Brevard County wins 4-2 over Lakeland to Clinch Series Win

Lakeland, Fla. – Garrett Cooper’s two-run single in the top of the 13th inning led the Brevard County Manatees (9-9) to a 4-2 win over the Lakeland Flying Tigers (7-12) on Monday Night at Joker Marchant Stadium.

 

With the score tied at two, Clint Coulter led off the top of the 13th with a double to left field against Montreal Robertson (1-3, 6.55 ERA). The next batter, Victor Roache, reached on a fielding error by the CF Jiwan James to put runners on second and third with nobody out. Cooper then delivered with a clutch, two-RBI single to left to give the Manatees a two-run cushion.

 

Tristian Archer was summoned from the Brevard County bullpen to try to close the game out. He struck out Grayson Greiner and retired Ben Verlander on a pop out to start the inning. Raph Rhymes and Francisco Martinez then singled consecutively. With runners on first and second, James flied out to left field to end the ballgame. Archer recorded his first save of the season.

 

Lakeland forced extra innings by plating a run in the bottom of the ninth against Kaleb Earls. Both Martinez and James singled with one out to put runners on first and second. Javier Betancourt singled to left to score Martinez and tie the game. Earls retired the next two batters and forced extras.

 

The Flying Tigers originally opened the scoring on a two-out RBI double by Curt Powell in the bottom of the third.

 

The Manatees responded immediately with a run in the fourth. With one out, Taylor Brennan reached second on a throwing error by Powell. After Coulter flied out, Roache smacked an RBI single to left field to tie the game.

 

Brevard County took the lead in the next frame. Cooper singled to center to start the fifth inning. Paul Eshleman moved Cooper to second on a grounder. After Angel Ortega walked, Steven Halcomb slapped a single into right field. Cooper scored from second and the Manatees led, 2-1.

 

Tyler Spurlin (1-0, 1.00 ERA) was credited with the win. He pitched three no-hit, scoreless innings from the 10th to the 12th. The Flying Tigers had just one base runner against Spurlin, a one-out walk in the 10th.

 

Brevard County starter Brandon Woodruff did not factor into the decision. He allowed just one run on six hits over five innings. The righty walked three and struck out one batter.

 

Steven Peterson tossed 2.1 shutout relief innings behind Woodruff. Peterson surrendered a hit and two walks. He fanned one batter. Earls gave up just the one run over 1.2 innings, despite four hits allowed.

 

Ryan Longstreth, the Lakeland starter, lasted six innings and allowed two runs – one earned. He gave up six hits and walked one. Longstreth struck out five men.

 

The two teams will wrap up the three-game series tomorrow morning at 10:30 AM (9:30 Central). Javi Salas (1-2, 1.35 ERA) will get the start for the Manatees. The Flying Tigers will send Tommy Collier (2-0, 1.00 ERA) to the hill.

PENSACOLA, FLA. - Tyler Wagner did it all for the Shuckers on Monday night at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium, blasting a go-ahead two-run homer in the fourth and collecting his league-best fourth win in an 8-2 victory over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. The league-leading 12th win and a Mobile rainout on Monday gives Biloxi a 1.5 game edge in the South Division. The Shuckers have won six of seven.

 

Wagner (W, 4-0) labored through the third inning after getting two quick outs to Daniel Wright and Ryan Wright. Back-to-back walks to Jesse Winker and Sean Buckley put a runner in scoring position for Kyle Waldrop, who singled in Winker from second. Seth Mejias-Brean doubled in Buckley from second to put the Shuckers in a 2-0 hole.

 

The ninth-ranked prospect settled down afterwards, retiring six of the final seven batters he faced after the third. On the night, the righty tossed five innings of three-hit ball with the two runs, four walks and five strikeouts. It was Wagner's second win over Pensacola and made him only the third pitcher in minor league baseball to start 4-0, joining New Britain's (COL) Shane Carle and Visalia's (ARI) Zack Godley.

 

Biloxi (12-6) answered with a vengeance in the top of the fourth, plating four runs.

 

Michael Reed (3x5, RBI, R) singled with one out and Nathan Orf (1x3, RBI, R, 2B, 2 BB) doubled him home to make it a one-run game. The third baseman advanced to third on a wild pitch to Tyrone Taylor (1x4, RBI, BB), who grounded out to short to score Orf and tie the game.

 

A walk to Adam Weisenburger (2x3, 2 R, BB) set the stage for Wagner, who helped himself out with a two-run homer that caromed off the glove of the right fielder Winker and over the fence for the pitcher's first professional home run. Wagner's long ball was the second of the year for a Biloxi pitcher as the first came off of the bat of Brooks Hall on Tuesday.

 

Yadiel Rivera (2x4, RBI, R) gave the Shuckers some insurance in the ninth by squeezing in Weisenburger from third to give Biloxi a 5-2 lead. Nick Ramirez (2x5, 2 RBI) opened the game up with a two-run single and Reed drove in another run to give Biloxi a sizeable 8-2 cushion.

 

Rivera's performance extended his on-base streak to a Southern League-best 17 games after Tennessee Smokies' first baseman Dan Vogelbach failed to reach base against the Chattanooga Lookouts.

 

Austin Ross (2 IP, 2 H, 4 SO), Tanner Poppe (IP, H, 2 SO) and Martin Viramontes (IP, H, SO) locked down the Blue Wahoos in the final four frames to keep the Shuckers' record perfect in nine-inning games at 9-0.

 

The 12 combined strikeouts for the four pitchers are the most punch outs by Biloxi's staff in a game during the 2015 season.

 

Pensacola (5-12) starter Daniel Wright (L, 0-3) allowed four runs through five innings and suffered the loss. Ramirez, Weisenburger and Rivera had multi-hit affairs.

 

Biloxi will try to earn its second straight series with a win Tuesday night. The Shuckers will send out LHP Hobbs Johnson (1-0, 0.79) while the Blue Wahoos will counter with RHP Josh Smith (1-0, 6.10). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM and can be heard starting at 6:20 with the Beau Rivage Biloxi Shuckers Pregame Show on 1240-AM WGCM and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Sky Sox Romp Cubs 7-0 In Tidy 7-Inning Contest

Backed by Tenacious Offense, Thornburg and Leroux Shine In Win Over Iowa

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - With the Cubs' Triple-A affiliate in town, it only seemed right to be prepared to play two at Security Service Field on Monday evening after Sunday afternoon's washout. Unfortunately things would not shake out in favor of the great Mr. Cub's signature catch phrase as game two of the twin bill would be cancelled due to inclement weather after the Sky Sox crisp 7-0 win over Iowa in seven innings before a crowd of 1,531.

 

Making his first start for the Sox after being sent down by Milwaukee, Tyler Thornburg tossed 3.2 scoreless innings, allowing two singles and a walk while striking out four. The right-hander was removed with two outs in the fourth after a Chris Valaika line drive single to left field, leaving two runners on for righty-reliever Chris Leroux (1-2, 4.15). A strictly enforced pitch-limit would take Thornburg from the ballgame early after making an electrifying first impression on the Colorado Springs faithful. His steady mix of 93-94 MPH fastballs and devastating curveballs would keep Iowa's lineup off-balance for the first half of the ballgame.

 

Veteran Japanese import Tsuyoshi Wada (0-2, 5.40) would not fare nearly as well for the Cubs as the Sky Sox offense would put a few crooked numbers up on the scoreboard in the second, third and fourth innings.

 

The right-hander earned a big-league call up to Chicago after the MLB All-Star break last year, pitching to the tune of a 3.25 ERA over 69.1 innings in 13 starts to finish his season. The Sox would not be intimidated by the track record however as six of their seven runs would be earned and charged to Wada.

 

After a scoreless first, Saturday night's walk-off hero Matt Clark would single to right field to open the second. Nevin Ashley would then strike out swinging, bringing Shane Peterson to the plate with one out. Peterson drilled a line drive off the left field wall, plating Clark with a booming RBI double. A Ben Guez flyout to left two outs in the inning before a Christian Villanueva throwing error on a softly-hit grounder by Brandon Macias allowed Peterson to score the Sox second run.

 

Colorado Springs tacked on another run in the third on the strength of a Luis Sardinas two-out double and Clark RBI single to right.

 

Leroux turned in his sharpest outing of the young season in relief of Thornburg, twirling 3.1 innings of scoreless baseball to keep Iowa of the scoreboard, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out four.

 

Peterson would continue his excellent game at the plate, leading off the fourth inning with a single. He would leadoff the very next inning with a standup triple off the top of the wall in left center. He would fall just a home run shy of hitting for the cycle in the shortened game.

 

Guez would follow the leadoff single with a beautiful bunt single down the third base line. Macias and Leroux would continue the trend, both adding singles of their own, with Leroux's plating Peterson for the Sox fourth run. The hot-hitting Matt Long flew out to deep left, scoring Guez on the sacrifice fly before Pete Orr really broke the game open in the next at-bat. Orr cranked a line drive double high off of the left field wall, allowing Macias and Leroux to scoot around the bases for the game's final runs. The four-run inning gave the Sky Sox a 7-0 lead that would not be relinquished.

 

The efficient performance by Rick Sweet's club gave the Sox their first back-to-back wins of the season, finishing the game in a tidy one hour and fifty minutes.

 

The game two rainout will be made up on Tuesday at Security Service Field as part of a newly scheduled double-header beginning at 4:30 PM MDT (5:30 Central). The two seven-inning contests are slated to feature a matchup between Sox lefty Nick Additon (1-1, 3.94) and I-Cubs right-hander Donn Roach (1-0, 2.60) in game one with Drew Gagnon (1-1, 5.65) set to lead the way in game two. Iowa's game two starter is TBD.
