Brevard County 6, Clearwater 4

 

A big two out double over the head of the Threshers' center fielder into the teeth of the wind, by Garrett Cooper, scored the go ahead run in the 8th inning. Clint Coulter singled in two runs in the ninth with two outs that was the difference in the end. That backed up another strong outing from Trevor Seidenberger, who pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and recorded the win. Casey Medlen with another shaky outing in the 9th but survived this time.

Clearwater, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees (11-13) scored four runs in the final three innings during a 6-4 victory over the Clearwater Threshers (12-13) on Monday night at Bright House Field.

 

Brevard County opened the scoring in the top of the second. Garrett Cooper drew a leadoff walk. After back-to-back outs, Cooper stole second. Angel Ortega singled up the middle to open the scoring.

 

The Threshers tied the score in the bottom half of the frame. Zach Green hit a solo home run against Manatees starter Brandon Woodruff. Woodruff did not factor into the decision. He allowed three runs on five hits and three walks over 5.2 innings. He fanned four.

 

The 'Tees took the lead in the third. With one out, Chris McFarland reached on a bunt single. Taylor Brennan then grounded out to the first, but advanced McFarland up to second. McFarland stole third before Clint Coulter drew a walk to put men on the corners with two outs. Victor Roache stepped up and drilled an RBI double to left field to plate McFarland.

 

The 2-1 score would hold until the fifth. Woodruff plunked the leadoff man, Devin Lohman. Chase Harris then sacrificed Lohman up to second. Lohman would score on an RBI single to center by Drew Stankiewicz that tied the game at two.

 

The Threshers took the lead in the very next inning on a sacrifice fly by Willians Astudillo.

 

The Manatees plated a run in the seventh to tie the game. Steven Halcomb drew a walk with nobody out. Ortega then singled to left. Omar Garcia sacrificed the runners to second and third. The Threshers summoned Edubray Ramos (1-2, 2.93 ERA) from the bullpen to face McFarland. He hit a deep drive to center that was tracked down by Harris. The first baseman, Astudillo, cut the ball off, but threw the ball away. Ortega tried to score as well, but the catcher, Andrew Knapp, picked the ball up at the backstop and threw to a covering Astudillo at the plate in time to get Ortega.

 

The tie would not last long, however. In the top of the eighth, Brennan worked a leadoff walk. Three batters later, Brennan stole second with two outs. Cooper crushed a double to center to score Brennan and give the Manatees a 4-3 lead.

 

Brevard County added to the lead in the ninth against Ulises Joaquin. With two outs, Garcia singled up the middle. After a McFarland single, Brennan walked to load the bases. Coulter pulled a single to left to score Garcia and McFarland. The 'Tees led, 6-3.

 

Casey Medlen was summoned from the bullpen for the bottom half of the ninth. Green singled and Lohman doubled to start things off. Harris then walked to load the bases. Stankiewicz hit a sacrifice fly to right and trim the Brevard County lead to two. Medlen retired Andrew Pullin and Knapp to end the game. It was Medlen's fourth save of the year.

 

Trevor Seidenberger (2-0, 0.00 ERA) was credited with the win in relief. He tossed 2.1 shutout innings and allowed just one hit. Seidenberger has not allowed a run in his first 10.1 innings of work this season.

 

Ramos was tagged with the loss. He allowed the go-ahead run on Cooper's eighth inning double.

 

The Manatees and Threshers will play game two of the series tomorrow night at Bright House Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Javi Salas (1-2, 2.16 ERA) will start for Brevard County. Colin Kleven (2-1, 5.09 ERA) will toe the rubber for Clearwater.

Kernels beat Wisconsin 9-3 to open series

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Cedar Rapids Kernels broke a 3-3 tie with three runs in the top of the fifth inning and went on to a 9-3 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Monday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The loss was the fourth straight for the Timber Rattlers.

 

Cedar Rapids (14-11) scored early to take a 3-0 lead. Trey Vavra singled with two outs to drive in a runner from third with two outs in the first inning. The Kernels added two more runs in the top of the third. Max Murphy singled in a pair with a two-out single.

 

The Rattlers (8-17) scratched back to tie the game with a single run in the third and two more in the fourth. Monte Harrison started the third with a walk and stole second, but he was at third base with two outs. Carlo Leal, who had two hits in the game, drove in Harrison with a double to right-center to give Wisconsin their first run.

 

In the fourth, Dustin DeMuth hit a leadoff double. Mitch Meyer extended his hitting streak to seven games with an RBI triple to make the score 3-2. Meyer scored the tying run on a wild pitch.

 

But, the Kernels went back in front with three runs in the top of the fifth. Zack Larson drew a one out walk against starting pitcher Luis Ortega, who left after that batter.

 

Larson stole second base and went to third base on a wild pitch with reliever Mark Williams on the mound. Williams walked Vavra and threw another wild pitch to allow Larson to score the go-ahead run. A two-out triple by Jorge Fernandez drove in Vavra for a 5-3 lead.

 

Fernandez broke for the plate on a pitch that got away from catcher Greg McCall. Williams covered the plate in time, but dropped the throw from McCall and was charged with an error as Fernandez scored to make it 6-3.

 

The Rattlers would get runners on in their half of the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, but could not score. Cedar Rapids starting pitcher Jared Wilson struck out seven over his six innings to move his record to 3-0. Zach Tillery worked the final three innings to earn his first save of the season.

 

Cedar Rapids added a run in the eighth on double by English off Milton Gomez. The Kernels tacked on two more runs in the ninth against Gomez and an RBI double by Murphy and an RBI single by TJ White.

 

The trio of Timber Rattlers pitchers walked ten, threw four wild pitches, and gave up nine hits in the game. Wisconsin hitters struck out eleven times.

 

Game two of the series is Tuesday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Orlando Torrez (0-1, 3.95) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Cedar Rapids sends Mat Batts (2-1, 2.19) to the hill. Game time is 6:35pm.

Usually I can separate myself from the action and be fairly objective, but this game pissed me off. When they came back and tied the contest I started pulling very hard that they'd keep pushing through and get that first "real" come from behind win of the season. I think that's one of those mental hurdles that this young team needs to get over.

 

Elvis Rubio's hitting streak came to end but Carlos Leal and Mitch Meyer extended theirs. Greg McCall has also been hot of late hitting .342 over his last 10, though he doesn't have an XBH hit on the season. He's been getting pitched away quite a bit and lining singles to the left side of the field, but it's still odd he hasn't found a gap yet.

 

I'm not sure what the deal was but Scooter Gennett played defense like he did that full season with the T-Rats, committing 3 errors in 4 games.

HUNTSVILLE, AL - The Shuckers jumped back into first place in the South Division after a dramatic come-from-behind, 4-3 victory over the Mobile BayBears on Monday afternoon at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville. It was the second straight one-run win and Biloxi becomes the first Southern League team to 16 wins this season. The Shuckers dropped three of five in the set, but won back-to-back one-run contests, upping the record to 5-2 in one-run affairs.

 

The Shuckers rallied from down 2-0 and then 3-2 in the eighth inning to pull ahead for good. Kyle Wren (1x4, R, SB) singled to lead off the eighth and advanced to second on a gorgeous sacrifice bunt by Yadiel Rivera (2x3, R, SB). The speedster swiped third to put the tying run 90-feet away, and Orlando Arcia (2x4, RBI, R, 2B, SB) ripped a double to bring in the tying run.

 

Nick Ramirez (0x3, R, BB) struck out and then Michael Reed (1x2, RBI, 2 BB, SB) walked to load the bases for Nathan Orf (2x3, 2 RBI, 2B, BB). Orf flared a broken-bat single to right to bring in Arcia and give Biloxi a one-run lead at 4-3.

 

The pressure mounted in the ninth with Wifrin Obispo (SV, 5) seeking his fifth save in five chances.

 

A leadoff single to Mitch Haniger was followed by two wild pitches to put the tying run on third with nobody out. Obispo settled down, getting Tom Belza to pop out to catcher Parker Berberet - who had come on for an injured Adam Weisenburger (0x3) Obispo then struck out Brandon Drury on three pitches. Reed made the defensive play of the day with a diving catch in right-centerfield to rob Sean Jamieson of a game-tying hit, ending the game.

 

Mobile (15-9) broke Jorge Lopez's (5 IP, 2 R, 7 H, BB, 6 SO) scoreless-inning streak at 12.1 before it recorded an out; Belza doubled to start the game and Drury followed with a RBI single.

 

The Brewers' 15th-ranked prospect settled down after the opening frame, retiring ten in-a-row from the second to the fifth inning before a two-out double by Jamieson ended the streak. Rudy Flores gave the BayBears a two-run cushion with an RBI single to bring home Jamieson.

 

Biloxi (16-9) tied the game off of reliever R.J. Hively in the sixth. Back-to-back one-out singles by Rivera and Arcia put two on for Ramirez, who grounded into a fielder's choice from first base to second to put runners on the corners. Reed and Orf singled to bring in both runners, with Reed being thrown out trying to score on Orf's base hit to end the Shuckers' inning.

 

The BayBears responded with a run in the seventh when Drury tripled with two outs on a misplayed ball by Tyrone Taylor (0x3) in left-centerfield and Jamieson brought him in on an error by Arcia, giving Mobile a 3-2 advantage.

 

The combination of Martin Viramontes (1.2 IP, R - 0 ER - 2 H, SO), Mike Strong (0.1 IP), Jaye Chapman (W, 2-1, IP, BB, 2 SO) and Obispo locked down the BayBears' offense and kept the game alive for Biloxi's offense.

 

The Shuckers swiped a season-high four bags during Monday's contest, eclipsing the mark set on April 26 against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. Arcia recorded his 11th multi-hit game with a 2-for-4 day at the plate and Orf picked up two hits for the second-straight day going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, including the game-winner.

 

The win concluded a stretch of 21 games in 20 days, as Biloxi will take Tuesday off before hosting the Mississippi Braves for a five-game series in Pearl, Miss. Shuckers fans wearing club apparel will receive free admission to each of the five games at Trustmark Park. The Shuckers will send out RHP Brooks Hall (3-0, 0.96), while the Braves will have RHP Jason Hursh (0-1, 8.50) on the bump. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM, with coverage beginning at 6:45 on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Redbirds Edge Sky Sox Late In 5-4 Loss

Starters' Struggles Turn To Battle of Bullpens in Tight Contest

The Sky Sox and Memphis Redbirds played a tough, seesaw battle of a ballgame in Colorado Springs' eventual 5-4 loss in front of 1,900 fans at AutoZone Park on Monday night.

 

Neither starter was particularly sharp on Monday night, turning in relatively brief and similar outings. With Memphis' originally scheduled starter Tyler Lyons getting the call to St. Louis to pitch for the big club on Tuesday, Nick Greenwood would take the mound on short notice. In 3.2 innings of work in the spot start the lefty allowed four runs on eight hits while striking out one.

 

Sox starter Nick Additon would struggle early in his four inning start, allowing three runs in the first inning of work to give Colorado Springs an early hole to climb out of. The former Redbird would settle down over his next few innings, giving up one more run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded. The run would knot the ballgame at four after four innings of play. In all, Additon would allow four runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out four over four innings.

 

The game would ultimately come down to a battle of the bullpens as both starters would be gone by the fifth inning.

 

The Memphis bullpen twirled 5.1 innings of scoreless baseball to keep the Redbirds in the ballgame despite giving up seven total hits in that time. A combination of Kurt Heyer (1-1, 2.70), Keith Butler, Dean Kiekhefer and Marcus Hatley were able to limit the damage and keep the game even until their offense broke through in the home seventh.

 

Already with two innings and three strikeouts under his belt, left-hander Jed Bradley (0-2, 10.03) had also done a nice job keeping his team in the ballgame until a pesky leadoff single caused him trouble in the seventh. Memphis catcher Travis Tartamella's base knock eventually gave the Redbirds their latest lead of the ballgame as David Goforth would give up a run-scoring Stephen Piscotty double immediately after coming on for Bradley with one out in the inning.

 

The Sky Sox would not be able to fight back this time as they would be kept off the board for the next two frames by the Memphis bullpen, falling by just one run after a tightly-contested contest which saw the offense pound out a whopping fifteen base-hits. Robinzon Diaz, Ben Guez, Matt Long and Shane Peterson each collected three hits to lead the way.

 

Tyler Cravy (1-3, 4.91) will look to play stopper to the Sox current two-game slide as he takes the mound for the Sky Sox against Redbirds left-hander Tim Cooney (2-1, 3.63) on Tuesday evening in game two of the four-game series in Memphis.
