PEARL, MS - The Shuckers got just the start they were looking for to end a three-game losing streak Sunday afternoon out of the right arm of 22-year-old Jorge Lopez (W, 3-2). Biloxi shutout the Mississippi Braves 2-0 at Trustmark Park in Pearl. Lopez had his no-hit bid snapped in the sixth inning, but worked seven one-hit innings, earning his third win in four starts. Lopez also picked up his first career base hit and RBI with a two out single that snapped a scoreless tie in the fifth.

 

Lopez hit the second batter he faced in the first inning, but set down the next 14 Braves to step into the batter's box before a one-out single by Eric Garcia broke up the righty's no-hit bid in the sixth. The Puerto Rican native tied a career high with eight strikeouts and did not issue a walk over his seven innings. Over his last starts, Lopez is 3-0, giving up just two runs in 23 innings.

 

Lopez helped his own cause at the plate with a RBI single in the fifth to give Biloxi a 1-0 advantage and its first lead since game one on Wednesday.

Jaye Chapman allowed a leadoff single in the eighth to KD Kang, but a sacrifice bunt and two straight strikeouts got the reliever out of the threat.

 

Biloxi (18-12) added an insurance run in the bottom-half of the inning on a squeeze bunt by Kyle Wren (1x4, RBI), bringing in Yadiel Rivera (sac bunt) to put the Shuckers up 2-0.

 

Damien Magnifico came on to attempt his third save in as many opportunities and surrendered back-to-back singles to start the inning from Corban Joseph and Mallex Smith. Rio Ruiz walked to load the bases. But, the former Oklahoma Sooner induced a game-ending 6-4-3 double play to Seth Loman securing the fourth shutout of the season.

 

The win ended a 10-game home stand for the Shuckers, in which they finished 4-6 against the Mobile BayBears and Mississippi (14-14) in Huntsville and Pearl. Orlando Arcia was 1-for-4 and extended his on-base streak to 11 games.

 

Biloxi will head to Tennessee to start a five-game series with the Jackson Generals starting on Monday. Game one will feature reigning Milwaukee Brewers' Pitcher of the Month RHP Brooks Hall (4-0, 1.32), while the Generals will have LHP Danny Hultzen (0-0, 0.00) make his second start of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM, with coverage beginning at 6:50 on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. The 2011 2nd rounder didn't sign until August 11th that year under old MLB draft rules, but that year counts against his roster status service time, and he'll need to be added to the 40-man roster this fall (he assuredly will be, barring major injury). Iowa Scores 14 Runs in First Four Innings In One-Sided Victory

The Iowa Cubs offense was relentless early in their 14-2 beating of the Sky Sox in front of 5,138 fans at Principal Park on Sunday afternoon.

 

Sox starter Tyler Cravy (2-4, 5.40) was tagged for five runs on five hits and three walks, notching a strikeout over two innings of work in a down performance.

 

Chris Leroux's night would prove to be a little tougher. The right-hander would take the hill in relief of Cravy to start the home third. He would allow a total of ten hits, six of them coming in the I-Cubs' eight-run fourth.

 

The Sky Sox bullpen would hold Iowa's offense scoreless over the final 4.1 innings as a four-man combination of Michael Kirkman, Jim Henderson, Nick Additon and Ariel Pena that allowed just one hit while striking out seven total batters. I-Cubs catcher Taylor Teagarden provided the noise in that loud fourth inning, blasting a three-run shot to left field on a 2-2 pitch from Leroux.

 

The Sky Sox offense would break through late in the ballgame, scoring a run in the seventh and eight innings off of right-hander Michael Wagner after being held scoreless through six innings by starter Carlos Pimentel (2-2, 4.28).

 

Colorado Springs' runs would come on a pair of RBI doubles, courtesy of Luis Sardinas in the seventh and Bryan Petersen in the eighth. Each finished with a pair of hits and an RBI on the ballgame.

 

The I-Cubs registered 16 total hits en route to improving their record to and even .500 at 15-15. With the loss, the Sky Sox fall to 10-20 on the season.

Coming off a strong six inning relief performance, Taylor Jungmann (1-1, 6.91) will look to get the Sox back on track when he takes the mound against Cubs starter Dallas Beeler (0-2, 9.53) on Monday morning. First pitch is slated for 11:08 AM MDT (12:08 PM Central) at Principal Park in Iowa.

Lopez dominates in Shuckers' shutout

Brewers' No. 12 prospect ties career high with eight strikeouts

Biloxi manager Carlos Subero wasn't concerned when Jorge Lopez looked uncertain in his first couple of starts. This is the right-hander's first time in Double-A, you expect some jitters.

 

Subero anticipated Lopez would gain confidence, but he didn't expect so much aplomb by early May.

 

"Today was something special," Subero said. "It was, 'This is my game.' He took ownership and executed with it."

 

The Brewers' No. 12 prospect tied a career high with eight strikeouts, going seven innings in the Shuckers' 2-0 win over Mississippi. He carried a no-hit bid into the sixth and ended up allowing just one knock.

 

The 2011 second-round pick threw 61 of 90 pitches for strikes, did not walk a batter for the first time this year and dropped his ERA to 2.70 in six starts. Over 30 innings, he's struck out 27 and walked 14 in his first Southern League stint.

 

"He was very confident," Subero said. "Especially in Double-A, when they get here, they might be a little tentative. That's normal for everybody. He was very confident on the mound today and I liked that. You could tell right from the beginning."

 

Lopez (3-2) came out looking like a different pitcher Sunday, something that's built as the season's gone on. He faced the minimum through five innings -- the only baserunner to reach was Emerson Landoni on a hit-by-pitch, and he was thrown out trying to steal second. Lopez picked up four strikeouts over the first two innings, then needed only 37 pitches to work through innings three, four and five.

 

After Landoni reached, Lopez retired 14 consecutive batters, maintaining a no-hitter until Eric Garcia lined a single to right with one out in the sixth. The 22-year-old right-hander retired five straight after that, striking out Seth Lohman to complete his seven-inning stint.

 

"He was able to spot his fastball to both sides of the plate," Subero said. "He had a good changeup working for him. His curve, he had a feel for it."

 

Most notable from Lopez's repertoire was the command of his breaking ball. Subero said Sunday was the best he's seen Lopez locate the offering.

 

"He's always had a good curve," Subero said. "The last couple of outings, he was able to use it but not like tonight. He had a feel for it. It was so good, he was throwing it behind in the count. He struck out a right-hander on a 3-2 curve, and it even surprised us in the dugout; we weren't expecting that. Then he threw one to the next hitter, 1-0, and he was on a roll."

 

Lopez spent all of last season with Class A Advanced Brevard County, where he posted a 4.58 ERA in 25 starts. He struck out 119 batters over 137 2/3 innings and induced more groundouts than flyouts. He impressed the Brewers with his mental fortitude, pitching through the season while his infant son, Mikael, waited for an intestinal transplant to help treat an autoimmune disease.

 

Lopez also picked up his first professional hit and RBI on a single in the fifth inning that produced the game's first run.

 

After Jaye Chapman struck out two and allowed a hit in the eighth, Damien Magnifico loaded the bases in the ninth but got Loman to bounce into a game-ending double play for his third save.

 

The game lasted just one hour and 59 minutes, two minutes longer than the shortest nine-inning game in M-Braves history -- the team played a 1:57 contest against Birmingham on May 8, 2010.

Well I'm about to head down to Principal Park for game four of the Sky Sox, iCubs series. Yesterday was interesting. The Cubs seem to be in a situation where the depth of talent is so deep in their minor league system that they may be able to trade some younger minor league players for bullpen help later in the year if they're anywhere in the conversation.

 

Now seeing the Sky Sox three times in person, I'm really curious to see how long it'll be until some of our older vets get moved for younger guys.

 

I didn't realize Luis Sardinas was hitting so close to .300 until yesterday. I guess that's a positive. Absolutely no power.

Scouts like the D, the versatility, the speed, etc, but is there enough in his bat for him to be a regular in the big leagues, or is he destined for a career as a utility player? He's got to be smart at the plate to be a starter, to get the most out of his talents, because he won't hit many mistakes into the seats.

So, what you're saying is we got a utility IF, average-ish bullpen arm and a TBD lower minors pitcher for Gallardo? Sounds about fair.
