Hiram Burgos went 6 innings to get the win. A 7 run 3rd inning keyed by a two out three run Home Run by Rafael Neda was the difference in this game. Neda ended up with 4 RBIs. Stephen Peterson worked the final three innings, yielding a two run home run.

Viera, Fla. - The Brevard County Space Explorers (13-14) scored seven runs in the third inning en route to an 8-4 victory over the Tampa Yankees (15-13) on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium.

 

With the Yankees leading 1-0, Jose Pena stepped to the plate to lead off the third inning against Tampa starter Chaz Hebert. Pena launched a solo home run to left to tie the game. It was Pena's first homer of the season. Angel Ortega then singled to left and Omar Garcia pushed a bunt single past the mound towards second to put two on with nobody out. A Chris McFarland walk loaded the bases. The next batter, Taylor Brennan, laced a single to center field. Ortega and Garcia scored; center fielder Mark Payton bobbled the ball and allowed Brennan and McFarland to advance to second and third, respectively. Clint Coulter then drilled an RBI single to left to plate McFarland and move Brennan up to third. The Space Explorers led 4-1. Hebert struck out Victor Roache and Garrett Cooper. Rafael Neda stepped to the plate with runners on the corners and two outs. Neda roped a three-run home run over the left field wall to make it 7-1 Space Explorers For Neda, it was his first home run of the year. Brevard County sent 11 men to the plate in the third and scored seven runs on six hits.

 

After the explosive inning, Brevard County starter Hiram Burgos (2-3, 3.67 ERA) allowed a leadoff walk to Mike Ford and back-to-back singles to Mark Payton and Danny Oh. Oh's RBI single scored Ford and cut the Space Explorers lead to five. Burgos settled down nicely, however. He got Ericson Leonora to bounce into a double play and fanned Kyle Higashioka to end the frame. Burgos recorded the win. He allowed two runs on four hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out seven. He is now tied for the Florida State League lead with 41 strikeouts on the season.

 

The Space Explorers added to the lead in the seventh inning. Coulter started the frame with a single to left. Roache and Cooper walked consecutively to load the bases with nobody out. Neda drove in another run on a sacrifice fly to right. The Space Explorers led 8-2.

 

Tampa's Miguel Andujar hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to complete the scoring.

 

Hebert (2-2, 5.94) was hit with the loss. He recorded just two outs in the third inning and surrendered seven runs on six hits.

 

Stephen Peterson recorded a three-inning save for his first save of the year. He gave up the two-run homer to Andujar, but nothing more. Peterson fanned three.

 

The Space Explorers and the Yankees will continue the series tomorrow at Space Coast Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Wei-Chung Wang (1-1, 6.04 ERA) will toe the rubber for Brevard County. Tampa will send Jonathan Holder to the mound.

Quad Cities gets past the Rattlers 4-1

A pair of streaks continue

DAVENPORT, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers took an early lead and had some late chances, but could not stop two streaks. The Quad Cities River Bandits defeated the Rattlers 4-1 Thursday night at Modern Woodmen Park to extend their winning streak to nine games and send Wisconsin to their seventh straight loss.

 

Brandon Diaz put the Timber Rattlers (8-20) in front in the top of the first inning. The Wisconsin center fielder lined an opposite field home run on a 2-2 pitch from Chris Lee with one out and the Rattlers were up 1-0 on Diaz's first home run of the season.

 

Wisconsin starting pitcher Cy Sneed retired the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the first inning, but gave up a double to Derek Fisher. Jacob Nottingham followed with an RBI single and the game was tied. Bryan Muniz was next and his grounder to short for what would have been an inning-ending force out at second was missed for an error and the inning kept going for the River Bandits (22-6). Alex Hernandez made the Rattlers pay for extending the inning by driving in Nottingham with a single for a 2-1 lead.

 

The Timber Rattlers put at least one runner on base in each of the five innings tossed by Quad Cities starter Chris Lee, but they could not get the big hit. Lee allowed one run on three hits and two walks as the eventual winning pitcher.

 

In the sixth, Tucker Neuhaus extended his hitting streak to eight games with a two-out bunt hit against River Bandits reliever Kevin Comer. Third baseman Kristian Trompiz fielded the ball with his bare hand, but did not throw to first. Trompiz thought time had been called and he flipped the ball out of play…for some reason. Time had not been called and Neuhaus was awarded third base. But, the Rattlers could not capitalize and Neuhaus was stranded at third with the Rattlers down 2-1.

 

Wisconsin starter Cy Sneed did his part after the first inning. The right-hander didn't allow a hit after the first inning and retired the side in order from the third through the sixth innings. Sneed allowed two runs - one earned - on three hits and struck out five, but left trailing 2-1.

 

In the seventh, the Rattlers nearly took their starting pitcher off the hook. Greg McCall doubled to start the inning. Luis Aviles beat out a bunt single and Wisconsin had runners at the corners. Comer struck out Mitch Meyer for the first out, but hit Diaz to load the bases. Comer regrouped and struck out Carlos Leal and Sthervin Matos to strand all three Rattlers on base and preserve the one-run lead.

 

Quad Cities added to their lead in the bottom of the seventh against reliever Josh Uhen. Trompiz singled with two outs. Jason Martin doubled to left-center to knock in an insurance run for the River Bandits.

 

They would add one more run in the bottom of the eighth. Nottingham collected the third of three straight one-out singles to plate the run to make it 4-1.

 

The only inning the Rattlers went down in order on the night was the top of the ninth when Comer struck out the side. The final nine outs of the game recorded by Comer were strikeouts and he picked up his first save of the season.

 

Wisconsin stranded ten runners in the game and were 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Meyer went 0-for-5 and saw his hitting streak end at nine games.

 

Game two of the series is set for Friday night at Modern Woodmen Park. David Burkhalter (0-2, 7.04) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Quad Cities has not named their starter for Friday yet. Game time is 7:00pm.

Thornburg's Bat Can't Carry Sox In 2-1 Loss

Right-hander Adds RBI Triple to One-run, Five Inning Performance

The Sky Sox fell in another one-run contest with the Redbirds in a 2-1 loss in front of 2,136 fans at AutoZone Park in Memphis on Thursday evening.

 

Right-hander Tyler Thornburg would toss five innings of one-run ball in his third outing for the Sox since being sent to Triple-A to stretch out his innings. He would allow two hits and three walks while striking out two over that time. The run would come in the very first inning as Xavier Scruggs scored Dean Anna on a sacrifice fly after Anna lead off the home half with a single.

 

The Sky Sox would score their lone run in the fifth, thanks to Thornburg's own two-out RBI triple that plated Nevin Ashley to knot the game at one.

 

Redbirds starter Zach Petrick twirled an impressive six inning outing, allowing just the one run on four hits and two walks while striking out three in a no decision.

 

The game would become a battle of the bullpens after the starters went five and six innings respectively, giving either side a chance to take home the W.

 

Redbirds righties Tyler Waldron and Marcus Hatley (1-1, 2.35) would toss three combined scoreless inning in relief of Petrick with Hatley recording four strikeouts in his two frames.

 

Taking over for Thornburg in the sixth, left-hander Michael Kirkman made his Sky Sox debut, tossing a scoreless frame with three consecutive groundouts.

 

Chris Leroux (1-3, 3.94) took over in the seventh, also pitching a scoreless frame before going out for a second inning in the bottom of the eighth. With runners on second and third after a walk and errant throw on Dean Anna's sacrifice bunt opened, Leroux faced an uphill battle with Ed Easley at the dish in the next at-bat.

 

Easley would please the home crowd with an RBI single to centerfield, scoring Ty Kelly from third easily before Anna was cut down at the plate on a Logan Schafer throw to Ashley. Leroux would work out of further trouble, however, Kelly's run would be the final scored in the ballgame as the Redbirds would close out Colorado Springs 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth to secure a 2-1 series-ending win.

 

The Sky Sox will look to get back on track on Friday night as they travel to Iowa to take on the Cubs in the first of a four-game set. Drew Gagnon (1-2, 5.40) will take the hill against fellow right-hander Donn Roach (3-0, 2.59) with first pitch set for 6:08 PM MDT (7:08 Central) at Principal Park.

Tyler Thornburg will soon realize this move to the rotation in AAA was for the best as he almost certainly will be in the big league rotation by mid-season given future trades and/or futility in Milwaukee. The Sky Sox are a league-worst 9-18 and trail the league's best team (Oklahoma City - Dodgers) by 11 games on May 8th, sound familiar, Brewer fans? Only no wild card in AAA.

Shuckers squander Wagner's seven shutout innings

PEARL, MS - In a complete opposite to Wednesday night's game, the Biloxi Shuckers fell to the Mississippi Braves and were shutout for just the third time, 4-0, Thursday night at Trustmark Park, ending the club's three-game winning streak. Biloxi suffered the first loss to their inter-state rival, stranding 11 runners on base and finishing 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. The Shuckers fall into a first place tie, atop the Southern League South Division with Mobile.

 

Tyler Wagner picked up where he left off during his last start on May 2, tossing seven scoreless innings and tying a season high with seven strikeouts. Thursday was the Las Vegas native's fourth quality start, and second consecutive no decision after allowing one run through seven innings against the Mobile BayBears. Wagner lowered his ERA to 1.50 and has surrendered just one run over his last two starts and 14 innings of work. The 24-year-old remains a perfect 4-0 on the year.

 

Biloxi (17-10) had plenty of chances off of Braves' starter Tyrell Jenkins, with the pivotal moment of the game in the home-half of the fifth when the Shuckers had the bases loaded and nobody out.

 

Kyle Wren (1x4) led off the frame with a single and advanced to second when Yadiel Rivera (1x4) was hit by a pitch. Orlando Arcia (0x3, BB) walked to load the bases for Nick Ramirez (3x4). The Shuckers' first baseman flew out to left, but the ball could not carry far enough for Wren to tag. Michael Reed (1x4) grounded into a 1-2-3 double play to end the threat. Jenkins, whom the Braves acquired along with Shelby Miller in the Jason Heyward trade last November, settled for a no decision also, despite six shutout innings.

 

Mississippi (12-13) got on the board in the eighth against reliever Jaye Chapman (IP, unearned run, 2 H). The inning started with a leadoff double by Emerson Landoni, placing a runner in scoring position with no outs. Mallex Smith put down a bunt with Chapman attempting a barehanded throw to first that sailed wide of the mark and allowed Landoni to score.

 

The Braves tacked on three more runs in the ninth off of Martin Viramontes (IP, 3 R - 2 ER - 3 H) and provided a 4-0 cushion.

 

Reliever Jorge Reyes (3-1, 0.95) tossed two scoreless behind Jenkins and got the win.

 

Arcia was 0-for-3 with a walk, ending his seven-game hitting streak. Ramirez collected his second three-hit performance going 3-for-4 (all singles) on Thursday night.

 

Biloxi will try to jump back ahead in the five-game set when it will send out RHP Jacob Barnes (0-3, 3.68) in the middle game of the series, against Mississippi's RHP Jake Brigham (2-2, 5.48). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM on Friday night, with coverage beginning at 6:45 on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Space Explorers blast off against Tampa Yankees, win 8-4

The Brevard County Space Explorers used a seven-run third inning to win the first game of a three-game series against the Tampa Yankees. Home runs by Jose Pena and Rafael Neda highlighted the decisive frame.

 

The Manatees have changed their name temporarily to the Space Explorers, as part of a promotional three-game series in conjunction with Kennedy Space Center. If this first game is any indication, the team may want to think about keeping the name a bit longer.

 

“Great way to start the homestand,” said Space Explorers manager Joe Ayrault. “Coming back here, wearing the Space Explorers uniforms and the moon hats and that seven run third inning with a couple home runs in there, definitely a good night.”

 

Brevard County sent a season-high 11 men to the plate in that seven run third, against Tampa starter Chaz Hebert. Pena’s home run to left field, his first of the season. “We saw him a little bit in spring training,” said Ayrault of Pena. “I know he’s got a good bat and he started the inning and then we built it up, loaded the bases and drove a bunch of guys in.”

 

Angel Ortega singled and went to second when Omar Garcia laid down a bunt single. Chris McFarland followed with a walk, loading the bases. Taylor Brennan laced a two-run single to center, making it 3-0. Mark Payton had trouble with the ball in center and that moved the runners to second and third. Clint Coulter kept the hit parade going, with an RBI single, making it 4-0.

 

Hebert finally got Victor Roache on strikes and did the same with Garrett Cooper. Those were the first two outs of the inning. That brought Neda to the plate and he got into a pitch from Hebert, sending it over the wall in left, giving Brevard County a 7-0 cushion. Ericson Leonora did make an attempt to bring the ball back, but it went over his glove.

 

That spelled the end of the night for Hebert (2-2), who allowed seven runs on six hits in 2.2 innings. He walked three and struck out two. Matt Wotherspoon took over and he settled things down, pitching the next 2.1 innings, allowing one hit.

 

Space Explorers starter Hiram Burgos (2-3) allowed an RBI single to Tyler Wade in the top of the third and worked in and out of trouble in the fourth inning. He ended up giving Ayrault six solid innings of work.

 

“He really showed me something in the fourth,” Ayrault said. “Leadoff walk and a couple hits. He gave up a run and then he really locked in. He finished the fourth and then came out in the fifth and sixth and put up zeros. That’s a veteran pitcher to deal with a little adversity and overcome it. He did a great job there.”

 

Brevard County (13-14) loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and Neda came through again, with an RBI sacrifice fly to make it 8-2. Tampa answered back in the top of the eighth, when Miguel Andujar homered against Space Explorers reliever Stephen Peterson, cutting the lead in half at 8-4.

 

Peterson pitched the final three innings, with his only blemish being the Andujar home run. He gave up three hits and struck out three, to earn his first save of the season.

 

The series continues Friday night at Space Coast Stadium. Wei-Chung Wang (1-1, 6.04 ERA) will pitch for Brevard County. Tampa (15-13) will counter with Jonathan Holder.
