Brewers OF Victor Roache, Class A Advanced Brevard County: 3-for-4, HR, 3B, 3 RBI, R -- The Brewers have asked Roache to go the other way more often this season, and the 2012 first-rounder is doing just that in a remarkable way. The 23-year-old has six homers in 22 games, and all of them have gone out to the opposite field. The right-handed hitter is abusing right field while batting .318 with a .996 OPS after posting a lackluster .697 OPS with the Manatees in 2014.

Quad Cities beats Rattlers 10-1 for sweep at Wisconsin

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Quad Cities River Bandits scored four runs in the top of the first inning and went on to a 10-1 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Sunday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field.

 

For the second game in a row, Quad Cities (18-6) jumped out to an early lead. The River Bandits sent nine men to the plate and scored four runs against Wisconsin starter Kodi Medeiros in the first inning. They loaded the bases with no outs on a double, a walk, and an error. Medeiros walked Mott Hyde on four pitches to force in the first run of the game. Nick Tanielu was next and he singled to drive in two more runs. Alfredo Gonzalez knocked in the final run of the inning by grounding into a force play at second.

 

Scooter Gennett started the Timber Rattlers half of the first inning with a double and a grounder to the right side of the infield by Gregory Munoz moved Gennett to third base. But, that was where he was left stranded.

 

Quad Cities starting pitcher Joe Musgrove scattered five hits over five scoreless innings to earn his fourth win of the season.

 

The River Bandits added to their lead in the fifth inning when they loaded the bases with no outs against Medeiros again. Reliever Josh Uhen took over for Medeiros and struck out the first two batters he faced, but Kristian Trompiz drove a two-out single up the middle that scored two runs.

 

The score moved to 8-0 in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI double by Hyde and an RBI grounder by Gonzalez.

 

Wisconsin (8-16) got their lone run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Carlos Leal doubled with two outs. Then, Tucker Neuhaus singled up the middle to drive in Leal.

 

Leal, Gennett, and Mitch Meyer each had two hits in the game for Wisconsin. Meyer extended his current hitting streak to six games. Elvis Rubio had a single in the second inning to move his current hitting streak to seven games, the longest streak by a Timber Rattlers player this season.

 

Bb]But, Wisconsin went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position on Sunday and stranded eight runners.[/b]

 

Quad Cities scored their final runs of the game with two outs in the top of the ninth against David Burkhalter. Trompiz tripled with two away and none on base. Bobby Boyd followed with a triple to drive in Trompiz. Jamie Ritchie knocked in Boyd when he made it three triples in a row.

 

The Rattlers dropped their third straight game. Quad Cities, owners of the best record in the Midwest League, have won five straight.

 

The Timber Rattlers begin a three-game series with the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Monday night. Luis Ortega (0-2, 4.32) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Jared Wilson (2-0, 1.65) is set to start for the Kernels. Game time is 6:35pm.

 

Monday is also the final scheduled game of Milwaukee Brewers second baseman Scooter Gennett's rehab assignment with the Timber Rattlers. Gennett is 3-for-7 in his first three games with the Rattlers on this assignment.

Carlos Leal just keeps on keepin' on, with another nice game. This team is kind of a broken record here at this point with the same issues repeating in the last 3 games; poor pitching, poor fielding, and poor situational hitting. In truth, with the exception of that nice streak last week this 3 game stretch is representative of the way they played all April.

 

Time to start ascending, May and June has been when our better young prospects have taken off in the past.

Two walks and two wild pitches in the 10th ended this game in the bottom of the 10th. Tortugas take 4 of 5 in the series. Wei-Chung Wang was much better today with 6 IP, 1 R, 6 H, 1 BB, 5 K. Tristan Archer threw 3 scoreless innings. Taylor Brennan was 3-4 with a walk but struck out with the lead runner on 2nd and 2 out in the top of the 10th.

Daytona Beach, Fla. - A weekend series that was defined by the Daytona Tortugas (16-8) finding ways to win in tough spots ended in appropriate fashion on Sunday night as the Tortugas scored a walk-off 2-1 victory over the Brevard County Manatees (10-13) in 10 innings on a wild pitch.

 

Both teams would get runners on in the opening innings but neither team produced a genuine threat until Daytona came to the plate in the bottom of the third inning. The Tortugas two-out rally would begin with a double to center by Alex Blandino. He would be brought home shortly after that on a Sebastian Elizalde double to right. Elizalde would be stranded by Wei-Chung Wang when he got Chad Wallach to ground out to first.

 

The Manatees would erase the deficit quickly in the following inning. The frame would start on a Taylor Brennan single to right, who then moved up to second when Clint Coulter followed with a base hit of his own. Following a strikeout of Victor Roache, the 'Tees would then get their lone run of the game when Garrett Cooper singled to left and Brennan was able to lunge around Joe Hudson's tag at the plate. The inning would come to a close after that when Paul Eshleman grounded into an around the horn double play.

 

The next true scoring threat would come in the bottom of the seventh inning with Manatee reliever Tristan Archer just entered the game. It would start with a base hit to left by Carlton Daal. After Nick Benedetto struck out trying to bunt his way on base, Archer appeared to have Daal picked off but he would be called for a balk, awarding Daal second base. Phillip Ervin then hit a deep drive to the gap in right center that Omar Garcia ran down, leading Daal to tag up for third. It appeared he wanted to try to score on the play but 'Tugas manager Eli Marrero signaled for Daal to slam on the brakes when he saw the relay throw and Daal just made it back to third base around Brennan's tag. The bullet would be dodged when Archer got Blandino to ground out to third to end the inning.

 

Archer would allow baserunners in the eighth and ninth innings but neither would advance past first base. Daytona relievers Nolan Becker and Jimmy Moran were equal to the task, which would bring the game to extra innings.

 

Brevard County looked poised to go ahead in the top of the 10th when Cameron Garfield singled to left to lead off and then Angel Ortega bunted his way on, just beating Hudson's throw to first. After Garcia struck out trying to bunt, Moran would give way for Evan Mitchell (2-0, 4.82 ERA). He would strike out Chris McFarland and Brennan to keep the game tied and give Daytona a chance to win it.

 

The 'Tugas would get an ideal start to the inning when Blandino drew a leadoff walk against new Manatee reliever Stephen Peterson (2-1, 2.53 ERA). He would be forced out at second on a grounder by Elizalde. Wallach would move Elizalde over when he grounded out to third, which brought Taylor Sparks to the plate. While he was at the plate, Garfield would block a pitch up the third base line and Elizalde took the gamble of going for third. Garfield's throw was in time, but Brennan could not complete the tag and the Tortugas were now 90 feet away from a win. Peterson would walk Sparks, which gave Hudson the opportunity to decide it. However, it wound up being out of his hands as Peterson's pitch went to the backstop, Elizalde sprinted home and Daytona had earned a series win.

 

Wang had a solid start against a strong Daytona lineup for the second time this season, giving up one run on six hits in six innings, walking one and striking out five in a no-decision. Daytona starter Sal Romano gave up one run in six innings of work as well, surrendering five hits while walking three and striking out five.

 

Mitchell would be rewarded for his work in escaping the top of the 10th with his second win of the season.

 

The Manatees now travel to Clearwater, where they'll begin a three-game series with the Threshers on Monday at 7 P.M. at Bright House Field. RHP Brandon Woodruff (0-1, 6.89 ERA) gets the start for Brevard County against RHP Mark Leiter (1-0, 1.80 ERA).

Storm Chasers Stifle Sky Sox Bats In 4-2 Loss

Omaha's Brooks Out-duels Gagnon to Earn Series-Split

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - The Omaha Storm Chasers flipped the script on the Sky Sox before a crowd of 4,848 in Sunday afternoon's 4-2 loss at Security Service Field.

 

Colorado Springs starter Drew Gagnon (1-2, 5.40) cruised through his first five innings of work, allowing just one run on three hits and one walk over that span. The right-hander would make one real mistake in the sixth inning that wound up being the difference in the ballgame. With one out and a runner on second in the top of the sixth, Gagnon left a ball up to Whit Merrifield that the Omaha third baseman would not miss, taking the offering over the left field wall for a two-run shot that gave his squad a 3-0 lead at the time.

 

Gagnon would get out of the sixth without any more damage being done, finishing his solid outing having allowed three runs over six innings on five hits and two walks while striking out one. Gagnon was especially impressive in his groundout to flyout ratio, getting 10 of his 14 recorded outs on the ground on his way to a quality start.

 

Storm Chasers righty Aaron Brooks (2-2, 3.62) turned in a stellar start for his team, tossing seven innings of one-run ball on just four hits allowed while striking out a whopping eight Sky Sox batters.

 

Brooks' lone blemish came in the sixth inning after Matt Long's two-out triple to deep centerfield gave way to a Pete Orr RBI single in the very next at bat.

 

Making his way back from injury during a current minor league rehab assignment, former Brewers closer Jim Henderson made his Sky Sox debut when taking the mound in the seventh. Henderson would go two innings in relief of Gagnon, allowing one run on three hits.

 

The Sky Sox would threaten Omaha's 4-1 lead in the home eighth as Bryan Petersen and Nevin Ashley would string together consecutive singles off of Storm Chasers righty Mike Mariot. The reliever would strike out the next two Sox batters before walking Orr to load the bases for Luis Sardinas with two out in the frame. Sardinas could not come through with the big hit however, striking out on a ball in the dirt to end the scoring threat.

 

Brandon Kintzler came on in the top of the ninth, recording a scoreless inning with one strikeout to maintain the 4-1 score heading into the games final frame.

 

Continuing his hot-streak at the plate, Matt Clark sent a booming line drive off of the right field wall to leadoff the bottom of the ninth, giving the Colorado Springs faithful the hope for a comeback win. Shane Peterson would follow with an RBI groundout off of Mariot, cutting the Omaha lead to 4-2 with just one out.

 

Omaha would not let the game get away however, replacing Mariot with right-hander Louis Coleman to get the final two outs and secure a 4-2 win in the series finale.

 

With the loss, the Sky Sox split the four-game series with the defending back-to-back PCL champs and fall to 8-15 on the season.

 

The Sox will hit the road for an eight-game road trip starting in Memphis on Monday evening. Lefty Nick Additon (1-1, 3.94) gets the call in the series opener against Redbirds starter Tyler Lyons (2-1, 2.91) in a southpaw showdown at AutoZone Park. First pitch is slated for 6:05 PM MDT (7:05 Central).

HUNTSVILLE, AL - Nick Ramirez (3x4, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 3 R) blasted the Biloxi Shuckers to victory with the first ever multi-home run performance in team history on Sunday afternoon - a 5-4 victory over the Mobile BayBears at Joe Davis Stadium. The loss snapped a three-game slide for the Shuckers and moved them back within ½ a game of the first-place BayBears with one game left between the two clubs before an off day on Tuesday.

 

For the first time this series, the Shuckers got on the board first in the second inning off of Ramirez's first of two home runs on the afternoon. After a fly out by Michael Reed (0x2), Nathan Orf (2x2, R, BB, SB) walked, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout by Tyrone Taylor (0x1, RBI, BB), and scored on a wild pitch to Parker Berberet (0x2, BB).

 

Mobile (15-8) put up two runs in the fourth when Mitch Haniger doubled to break up Hobbs Johnson's (5 IP, 3 R, 3 H, BB, SO) no-hit bid. Sean Jamieson followed with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch to set up two runners in scoring position with one out. Brandon Drury brought home Haniger on a fielder's choice and Socrates Brito hit a sacrifice fly to left to bring in Jamison and tie the game at two.

 

Biloxi (15-9) jumped right back on top with a two-spot of its own in the bottom-half of the fourth when Ramirez sent out his second long ball of the game, a two run shot, to give the Shuckers a 4-2 advantage. The two-homer game for Ramirez was his first since June 20, 2014 as a Huntsville Star, at Pensacola and the fourth of his career. He sits tied with Chattanooga's Adam Brett Walker for the league lead in home runs with six.

 

The BayBears would manufacture a run in the fifth and Brito launched his first round tripper of the season in the sixth off of reliever Austin Ross (W, 1-0, 2 IP, R, 2 H, SO) to even up the tally at four going into the bottom of the sixth. The homer stopped a string off 11 innings scoreless from the former LSU Tiger.

 

The Shuckers responded in their half of the sixth when Ramirez contributed his third hit of the game, a one-out single, advanced to second when Reed was hit by a pitch, made it to third on a walk dealt to Orf. Ramirez scored on a Taylor sacrifice fly to give Biloxi a one-run lead.

 

Damien Magnifico (SV, 1) worked a perfect eighth and ninth, and struck out Mark Thomas on three pitches to end the game. The save was the first for Magnifico. Ross was straddled with a blow save, but got the win.

 

Mobile starter Braden Shipley entered with a 0.96 ERA, but left with his first loss. The 15th overall pick in 2013 allowed five runs on six hits in six innings on the mound. The victory stopped Mobile's Southern League-best eight-game winning streak.

 

The Shuckers will look to hop back into first place in the series finale on Monday afternoon with RHP Jorge Lopez (2-2, 3.50) taking on RHP Yoan Lopez (1-2, 2.70). First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 PM, with coverage beginning at 12:55 on 1240-AM WGCM, 1580-AM WPMO and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network.
