for attendees to test their Meteorology skills. The Wisconsin Storm Chasers are also scheduled to attend with some of their vehicles as well. Show your business card when you purchase a ticket and for $13.50 you will receive a box seat ticket, a beverage and your choice of brat or hot dog. I admit that even with an off day this losing streak is starting to get to me, but Chris was in good spirits again tonight. The audio was alternating volume again tonight so parts of the game were hard to listen to but Mehring said something like, "he's got the most bar league softball swing I've seen in baseball" of Joe DeCarlo literally right before the triple. It was pretty funny as he quipped something like, "but it's hard to argue with the result".

 

The T-Rats only had 2 SOs as a team, far and away the lowest total of the season.

 

Angel Ventura hadn't given up more than 1 earned run in an appearance prior to today. Elvis Rubio (2-4) had the other multi hit game for the Rattlers.
