For all Matos' glove issues last year, his arm just really impressed me. The situation was runners at 1st and 2nd with 1 out, he had a bounding grounder hit right at him at 3rd, he ran to the bag and made an off balance throw towards 1st in the manner of a 2nd baseman clearing 2nd towards the pitcher's mound when trying to turn 2. The throw was on a line and accurate so even though he missed getting the runner by about a step I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the throw and how close the play at 1st turned out to be.

Rattlers win second straight by shutting out Chiefs

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Cy Sneed and Victor Diaz combined on a four-hit shutout of the Peoria Chiefs on Saturday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium to lead the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to a 2-0 victory. The win gave Wisconsin their first two-game winning streak of the season.

 

Sthervin Matos put the Timber Rattlers (5-12) in front in the second inning. The Wisconsin third baseman hit a leadoff homer on an 0-2 pitch for a 1-0 lead. The home run was the second of the season for Matos, who also homered in Friday's win over the Chiefs.

 

Peoria (8-9) threatened to tie the game in the top of the third as Blake Drake singled and Darren Seferina drew a walk. Sneed regrouped and got the next three batters to maintain the 1-0 lead.

 

Sneed went five innings, allowed three hits, and struck out five to put himself in position for his first Midwest League win.

 

Brandon Diaz helped the cause with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jake Gatewood singled with one out and was at second with two away. Diaz smacked a single up the middle to drive in Gatewood for the 2-0 advantage.

 

Victor Diaz came out of the Wisconsin bullpen for the top of the sixth and retired the first seven batters he faced.

 

The Chiefs got a one out single by Seferina in the eighth inning and a balk by Diaz moved Seferina into scoring position. Diaz came back to strike out the next two batters to end the inning.

 

Collin Radack drew a two-out walk in the top of the ninth, but Diaz ended the game on a popup to third to earn the save.

 

The loss was the fifth straight for Peoria.

 

The final game of the three game series between the Rattlers and Chiefs is Sunday afternoon. Zach Hirsch (0-2, 4.00) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Matt Pearce (1-1, 0.00) is set to start for the Chiefs. Game time is 1:05pm.

 

The first 1,000 fans to attend this game will receive a poster of Kodi Medeiros, left-handed pitcher for the Rattlers and #1 pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2014 draft, courtesy of Dunkin Donuts. Area Girl Scout Troops will be on hand for a pregame parade and special recognition. Fans may play catch on-field courtesy of Rasmussen College starting at noon.

 

Timber Rattlers players will wear their special Brewers Sunday jerseys as part of Brewers Sunday presented by 107.5, The Fan. Players will be available for a postgame autograph session sponsored by Tundraland Home Improvements, too.

So who would have thought that the first "winning streak" for either the Brewers or TRats would come in late april?

 

Sthervin Matos had multiple hits again today, the only Rattler to do so, I mentioned his improved defense earlier, but that got me thinking.

 

The other player who noticeably improved defensively is David Denson, he looks smooth and natural around the bag now, he must have put in more work over the winter.

 

Both Cy Sneed and Victor Diaz had nice change-ups today, Diaz in particular looked the best he has all year.

 

Getting back to Matos, Chris told a funny story about him during the broadcast. The TV crew wanted to interview him last night after the game and while he speaks English he was so shy he booked it for the locker room after the game to avoid them. They had to coax him into the pre-game interview today but he went through with it.

Dunedin, Fla. –The Dunedin Blue Jays (8-9) rallied time and time again in a 9-8, 12-inning victory over the Brevard County Manatees (7-9) on Saturday Night at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium.

 

With the score tied at eight in the bottom of the 12th inning, Emilio Guerrero drew a two-out walk against Casey Medlen (0-1, 1.29 ERA). Guerrero advanced to second on a wild pitch. Derrick Loveless singled to plate Guerrero and win the game for Dunedin. Medlen was tagged with the loss after he allowed three runs – one earned – on three hits and three walks.

 

Brevard County nearly took the lead in the top of the 12th, but pinch-runner Jose Pena was gunned out at the plate by Loveless as part of an inning-ending, 9-2 double play.

 

The Manatees plated two in the top of the 11th and led 8-6. With runners on second and third, Christopher McFarland singled to right field to score pinch-runner Steven Halcomb, but Angel Ortega was thrown out at the plate by Loveless. Dunedin reliever Scott Silverstein then walked three consecutive batters, including Victor Roache with the bases loaded to give the Manatees the 8-6 advantage.

 

Medlen entered to try to close the door, but allowed a leadoff walk to Guerrero. After a throwing error by McFarland put runners on second and third with nobody out, Jorge Saez plated both runners with a double to tie the game. Medlen did escape the jam to send the game to the 12th.

 

Brevard held a 6-5 lead into the eighth inning. With Kaleb Earls on the bump, Matt Dean drilled a solo home run to left, his second homer of the game, to tie the score at six.

 

The Manatees had taken the 6-5 lead in the fifth on a two-run home run by Roache. It was Roache’s fourth homer of the year. The teams traded runs in the fourth. Brevard’s Paul Eshleman led off the frame with his second long ball of the year. Dunedin’s Ian Parmley responded with an RBI single in the bottom half of the frame.

 

Five total runs were scored in the third. The Manatees plated two on an RBI fielder’s choice by Rafael Neda and a rundown situation in which Neda stayed in a pickle between first and second long enough for Roache to score from third. Neda was tagged with a caught stealing on the play. In the bottom half, Dawel Lugo smacked an RBI double and Dean hit a two-run blast. The Blue Jays led 4-3 after three.

 

Both offenses jumped out to hot starts, each scoring a single run in the first inning. Garrett Cooper delivered with a clutch two-out single to plate Taylor Brennan. Mitch Nay scored Parmley with an RBI grounder to second.

 

All-in-all 17 runs were scored on 26 hits and four errors. Brennan went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two walks. Eshleman had three hits, including the homer. Of the 12 Manatees hits, 10 were singles.

 

Wil Browning (2-0, 1.13 ERA) was credited with the win after he got two outs in the 12th.

 

Brevard County starter Clint Terry went four innings and allowed five runs – four earned – on seven hits. Tyler Spurlin was the first man out of the pen and tossed two scoreless innings. Earls allowed just the Dean homer in his two innings. Preston Gainey pitched two scoreless innings in the ninth and 10th.

 

The Manatees will start a three-game series with the Lakeland Flying Tigers tomorrow at Joker Marchant Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM (12:00 Central). Wei-Chung Wang (1-1, 8.03 ERA) will get the start for the Manatees. Jonathan Maciel will toe the rubber for Lakeland.

Both teams knew they would need to use their bullpens, so it was always going to be a battle of the 'pens. Clint Terry had not thrown more than 3 innings and went 4 in this game.

 

Chris McFarland has struck out 6 times in the last 2 games and had 2 errors in this game, including in the 11th which proved very costly. He did have the go ahead single in the top of the 11th.

 

Taylor Brennan 3-4 with two walks but hasn't hit for much power so far this year.

 

As mentioned in Victor Roache's tweet, Manatees now head for Lakeland. I think Dave Walkovic said there would be no audio from either team for that series.

Most of the sellout crowd had stayed, anyway, because of Saturday's post-game fireworks show.

 

With the team's final at-bat, Blue Wahoos outfielder Jesse Winker nearly applied a special charge.

 

That is, until Biloxi Shuckers center fielder Kyle Wren's brilliance took it away.

 

What appeared to leave Winker's bat as a possible walk-off home run, or at worst a run-tying hit, was caught a few inches short of the wall in deep center. A few feet short of a dramatic win. Instead it became a long, final out in the Wahoos 4-3 loss at Blue Wahoos stadium.

 

"I thought he got it," Blue Wahoos manager Pat Kelly said. "Just seeing him the past couple years hit balls ... I thought it had a pretty good chance. It was close. But unfortunately, the wind was blowing quite hard enough.

 

"When it was first hit, I thought it was over Wren's head. He can really fly, because he ran the ball down and caught almost with ease."

 

Winker had hit two homers in a four-game streak in the Blue Wahoos last series at Birmingham. After just missing a fifth, he stood between first and second base with his hands on the back of his head, staring in disbelief that the ball was caught.

 

"I definitely thought it was gone for sure," said Winker, ranked as the Cincinnati Reds No. 3 prospect. . "I thought I got it. PK (Pat Kelly) wants to win and so do we."

 

Wren hit the wall and held on to the ball, the win and continued Biloxi's fast start (10-5) as the relocated affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.

 

All of the Shuckers games will be road games until at least the first week in June until MGM Park opens across the street from the Beau Rivage Casino in Biloxi.

 

The Shuckers, formerly the Huntsville Stars, opened the season winning three of four games against the Blue Wahoos at the bayfront ballpark. The two teams will play a doubleheader today beginning at 2:00 PM as part of a six-game series.

 

So far this season, Wren and the top of their entire batting order is filled with young stars.

 

But the Blue Wahoos (4-10) squandered many chances last night. They were handed eight walks and had three others reach after being hit by a pitch. But even with all those baserunners, they trailed into the late innings.

 

Until Sean Buckley led off the ninth with a single, they had only two hits against four Biloxi pitchers.

 

"When you only get two hits and one of 'em is a bunt, that is kind of tough," Kelly said. "I thought we did a good job taking the walks, but we couldn't get that big hit..

 

"I see improvement, I see us getting better, but a game like this is a game have to win. A one run game, your bullpen does a great job keeping you in the ball game. You have to find a way to scratch out a couple runs."

 

The Blue Wahoos got three runs in the second inning with just one hit. They had Biloxi starter Brent Suter, a Harvard University grad, in trouble after he loaded the bases with two walks and Kyle Waldrop's single.

 

He hit catcher Chris Berset to force in one run. Blue Wahoos pitcher Robert Stephenson drove in another on a sacrifice fly. Two more walks forced in another run.

 

But from that point, Suter settled into a groove. And the Shuckers' bullpen didn't allow another run.
